Records indicate that Swift Creek Mill was in existence as early as 1663. It is believed to be the oldest grist mill in this country. Henry Randolph I, born in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, migrated to this country about 1640. In 1655, he acquired a large tract of land in Bermuda Hundred on Swift Creek where he erected the present mill.
An heir of Henry Randolph I, William Bland Randolph, deeded the mill to William Rowlett on February 20, 1805, and it became known as Rowlett’s Mill. In 1852, the Rowlett heirs conveyed the mill to the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company.
On May 9th and 10th, 1864, a battle was fought around the mill while General B.F. Butler’s Army of the James attempted to cross Swift Creek. Following the Civil War, the property became Schmidt’s Distillery, making corn whiskey. Following this, the property changed hands several times, was operated as a grist mill and became known in 1929 as Swift Creek Mill. It continued to operate as a grist mill until about 1956.
On December 2, 1965, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse opened its doors. To convert the old grist mill into a dinner theater required an addition to the three story building
to house the kitchen, dressing rooms and restrooms. Stairways were built leading to upper and lower dining levels, and to the theatre located on the top floor. Much of the old equipment in the mill was refurbished to lend a rustic atmosphere.
Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as both an historical landmark and cultural outlet for the talent of local artists, skilled actors, directors, designers and technicians whose
efforts have made possible the artistic achievements of the Mill. The 300 year old Swift Creek Mill has been made a Virginia Historical Landmark and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
As of fall 2013, Swift Creek Mill is now ADA-compliant, offering increased access and services to persons with disabilities. A monumental task, the renovations were completed following precise guidelines, and the iconic structure continues to retain its historic value and status.
December 2, 2015, marks the 50th anniversary of the theatre, making the Mill not only an historic structure but also an historic theatre - while looking forward to many more years serving South-Central Virginia residents and its visitors.

Oil PAinTings bY TERRY lACY
TERRY lACY is a long time central Virginia resident, currently living in Chester. Terry’s professional career is that of a jeweler and the sole proprietor of “ladysmith” for the past 38 years.
Terry began painting in 1990. she is a representational painter, with bold color and contrast ever present in her work. Terry prefers to work with oil paints, as did her mother and grandmother.
“Painting is an important form of self-expression for me. What i am attracted to in terms of subject matter is a sense of spirit or energy. if i can feel that energy, i try to portray it in my paintings. i feel that spirit out west, and have a strong western influence in my work. i am a gardener, and i feel that energy in my own gardens. i love to watch the growth and life force that healthy plants have. i aspire to paint the magic and mystery of a place or a landscape. i love to paint people…faces and figures within their relative landscapes. There are a myriad of human emotions to portray. i like to try to evoke a narrative. i have painted my dogs many times…certainly spirited creatures. i carry a camera with me to capture images of the beauty i encounter. i use those photos for reference for my paintings, and try to enhance them with memory of how i felt the moment the photo was taken.”
Terry lacy can be reached at her Chester studio at: 804-796-6875 You may view more of her work at: www.Facebook.com/TerrylacyFineArts
Terry lacy is a resident artist at Crossroads Art Center, located at 2016 staples Mill Road in Richmond. You may see her work there on a continuing basis.

Our biggest hit of the 2013-14 season was the remarkable “The Dixie Swim Club” – we even brought it back last summer as a bonus show, because so many people wanted to see it again (or were kicking themselves for having missed it the first time around!). It was a big hit all over again! Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten are
so good at writing insightful comedy for middle-aged women – perhaps, in part, to Mr. Wooten’s time as a writer and producer on the landmark TV sitcom, “The Golden Girls”.
So, I started reading some of their other scripts, and came upon “The Hallelujah Girls”! When I found it, I said “hallelujah”, too! Another great show featuring strong women trying to make the most of their lives – with a couple of gentlemen thrown in the mix this time for some romantic spice. Just the right show for a relaxing summer evening’s entertainment. Here’s to the ladies of the Spa-Dee-Dah!

BiographiesCATHERINE BuTLER COOPER (BuNNY) is beyond thrilled to be returning to the Mill after a twenty-five year hiatus. Past credits include The Sisters Rosesweig and Parade with Jewish Family Theatre; Cacophony Cabaret with TheatreLAB, Man of La Mancha, The Prisoner of Second Avenue and Bad Seed at Dogwood Dell; Born Yesterday with Henrico Theatre Company; Sleeping Beauty, The Snow Queen, The Jamestown Story, and The Ugly Duckling with Theatre IV; Hansel and Gretel, Into the Woods and Brigadoon with Swift Creek Mill Theatre; Guys and Dolls and Camelot with TheatreVirginia; and the outdoor drama Tecumseh.
JENNIFER FRANK (CARLENE) is back for her third summer at the Mill, having played Vernadette in The Dixie Swim Club and The Dixie Swim Club II, Electric Boogaloo. She has been performing in Richmond for many years with companies including Richmond Triangle Players, Quill Theatre, Virginia Rep, and of course, Swift Creek Mill. She’s having such fun with the gang. She would like to thank her third grade teacher, Mrs. Monk. Mrs. Monk not only agreed to produce a class play of a script Jennifer picked out, she also met Jennifer’s request to play the top billed Hansel, since Gretel was just there to set up Hansel’s jokes.
JACQuELINE JONES (NITA) shone here in The Dixie Swim Club, See How They Run, The Drowsy Chaperone, Blithe Spirit, Quilters, Arsenic and Old Lace, Flowers for Algernon, Steel Magnolias, Das Barbecü, Lucky Stiff, and Hank Williams: Lost Highway. She regularly appears in RVA-area theatres and originated roles in Theatre IV’s Hugs and Kisses, helping prevent child sexual abuse since 1983, VA Rep/Barksdale’s Songs From Bedlam, giving voice to the mentally ill, and Firehouse Theatre Project’s Birth, chronicling childbirth in America. Jackie mentors with the Richmond Jewish Coalition for Literacy. She dedicates her performance to her Oma, a real-life Avon lady till she was 90! www.jacquelinejones.net
RICHARD KOCH (BOBBY DWAYNE) is very happy to once again be on Swift Creek Mill Theatre’s stage. Other Swift Creek shows include Two Bits, Beyond the Rainbow, The Drowsy Chaperone, Blithe Spirit, The Foreigner, A Tuna Christmas, Arsenic and Old Lace, Run for Your Wife, The Cocoanuts, Floyd Collins, See How They Run, Out of Order, The Fantasticks, Greetings and A Few Good Men. Richard is Performing Arts Manager for The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen as well as a free-lance actor who has also performed at Theatre at the Bolling-Haxall House, VA Repertory Theatre, Henley Street Theatre, Cadence Theatre, Richmond Shakespeare & film, TV and radio. Richard is pleased to be working with such a wonderful team. In his spare time, along with the beautiful Miss Vicki, he enjoys rummaging thru antique shops looking for rare two legged milking stools. He hopes you enjoy the show!
VICKI MCLEOD (SuGAR LEE) is, as always, happy to be back at The Mill. Richmond audiences may remember her from many productions over the past twenty-five years. Some of her favorite roles include: Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday at Barksdale Theatre; Bella in Angel Street at The Bolling Haxall House; and Harpo Marx in The Cocoanuts here at Swift Creek Mill. Vicki’s past is also furnished with a considerable amount of on-camera regional and national commercial, training film and voice-over work. She is passionate about fitness and is a personal trainer, certified through the American Council On Exercise, specializing in home fitness. Vicki has shared life, on and off the stage, with her castmate, Richard Koch, for the past twenty-eight years.

JODY SMITH STRICKLER (MAVIS) is an actor/writer who has been working in professional theatre since the 1970’s. She began acting at the Academy Theatre in Atlanta, GA, then helped found the Palmtree Playhouse in Sarasota, FL (now operating as Florida Studio Theatre). She completed an MFA at VCU in 1980 (emphasis in performance.) She has continued to work professionally in the Richmond area since that time, with projects in theatre as well as film. Jody has also taught acting at both VCU and the University of Richmond. Favorite roles at the Mill include Diana in Dixie Swim Club, Emily Gorski in Greetings, and M’lynn in Steel Magnolias. Other Richmond credits include Mother Burnside in Mame, Sook in Holiday Memories, Mattie Fay in August: Osage County, Ann Kron in Well, Rosie Epps in The Scorched Earth, Aunt Sally in Fifth of July, and Emilia in Comedy of Errors.
MIKE WHITE (PORTER) finally took the plunge and made it. Hallelujah!! After watching so many quality productions here, he is thrilled to make his debut on the Swift Creek Mill stage! Thank you, Tom, for this opportunity to work/play with a group of supremely talented people!! Mike has been acting and on stage for more than 80 productions over the past 25+ years. Not a bad record for someone who was dragged kicking and screaming into this great avocation. Most of the time these days, you may have seen him on stage at either Fort Lee or the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. He has also played on stages in North Carolina and South Korea – while he was stationed with the Army in both locations. Mike was last seen this spring at Fort Lee as King Sextimus in Once Upon a Mattress. Mike is a retired Army officer and current Civil Servant with Defense Contract Management Agency. Favorite roles and/or productions include Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, Pap Finn in Big River, Mister Potter in It’s a Wonderful Life: The Musical, and Andrew McNair in 1776. Mike’s eternal love goes to his fabulous Tricia! Thanks for all that you are and everything you do!! Love also to Kevin and Jennifer; Leah – and David, too; and Moms White and Robinson!
JOY WILLIAMS (CRYSTAL) is very happy to be back on the Mill stage this summer, after performing in The Dixie Swim Club here for the previous two summers. Favorite Mill roles include: Sheree in The Dixie Swim Club, M’Lynn in Steel Magnolia’s, Lady Manley-Prowe in Something’s Afoot, Bella in Lost in Yonkers, Maria in Lend Me a Tenor, and Drifty the Snowman in the Youth Christmas shows, to name a few. As well as acting and directing, Joy runs her own business, Giggle in Pink, which specializes in handmade clothing and accessories for newborns to tweens. Check us out at www.giggleinpink.com. Special thanks to her husband, Eric, who’s holding down the fort, and to Mum, Cory, Sean, Arlie, and Michael for their unwavering support. Please enjoy the show!
