Board of Directors

Welcome to the 14th annual Energizing Summit. It is hard to imagine how many years we have been producing this event. From the very first Energizing Summit our sole purpose was to educate our audience on the finer points of haircoloring. Smearing haircolor on the head is a no brainer, what distinguishes our audience from the other 1.9 million hairdressers is the fact that we know there is much more to coloring hair.

This years Summit brings together outstanding haircolorists who are devoted to making you a better colorist. My entry into producing the Summit came about from the experience of interacting with a small group of individuals who were not only haircolorists, but haircolorists who wanted to contribute to make a better and more favorable industry. Not for the manufacturers or the distributors but rather for those individuals who are in the trenches everyday making the world a more beautiful place.

Look over our selection of classes and choose based on areas you feel you need the help most. We recommend if you attend as a group try to take different classes so you can exchange notes you received afterwards. We also encourage you to connect with the other hairdressers. Sometimes as haircolorists we can become isolated from the outside world, working in the same salon without interaction from other colorists. Above all enjoy yourself and be proud of what you do!

How important are we?The answer to that question is very significant. Talk to anyone whose hair is beginning to turn gray and they will tell you that their gray haircolor makes them feel old. We are in a position to make people feel better about themselves, what can be more important than that? We as an industry are at a crossroads. Too many individuals who would like to have their hair colored can no longer afford it. They are turning to their friends and neighbors to have their hair colored. Retail haircolor is growing by leaps and bounds while professional haircolor is shrinking. We have to get the clients we lost back into the salon. Learn how.

Andre NizetichKeynote Speaker

Talent is overrated, just be nice to clients. Roy’s opening remarks are something everyone can relate to. Developing a clientele is based more on how you treat a client rather than your creativity. This is especially true in haircoloring where clients are looking for consistency and reliability. Keeping the clients’ color consistent is not always easy. Let Roy inform you on how this is done. Take it from this world master. He knows what is required to be successful in this competitive arena. Make the most from your trip to the Summit. Roy has made a career of making haircolorists wiser. Don’t miss this morning session!

Long Hair Highlights with Ombre

Intro to Balayage & Ombre

Andre NizetichABCH

Monica ByrneABCH

The first time a celebrity became fascinated with her new Balayage and Ombre haircolor it became the new craze. Balayage means to sweep in french. The color technique is achieved by sweeping bleach onto the

hair. When you witness it being executed it looks simple. Make no mistake, it requires skill and tal-ent to make it look sensational. The Ombre is very much the same technique. You will do Balayage on one side of the mannequin and Ombre on the other. Both techniques in one exciting 3 hour class. Led by Monica Byrne and her team of haircolorists, you will love this class. This class has a $15.00 surcharge for the maintenance of the mannequin. You will be using mock bleach and the man-nequin will remain in the classroom at the end of the class.

Long hair is a fact of life, we are seeing more and more of it. If your client loves their ombre show them how you can make it more appeal-ing with highlights. In this class Andre will demonstrate how you can keep your long hair clients coming back into the salon for regular high-lights. Adding highlights will give the ombre a much softer look. This class is a lecture demonstration where you can observe this technique as well as viewing finished mannequins. This class will only be taught for one session.

Sunday: 2:00 pmLecture Demonstration

This Hands-On class will take you through the step by step process of putting highlights in long hair. After the highlights you will add the ombre to the highlighted hair. This is a high ticket service that will set you apart from the crowd of haircolorists. You will start working from the beginning of the class and continue until the mannequin is finished. Don’t miss this class! This class has a $15.00 surcharge for the main-tenance of the mannequin. You will be using mock bleach and the mannequin will remain in the classroom at the end of the class

Knowing and Understanding BleachesThis class is all about bleach-es. Working with a variety of bleaches, each participant will put their bleach through its pac-es. Then the participants will compare results: which is faster, which is slower, which produces the most dust when mixing. It is also interesting to note the pH of each bleach and how much it changes the longer the bleach has been mixed. The price of each bleach is explored to see if the more ex-pensive bleaches are worth the additional money. You will come away from this class with a world of knowledge about bleaches.

High-Lift vs. Lighteners

Stephen Adams

How do you know which product to use based on texture and color? Take the time to discover the differences in high-lift colors and lighten-ers with Stephen Adams, a gifted hairdresser and educator. Which one will produce the best results for your clients? Explore your options and obtain an in depth understanding of the benefits of both. In this class you will go over the chemistry of hair and how lightening effects it. Comparing and breaking down the properties will set you up for suc-cess when working with clients going lighter.

Sunday: 11:00 amMonday: 9:30 am 2:00 pmLecture

Set yourself apart from the crowd by specializing in a service most shy away from. In this hands-on workshop you will learn a fast, easy way to handle long hair. You will be working on mannequins that are 18 inches long with ease. Andrea is a master at highlighting long hair. Let’s face it, highlighting long hair is not the same as highlighting short hair. With long hair you see the client’s less often and the highlights have to last much longer. Learn how to retouch to prevent blonde buildup and preserve the condition of the hair. This class has a $15.00 surcharge for the mainte-nance of the mannequin. You will be using mock bleach and the man-nequin will remain in the classroom at the end of the class.

Mastering undertones is having the ability to predict what the out-come of the color will be, based on the natural haircolor. This class will teach you how you can confidently predict the outcome of a haircolor. The haircolor in the tube or bottle is a constant. The only thing that changes are undertones, and they are based on your client’s parentage and the colors the hair has gone through while growing up. You will learn to use the client consultation swatch chart and you will come away from this class with the ability to better anticipate the final color result. This is a class for the newer haircolorist and anyone seek-ing to become an American Board Certified Haircolorist.

Are your colors not reacting as they should? Do you get brassy and red tones when you use an ash color? This class is for you. Kathy Partin, ABCH has developed a method of adding more color to your formulas so you get less fading and more durable haircolors. She calls the system she developed “Color Concentration.” It is substituting more haircolor in your formula in place of the water. You don’t put water in your formula, you say? Yes you do! Did you realize more than half of your formula is water? Water that dilutes your color and makes it wash out of the hair faster leav-ing the hair dry and brassy. Using a digital film to bring you into the salon you’ll learn the why and how of peroxide, unwanted red tones, banding, fade, DAMAGE and gray coverage. This class is so enriching and so fast moving you will be crying for more. Don’t miss Kathy Partin, ABCH.Kathy Partin

Color Redirection This class is a in depth approach to reinterpreting haircolor correction. Producing the best results without impacting the hair. It is important you manipulate and shift the hair rather than hav-ing to completely deconstruct it. This approach to doing corrective color prevents further damage. Call it thinking correction. Every cor-rection is different, the porosity, the length, and the natural haircolor gives rise an individual approach. It is the selection of the correct series of colors and techniques that will give you the results you can be proud of. This class is fascinating, don’t miss it.

Splitting Hairs, the Real Truth

Chase Wakeling

Sunday: 9:30 am 2:00 pmMonday: 9:30 am 2:00 pmLecture

Hands-On High-Low Lighting

Chase will be addressing some of the most common myths in our industry! Some of the topics Chase will be discussing are:

• Is brown haircolor produced by mixing 2 parts Red, 3 parts Yellow and 1 part Blue?

• You must use 20 volume developer for coverage on gray hair.• The use of Demi-Permanent color to refresh ends is recommended.• Demi-Permanent color is produced so it will fade.• Ammonia-free haircolor is more gentle on the hair.• Processing color with heat is better.• Do not color a pregnant client.• Over the counter haircolor is not as effective as professional haircolor.• Chemical burns on the scalp are a reality, can you prevent them? What

causes them and how.

Chase will address these issues and more using science and showing the difference between how things are done in the lab and in the salon helping you become a better colorist. He will also be addressing the issue of why you may hear different things from other classes you attend and why both answers could be correct! Don’t miss his class!

High-Low lighting is a service every haircolorist needs to know. Whether you are giving a client some dimension on her over blonded hair or if you are doing a major color change, High-Low lighting could be the answer. This is a very versatile technique so this class requires you have basic foiling skills. You will be learning how to formulate for hair that is extremely porous, the ratio of highlights to low lights and what you need to be cautious of when performing this service. The High-Low lighting requirements for the ABCH exam will also be covered. This is a very exciting class by two outstanding haircolorists. If you have not perfected your High-Low lighting skills this class is for you. This class has a $15.00 surcharge for the maintenance of the mannequin. You will be using mock bleach and the man-nequin will remain in the classroom at the end of the class.
