EDGEWOODMARCH 2006
Laura Horner was presented with theprestigious William D. Limpert Award forCommunity Service at the annual townmeeting held in February and sponsoredby the Edgewood Foundation.
Laura was chosen for this award, established to recognize a resident ofour borough who has made a signifi-cant contribution to the quality of life inour community, because of her willingness to give of her time and talents tokey community groups and the activi-ties and programs supported by them.
Laura joined the board of theEdgewood Club six years ago. Hertenure coincided with the club’s cen-tennial celebration. She made sure thecentennial events and promotion ofthe club observance emphasized theuniqueness of Edgewood.
She also served on the board of theEdgewood Foundation, where sheworked to maximize cross promotion ofthe Foundation activities through Clubactivities. It seemed only logical to her thata strong Foundation and a strong Clubmake an even stronger community.
When the Recreation Board was inneed of new members and energy sheeven recruited her husband Kevin.Later, she recruited a leader with expe-rience in costuming and event creation, which resulted in a truly professional“Haunted House” for all to enjoy.
Laura and Kevin have lived in
Edgewood for over 16 years. Theyhave three children: Meghan, 18, afreshman at Tufts University; Daniel,16; and Brian, 13, a.k.a. “Bubby.”
Laura worked for many years inmarketing/PR firms in New York Cityand then Pittsburgh, before becominga full-time mom. When Kevin’s jobtook the family to Geneva, she pickedright up on neighborhood relations,
organizing perhaps the first ever couples bowling league in Switzerland.
In presenting the award, Foundationpresident Vaughn Busch said, “We areall fortunate to have Laura for a neigh-bor and even more fortunate that she isa person who really gives back to all ofher community making Edgewoodtruly a special place to live.”
AN EXCLUSIVE CLUB; Laura Horner joins the distinguished list of Limpert award winners. Here, she receives her plaque from Foundation president Vaughn Busch.

RecyclingI have expressed my enthusiasm
with Edgewood’s recycling programover the last year and would like topresent collection information that Ihave recently completed. The bor-ough has a curb-side pickup program, collected every other Thursday, inwhich we collect plastic, aluminum, glass, and steel cans. We also have apaper drop-off site behind the bor-ough building, where we collect news-paper, junk mail, magazines, card-board, and phone books.
Beyond the environmental benefitthat everyone normally thinks of withrecycling, there is an economic benefitto the borough. Every year Edgewoodreceives fund from a recycling per-formance grant which provides rev-enue to communities based on thetotal recyclable tonnage collected. Theborough collected almost 88 tons ofmaterial from our curb-side program. We began our paper drop off programin mid-April last year and ended theyear by collecting almost 56 tons ofpaper recycling materials. That comesout to about seven tons per month andI am hoping we can continue toimprove that amount.
The Western Pennsylvania School forthe Deaf recently added paper recyclingbins for their school and collected twotons of paper in the last seven weeks of2005. I have received the reports fromthe four bigger businesses in EdgewoodTowne Center; Eat N’ Park, A.J. Wright,Busy Beaver, and Kmart. These fourbusinesses recycled 480 tons of materi-al. If we total all of those totals we havean impressive amount of 624 tons ofrecyclable material for our little town. Iencourage you all to continue to takethe time to separate these items for the
environmental reasons as well as theeconomic ones.

Automated External DefibrillatorAt the February 6 Council Meeting,
on behalf of the EVFD, Captain SteveHalle presented Borough Council witha new AED (Automated ExternalDefibrillator). AED machines, housedin plastic cases the size of a largepurse, can be used to monitor a per-son’s heartbeat and determine if theheart’s rhythm is normal. Defibrillatorscan also deliver life-saving electricshocks to restart the heart or correct anirregular heartbeat. AEDs are designedto be used by non-medical personnel,so cardiac arrest victims don’t have towait for emergency crews to arrive toreceive potentially life-saving treat-ment. The AED was acquired througha grant from the PULSE program. TheAED is housed in a cabinet outside thecommunications room in the front hall-

Heavy Duty TruckAt the same meeting council approved
the bidding for a heavy-duty rescue truckfor the EVFD. The rescue will replace theladder truck, which is now enjoyingretirement life in Richmond, Virginia. Aheavy-duty rescue is basically a toolboxon wheels. With 60% of our call volumedealing in vehicle rescue or a situationthat is non-fire related, this truck is theanswer for the borough. The truck willbe equipped with light towers, Jaws ofLife, a 250-gallon water tank, and a com-mand center in the cab. No matter whatthe incident is, be it fire or public safety, this truck will serve above and beyond.

Our Fire Company—Up Close and PersonalEdgewood Borough currently has
four officers within the department -Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, andEngineer. The Chief has overall controlof the fire or accident call. In hisabsence the Assistant Chief or anotherofficer is in charge. The Chief of theEdgewood Volunteer Fire Departmentis Dave “Bubbles” Andrews.
Dave is a third generation firefighterand has been fighting fires for 26 years.Dave works as a Code EnforcementOfficer in North Braddock and Rankin.Dave’s commitment to and view of fire-fighting is best described in a quotefrom Ed Crocker, Chief of the NewYork City Fire Department: “I have noambition in this world but one, and thatis to be a firefighter.”
Assistant Chief Kevin Laird has beena firefighter for approximately 14 years. The Assistant Chief in a smaller depart-ment is equivalent to a Battalion Chiefin larger departments. The AssistantChief may have command over certainfunctions such as training or communi-cations. When Kevin first joined theFire Department, the main concern wassimply putting out the fire, now a fire-fighter needs to be concerned about amultitude of things from getting to thefire safely to controlling contaminantson almost every call.
Fire Captain Steve Halle has been avolunteer firefighter for 28 years, join-ing the Bower Hill Volunteer FireDepartment at age 14. He loves thechallenge of training new firefightersand helping the community, but healso understands the importance ofhaving the Class Three Firefightersraising funds to keep the departmentwell equipped. In his daytime job,Steve is a certified and licensedOccupational Therapist Assistant atWest Penn Allegheny Health System.Steve is also an Emergency Medical
Technician within the Fire Department. The Captain in a large Fire
Department is the ranking officer atone station and is the initial commandat emergencies, or they may commanda special function or section. InEdgewood, the Captain is the SafetyOfficer at a fire. The Safety Officerensures that all firefighters are account-ed for and in constant contact with thepump operator/engineer or with theon-scene Safety Officer if there are suf-ficient firefighters available. TheDepartment’s Dispatcher/Engineer isan Edgewood Borough employee. TheEngineer is usually the firefighter whodrives the truck and operates the pumpor aerial and is the specialist whoknows everything about that truck.
Other firefighters in Edgewood arecollege students, a beer truck driver, aparamedic, a surgical physician assis-tant, and a health care planner. BenReynolds, a probationary firefighter, isa Surgical Physician Assistant at UPMC.Ben joined the Fire Department out ofa sense of wanting to help his commu-nity. As he notes, “For those of us wholive in a small community likeEdgewood an effective volunteer firedepartment can’t happen without theparticipation of the people for whomthey serve”. Ben is a second generationfirefighter, his father was a volunteerfor 50 years. With the exception of theprobationary firefighters, all Class Onefirefighters in Edgewood have hun-dreds of hours of training and are cer-tified in many areas including workingwith hazardous materials, vehicle res-cue, national incident command struc-ture, and emergency medical training.
(Editor’s note: this is the third in a seriesof articles on the Edgewood Volunteer FireCompany by Steve Krumholz. Watch forinformation on their equipment in anupcoming newsletter.)
