BIOGRAPHIESThe late Jazz-Swing singer and musician extraordinaire

Nat King Cole remains Unforgettable to scores of fans

worldwide. The Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall

of Fame inductee made television history in 1956 when

he became the first African American to host a variety

television series.

In STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT, music

legends RAMSEY LEWIS and JOHN PIZZARELLI pay

TRIBUTE TO NAT KING COLE, presenting the late

legend’s ageless hits, which include Straighten Up and Fly

Right, Route 66, I Love You for Sentimental Reasons, and It’s

Only a Paper Moon.

With three Grammys and more than 80 albums

throughout his career, Lewis is known for infusing Gospel

and Classical sounds into his Jazz-Blues-R&B repertoire.

The Chicago Tribune called him “electric,” saying he “clearly

is capable of writing fresh, aria-like melodies steeped in

blue.” Recently honored with a Fifth Star cultural award

from the city of Chicago for his contribution to music and

the arts, Lewis topped the charts with the Gold album Wade

in the Water and the Grammy-winning Hang on Sloopy,

Hold It Right There, and The In Crowd. He recently released

Ramsey, Taking Another Look. Lewis co-hosts the popular

radio program Legends of Jazz.

Pizzarelli has cultivated an award-winning

international career as a contemporary interpreter of classic

American standards and ballads. Called “madly creative” by

the Los Angeles Times, the host of the nationally syndicated

program Radio Deluxe With John Pizzarelli has won the

2007 Nightlife Award, which honors the best in New

York Cabaret, Comedy, and Jazz. Pizzarelli has partnered

with music’s top names, including James Taylor, Natalie

Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Jon Secada, and Roberta Flack.

BIOGRAPHIESIn a three-part format, Rob Kapilow explores

PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION – MUSSORGSKY

with pianist ALBERT CANO SMIT. A lively Q&A con-

cludes the evening. It’s “the kind of enlightening musical

seminar in which you hang on to every word and note,” says

The New York Times of the What Makes It Great? program.

Composer Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was an in-

novator of Russian music during the Romantic period. His

piano piece, Pictures at an Exhibition, describes paintings in

sound and is universally accepted as his most popular com-

position. It was believed that Mussorgsky was moved to write

the work in honor of an architect-artist friend whose prema-

ture death prevented him from leaving behind a legacy.

Long compared to legendary composer-conductor

Leonard Bernstein and exalted as “Classical music’s greatest

evangelist” by the Boston Herald, ROB KAPILOW “gets

audiences in tune with Classical music at a deeper and more

immediate level than many of them thought possible,” hails

the Los Angeles Times.

For more than two decades, Kapilow has brought the

joys and wonder of music to audiences of all ages and back-

grounds with his What Makes It Great? presentations, which

dissect and examine the mysteries of music in terms every-

one can grasp and appreciate. Part One is an entertaining

discussion displaying Kapilow’s astounding gift for observa-

tion and his animated teaching style. Part Two features

performances of the composition. The evening concludes

with Part Three, a spirited Q&A on the work.

Cited by The Boston Globe as “an educator, motiva-

tional speaker, and game show host, all rolled up in one,”

Kapilow has built a loyal following and a name for himself

worldwide. His renowned What Makes It Great? series is a

recurring event in New York, Boston, Toronto, Washington

D.C., and Cerritos. Kapilow’s vast catalog of accomplish-

ments includes the highly praised FamilyMusik series, which

introduces youths to all things musical; and Citypieces,

which celebrates American life – its history, citizens, diver-

sity, and destination – through collaborative compositions.

Kapilow claimed the top spot in the Fontainebleau

Casadesus Piano Competition, and Second Prize in the

Antal Dorati Conductor’s Competition with the Detroit

Symphony. A featured composer on Chicago Public Radio’s

prestigious Composers in America series, Kapilow is also a

recipient of an Exxon “Meet-the-Composer” grant and

numerous awards from the American Society of Composers,

Authors and Publishers, which includes more than 300,000

U.S. musicians, songwriters, lyricists, and publishers of all

musical genres. Kapilow has spearheaded multiple musical

productions, from the Tony award-winning Nine on Broad-

way to the premiere of Frida for the opening of the Brooklyn

Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. He is the author

of the award-winning book All You Have to Do Is Listen

and its follow-up, What Makes It Great? Short Masterpieces,

Great Composers. His latest album is Polar Express/Gertrude

McFuzz, featuring collaborations with Isabel Leonard and

Nathan Gunn.

ALBERT CANO SMIT has won prizes at numerous

piano competitions, including the XIX Chopin Festival in

Poland and the Beethoven Society of Europe competition.

He has performed in Europe and the United States,

including at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, England;

Auditori Enric Granados in Spain; and the Westminster

Cathedral in London. He has worked with the Manchester

Camerata Orchestra, the American Youth Symphony, and

the Nottingham Youth Orchestra. n

BIOGRAPHIESNearly eight decades after it was founded, the

COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA continues to thrill

crowds with its trademark Swingin’ ways, continuing strong

an American institution personifying the grandeur and

excellence of Jazz.

Founded in 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri, the Count

Basie Orchestra was dominating airwaves across America

within a year, delighting fans with its legendary foot-

stomping Blues tunes. The ensemble “was the epitome of

swing, of jazz that moved with a built-in flowing intensity,”

raved The New York Times.

Scoring more than a dozen Grammys, the orchestra

performed for royalty globally, appeared in movies and

television shows, and played at major Jazz festivals and

concert halls worldwide. The band’s Grammy-winning

albums include 88 Basie Street, Warm Breeze, Count Plays

Duke, On the Road, Prime Time, and Live at Manchester

Craftsmen’s Guild. Talents such as Lester Young, Billie

Holiday, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, and Snooky Young

earned international recognition after stints with the group.

Discovered by Count Basie, Jazz powerhouse

CARMEN BRADFORD has been cited by the Los Angeles

Times for her “control of mood and dynamics.” Her albums

include Finally Yours, With Respect, and Home With You.

She has collaborated with many of music’s biggest

names and institutions, including Wynton Marsalis, John

Clayton, Doc Severinsen, Tony Bennett, James Brown,

Patti Austin, Frank Sinatra, and the Lincoln Center Jazz

Orchestra. Bradford teamed up with guitarist George

Benson on the Grammy-winning Big Boss Band album.

Comedian ROBERT LEE hosts the show. n

BIOGRAPHYThe Bee Gees defined the Disco era with legendary

falsetto harmonies and funky beats, selling more than 200

million records worldwide. The indisputable face of Disco,

the Bee Gees rocked the world and shattered music charts,

earning the distinction of being the only group in history

to have written, recorded, and produced six consecutive

No. One hits.

The group’s Grammy-winning Saturday Night Fever

album alone sold more than 30 million copies. It reigned

as the top-selling album in history until Michael Jackson’s

1982 Thriller, which Jackson himself acknowledged was

inspired by Saturday Night Fever. At the time of the Bee

Gees’ induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in

1997, the band was outsold by only Elvis, the Beatles, Garth

Brooks, Michael Jackson, and Paul McCartney.

The tribute show STAYIN’ ALIVE – ONE NIGHT OF THE BEE GEES celebrates the group’s legacy. Expect

a Night Fever of hits, including blockbuster tunes (such as

Jive Talkin’, How Deep Is Your Love, You Should Be Dancing,

Nights on Broadway, and Lonely Days) as well as popular

soft ballads (I Started a Joke, Words, Massachusetts, and To

Love Somebody). The high-energy production features big-

screen video clips, photos, and dazzling imagery, making the

experience more realistic for audiences.

The Stayin’ Alive tribute band includes Tony Mattina

(as lead vocalist Barry Gibb), George Manz (as the late

Maurice Gibb), Todd Sharman (as the late Robin Gibb),

drummer-percussionist Michael Griffin, bass guitarist

Chris Mullen, and guitarists Smokin’ Joe Perees and Andy

Wegerich. n

BIOGRAPHYThe Grimm Brothers’ ageless fable RUMPLESTILTSKIN

spins to life on stage, exploring themes of greed, deception, vanity,

manipulation, and friendship.

Once upon a time, a poor miller boasted to the king

about his daughter Daisy’s amazing ability to spin ordinary

straw into mountains of gold. Intrigued, the greedy king

locked the miller’s daughter in the castle for three nights,

threatening death if she doesn’t turn straw into gold by the

morning.

During each night, a mischievous little man came to

Daisy’s aid, spinning the straw into gold in exchange for

her valuables. When she had nothing more of value to offer

him on the third night, he made her vow to give him her

firstborn, which she agreed to.

After three mornings of being greeted by a room filled

with gold, the greedy king married Daisy. Shortly after Daisy

gave birth to her first child, Rumplestiltskin returned to

collect on the promise. He refused all the riches she offered,

but agreed to give her three days to guess his name. If she

guessed correctly, she could keep her baby.

The children’s fairy tale, dating back to the 1800s,

juggles ageless life lessons about trickery, secrets, and the

struggle for power. Presented by The Panto Company,

which has been delivering quality children’s theater

throughout the United Kingdom since 1999, the production

features catchy songs, colorful costumes, and audience

participation. All Panto Company shows are conceived and

produced by founder Matt Lee-Alliston, an award-winning

actor. Recommended for ages 5 and older, Rumplestiltskin

lasts approximately one hour. n

BIOGRAPHYONE NIGHT OF QUEEN pays tribute to one of

music’s greatest groups by re-creating the look, sound, pomp,

and showmanship of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band.

In the 1970s, the Rock band Queen dominated the

music scene with the chart-topping hits Bohemian Rhapsody,

We Will Rock You, Radio Ga Ga, and We Are the Champions.

Performed by Gary Mullen & The Works, the tribute

concert One Night of Queen celebrates the timeless music

and legacy of the group that was named to VH1’s “100

Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.” Queen fans will be treated,

note-for-note, to the group’s mega-hits, including Killer

Queen, You’re My Best Friend, Crazy Little Thing Called Love,

and Another One Bites the Dust.

For more than 10 years, Gary Mullen & The Works

has performed the tribute show to sold-out audiences in the

United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, South Africa,

and New Zealand. The group includes lead vocalist Mullen

portraying the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, whose

bravura and powerful vocals made the group one of the most

popular in the 1970s; bass guitarist Billy Moffat; keyboardist

Malcolm Gentles; drummer Jonathan Evans; and guitarist

David Brockett. n

TICKET BROKERSTickets to all performances at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) are available exclusively through the theater’s Ticket Office and official website www.cerritoscenter.com. The CCPA does not work in conjunction with any other ticketing organizations or websites. Purchasing from a ticket broker, scalper, or unauthorized website is never a good idea because:

• You will always pay more than face value for each ticket. In many cases, the tickets you purchase from a broker are not as good as what is available directly through the CCPA Ticket Office.

• We cannot guarantee the authenticity of the tickets.• If there is an issue with your tickets or they are found

to be inauthentic, we cannot help you because you did not purchase the tickets from the theater. You will be asked to purchase new tickets for the performance or leave the premises. The face value on the tickets you are holding cannot be applied towards the purchase of new tickets.

• Ticket brokers often purchase wheelchair locations and sell them as regular seats. Not only does this practice prevent you from attending the performance, it also prevents us from selling these seats to patrons who need wheelchair accessibility.

• We cannot replace lost or stolen tickets.• We cannot contact you with any information

regarding show cancellations, performer lineup changes, or rescheduled events. All correspondence will be made to the original ticket purchaser, who may not notify you of changes made to the performance.

• Instead of supporting the performers and organizations that work hard to put on the events that you enjoy, you are rewarding people and businesses that only make it difficult for real fans like yourself from seeing your favorite performers without being charged a premium.

Following are some tips to ensure that you are purchasing from the CCPA:

• Visit or call the Ticket Office directly at (800) 300-4345 during regular business hours. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be happy to help with ticketing questions or needs.

• Do not use a search engine (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) to find our website. Many search engines make money by listing various website addresses before ours. These other websites are unauthorized to sell tickets to our events. Instead, type www.cerritoscenter.com into the website address field.

• Make sure that you are purchasing from the official CCPA website. Look at the website address and make sure that www.cerritoscenter.com is at the beginning of the website address listed. If it is, you may safely continue with your transaction. If it is not, close the page and start over as you are on an unauthorized site.

Online Ticket Brokers and Ticket Resale Services:The CCPA reserves the right to revoke all advance purchase, refund, and exchange privileges extended to a ticket’s original purchaser if tickets are found to be placed with online ticket brokers or other ticket-sales services at prices in excess of the ticket’s face value.
