PRESEASON NOTES• The Beach has made six-straight Big West Tournament appearances and has earned a WNIT berth in two of the last three seasons.• The 49ers will have an experienced squad in 2015-16 as the group has combined to play 402 career NCAA Division I games. • Long Beach State returns seven le erwinners and two starters from last year’s team that went 22-10 and advanced to the WNIT. It was LBSU’s fi rst 20-win season since 1999-00. The 49ers were also receiving votes in the AP Women’s Basketball Poll for three-straight weeks.• Despite the loss of three starters - Hallie Meneses, Alex Sanchez and Lauren Spargo - the Beach brings back more than 40 percent of its points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.• Raven Benton is Long Beach State’s top returning scorer (11.5 ppg) and rebounder (5.0 rpg). She has led the team in scoring in each of her fi rst two years and enters her junior campaign with 666 career points (11.9 ppg). She currently ranks 10th in school history in career free throw percentage (73.4), while her 218 made FTs are 35 shy of cracking the all- me top-10. Benton, whose 2014-15 season was cut short due to an injury, started 13 of 24 games played. She was a second-team All-Big West selec on as a sophomore and was named to the Big West All-Freshman Team in 2013-14.• Junior Anna Kim is LBSU’s returning assists leader. She totaled 77 assists (2.4/game), while also registering 9.0 points per ou ng in 2014-15. Over the last two seasons, she has played in every game, star ng 47 of 64 contests. She has been consistent from long distance where she has hit 36.8 percent of her 3-point a empts. That mark is ed for sixth in program history. Kim was selected to the Big West All-Freshman Team in 2013-14.• Chantel Dooley is the 49ers’ only senior this season. She is a sixth-year senior who has played in 89 career games (56 starts). In 2014-15, she posted career highs in fi eld goal percentage (40.3), 3-pointers made (13), free throw percentage (70.2), rebounds (122) and steals (53). She also averaged 5.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per ou ng.• Sophomore Gigi Hascheff will make her debut at the Beach a er si ng out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. As a true freshman at Sacramento State in 2013-14, Hascheff made 53 threes and averaged 11.5 points per game.

Jody Wynn enters her seventh year as the head women’s basketball coach at Long Beach State. Since her arrival, LBSU has seen rapid improvements with two Women’s Na onal Invita on Tournament (WNIT) bids and six-straight Big West Tournament appearances, including a run to the championship game in 2012. Last year, Wynn led the Beach to one of its most memorable seasons in recent history. Not only did the 49ers reach 20 wins for the fi rst me in 15 years, but their 22-10 overall record was also the program’s best since 1990-91. Long Beach State turned heads in the preseason where it went 13-1, which matched the best regular-season non-conference record in school history. The lone defeat came in the third game of the year and was a narrow fi ve-point over me loss to USC. Following that setback, LBSU proceeded to go on a 15-game winning streak, defea ng perennial na onal powerhouses Cal and LSU along the way. The Golden Bears were ranked 18th in the country at the me. The 49ers were recognized for their eff ort as they received votes in the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Poll for three-straight weeks. They also made their way into the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25, climbing as high as No. 9 in January. The season culminated in Long Beach State’s second WNIT berth in three years. Raven Benton and Hallie Meneses were both All-Big West selec ons with Benton being named to the second team and Meneses garnering honorable men on recogni on. In 2013-14, Wynn guided the 49ers to their fi rst winning record in nine seasons, fi nishing with an overall mark of 17-15. The Beach also advanced to its fi h consecu ve Big West Tournament under Wynn’s direc on. Lauren Spargo and Ella Clark garnered All-Big West honorable men on recogni on, while Raven Benton and Anna Kim were named to the conference’s all-freshman team. In 2012-13, Wynn guided LBSU to an at-large berth into the WNIT, marking the program’s fi rst postseason appearance since 2000. Long Beach State ended up hos ng eventual runner-up Utah in the fi rst round and dropped a narrow 56-49 decision. Devin Hudson and Alex Sanchez received All-Big West honors, while Hudson was also selected to the Big West All-Tournament Team. In 2011-12, the Beach fi nished sixth in the conference, but found themselves one win away from earning an automa c bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the Big West Tournament, LBSU came back from a 19-point defi cit on the road to defeat No. 2 seed Cal State Northridge in the fi rst round before upending top-seeded Cal Poly, 51-48, in a semifi nal match-up. Long Beach State then fell to UC Santa Barbara, 63-54, in its fi rst championship appearance in 11 years. Three 49ers were named to the all-tournament team, while Wynn also had two athletes, Tipesa Moorer and Alex Sanchez, garner All-Big West honors. In her fi rst year at the Beach (2009-10), Wynn led a senior-laden squad to a fourth-place fi nish in conference play with a 9-7 record. They swept eventual Big West Tournament champion UC Riverside and defending Big West champion UCSB during the regular season. LBSU also defeated the Gauchos on their home fl oor for the fi rst me in 19 years. Wynn saw three of her players earn All-Big West recogni on, including fi rst-team selec on Karina Figueroa. In 2010-11, Long Beach State fi nished sixth in the Big West and had two players named to the all-conference team. The 49ers also claimed the Big West Freshman of the Year and the Big West Hustle Player of the Year awards. Wynn came to Long Beach State with 13 years of collegiate coaching experience under her belt. She spent fi ve seasons as the senior assistant, recrui ng coordinator and head of scou ng at USC, where she was in charge of bringing in four na onally-ranked recrui ng classes, including the No. 1-ranked group in 2006. On the court, Wynn coached seven All-Pac-10 performers, a conference freshman of the year and a WNBA dra pick. In 2008-09, Wynn helped the Trojans advance to their fi rst-ever Pac-10 championship game, with fi ve players garnering all-league honors. In her fi rst season at USC (2004-05), the Women of Troy ed for second in the conference and rolled into the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst me since 1997, fi nishing the campaign ranked 22nd in the na on. One year later, the Trojans were back in the postseason, advancing to the second round. Wynn entered the coaching ranks in 1996-97 as an assistant at Pepperdine. She helped the Waves to six postseason appearances, including three bids to the NCAA Tournament. In her eight seasons in Malibu, Pepperdine had six 20-win campaigns and captured four West Coast Conference championships. The Brea, Calif., na ve was a four-year le erwinner and star ng guard at USC from 1993-96. During her playing career, the Trojans compiled a record of 79-35 (.693), won the 1994 Pac-10 Conference championship and made three consecu ve NCAA Tournament appearances. Wynn was also a prep standout at Brea Olinda High School, where she guided the Ladycats to three California state championships. She earned CIF-Southern Sec on and Orange County Player of the Year accolades in 1991 and 1992, while also being tabbed a USA Today and Streets & Smith honorable men on All-American. Wynn earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science from USC in 1996 and a ained a master’s in educa on from Pepperdine in 2000. The former Jody Anton is married to Derek Wynn and the couple has two daughters, Jada and Kaeli.

Derek Wynn begins his seventh season as an assistant coach at Long Beach State. Last year, the Beach put together one of its best campaigns in recent history. The 49ers (22-10) reached 20 wins for the fi rst me in 15 years and were receiving votes in the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Poll for three-straight weeks. They raced out to a 17-1 mark, the best start for Long Beach State since 1986-87. That run included a 15-game win streak which featured victories over LSU and na onally-ranked Cal. LBSU would go on to fi nish fourth in the Big West and earn its second WNIT berth in three years. Two seasons ago, the Beach posted its fi rst winning record in nine years, fi nishing with an overall mark of 17-15. Long Beach State also made its fi h-straight Big West Tournament appearance where it advanced to the quarterfi nals. In 2012-13, LBSU (16-16) earned an at-large bid to the WNIT, the fi rst for the program since 2000. The 49ers ended up hos ng eventual runner-up Utah, marking the fi rst-ever postseason basketball game to be held in the Walter Pyramid. In 2011-12, Wynn helped engineer Long Beach State’s run to the Big West Tournament championship game. The Beach defeated top-seeded Cal Poly and No. 2 seed Cal State Northridge to reach the tle game for the fi rst me since 2001.

In 2009-10, the 49ers were fourth in the conference standings with a 9-7 record, earning a bye into the Big West quarterfi nals. LBSU returned to the conference tournament in 2010-11. Wynn came to Long Beach State from USC where he served as an assistant from 2004-09. In each of his fi rst two seasons, the Trojans advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his s nt at USC, Wynn was an assistant at Pepperdine (2000-04). During his me in Malibu, he helped lead the Waves to fi ve postseason appearances and three West Coast Conference tles. Before entering the college ranks, Wynn spent six seasons (1994-99) as the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Upland High School, where he helped the Highlanders earn fi ve consecu ve CIF-Southern Sec on playoff berths. The 1996 and 1997 teams captured the Baseline League championship, while the 1999 team notched a school-best 25-4 mark. During his me at Upland, Wynn coached 12 athletes who went on to play collegiate basketball, including six Division I players. In addi on to coaching, Wynn taught physical educa on during the 1998-99 school year at St. Edward’s School in Corona, Calif., and worked extensively as a subs tute teacher in the Upland Unifi ed School District. As a prep, Wynn played basketball at Upland High, where he garnered All-Baseline League accolades as a senior. Wynn earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Cal State Fullerton in 1996 and a master’s and teaching creden al from Azusa Pacifi c in 1999. Wynn is married to 49er head coach Jody Wynn and the couple has two daughters, Jada and Kaeli.

Kari LaPlante enters her third season as an assistant

coach at Long Beach State.

Last year, LaPlante guided the Beach to one of its

best seasons in recent history. LBSU went 22-10 overall,

marking its fi rst 20-win campaign in 15 years. The 49ers also

put together the fi h-longest win streak in program history

at 15 games. That catapulted them to a 17-1 start, which

brought na onal a en on as they were receiving votes in

the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Poll for three-

straight weeks. Long Beach State went on to fi nish fourth in

the Big West standings and earned an at-large berth to the

WNIT.

In her fi rst season, LaPlante helped LBSU advance

to the Big West Tournament quarterfi nals. The Beach

fi nished the year at 17-15, marking the program’s fi rst

winning season since 2005-06.

Prior to her arrival at Long Beach State, LaPlante

played professionally for two years in Romania. In 2011-12,

LaPlante, a 6-foot-5 center, was a member of BCT Alexandria

where she averaged 14.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.

She earned MVP honors from Eurobasket.com for her

performance in the fi nal round of league play.

LaPlante then spent the 2012-13 season with ICIM

Arad, which claimed the Central European Women’s League

and the Romanian League championships. With ICIM Arad,

LaPlante was named the MVP and “Best 5” for the Trigoviste

Tournament.

Upon her return to the United States in May 2013,

LaPlante ran numerous camps, clinics and personal training

sessions in her hometown of Phoenix, Ariz.

Before her professional career, LaPlante played

four years at USC (2007-11). She was named to the Pac-

10 All-Freshman Team in 2008 and to the conference’s

all-defensive team in 2010. LaPlante also excelled in the

classroom as she was a two- me Pac-10 All-Academic

selec on, three- me USC Marks Scholar-Athlete and a

recipient of the Barbara Williams Academic Award.

LaPlante graduated from USC in 2011 with a

bachelor’s degree in communica ons and a minor in

business.

2015-16 COACHING STAFF

Paul Reed enters his second season as an assistant

coach at Long Beach State.

Reed made an immediate impact in his fi rst year at

the Beach as he helped LBSU to one of its best seasons in

recent history. The 49ers reached 20 wins for the fi rst me

since 1999-00, fi nishing with a 22-10 overall record. They

also put together a 15-game win streak, defea ng LSU and

na onally-ranked Cal along the way, and were receiving

votes in the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Poll for

three-straight weeks. Long Beach State went on to place

fourth in the conference, its best fi nish in fi ve years, while

also earning an at-large berth to the Women’s Na onal

Invita on Tournament (WNIT).

Reed came to the Beach from Cienega High

School in Vail, Ariz., where he served as the head girls’

varsity basketball coach for two years. During that me,

he compiled a 45-13 overall record and led the Bobcats

to a pair of appearances in the state tournament. In 2014,

Reed was named the Southern Arizona Coach of the Year

for the fourth me in his career a er guiding Cienega to a

regional championship and a runner-up fi nish at the Arizona

Girls’ State Basketball Division II Playoff s. They lost only two

games all season, concluding the campaign at 26-2.

Prior to his s nt at Cienega High School, Reed was

the head coach of the girls’ varsity team at Tucson High

School (2005-11). In his six years at the helm, Reed led the

Badgers to four state tournaments and three regional tles.

Reed was named the Southern Arizona Coach of the Year

in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and fi nished with a 129-63 overall

record. In addi on, Reed spent three years as a head coach

for the Tucson Heat Basketball Club. He mentored two

McDonald’s All-America nominees.

Reed was the director and founder of the Lady

Badger Basketball Camp and also worked the USC Elite

Camp. In addi on, he worked with the off season player

development of high school athletes in the Tucson area

as well as members of the University of Arizona basketball

team. Reed is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches

Associa on.

Reed earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology

from Langston University (Okla.) in 1995. He was a two-year

le erwinner in football and was a USA Today Small College

All-American defensive back. Reed went on to receive his

master’s in secondary educa on from the University of

Phoenix.
