About UConn at Avery Point

The University of Connecticut Avery Point campus is located on 73 scenic acres at the southernmost point of Groton, Connecticut. Currently, the school has four different four-year majors (American Studies, English, Marine Sciences and Maritime Studies). In addition, many of our students are choosing to major in one of the over one hundred other majors available at UConn and will transition to the main campus to complete their degree after successfully completing a specified number of academic credits here at Avery Point. Students who attend Avery Point have the opportunity to learn in small classes and enjoy the personal attention that our campus provides. We offer hundreds of classes in all academic areas. In the rare event that a student wants to take a class that is not offered at Avery Point, she can take the class on the Storrs campus and remain eligible to play sports at Avery Point.

Avery Point has many of the features students would find at a four-year school. The school has a multi-million dollar Student Center, university Dining Services at Mort’s Cafe, library, 24-hour UConn police unit, the UConn Co-op bookstore, state of the art computer labs, an Academic Center with free tutoring, employment opportunities, an Art Gallery, a large number of student clubs and activities, including a Waterfront Program offering sailing and sea kayaking, and three intercollegiate sports teams (Baseball,

Avery Point Academics

Classes at Avery Point are designed to challenge students. Our students get extra attention because of the small class size, but they will be completing the same coursework as students at the main campus in Storrs. Members of the Women’s Basketball team are required to successfully complete at least four classes each semester. The coaching staff will encourage and support all athletes through academic monitoring and mandatory study hours. Following the successful completion of two years (most majors) on the Avery Point campus, each student-athlete has the opportunity to transition to the main campus in Storrs or to transfer to another four-year institution. The coaching staff believes that all student-athletes are “students first”.

Cost

Currently, full-time Connecticut students pay approximately $5,662 for tuition and fees each semester. Students can expect the total cost for a year on our campus to be extremely affordable in comparison to other colleges and universities, even if they live in an off-campus apartment. There are also numerous opportunities for financial aid, grants, and scholarships. If you would like more information on tuition and fees, contact Joyce Wood at (860) 405-9007 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Student Life

Students at Avery Point enjoy many of the same extracurricular options as students on the Storrs campus, but on a smaller scale. We have a full-time Student Activities Director who coordinates on and off-campus events and all of our students integrate readily into campus life. Many different clubs and activities are available for our students to participate in. We have a full gym, pool and weight room, a newly built Student Center and a thriving Waterfront Program. Avery Point students are also eligible to participate in many extracurricular activities on the Storrs campus however, transportation is not provided.

Off- Campus Housing

Avery Point does not have any on-campus residence halls. We do, however, have many students who take advantage of the housing options off-campus. Off-campus apartments vary in price depending on amenities, size and number of roommates. Area Groton apartment complexes that have leased to Avery Point students in previous years include Country Glen, The Ledges, Groton Towers, Peppertree, Groton Estates, Groton Townhouses. Prospective stu-dents are encouraged to research the available options to find the apartment most suitable for them There is public transportation

available through the city of Groton SEAT bus transit operation. In addition, a more supervised housing option is available through a partnership with nearby Mitchell College where UConn students have the opportunity to live in student housing at Mitchell. For more information regarding housing, please contact Lisa Hastings, Community Outreach Program Coordinator at UConn Avery Point at (860) 405-9262 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Admissions

For the second consecutive year, UConn has secured the No 19th position in the U.S. News & World Report annual collegiate rankings for the nation’s best public universities. One of the reasons for this prestigious award is the quality of students that the university attracts. Admissions criteria will vary depending upon the academic program the student is interested in. Students must apply online at uconn.admissions.edu using the Common Application and must have their SAT or ACT scores sent directly from the College Board to the UConn Admissions Office in Storrs. UConn offers majors and minors in over 100 academic area. To learn details about gaining admission into any program or to arrange a campus visit and tour, please contact the Avery Point Admissions Office at 860-405-9026.

Opponents

We compete in Division III, Region 21 of the NJCAA and play approximately 25 regular season games. Included in our schedule are 20-22 games against teams like CCRI, Dean, Massasoit, and Mass Bay. We play a rigorous schedule to prepare us for the post season and also for the benefit of our players who wish to transfer. Our scrimmages in the past have been against NCAA schools.

Student – Athletes

The coaching staff is always looking to add additional players. Each recruit must be dedicated to the program, herself, and the rigors of academia. Our athletes maintain a course load of at least twelve credits during each semester, participate in an off-season conditioning program, help raise money, and participate in numerous volunteer programs.

Local Community

The 2014-2015 campaign for the UConn-Avery Point was very successful. Due to a

coaching change in the 2013-2014 season that resulted in the lack of a team for that year,

the Pointers started 2014-2015 with only 6 players and finished with 5. Playing only 17

games including two in the Region XXI tournament, the team finished with an overall

record of 11-6, losing twice to Roxbury (who would eventually contend for the national

championship). The Pointers averaged 59 points, 33 rebounds, and 9.5 assists per game.

The team was also honored by several post season awards. Briana Padewski was voted

First Team All-New England Region XXI, Carynn Bartolucci was voted Second Team All-New

England Region XXI, Marissa Moncata was voted Honorable Mention All-New England

Region XXI, and Coach Hardison was voted Coach of the Year All-New England Region XXI.

The hard work and dedication paid off for the program!!

We are reaching out to people interested in becoming sponsors of our program for the 2015-2016 basketball

season. We are looking to take the program to new heights, and are reaching out for your support. We are in

the process of fundraising for the program in order to keep it moving in a very positive direction, and help

provide the kind of student-athlete experience the players can expect from the University of Connecticut, and

that these dedicated, hard working players deserve.

What your donations will do:

Provide team equipment, apparel, and uniforms to the players.

Increased travel budget to allow a stronger game schedule and travel larger radius.

Create greater opportunities for the players to be visible to NCAA programs interested in them.

Increased recruiting budget to allow the staff to continue to recruit high quality student-athletes.

Benefits of being a donor:

An affiliation with the University of Connecticut as a donor/benefactor to the school.

Donations are tax-deductible.

Donations are made to the UConn Foundation, and will directly benefit the basketball program at UCAP.

Recognition in game programs and on all web presence and social media associated with the program.

Please contact Coach Hardison at (860) 625-4968 or via e-mail at [email protected] as soon as
