2015-16 | YEAR-IN-REVIEW

Since joining the NSU athletic staff in the summer of 1998, head golf coach Scott Varner has made a tremendous impact on the RiverHawks golf programs. Varner, the Director of Golf, also serves as the NSU Athletics Strength and Conditioning Coordinator.

The 2016-17 season will be Varner’s 19th at the helm of the NSU programs. He has won five conference coach of the year honors (4 Lone Star Conference, 1 MIAA) and four region coach of the year accolades (2 West, 1 South Central, 1 Central).

The Stillwater native returned to his home state after a brief two-year stint at the University of Louisiana Monroe, an NCAA Division I institution.

Prior to that, Varner led the East Central University golf teams from a fledgling program to a national contender in just a couple of years.

His ECU squads consistently were ranked among the nations best at the NAIA level. Varner was also the defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator on the ECU football team that won the NAIA National Champion-ship in 1993, and his 1995 golf team was a mere three holes from winning the national title. Varner’s programs have always enjoyed tremendous success at

the national level.

The NSU women have made 15 appearances in the NCAA Division II National Tournament in 18 years, making eight finals appearances. They were ranked in the top 25 nationally for the 17th-straight year, most of the time in the top 10. The men have been nationally ranked in the top 25 for 17 straight years and have earned 16 NCAA trips in 18 years, including 12 in a row to the NCAA II Regional Championship.

During his career, Varner has coached 30 All-Americans and 32 Academic All-Americans, six of which were first team choices. An avid advocate of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Varner is the sponsor of the NSU FCA chapter. The legendary Tom Osborn honored Varner in 1995 when he was selected the Southeast Oklahoma FCA Coach of the Year. In 2004, he was named the Oklahoma FCA Coach of the Year and was honored by FCA founder Don McClanen and Coach/Senator Dr. Tom Osborn. He also holds membership in the Golf Coaches Association of America, is a certified strength and conditioning special-ist (C.S.C.S.) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Oklahoma Coaches Association.

A two-time high school golf team champion, an All-State selection in 1979 at Stillwater High School and the State Junior Cham-pions Invitational champion in 1980, Varner was also an All-District selection in football. He lettered in golf at the University of North Texas where he helped the Mean Green to the NCAA Championship Tournament and finished 20th in the nation.

He completed his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Oklahoma State University in 1986 with a conver-sion endorsement in biology, anatomy and physiology. He earned a master’s degree in exercise science from East Central University in 1990.

Varner and his wife Monica Kay have been married for 30 years and have two boys, Michael and Brian. He and his family are members of 1st United Methodist Church in Claremore.

nSU aSSIStantBiosThe 2015-16 campaign was the third for Kyle Fouts as a graduate assistant. He began his coaching career after competing for the NSU men’s golf team for four years.

One of the most decorated players in school history, Fouts played in 40 career tournaments and missed just one event in his illustrious career. He carded more rounds of 70 or better (10) than he did in the 80’s (8), and his career-best finish was a solo fourth at the 2010 MSSU Spring Invitational (71-77=148). He shot a career-best two-round score of 144 (74-70) at the 2012 Dave Falconer Memorial Invitational to finish T-7, and his career-low three-round score of 212 (68-74-70) was carded at the 2013 Bash at the Beach.

His best individual round of 67 came at the 2010 Lone Star Conference Championship (9th, 74-72-67). He recorded 12 career top-10 finishes and was a three-time all-conference performer (2013 All-MIAA, 2011 All-LSC, 2010 All-LSC). He was also named to the 2013 Division II PING All-Central Region team.

Fouts earned a bachelor of science degree in health and human performance from Northeastern State in 2013, and he is currently working toward a masters degree in kinesiology.

The Carrollton, Texas, native competed at Hebron High School, where he won the District 6-5A Championship as a junior and finished runner up as a senior. He was also a two-time first team all-district performer, and he is the son of Doug and Suzanne Fouts.

2015-16 | YEAR-IN-REVIEW

rIVerHaWKS Men’S2015-16 Year-In-Review

Written by NSU Head Coach Scott Varner

This past year was another up and down year for us. We were playing fairly solid through the first three tournaments of the year. We were well positioned to make our 16th NCAA Championship tournament in 18 years until we came a little unraveled in our last three tournaments.

We were regionally ranked yet again and were in the field heading into the conference championship, but we didn’t have our best showing and we got jumped by a team ranked below us that won their conference tournament.

We were very young and inexperienced, so we have to look toward the future. We hosted arguably the biggest and

strongest NCAA Division II men’s event in the Midwestern part of the United States. We put on another great event!

We play one of the toughest schedules in the country that sees us travel to seven different states across the nation. That is a testament to our great tradition, which allows us to be invited to these prestigious events.

We advanced ourselves in the number of quality practice facilities and golf courses that support us. We had a bunch of young men who worked incredibly hard on and off the golf course. I have a very demanding program and the student-athletes gave great effort in both the morning and evening workouts, long practice sessions and qualifying.

We had a very high team grade-point average of 3.47, which was one of the best in our history. We had two All-MIAA performers in Brent and Tate Williamson. Tate was also selected as an All-Region athlete and an Academic All-American. He was the top qualifier for the NCAA Central/Midwest Super Regional Championship, and he represented us well by finishing in 11th place at the event.

We say goodbye to Brent, who has been a member of the team since 2011. He won the first tournament of his career this past fall when he took first place at the MWSU/Holiday Inn Express Invitational. We are surely going to miss him, but we also move ahead with the addition of numerous talented young golfers that I know are going to do their best to bring us back to prominence. We fully expect to be competing for conference and national championships, and I know we have the team that can do that.

I’m looking forward to this upcoming year and seeing the continued dominance this program has grown ac-customed to.

I said at the end of last year that I was excited to see how the team would perform in 2015-16, and they did not dissapoint. We had an amazing season and broke numerous team re-cords, winning plenty of championships along the way. We had numerous accomplishments that included five tournament championships and our first conference title in 10 years. We were also able to win our first MIAA Championship since we joined the league in 2012-13.

We returned to the top 10 in the nation and had an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. We also were honored to have the top-ranked freshman class in all of NCAA Division II. We only finished outside the top three in two events, and those two tournaments featured the strongest fields in the country.

We had a school-record six individual champions, with Baylee Price, Kayla Schroeder and Ebba Moberg all finishing first during the season. Baylee won her second individual MIAA Championship and was rightfully honored as the 2016 MIAA Player of the Year. Kayla did not play during the fall but had an amazing spring, where she went on to win her first tournament title at the NCAA Central Super Regional at even-par 216. She became just the third regional champ in school history.

We were able to boast a league-best four All-MIAA performers (Charter Lawson, Baylee, Ebba Moberg and Kelsey Lumpkin) and three who were named to the WGCA All-Central Region First Team (Charter, Kayla, Bay-lee). Baylee was selected for the first time in her career as a WGCA All-American. Charter, Baylee, Kelsey and Ebba were all named MIAA Athlete of the Week during the year, and we were the only team in the league with more than two honorees.

In the classroom, we had eight named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll (Kayla, Baylee, Kelsey, Ebba, Halie Wright, Fiona Hakanen, Alexis Armon, Kennedy Hudson) and two honored as WGCA Academic All-Americans (Kayla, Baylee). We had one of the highest team GPA’s in school history (3.64) and won the award for the Highest Team GPA at the National Finals.

I could go on and on with the successes we had this year, but overall I am just extremely proud and simply ecstatic over the year we had. It was a great deal of fun and these ladies and my assistant coaches paid the price to earn all of the success we had this past year.

We are sad to lose our two seniors in Kayla and Char-ter, but they leave behind a great legacy of winning. We bring back a group that will be as hungry as ever to get to that next level and compete for a national title in 2016-17.20
