Five Earn All-America honorsUNC led the nation in men’s tennis All-America selections in 2016 with five Tar Heels

earning the honor. Twenty-seven teams had at least one player honored in singles or dou-bles, but Carolina was the only one to put five on the list. Virginia was second with four, and UCLA, Florida, Wake Forest and Texas A&M had three each.

UNC is the first ACC men’s tennis program ever to have five All-America honorees in one year.

Earning All-America honors for UNC were senior Brett Clark (doubles), sophomore Robert Kelly (doubles), junior Jack Murray (doubles), junior Ronnie Schneider (singles) and junior Brayden Schnur (doubles.)

Schnur earned All-America honors for the third year in a row, after being recognized for singles in his freshman and sophomore years. He is just the third player in program history to earn All-America honors in three separate years.

The honor was the first for Clark, Kelly, Murray and Schneider.

UNC Claims Regional HonorsThe UNC men’s tennis coaching staff and a Tar Heel senior are recipients of Intercol-

legiate Tennis Association Division I Region Awards, as announced Monday by the ITA.UNC plays in the Carolina Region and from that pool, senior Brett Clark was named the

ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner. Clark, who is from Naples, Fla., serves as a team captain for the Tar Heels. He is the sixth UNC player to win the re-gional award, the first since Jose Hernandez in 2012.

Carolina head coach Sam Paul was named Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year. It’s the fifth time he’s won the honor, and the first since 2007.

Associate Head Coach Tripp Phillips was named the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year. It’s the second time he has won the honor, with the other coming in 2011.

Schneider, Schnur, Clark, Kelly Earn NCAA BidsThree Tar Heel men’s tennis players were among the 64 from across the nation who

received singles bids into the NCAA Division I Championships. Senior Brett Clark and juniors Ronnie Schneider and Brayden Schnur received at-large selections.

Additionally, Clark and sophomore Robert Kelly earned the ACC’s automatic qualifica-tion into the doubles bracket and were seeded third overall in the 32-team field. Schnur and junior Jack Murray were among five alternates to the doubles field and eventually were admitted to the field and reached the quarterfinals, earning All-America honors. Clark and Kelly were unable to compete in doubles after Kelly sustained an injury.

Back to TulsaFor seven of the Tar Heels, the NCAA Tournament marked the second action of the sea-

son in Tulsa, following a trip in October for the ITA All-American Championships. Blaine Boyden, Brett Clark, Stuart DePaolo, Robert Kelly, Anu Kodali, Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider all competed in singles action there, with Schneider reaching the quarterfinals.

• Clark and Kelly finished as the runners-up in doubles, falling to Virginia’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7) in the championship match.

The three teams have representa-tives from 12 of the institutions, led by Virginia’s six selections. UNC and Virginia Tech each had four players voted All-ACC, while NC State and Wake Forest each had three honorees. Florida State, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame had to All-ACC selections, and there was one honoree each for Clemson, Duke, Miami and Louisville.

Tar Heels at the RammysThe men’s tennis team earned two honors at the Rammy Awards, UNC’s

annual athletic department recogni-tion show, held on April 18. The team was honored for Best Upset, for its win over top-ranked Virginia, the host team, in the championship of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February.

The team also received an ACC Top Six for Service Award, which goes to six individuals or teams at each conference school who have been extremely active in communi-ty service during the school year. The men’s tennis team won for the first time in program history.

Team members were nominees for several other categories:Breakthrough Athlete: Jack Murray• This award goes to a non-freshman who has made great strides. Mur-

ray, a junior who has gone 17-4 this spring, was beaten out by Joel Berry II, who was MVP of the ACC Men’s Basketball Championship as Caroli-na claimed the title.

Record-breaking Performance: Brett Clark• Clark has amassed more than 100 singles and 100 doubles wins in his

career at UNC. The Rammy went to seniors Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige of the men’s basketball team.

Outstanding Championship Performance: Ronnie Schneider• Schneider was named Most Outstanding Player of the National Team

Indoor Championships. The Rammy went to Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay of the UNC women’s tennis team.

• Senior Brayden Schnur was a nominee for Male Athlete of the Year, which was won by men’s basketball’s Brice Johnson

• The team was nominated for Most Outstanding Team, which was won by the NCAA runner-up men’s basketball team.

Additionally, Schneider served as a presenter, announcing the Rammy for Outstanding Newcomer.

Men’s Tennis Recognized For Outstanding APRThe men’s tennis team was one of seven squads at UNC honored by

the NCAA for placing among the top 10 percent nationally in Academic Progress Rates in their respective sports. The men’s tennis team earned a perfect score of 1000 for the fifth consecutive year and ninth time overall in the APR’s 12 years.

The APR is measures a team’s academic success by tracking the prog-ress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligi-bility, retention and graduation. This year’s award is based on a four-year average for the 2011-12 through 2014-15 academic years.

Men’s tennis joined women’s tennis, women’s fencing, women’s golf,

gymnastics, men’s swimming and diving and volleyball in top-10 recog-nition at UNC.

Tar Heels Earn Conference Weekly HonorsUNC players earned ACC Player of the Week honors on four occasions

this season:Jan. 26: Brett ClarkClark helped lead the 10th-ranked Tar Heels (4-0) to two homecourt

victories in ITA Kickoff competition. In a 4-1 win over No. 50 Indiana, Clark and doubles partner Robert Kelly won 6-4 in the No. 1 spot and he also picked up a singles win at No. 3. Clark won in the same two spots against No. 40 NC State, defeating the Wolfpack’s top doubles team 6-0 and then beating NC State’s Ivan Saveljic 6-4, 6-2.

Feb. 9: MurrayMurray, a junior from Beverly Hills, Mich., won both of his matches as

No. 7 North Carolina upset No. 5 Oklahoma, 4-3, in Chapel Hill. He and Brayden Schnur won their doubles match over Sooners Axel Alvarez and Spencer Papa in the No. 2 spot. The Tar Heels dropped the doubles point for the first time all season, but Murray led the comeback by defeating No. 92 Alex Ghilea 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot.

Feb. 16: Brayden SchnurSchnur helped lead UNC to the program’s first-ever ITA National In-

door Team Championship. The Tar Heels beat No. 1 Virginia, the tourna-ment’s host, 4-2 on Monday for the title. The UNC win broke the Cava-liers’ streak of 140 consecutive wins over ACC opponents.

Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Schnur earned two key wins in the tournament, including one over defending NCAA singles champion Ryan Shane of Virginia, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(4), that tied the championship match at 2-2.

April 5: Brayden SchnurSchnur won two singles and two doubles matches during the week, all

against top-50 opponents. On April 1, as the top-ranked Tar Heels hosted No. 3 Virginia, Schnur teamed with Jack Murray at No. 2 doubles to beat eighth-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger. At No. 1 sin-gles, he held on for a tie-breaker win over No. 8 Ryan Shane, the defend-ing NCAA singles champion.

On April 3 against No. 6 Wake Forest, Schnur and Murray, ranked 17th, teamed up at No. 2 doubles to beat the 48th-ranked pair of Petros Chryso-choes and Jon Ho. In singles, Schnur beat 16th-ranked Skander Mansouri in straight sets.

The Tar Heels beat Virginia 4-3 and fell to Wake by the same score.

Tar Heels at the TopIn the ITA rankings of April 5, North Carolina had the top-ranked dou-

bles team in both the men’s and women’s Division I tennis rankings. Ju-nior Hayley Carter and senior Whitney Kay were atop the women’s dou-bles rankings, and senior Brett Clark and sophomore Robert Kelly led the men’s rankings.

It marked the first time in Carolina tennis history that Tar Heels had topped both the men’s and women’s doubles polls in the same week.

Clark and Kelly moved up from No. 3 to No. 1 in the poll after two wins over highly-ranked teams. On April 1 they beat the No. 2 team of Virgin-ia’s Ryan Shane and Luca Corintelli, and on April 3 they beat the No. 10 team of Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri. They were No. 1 in the poll of Jan. 5 following a successful fall, but fell from that spot in the Feb. 10 poll.

Team MickThroughout the season, the Tar Heels had an honorary 13th member of

their team, a young fan named Mick. The 4-year-old is undergoing treat-ment for cancer at UNC Children’s Hospital and was connected with the team through an organization called Team Impact.

In Mick’s honor, each Tar Heel played with “MM” on the back of his shoes during the ITA National Indoor Championship and the team dedi-cated its win to Mick. When the Tar Heels were honored on the court at the UNC-Duke men’s basketball game later that week, Mick joined the

fun, accompanying the team onto the court, even though it was way past his bedtime. He and his family attended several matches during the season and the Tar Heels have visited with Mick at UNC Children’s Hospital.

ITA National Team Indoors ChampionshipThe North Carolina men’s tennis team won its first ITA National Team

Indoor Championship in program history on Feb. 15 defeating host and top-ranked Virginia 4-2 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

With Virginia leading 2-1, juniors Brayden Schnur and Ronnie Schnei-der fought to wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, both pulling out third-set tie-breaker victories to pull UNC ahead. In the third set, Schneider over-came a 5-3 deficit with his opponent, second-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkow-ski, twice serving for the match.

UNC then led 3-2 and junior Jack Murray sealed the championship with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 win at No. 4.

“‘Happiness’ is a huge understatement,” Murray said afterward. “Words can’t begin to describe how it feels to get the job done for my team and coaches. Our team has worked so hard and this was the epitome of all that work.”

The Tar Heels, ranked No. 7 nationally and playing as the third seed in the tournament, improved to 10-0 on the season with the win. The Cava-liers (8-1) had won 140 consecutive matches against ACC opponents, the longest such streak in conference history in any sport.

Virginia is a five-time ITA National Indoors champion, while the Tar Heels were playing in their first-ever final and had never even reached the semifinals prior to this year. The Cavaliers ran out to an early 2-0 lead, winning the doubles point and also the fifth singles spot, where soph-omore Robert Kelly suffered his first loss of the year, 6-2, 6-3 to J.C. Aragone.

Playing at No. 6, freshman Anu Kodali won in straight sets get the Tar Heels on the board at 2-1.

“It was a great college match,” said UNC coach Sam Paul. “We know Virginia has a great team and it was a battle all the way to the end. I’m so proud of my guys and how hard they fought all the way through. Nobody hung their heads after the doubles point – they just kept working hard. I’m really happy for them.”

Schneider, Murray Honored for PlayRonnie Schneider was name MVP of the ITA National Indoor Team

Championship. The junior business major from Bloomington, Ind., helped lead UNC to its first national championship on Monday in Charlottesville, Va. UNC’s Jack Murray, a junior economics major from Beverly Hills, Mich., joined Schneider on the 2016 ITA All-Tournament Team.

The squad, which includes one player at each singles spot and three dou-bles teams, was selected by a panel of the 16 participating head coaches from last weekend’s event.

Schneider, ranked No. 23 in the nation in singles, was 4-0 at the No. 2 spot as the Tar Heels beat No. 14 Texas Tech, No. 8 Ohio State, No. 9 UCLA and No. 1 Virginia. He secured the clinching point in the team’s 4-2 semifinal victory over UCLA, and his come-from-behind, three-set win over second-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia in the tourna-ment final moved UNC within a point of clinching its first championship. The Tar Heels did just that moments later, as Murray won at No. 4 singles to secure the 4-2 victory.

Murray’s win in the championship came 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 over No. 78 Mac Styslinger of Virginia. He also beat No. 18 Herkko Pollanen of Ohio State in the quarterfinals. His other two matches were unfinished because the Tar Heels had already claimed the team victory.

This is the ninth annual ITA National Men’s Team Indoor All-Tourna-ment Team and the first time that a Tar Heel has been selected as MVP. Murray and Schneider were joined on the All-Tournament team by UC-LA’s Mackenzie McDonald at No. 1, Virginia’s Collin Altamirano at No. 3, Virginia’s J.C. Aragone at No. 5 and Ohio State’s Martin Joyce at No. 6. UCLA took the No. 1 doubles honor while Virginia claimed No. 2 and No. 3.

Paul Reaches 400Sam Paul, in his 23rd year as the head coach at UNC, earned his 400th

career win on Feb. 29. Before the day was out, he also had his 401st.That afternoon, the Tar Heels defeated Campbell 7-0, playing on the

outdoor courts at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center for the first time this spring. In the evening, back inside, top-ranked UNC beat N.C. Central 7-0. The Tar Heels didn’t drop a set in either match.

Paul finished the day with a 401-185 record. In reflecting on the mile-stone, he gave plenty of credit to associate head coach Tripp Phillips, who is in his 10th season on the UNC staff. “I’ve had a lot of help, a lot of great players and great people,” Paul said. “I’m lucky to have Tripp and fortunate to be at the University of North Carolina.”

Incoming Tar HeelsIn November, UNC announced the signing of two outstanding pros-

pects, Simon Friis Soendergaard and Joshua Peck, to National Letters of Intent. They will join the team in the fall of 2016.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Simon and Josh to the University of North Carolina,” UNC coach Sam Paul said. “Simon has significant experience playing all over the world, while Josh has benefitted from training under the Tennis Canada umbrella the last two years. We expect them to con-tinue to grow and develop with our team in Chapel Hill. Both Simon and Josh have great work ethic and outstanding character, and have shown their potential on the international stage. They will without a doubt have a huge impact on our program.”

Soendergaard, a native of Copenhagen, Denmark, was ranked as high as No. 31 in the ITF Junior World Rankings. In September, he advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the ITF Futures in Turkey. Sondergaard was coached by Kenneth Carlsen, who achieved a top 50 ATP singles rank-ing and played in 46 Grand Slams during his career. Soendergaard was a competitor in the main draws of all four Grand Slams during his junior career, including reaching the Junior U.S. Open doubles quarterfinals. In addition, Soendergaard captured one of the ITF’s most prestigious events, winning the Mayors Cup (Grade A) in Osaka, Japan. He also has won 30 Danish titles (singles, doubles, team).

Peck, from Calgary, Alberta, is currently ranked No. 3 in the Canadi-an Boys U18’s. Peck has an impressive run of events over the past two summers. In July, at the age of 16, he captured his first ITF Pro Circuit MD singles win at the Kelowna Futures. Peck also won the ITF (Grade 4) Junior singles title in Vancouver. Last summer, Peck reached the doubles semifinals at the Pan American ITF in Tulsa and won the doubles title of the Saville ITF in Edmonton.

Peck won the U16 Canadian Jr. National (outdoor) Doubles title in Mis-sissauga and was a Doubles Finalist at both the U18 Outdoor and Indoor Junior Nationals.
