LAST TIME OUT - UTSA• Last season, eight straight points in the final 44 seconds by guard Ayriel Anderson lifted the Bobcats to a 57-53 victory over the Roadrunners. In the final moments of the game, the Bobcats found themselves down as many as seven before producing an 11-0 run to defeat UTSA.

• Anderson finished the game with 12 points while the ‘Cats were led by Meghan Braeuer and Erin Peoples with 15 points apiece. Texas State recorded 10 steals while forcing 20 UTSA turnovers.

NEW FACES, NEW LOOKS• There are many new faces on the Texas State women’s basketball team, both on the bench in terms of coaching staff as well as players.

• The Bobcats welcome several new faces on their coaching staff, including the return of coach Chandra Dorsey. Dorsey spent the first three years of Coach Z’s tenure at Texas State as an assistant coach before a one-year stint at Wichita State. She returns to San Marcos as the associate head coach.

• Assistant coaches Laura Terry and Addie Lees are also new to the program. Terry comes from Weber State where she spent a year as an assistant and Lees becomes a Bobcat after being the head coach of Clarendon College last year.

• Texas State brings to the table four freshman this season in Toshua Leavitt, Devin Gray, Kiani Lurry, and De’Jionae Calloway.

• Toshua Leavitt, a freshman from Nixa, Mo., set a school record for threes in a season as well as threes in her career. She scored a career-high 51 points as a senior.

• Devin Gray, another three-point shooter who comes from

Wellington, Fla., set a school record with nine made three’s in a game at Oxbridge Academy.

• De’Jionae Calloway was named to the MBCA Class 5 Girls All-State team as a senior. She averaged 13.1 points and 7.8 rebounds that year.

• Kiani Lurry, a freshman from Miami, Fla., was named First-Team All-County by the Miami Herald in 2013 and 2015.

• Transfer McKinley Bostad, who played her freshman campaign at Arkansas, will have to sit out this season due to the NCAA transfer rules. Bostad was named SEC Freshman of the Week while at Arkansas.

• Another transfer, Amber Jones, is expected to make some noise in her junior season as she came to Texas State after earning back-to-back All-Conference honors at Florida State College at Jacksonville.

LOOKING AT THE RETURNERS• This season, the Bobcats are going to have to figure out how to work without Second-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection in Erin Peoples, as Peoples will sit out due to an ACL injury earlier in the preseason. Peoples has scored over 1,000 points for Texas State and led the team last year with 13.5 points per contest.

• Texas State does, however, return senior guard Ayriel Anderson, one of the most exciting players to watch in the Sun Belt Conference. Anderson is a Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Second-Team pick and was second last season in total points scored with 10.9 per game.

CAREER STATISTICS

• Anderson currently sits just 62 points away from cracking 1,000 points in her career and is also just 56 three’s away from being all-time leader for career three-pointers at Texas State.

ALL-TIME THREE POINT LEADERS 1. Wagner, Sarah (1996-2000) ------------------------ 196 2. Ford, Diamond (2009-13) --------------------------- 178 3. • The Bobcats will also return Kaitlin Walla and Ti’Aira Pitts as last year, ACL injuries sidelined both of them.

• Kaitlin Walla, before her injury, shot over 53 percent from beyond the arc and 49 percent from the floor. She only played in eight games last season for Texas State.

• The Bobcats also return sophomores Ericka May, Taeler Deer and Whitney Apari. May played in all 32 games for Texas State and recorded a career-high 12 rebounds in the Women’s Basketball Invitational game against Oral Roberts.

• Taeler Deer was just two rebounds shy of recording the only triple-double of the season last year against UL Monroe. Deer also tallied a career-high 23 points last year in conference play against Appalachian State.

NEW RULES TO LOOK OUT FOR• This season, the NCAA has implemented many new rule changes for both the men and the women.• Several of the rule changes include the women moving to a four-quarter format versus the two halves in previous seasons. Each coach will now receive three 30-second timeouts and one full timeout over the span of the contest.

The full timeout can be used at any time and if there is not a timeout used in the first half, one is deducted from the second half.

• An addition change that fans will notice deals with the pep band and any amplified music during the game. Now, bands and amplified music may be played during any dead ball period.

• Another rule change is the bonus free throw change. With the move from halves to quarters, a team is awarded two free throws for each common foul beginning with the fifth team foul in a period.

• During the last 59.9 seconds of the game (fourth period or any extra period) when the team in control of the ball, or the team who is to be awarded a throw-in in their backcourt, is granted a timeout, the team will have the option to move the throw-in sport to the 28-foot line in the frontcourt on the same side of the playing court as the scorers’ table.

THE BOBCATS 2015-16 SCHEDULE• The Texas State women’s basketball schedule features 20 conference match-ups as well as 10 non-conference games. This marks the first season since joining the Sun Belt Conference where the Bobcats have had the same competitors in back-to-back seasons.

• The Bobcats non-conference schedule is one that is sure to help prepare the ‘Cats for Sun Belt Conference play. The non-conference slate features several Power Five Conference opponents including Texas A&M, Iowa State, Duke, and Missouri.

ZENARAE ANTOINEHEAD COACH COLORADO STATE, 1998FIFTH SEASON AT TEXAS STATE 2014, 2015 WBI TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

Zenarae Antoine is in her fifth season as the head coach at Texas State. In her first season,

she led one of the best turnarounds in school history, taking a 9-20 team the year before, to 17-14 including the school’s first conference tournament win since 2003. Since, she has led the team to back-to-back appearances in the WBI Tournament in 2014 and 2015.

In the 2013-14 season, Antoine led the Bobcats to their first postseason appearance since the 2008 WNIT with an invitation to the WBI Tournament. Texas State earned the invitation after posting a 12-6 Sun Belt Conference record and winning the Sun Belt Tournament quarterfinal game against Georgia State by a score of 78-44. Texas State then duplicated its postseason run in 2015 with its second-straight WBI Tournament appearance after finishing 11-9 in SBC play and a victory against UT Arlington in the SBC Tournament quarterfinal game.

In the 2014 and 2015 SBC Tournament, Texas State was one of just three teams to make it to the semifinal game each season. While competing in the 2015 semifinal contest, junior guard Erin Peoples became the 15th player in school history and third under Coach Z to reach the 1,000-point mark.

In its first season in the Sun Belt in 2013-14, Texas State went above and beyond preseason expectations. The Bobcats finished tied for third place after being chosen ninth in the SBC preseason poll. The Bobcats finished the season with a 16-16 record, the second most wins for Antoine since arriving in San Marcos in 2011.

During the 2013-14 season, Ashley Ezeh became the 14th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Ezeh finished the season in four different top-10 charts including ninth in points with 1,310, seventh in rebounds with 711, third in blocked shots with 62, and seventh in free throws made with 276. Ezeh was named Second-Team All-SBC, her second all-conference recognition after earning Southland Conference Third-Team honors in 2011-12.

As a member of the WAC in 2012-13, Texas State won its first game against a Big 12 opponent since 2005, after beating TCU, 91-80, at Strahan Coliseum. Earlier in the year, the Bobcats won their first game against a Sun Belt opponent since 2005, defeating North Texas, 86-84, in Denton.

Antoine’s high scoring style is evident as the Bobcats led the WAC for the majority

of the year in scoring offense, finishing the year 40th in the

country with an average of 69.7 points per game. That total

was in part due to the team’s 100-67 win against San Jose

State in the regular season finale, marking the first

time since 1988 the Bobcats scored 100 points against a Division I opponent.

Also during the 2012-13 season, Diamond Ford set the school single season scoring record under the direction of Antoine with 644 points, including 27

in the final game of her collegiate career. Erin Peoples was named to the WAC All-Freshman team and Ayriel Anderson was the best three-point shooter in the WAC at 43 percent in conference play.

In 2011-12, she coached two players to earn all-conference honors; the first time since 2008 the school had two players on the postseason team. Known for offense, Antoine led the team to the highest scoring average in the league and had one of her players, Diamond Ford, become the 13th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark as well as finishing fourth in single season history in points. She also led the Bobcats to their first conference tournament

appearance in four years during her inaugural season. The team reached the Southland Conference Tournament, and recorded its first win at the event since 2003 after beating Sam Houston State in the quarterfinals.

Antoine came to San Marcos after serving four seasons as an assistant coach at Arkansas. Including Arkansas, Coach Antoine has been at numerous Division I programs, including Louisville, Ohio and College of Charleston. In 2010-11 Arkansas went 22-12, including a berth to the WNIT, where it advanced to the quarterfinals. In the first game of the WNIT, the Razorbacks beat Southland Conference opponent Lamar, 91-65.

During her time with the Razorbacks, she served as the recruiting coordinator. She helped the Razorback’s sign back-to-back nationally-ranked recruiting classes that included two players who earned All-Southeastern Conference recognition as freshmen (Lyndsay Harris and C’eira Ricketts).

In addition to managing the Razorbacks’ extensive recruiting data base as the staff’s recruiting coordinator, Antoine also worked with the wing guards and small forwards and served as the coaching staff’s liaison with the Razorback academic staff.

Prior to Arkansas, Antoine was the recruiting coordinator at Louisville, and guided the Cardinals to nationally-ranked recruiting classes her four seasons at Louisville. Her last two recruiting classes were No. 26 for 2006 and No. 25 for 2007. Among the most notable signees for the Cardinals were Kodak All-American and 2007 Big East Player of the Year Angel McCoughtry and Kodak Junior College All-American Helen Johnson.

Antoine went to Louisville after spending two seasons as an assistant at Ohio University, her second stint at the school. While at Ohio, whose mascot is also the Bobcats, she coached both the guards and the posts, and was in charge of scouting opponents.

Between stints at Ohio, Antoine spent a season as an assistant coach for the College of Charleston, where she served as the lead recruiter for the southern region and also coached posts. Her administrative duties included coordinating travel, academics and community service.

Antoine received her master’s degree from Ohio in 2000 where her coaching career began as a graduate assistant. She coached post players and helped out with academics.

Antoine played at Colorado State where she was a three-year starter for the Rams. She played her senior season for head coach Tom Collen, with whom she would work later at Louisville and Arkansas, as CSU went 24-6 and reached the NCAA second round during his first season as head coach.

Before working with posts and guards during her coaching career, Antoine was an anchor in the middle for CSU as a player. She finished her career ranked third in career blocked

shots and seventh in rebounding. She also ranks high for single season rebounds and blocked shots. During her career, CSU won two league titles and made two NCAA appearances. As a coach, Antoine has reached the postseason a total of seven times, going twice to the NCAA Tournament (2005, 2006) along with three WNIT appearances (2004, 2009,

2011) and two WBI Tournament appearances (2014, 2015). Including her playing career, her total is nine, after making the second-round of the NCAA Tournament twice during her days at Colorado State.

Overall, she has had five recruiting classes receive national recognition. One of her most notable signings was Angel McCoughtry, a three-time WBCA/State Farm All-American and 2009 WNBA Draft Number One pick and Rookie of the Year. She has developed 10 All-Conference players.

Antoine is married to Ronald Antoine who is the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Fresno State

University. Antoine graduated from James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas and earned her bachelor’s degree in physical science with minors in geology and statistics at Colorado State in 1998. In 2000, she received her master’s in athletic administration at Ohio University. Antoine is a member of the WBCA, the AFCWA, and a 2002 graduate, the inaugural class, of the former Women’s Coaches Academy and now Alliance of Women’s Coaches. She is also the Sun Belt Conference Captain for the WBCA, the Women’s Basketball representative for the Sun Belt Conference Sport Committee and is in the second of a three-year appointment as a voter on the WBCA Coaches Poll. The Antoine’s have twin sons, Zavier and Zachary, and a one-year old, Zayden.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The size of the No. 13 Texas A&M Aggies proved to be too much Friday evening as the Texas State women’s basketball team fell in the season opener by a score of 87-50. The defeat marks the first loss in a season opener since head coach Zenarae Antoine has been at the helm of the Bobcat program.

With ball handling struggles early on the in the contest, the Bobcats collected themselves and outscored the Aggies, 18-16, in the final 10 minutes of play with Aggie starters remaining in the game. The Bobcats shot 7-for-11 from the field in the fourth quarter and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

“What I appreciate about the game is that the team was able to step up there toward the end and show poise,” stated Antoine. “One thing I was clear about going into the fourth quarter is to win the next quarter and continue to go with our princi-ples of what we’ve been preaching.”

Texas A&M took an early lead over the Bobcats and capitalized on Texas State turnovers throughout the evening. In the first half, Texas State recorded 16 turnovers of which the Aggies converted into 16 points. Texas State improved in the second half of play with just eight turnovers, seven of which were in the third quarter.

Two freshman, Toshua Leavitt and Devin Gray, had impactful games for their first collegiate contests as combined they made four of the Bobcats eight made three-pointers. Leavitt finished the game with six points, three boards, three assists and just one turnover. Gray came in in the fourth quarter and in just nine minutes of play, the Wellington, Fla. native went 2-for-3 from the floor and a perfect 2-for-2 from long range.

Taeler Deer and Kaitlin Walla led the Bobcats Friday evening with seven points apiece. Walla, in her first game back since December 2014, went 3-for-7 from the floor with three rebounds in 20 minutes of play.

Freshman Kiani Lurry and sophomore Ericka May led Texas State with six boards apiece.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Down 14 with the fourth quarter to play, the Texas State women’s basketball team rallied with a 28-6 run in the final 10 minutes to earn a 52-44 victory over St. Edward’s in the home opener Sunday afternoon. The victory marks the first win of the season for the ‘Cats as they improve to 1-1 on the year.

Back-to-back made three pointers by Kaitlin Walla with just under eight minutes to play provided the spark and cut the Hilltopper's double-digit lead to four, putting Texas State right back in the ball game. A pair of lay-ups by Taeler Deer as well as one from Ayriel Anderson would be the combination needed to tie up the game and continue to push the momentum in favor of the Bobcats.

Anderson's lay-up sparked additional momentum for the 'Cats as just seconds earlier she earned her third takeaway of the game in the Bobcat's offensive court.

Texas State finished the final three minutes of play on a 12-4 run including six straight free throws by Walla and Anderson to send St. Edward's, who led for all by three and a half minutes of the game, home with a loss.

The Bobcats got off to a slow start with just five points in the first quarter of play. Tempo picked up as the second quarter progressed, but quickly slowed down for the 'Cats in the third. With just 24 points through three quarters, the Bobcats more than doubled their score to go ahead of the Hilltoppers for the victory.

Deer (11) and Walla (10) each finished the game with double-digit points for the first time in the 2015-16 season and Ericka May led all Bobcats with nine rebounds. The 'Cats finished the game shooting 30.8 percent from beyond the arc while holding the Hilltoppers scoreless from three. From the line, Texas State went 14-for-19 at a clip of 73.7 percent.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A career-high 32 points by sophomore Taeler Deer as well as 25 forced turnovers by the Texas State defense led the women’s basketball team to a 64-62 victory over North Texas Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum. The win improves Texas State to 2-1 on the year.

The ‘Cats quickly found themselves in a seven-point hole early in the contest, but a 14-8 run including a jumper by Ti’Aira Pitts to cap off the first quarter put the Bobcats up 21-20 over North Texas. Deer jumped out of the gates in the first with a floor-high 10 points.

Texas State’s lead and momentum continued to grow in the second quarter over the Mean Green. With 2:15 left before intermission, freshman Kiani Lurry nailed a three-pointer off the back board to put the ‘Cats up seven. On the next possession, Toshua Leavitt hit another Bobcat three to put Texas State up 10 with 1:44 on the clock. The Mean Green would score before the end of the half, but the Bobcats used all of the second quarter to build momentum and drive over North Texas.

Out of the break, North Texas came clawing back by producing an 8-2 run to cut the Texas State lead to two. With 5:26 to play in the third, a lay-up by Bria Frierson tied up the contest for the first time since the first quarter.

Texas State bounced back to go back up six with 2:47 on the clock after a jumper by Deer. Another North Texas run to close out the third had Texas State up one with 10 minutes to play.

With 9:11 left in the game, North Texas regained for the first time since the final seconds of the first quarter. That lead, for North Texas, grew to as many as seven before the Bobcats rallied once again.

A 9-2 run as well as four forced turnovers in just four minutes of play by Texas State gave the Bobcats a push to regain the lead over North Texas. With 1:11 left in regulation, the ball game was tied up at 62-62. With six seconds to play, Deer made her final mark on the contest with a lay-up through traffic to give Texas State the final lead of the day.

North Texas called a timeout to advance the ball, but resilient defense by the Bobcats as well as a forced turnover with time expiring granted Texas State the crucial victory at Strahan Coliseum.

Lurry finished the night with a career-high 10 points and Ericka May led the Bobcats with six rebounds. The ‘Cats shot a season-high 45.5 percent from the floor and finished the game making eight of their 10 shots from the charity stripe.

Iowa State extended its lead to double-digits in the second quarter with a three-pointer by Seanna Johnson. Texas State rallied by going on a 5-0 run of its own, but five unanswered in the closing minutes of the half by Iowa State granted the Cyclones a 13-point halftime lead.

Kaitlin Walla came alive in the third quarter as she started by making the first five points by Texas State. Her first three of the game as well as back-to-back made free throws cut the Cyclone lead to 12. Just over a minute later, another three with 7:02 left in the third by Walla made it a single-digit ball game.

Iowa State retaliated by going on a 10-3 run through the heart of the third to take a 16-point lead over Texas State. Another three by Leavitt cut that lead to 13 heading into the fourth. Walla finished the third quarter with 11 points and the Bobcats and Cyclones tied with 22 points apiece.

Texas State used the entire fourth to try claw back in the contest, but the Iowa State offense and size proved to be too much for the Bobcats as they outscored Texas State 23-14 in the final 10 minutes of play.

The Bobcats made eight three-pointers in the second half while finishing the contest with 12, a season-high and a mark that was just two shy of the school record for three’s in a game. Walla and Ayriel Anderson each finished the game with three, three’s apiece. May led the Bobcats with seven rebounds and Deer recorded three steals.

The Bobcats finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe while Iowa State made 14 trips to the line and converted on 11 of them.

CANCUN, Mexico – The Texas State women’s basketball team fell Friday morning to Idaho by a score of 75-55 at the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. The ‘Cats are now 2-3 on the year and 0-2 at the tournament.

Idaho, the 2012-13 and 2013-14 Western Athletic Conference champions, improve to 4-1 on the year with their only defeat coming against Duke in the opening game of the Cancun Challenge by just six points.

Freshman Toshua Leavitt led the ‘Cats Friday afternoon by scoring a team-high 14 points with four made three’s, marking both the first double-digit game of her career as well as the most three’s she has made in a game this year.

Idaho jumped out of the gates early against the ‘Cats by taking an 18-9 lead after the first. Texas State and Idaho were tied at 4-4 with 6:12 to play in the first before 10 straight points by Idaho put the separation between the squads.

Texas State fought back in the second, especially in the final four minutes before intermission. With Idaho up 11 with 4:09 to play, the Bobcats put together an 11-1 run to come within one of the Vandals at half. The Texas State run was highlighted by a three by freshman Toshua Leavitt as well as a pair of free throws by Ayriel Anderson and baskets from Kiani Lurry and Raven Burns.

Idaho retaliated in the beginning of the third by going on a quick 6-0 run with back-to-back three’s. The Vandals would extend their lead to as many as 13 with 3:21 left in the third and would go into the fourth up 12 over Texas State.

The Vandals continued to build upon their lead in the fourth, despite the efforts of the Bobcats. Ultimately in the fourth, Idaho outscored Texas State 24-16.

Texas State recorded just nine turnovers in the contest while forcing 19 for the Vandals. Kaitlin Walla led the steals effort with three of the team’s 11. The Bobcats shot just 30.4 percent from the floor while making six three’s, four of which belonged to Leavitt. The Texas State bench outscored Idaho 29-13.

GAME FIVE - Idaho 75, Texas State 55 GAME SIX - No. 12 Duke 85, Texas State 34

CANCUN, Mexico – The Texas State women’s basketball team fell in the final game of the Cancun Challenge to No. 12 Duke by a score of 85-34 Saturday afternoon. Duke, a team who made it to the NCAA Sweet 16 just a year ago, is 5-1 this season.

At the conclusion of the tournament, redshirt sophomore guard Kaitlin Walla was named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team. Walla finished the tournament with 28 points as well as 10 rebounds and four steals. Against Idaho, she scored a team-high 14 points, marking a season-high for her.

How It Happened:After Walla drained a three for the first score of the ball game, the No. 12 Blue

Devils built up a 20-point lead in the first quarter of play. The size of Duke, the fourth tallest in school history, proved to be too much to overcome after the early lead was built up.

Texas State continued to battle as the game progressed including improvement on offensive possessions. After 17 turnovers combined in the first two quarters of play, the Bobcats improved by giving up just two in the third and two in the fourth. Duke continued to apply the full-court press until the final moments of play and the Bobcats adjusted to the pressure.

The Bobcats scored 13 points in the third and 10 points in the fourth. Toshua Leavitt came alive for the ‘Cats offensively as she drained three, three-pointers in the game. Leavitt made at least two three’s in every game this tournament including at least three in the last two games.

Whitney Apari, who earned her first collegiate start Saturday afternoon, finished with five points. Leavitt led the Bobcats with nine and Walla also contributed five points. Taeler Deer led the ‘Cats with four steals and the Bobcat defense forced 15 turnovers.

What It Means: Texas State falls to 2-4 on the year as they return home for the I-35 rivalry game

against UTSA next week. The ‘Cats finished 0-3 at the Cancun Challenge, but went up against stiff competition in No. 12 Duke, Idaho, a team that lost to Duke by just six, and Big 12 foe Iowa State.
