Aurea Quartet string quartet

Thursday 15th October 2015

Haydn Quartet in A major Op. 55 No 1 Brahms Quartet in A minor Op. 51 No 2 Webern Langsamer Satz Schumann Quartet in A major Op. 41 No 3

The opening concert of our seventy-first season features the prize winning Aurea Quartet. The Glasgow based ensemble are currently St John’s Smith Square Young Artists and also resident quartet for the 2015 Wye Valley Chamber Festival. Their programme begins with a typical later Haydn string quartet followed by a Brahms quartet with a contrasting rich and complex sound. The beautiful ‘Langsamer Satz’ (slow movement) is one of a number of such works composed in 1905 for string quartet by Webern while he was a pupil of Schoenberg. The concert concludes with the third of Schumann’s three string quartets, which is held to be the pick of the trio, all written in 1842.

Villiers Quartet string quartet

Thursday 12th November 2015

Haydn Quartet in F minor Op. 55 No 2 ‘The Razor’ Mozart Quartet in G major No 14 K 387 Borodin Quartet in D major No 2 The youthful Villiers Quartet, named after Villiers Street in Covent Garden, are the winners of the 2015 Radcliffe Chamber Music Competition and currently the Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Oxford. They have inaugurated their own VQ New Works Competition in which composers are invited to submit original pieces for string quartet. The finalists’ works are performed at a live concert in London with the winner selected by online and live audiences. We will hear a late Haydn quartet and then the almost contemporaneous Mozart K387 known as the ‘Spring’ quartet. The ensemble confirms their reputations for exploring the repertoire by choosing Borodin’s second string quartet as the finale. The melody of the third movement may be familiar from the song ‘And This Is My Beloved’ from the musical ‘Kismet’.

O Duo percussion

Thursday 10th December 2015

O Duo Bongo Fury Granados Two Spanish Dances Bach French Suite No. 5 excerpts Chopin Two Études Gillespie Night in Tunisia

‘O Duo’ will be a first for the society in bringing percussion to centre stage. Oliver Cox and Owen Gunnell formed ‘O Duo’ while both were studying at the Royal College of Music in 2000. The programme will feature a mixture of tuned (e.g. marimba) and untuned percussion performing a typical repertoire of classics and contemporary works including their own compositions. The duo also introduces their performances with characteristic style. And of course this concert will have our usual seasonal refreshments during the interval.

James Gilchrist tenorAnna Tilbrook piano

Thursday 14th January 2016

Butterworth ‘A Shropshire Lad’ Schubert ‘Die Schöne Müllerin’

Tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook will perform a recital of two contrasting song cycles. Butterworth’s ‘A Shropshire Lad’ - a setting of the A. E. Houseman poems, was written shortly before World War One in which the composer died. The Schubert is a setting of poems by Wilhelm Müller and is considered to be one of Schubert’s greatest works for voice. We are fortunate to have this opportunity of experiencing singing of such high calibre. Due to the challenging programme, the duration of this recital will be shorter than usual.
