Piracy is a growing threat affecting the free and safe shipping activity, spreading in particular geographical areas such as Aden Gulf, Malacca Strait, Niger Delta, Caribbean Sea.The ship should appear as a difficult target managed by personnel properly aware of the threat and trained for. Measures proven to be effective in this respect are: Optimization of routing and timing – use of convoy, transit in day

light Enhanced surveillance and patrol for timely alert Outfitting tailored on the ship lay out such as barber wire, restricted

access, water driven jet machine Anti-piracy ‘Citadel’ safe room.

A supporting frame for new ideas Novel technologies are not adequately covered by established

codes, procedures and practices Technology Qualification certifies that a novel technology meets the

specified requirements for its intended service in terms of safety, fitness for service, availability, functionality, compliance with client-defined targets.

In the current credit crunch a novel technology is seen by investors as a high risk. Technology Qualification is an independent third party certification to reduce this risk.

Ship innovation: Technology Qualification

certification

Page 78: 2014_RSSE_nn_low res

A new technology, i.e. a proven technology in a new environment or an unproven technology in a known environment, is generally not adequately covered by established codes and procedures.AIP scope is to verify: The concept underlying this novel technology is feasible and

realistic The intent of the rules and regulations that will be applied during

the realization phase is met.

Ship innovation: Approval In Principle (AIP) of

innovative projects

Page 79: 2014_RSSE_nn_low res

The right tools and the extensive experience built up in the field can help attain an onboard environment where not only are noise and vibration levels not harmful to health but they are so good that we cannot tell the difference between being onboard and on land.MAIN BENEFITS extend awareness of the phenomenon have data to baseline the problem and decide on the most

appropriate method of analysis understand the limits of the calculation models and corresponding

uncertainties quantify the level of confidence in the results propose effective solutions without deluding customer

expectations.
