A Community of Opportunity

1

After graduating from Loras College in May, Jessica,'12 was weighing options of graduate school, volunteer programs, and a wide variety of jobs. The communications major and media studies minor is interested in pursuing a career in non-profit events or digital media communications. Her interest in events and communications started while working on the marketing team at Fifth Third Bank during her senior year at CTK. Through the Corporate Work Study Program, Jessica also worked at State Bank of Countryside and CME Group.

When evaluating potential first jobs, Jessica saw the opportunity to add to her formidable resume, while also serving as a role model for current students, by joining our Jesuit Volunteer Program. The program allows this proud graduate to return home to the Austin neighborhood, give back to her alma mater, and live in a community with other like-minded CTK Jesuit Volunteers. It also provides a way to grow in faith, especially reflecting on how God works through her and through others. Jessica is gaining valuable professional experience by contributing to CTK’s communications, advancement, and alumni outreach efforts.

“CTK instilled in me the idea of women and men for others. Whether I am taking pictures, driving the work-study vans, or talking to a student in the hallway, I try to live that out each day. I have always had the desire to come back and serve CTK because I appreciate how much the school community has done for me. I am a proof that this school works, and I hope to share my experience with current students and be an advocate for them.”

Aware of the challenges of growing up in the Austin neighborhood, Jessica’s parents worked hard to provide opportunities to keep her and her sister busy and out of trouble. Sending Jessica to a safe, affordable, Jesuit high school was especially appealing to Jessica’s mom.

“Whenever things got tough in school, I would always hear my mother talking about the importance of education and how once you have it, no one can ever take it away. My mom inspires me. She is my rock, and what I have achieved, I owe to her.”

We are inspired by Jessica’s example as a true woman for others and excited to have her at school each day to inspire others to lead lives of faith, service, and meaning.

2CTK 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

Anthony stood in the front of the classroom and powerfully began his speech, “I believe Chicago is dying …” He paused and looked up at his classmates before completing the thought, “…and I am dying with it.”

Our sophomores used the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s march through Chicago’s Marquette Park as the pretense for their assignment, #ourmarch, in which they talked about the need to address some of the complex problems facing our city and country.

Sitting in the classroom listening to the sophomore speeches was a powerful experience. Student after student spoke of the violence that has become seemingly intractable in the streets and communities that surround our school. Students clearly defined the problem and shared how it impacted not only their neighborhood, but many of them personally as well.

As a school community, we seek to challenge and inspire our students to become leaders who do not shy away from the challenges of our times. Assignments like these provide opportunities for them to think critically about their experiences, then chart a course of study and exploration that can lead to action.

Another speech offered hope and reminded me of what we try to accomplish through our mission at CTK. “We are individually capable of great things, but together we can make miracles happen.”

Each day at Christ the King miracles happen.

By cultivating a community where students know they are loved and cared for, they feel safe to try something new, speak the truth that is in their hearts, and challenge themselves to use their God-given gifts and talents to fulfill their potential.

Christ the King truly is a community of opportunity. On the opposite page, you can meet Jessica, ’12, one of our first college graduates, who has chosen to volunteer at CTK as an opportunity to give back and serve as a role model for our students. In the following pages, I encourage you to read about students who are taking advantage of opportunities to succeed in the classroom, learn the language of golf by caddying with the Western Golf Association, and get a head start on their careers. You will also read about Daniel Zundel, a shining example of the committed faculty and staff who treasure the opportunity to journey with our students. Finally, please meet Marcia and Tom Desmond, one of our founding families, whose involvement at CTK is their opportunity to pay forward the gifts they have received.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the many ways you walk with our students and school to make miracles possible. We could not do this important work without your support and partnership.

Sincerely,

4CTK 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

This year, CTK sophomore Cornelus is wearing a special sweater. At an academic ceremony to open the school year, he was honored as a Principal’s Scholar after earning a 3.96 GPA during his freshmen year. This prestigious group of scholars is awarded maroon sweaters with 3 gold stripes on the sleeve that signify their academic excellence.

“At the start of my freshmen year, I saw students awarded the sweater, and I said to myself, ‘I need to get one of those,’ so I was determined to work hard to get one. It feels good to know that I achieved my goal.”

Cornelus attributes his freshmen year success to completing his work on time to the best of his ability, asking his teachers questions, and taking advantage of the Academic Center study space after school. One of his favorite subjects is math. Due to his strength in the subject, Cornelus was placed in an advanced math group. He is a year ahead of his classmates and is on pace to take AP math coursework as a senior.

Principal Temple Payne has been impressed with Cornelus during his first year. “We have a rigorous academic program here. Cornelus came in and got to work right away. He seized the opportunity to challenge himself academically and take advantage of all that we have to offer.”

Cornelus’ strong academic performance opened up other opportunities outside the classroom. Over the summer, he attended the Accounting Career Awareness Program at DePaul University. He actively engaged topics in Business Accounting and Finance by working in groups to examine international business case studies. At the end of the program, he presented in front of his professor using the Excel and Power Point Presentation skills he developed at the Lockton Company, his CTK Corporate Work Study placement.

“I am very interested in all the different types of accounting,” he said. “I hope to attend the program again next summer.”

Cornelus’ parents are extremely proud of his accomplishments and expect him to use the opportunities CTK offers to earn a college scholarship. To achieve his goal, he plans to continue to follow the academic advice he now shares with freshmen:

“Stay on top of everything. Don’t settle for less. You want the grade you deserve!”

Daniel Zundel won’t allow himself to leave until he has finished hand-writing motivational quotes on each senior’s message board. This dedicated faculty member is finishing the final preparations for the Senior Send-Off the following afternoon as part of his new role as our College Counselor and Alumni Coordinator.

“Opportunities where our community can show our alumni how we will continue to support them are very important to the mission of our school and to me, personally. They are just some of the reasons why I feel called to be here.”

Daniel’s call to work at CTK started six years ago during his senior year at Loyola University Chicago. After a long discernment process in which he weighed

many opportunities, he decided on CTK’s Jesuit Volunteer Program – two years of service, spirituality, and simple community living. Daniel was excited by the opportunity to commit to a school serving low-income students and families in Chicago. The many opportunities to serve and grow have kept him here long after his volunteer commitment ended.

In the classroom, this committed educator has motivated students with his infectious energy and passion for teaching AP U.S. History, Civics, College Prep, and Technology. As the Director of our Christian Service Program, he shared his zeal and inspired students to give of their time on countless Saturday mornings, weeklong service immersion trips to Appalachia, and weekends in Washington, D.C., to educate students on advocacy and social justice. All told, our students have completed over 50,000 hours of service since the school’s founding in 2008.

Daniel’s newest role working with juniors and seniors to prepare them for college already feels like another good fit for him. Looking back, he says, “During my six years here, I have developed a good feel for what is going on in our students’ lives, including the daily challenges they face. I hope to use this understanding to better support them as they navigate the college application and selection process.”

We are grateful for talented, dedicated faculty and staff, who like Daniel find great fulfillment in working with families to help our students on their journeys toward college success and beyond.

CTK Offers New Foreign Language: Golf!

Par. Birdie. Divot. Lateral hazard. Drop Zone. These are just a few of the vocabulary words that four of our rising sophomores mastered this summer as part of the Western Gold Association’s Caddie Academy.

For Teniya, '19, who grew up in the Austin neighborhood, these terms were as foreign to her as those found on the pages of her Latin textbook. A talented student, Teniya decided to take a big risk when Assistant Principal, Katie Olson, approached her about participating in the program.

Teniya and three of her CTK classmates were four of only 43 girls selected from around the nation to spend seven weeks living away from home and working as a paid caddie.

These courageous young ladies’ days started early. Teniya and her peers took a 6 a.m. shuttle from their residence at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest to Westmoreland Country Club in Winnetka.

“My first time out as a caddie, I was very nervous. Luckily, the club member I was paired with was very patient and helped me get the hang of it.”

In the evenings and on weekends, the girls experienced living in a residence hall with roommates, eating in a large cafeteria, and taking advantage of the tennis courts and dance studio. They listened to guest speakers who offered advice on health and wellness. With a growing interest in golf, some even took a few golf lessons. Day trips to Navy Pier and Chicago Botanic Gardens rounded out their experience with some outside fun.

“This program was about more than just working as a caddie. It provided opportunities to make connections with people from all over the country and to learn to live on my own.”

Students who complete four summers in the program are eligible to apply for the Chick Evans Scholarship, a full tuition college scholarship awarded based on a strong caddie record, outstanding character, and demonstrated financial need. This fall, 900 Evans Scholars will be enrolled in 19 colleges and universities around the country.

Based on her fulfilling experience, Teniya is excited about the opportunity to be invited back to the program next summer and is motivated to excel in the classroom. She is also excited to stay connected with her new caddie friends and is considering putting those golf lessons to good use as a member of CTK’s Golf Club.

Sophomore Teniya and her fellow caddies at Westmoreland Country Club

“The Caddie Academy represents an amazing opportunity for our young women to be open to growth. The

program challenges them to immerse

themselves in a foreign environment and learn

skills for a lifetime.”

Meet Marcia and Tom Desmond: Champions for CTK

There are many people whose support and tireless advocacy make the mission of CTK possible. We hope sharing examples of champions, like the Desmonds, inspires you to reflect on the reasons you support our school and starts a conversation about the impact you are making in the lives of our students.

Marcia and Tom have been involved with Christ the King since the ground floor – actually since before we had a floor, a building, or even a name. Marcia got to know CTK’s Founding President, Fr. Chris Devron, S.J., in 2007 through shared involvement at Loyola Academy.

The Desmond family’s experience at Loyola Academy prompts Tom to say, “One of the things that

the Jesuits do, and do very well, is education. To be able to bring Jesuit education to a place where it would never otherwise be available inspired us to get involved."

Marcia adds, “We had just become empty nesters after our third daughter graduated from Loyola Academy, and we felt at home at Christ the King with the same Jesuit principles – men and women for others, cura personalis, the same Grad at Grad. Our first impression was one of great hope. You hear so many negative stories about the Austin neighborhood in the news, but coming to the school has opened our eyes and the eyes of the friends that we bring here to many great things happening in the community. What makes us want to stay involved is the investment and sacrifice that parents make to send their kids to CTK, and the students’ courage to be different, wearing a uniform and going to work.”

Tom notes, “We feel it’s important to be involved in CTK because there are families who are simply in need of an opportunity. In the early years, there was no infrastructure and our involvement, along with others, has made, and continues to make, a big impact. There is an

immediate return on investment as the school grows. It’s really tangible.”

“When we have the chance to meet students, feel the confidence in their handshakes and the way they look you in the eye, and sense their excitement and pride in CTK, it reinforces why we do what we can to further the school's mission.”

Marcia and Tom quickly recognized one of the most valuable contributions they could make would be to invite others to learn about the beacon of hope that is Christ the King. They hosted a “friend-raiser” in their home and, from that, Marcia was instrumental in forming the North Shore Circle – an open group of women who believe in our shared mission and are active in a variety of ways to raise awareness about our school and provide resources for our students.

But for Marcia, the work is not done, “The progress that has been made is incredible. Christ the King is not a finished story. There are still so many chapters to be written. We plan to do all that we can to contribute a verse to the great success that is in store for the school and its students!”

“We benefited from Catholic education and

our daughters had a great Jesuit education.

Supporting CTK students is our opportunity to

pay forward this gift, so others can share in this

hope and find success.”

8CTK 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Imagine spending a week full of service and reflection in Chicago. Mornings spent organizing canned goods and sorting clothing donations. Gardening. Learning about local anti-violence efforts. Becoming more aware of global injustice. Afternoons spent dialoguing about service and reflecting on Catholic Social Teaching with a group of high school peers. Welcome to IGNITE!

For a group of Gladiators from Christ the King, this weeklong program was an opportunity to IGNITE their passion for social justice. It was also an opportunity to partner with fellow students from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in a week focused on putting their faith into action.

The CTK team was led by senior Aaliyah. She participated for a second straight year, attracted by the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues and organizations.

Participants volunteered with a food bank, soup kitchen, and gardening program. They also learned about local anti-violence efforts from a group called Ceasefire. Finally, they visited the Artworks Project for Human Rights in Pilsen to view art depicting the disappearance of 43 students in Mexico in 2014.

Following in the tradition of the Jesuits, these “contemplatives in action” spent part of their week reflecting on the service they had just completed. Using the principles of Catholic Social Teaching as a guide, the facilitators provided space for sharing, dialogue, and prayer.

Claire Littlefield, a CTK Jesuit Volunteer, served as one of the program organizers this past summer. In her view the program has both short and long term goals:

“IGNITE is about engaging students in service, action, and reflection. Our hope is that after this week, they will make service a centerpiece of their time at school. Aaliyah has seized that opportunity. I look forward to her participation in other programs we offer, such as the Ignatian Family Teach-In in November and the Jesuit Day of Service in February. Most importantly, I hope she and the other participants will become leaders for social justice in their communities.”

Senior IGNITES Passion For Justice

Junior Thrives at Big Law FirmFor the past three years, Timothy, ‘18, has worked at Winston and Strawn, a global law firm in Chicago’s Loop, through our Corporate Work Study Program. This junior, affectionately known as “T.C.,” is a jack-of-all trades. He works in the supplies department receiving shipments and stocking shelves to support the attorneys and others at the firm. Thanks to his strong work ethic, he also completes projects for the records department, staffs the mail room, and prepares rooms for meetings and events.

“One of the things I enjoy most about working at Winston is all of the people I get to meet and work with. My supervisor, Alberto, is very cool. We get our work done and are able to talk about things going on in my life outside of work.”

Alberto has seen significant growth over the past 3 years. He says, “T.C. has learned how to carry himself in a professional setting. He has improved his communication skills by looking people in the eye and asking questions when needed. As he has gotten more comfortable here, he has become more social and really enjoys meeting and learning from new people.”

One of the people that T.C. has met is attorney Mark Lenihan. Mark, a former Catholic middle school teacher, sees the benefit of professional mentoring. He was so impressed with T.C. that he initiated a monthly lunch so other attorneys would have the opportunity to mentor T.C. and the other CTK students.

“I think having student workers at corporations is important. Beyond developing work skills, this program provides the opportunity for professionals to engage student workers on a regular basis. That is why I started these lunches. I am pleased that T.C. takes advantage of them, and I am glad we have developed a nice relationship.”

Thanks to opportunities like this, CTK students are able to build resumes and networks that will lead them to successful careers. Students work five days each month to earn the majority of the cost of their education. To learn more about the Corporate Work Study Program, please go to www.ctkjesuit.org or see page 10 of this report.

More than 200 civically-engaged businesses of all sizes and industries throughout the Chicago region hire our talented students, who serve as reliable, productive and cost-effective employees. The work study program is shared between Christ the King Jesuit and Cristo Rey

Jesuit High School. Together, these two high schools exclusively serve students and families with limited economic resources in Chicago’s Austin and Pilsen neighborhoods. Through the program, students earn up to 70% of the cost of their education, making the dream of a safe,

affordable, Jesuit, quality college prep education a reality. Our students also gain valuable on-the-job experience in highly professional settings and employers are able to fill a position at a competitive cost with well-trained students, while enhancing diversity and talent pipelines.

MANY OF OUR NON-PROFIT JOBS ARE GENEROUSLY UNDERWRITTEN BY: Big Shoulders Fund, BP, Constellation Brands, The Foglia Family Foundation, Marquette Bank, Wells Fargo

The Adopt-A-Student ProgramMake a direct impact in our students’ lives

as a scholarship benefactor.

You already know that CTK students earn a significant portion of the cost of their education through their jobs in our Corporate Work Study Program. Every family also pays tuition. Still, each student needs approximately $5,000 annually to fully fund his or her education. We are thankful to our generous Adopt-A-Student donors, who bridge the gap between the full cost of a CTK educa-tion, what our students earn at their jobs and what their families can afford to pay in tuition.

As our enrollment grows, our students need your support. Please consider pledging your support today, and help change a student’s life. For more information, please contact Maureen Kelly, Assistant Director of Development, at (773) 413-3513 or [email protected].

“Christ the King has made the biggest difference in my life. School is not always easy, but I know my teachers care about me and want me to succeed. I am thankful for my CWSP job, because I know other kids

my age don’t get to go to work. I’m especially grateful to my Adopt-A-Student sponsor, who makes this experience possible for me. I feel like I

have a whole team of people rooting for me here at CTK!”- Shakira, CTK Class of 2018

CHARTER MEMBERS WANTEDAs a young school serving low-income students, we rely on annual support to fully fund our students’ educations. Your generosity is building a tradition of lasting support and for this we are extremely grateful. As we look to expand our enrollment, we are also looking to identify partners who are interested in ensuring their legacy of support continues to benefit generations of CTK students.

We are aware of several individuals and families who have chosen to include Christ the King in their estate plans, and welcome others to join them as Charter Members of our planned giving society. It can be as easy as naming Christ the King in your will or including us as a beneficiary on an insurance or retirement plan.

If you are interested in learning more, or have already included CTK in your estate plans, please let us know so we can properly recognize and thank you for your generosity. You can check the box on the enclose remittance envelope or contact Steve Holte, VP of Advancement, at 773.413.3509 or [email protected].

Every gift, no matter the size, makes a tremendous impact.
