One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the irresistible family musical about the trials and triumphs of Joseph, Israel’s favorite son. The first collaboration of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar and The Lion King), Joseph blends pop, country and rock into an uplifting, technicolored story of biblical proportions. Retelling the Bible story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colors, this magical musical is full of unforgettable songs including Those Canaan Days, Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door.

Black Violin

Named one of the hottest bands at South by Southwest in 2013, Black Violin plays a blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B and bluegrass music. The classically trained twosome, Wilner “Wil B” Baptiste and Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester are a welcome revelation for their ability to meld highbrow and pop culture into a single genre-busting act. Live, they are accompanied by their band, featuring ace turntable whiz DJTK (Dwayne Dayal). Individually and together, this talented duo has collaborated with the likes of P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin and The Eagles.

In 2000, KANSAS returned to the studio to produce Somewhere to Elsewhere, the first album to feature all six original players in 20 years. Since then, they have released albums and DVDs while remaining a fixture of classic rock radio. The group continues to tour and has reached an entirely new audience through its unmistakable presence on popular video games, various television shows and in films. This award-winning solo performance tells a true-life tale about the challenges of being a professional woman in a male-dominated field. The show features writer, performer and “recovering mathematician” Gioia De Cari, who charmingly brings to life more than 30 characters.

The story follows a young woman’s search for identity as she enrolls at the nation’s premier math and science institute. To her astonishment, professors suggest she stay home and have babies, grad students stalk her and a teacher relegates her to cookie duty.

Thodos Dance Chicago

“Breathtakingly athletic” and “powerfully beautiful” are among the ways audiences and the press describe Thodos Dance Chicago (TDC). The company’s mission of inspiring expression through dance education, creation and performance has

established TDC as an original force in modern dance.

TDC will perform A Light in the Dark, a work about Helen Keller, and a variety of other pieces. Members of KU’s University Dance Company (UDC) will perform Subtle Passages, which will be set during an intensive residency. UDC is a pre-professional performance ensemble that performs locally, regionally and nationally.

For the remarkable composer, trumpeter, educator and activist Sean Jones, the pursuit of jazz is a most serious endeavor. He discovered jazz and the trumpet at ten years old upon hearing Miles Davis. After receiving his master’s degree from Rutgers University, Jones toured and performed with his own ensembles and held the position as lead trumpeter with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

He continues to perform, record and teach while serving as chair of the Brass Department at the famed Berklee School of Music. At the Lied Center, he will perform with the University of Kansas Jazz Ensemble I led by Dan Gailey, director of Jazz Studies. The ensemble and its members have received numerous DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards during the past two decades, including four in the category of Best College Big Band in the U.S. or Canada.

The Demo reflects on a pivotal moment in Silicon Valley’s history and one of its most influential figures. Douglas Engelbart’s 1968 demonstration of the fundamental features of personal computing is known as “the mother of all demos.” It featured the public debut of the mouse, hypertext and other applications that have shaped modern technology. This groundbreaking event is reimagined in its concert version with a unique hybrid of music, media and demonstration by composers and performers Mikel Rouse and Ben Neill.

Rouse has created a trilogy of operas, books of string quartets, two feature-length films, and at least one recorded album every year for the past 20 years. Rouse attended the Kansas City Art Institute and the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He is joined by Ben Neill, the man who Time Out NY called, “a creative composer and genius performer,” and Time Out London called, “a musical powerhouse, a serious and individual talent.”

The Demo was commissioned and developed by the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in association with the eDream Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Branford Marsalis, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and renowned Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, will team up with quartet members Joey Calderazzo, piano; Eric Revis, bass; and Justin Faulkner, drums. Together they make up one of the most innovative and forward-thinking jazz ensembles around today.

Prior to teaming up with the quartet, Marsalis, the Tony Award-nominee and former leader of The Tonight Show band, spent a period touring with Sting and collaborating with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby.

PROJECT Trio was forged out of a collective desire to draw new and diverse audiences by performing high-energy, top-quality music. Combining world-class artists with the energy of rock stars, the trio is breaking down traditional ideas about chamber music. Gramophone Magazine recently singled out the genre-defying trio (flute, cello and bass) as “an ensemble willing and able to touch on the gamut of musical bases, ranging from Baroque to nu-Metal and taking in pretty much every stylism in between.”

Mike Daisey, who has been called a “master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by The New York Times, is known for weaving autobiography, gonzo journalism and unscripted performance to tell stories that define the world.

In this solo performance, Daisey will explore the disrupted landscape of technological change. He will examine a world where smartphones have transformed how we see the world, the dissolving sense of privacy and a shrinking sense of time as we train ourselves to speak in 140 character haiku. What are we gaining? What are we losing? And what are we becoming?

Eric Alexandertenor saxophone &

Harold Mabernpiano

Eric Alexander has earned praise from critics and has established his own voice within the bebop tradition. Arguably the most prolific tenor saxophonist of his generation, he has appeared as a leader, sideman, producer and composer on countless albums. Alexander tours the world and will be joined at the Lied Center by Harold Mabern, a Memphis native, considered one of the most enduring and dazzlingly skilled pianists of our time. Mabern’s career began in the late 1950s and he has recorded with Lee Morgan, Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Freddie Hubbard, among many others. Mabern and Alexander have appeared on more than 20 albums together.

Cyrus Chestnutpiano

“What makes Chestnut the best jazz pianist of his generation is a willingness to abandon notes and play space,” said Time Magazine. Chestnut reached for the piano before he could walk and by age nine was the church pianist at Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Chestnut’s improvisational skills and unique jazz-gospel and bop style is credited to his early years playing in church. Chestnut continually tours, playing live at jazz festivals around the world as well as clubs and concert halls.

Out of Bounds Presented by: Working Group Theatre

March 24 & 25School-only performances

Middle School .

The school-only performance tells the bullying story from the point of view of 14-year-old Amy and her peers. On a dare, Amy posted a picture of herself online that she shouldn’t have. Now that she’s transferred to a new school, she hopes she can make a fresh start. But when a rival finds the whole embarrassing history online, this time Amy has nowhere to run.

To reserve your free tickets, call or visit the Lied Center Ticket Office. Limit of four tickets per person.

The public performance highlights Allison, a single mother who spends

a whole school year trying to fight her daughter’s bullies while being haunted by memories of her own experiences growing up. This performance weaves together video, comic books and interviews to tell the stories of kids stuck on the outside and the adults who feel powerless to help them.
