Wake County Public School System’s Early College Program
WCPSS offers four different early college programs – Wake Early College of Health &
Sciences, Wake STEM Early College, Wake Young Men’s & Young Women’s
Leadership Academies and Vernon Malone College and Career Academy. The Wake
Leadership Academies accept applications from students in grades 5-9. WECHS and
Wake STEM accept applications from students in grade 8 -9. VMCCA accepts
applications from students in grades 8-10.
Early College schools help students get a head start on college or a career while
earning their high school diploma. Student take high school and college courses with
many of the college courses transferable to a certificate at Wake Tech or a four-year
program. College courses are taught by college/university faculty at no cost to students
or parents. When students graduate, they will not only have earned college credits but
they will also have a better idea of the career they want to pursue.
Early College Fair – October 17, 2016
9-11am at Vernon Malone College and Career Academy
2016-2017 Early College Application/Selection Information
Early College applicants may completed an application October 15 – December 14, 2015.
The link will be available at wcpss.net beginning on October 16th.
Students must complete an essay and get recommendations from the ELA teacher, the math
teacher and a counselor or school administrator.
Each application is scored against a rubric by staff from both the early college and the
college/university partner. The highest possible score is 100
Applications are scored on prior report card grades, current semester grades, prior EOG/EOC
scores, the essay and recommendations
During the selection process, each applicant is assigned a number randomly and then priority
points are added according to their score on the early college application.
Students not selected for their first choice school are assigned to the wait list for that school
even if they get their second or third choice.
Students selected for an early college will automatically be assigned to that early college. Be
sure to only apply for schools that you are interested in attending.
Students wishing to apply to both an early college and a magnet school may do so without
losing their magnet selection priorities.
o Applications for early colleges will be processed first. If a student is selected for an
early college, their magnet application will NOT be processed.
o If a student is not selected for the early college, they will be assigned to the wait list
for their first choice early college and their magnet application will be processed
using any magnet priorities for which they qualify.
