Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree.

Chris Stambaugh will enter his seventh season as the Direc-tor of Tennis at Chowan University. Stambaugh has 19 years of NCAA DII tennis head coaching experience. In the 2014-2015 season the men's and women's teams went undefeated in regular season CIAA play and finished as CIAA Regular Season Champions and CIAA Regular Sea-son Northern Division Champions, respectively. Both teams also finished as Runner-Up at the CIAA Championship. Stambaugh produced the men's and women's CIAA Player of the Year as well as the men's CIAA Rookie of the Year. Six players earned CIAA All-Conference honors with one player also earning a CIAA Commissioners All-Academic Team honor. Stambaugh was named CIAA Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. The 2013-14 season was one for the record books for both programs. The women earned their first CIAA Champion-ship, clinched the CIAA Northern Division title, and amassed a program-best 23-8 overall record while finishing the year with an unblemished 13-0 record in CIAA play. Stambaugh produced the women's CIAA Player and Rookie of the Year, and five team members earned All-CIAA accolades. On the men’s side, the Hawks finished as CIAA Regular Season Co-Champions and were runner-up at the CIAA Championship. Chowan University stands in the
old Albemarle region of North
Carolina between the Roanoke and
Chowan Rivers in the northeast corner
of the state. The Murfreesboro area
was first settled during the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries, when the
principal inhabitants were several
Indian Tribes such as the Chowanokes.
Today, the stately old homes seem to
whisper of the storied colonial and
antebellum days.
Murfreesboro is located approximately
60 miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120
miles from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Murfreesboro is the location of the
boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,
discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,
and home to Richard Jordan Gatling,
the inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours
and special events are offered
throughout the year by local groups.
