CHARLES COGAN is an associate at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. A graduate of Harvard, then a journalist, and then a military o! cer, he spent 37 years in the Central Intelligence Agency, 23 of them on assignments overseas. From August 1979-August 1984 he was chief of the Near East South Asia Division in the Directorate of Operations. (The Division stretches from Morocco to
Bangladesh). From September 1984-September 1989 he was CIA Chief in Paris. After leaving the CIA, he earned a doctorate in public administration at Harvard, in June 1992. On this trip Cogan will lecture on the history of and the political and cultural dynamics between The Netherlands and Belgium. He will also discuss the current state of the European Union, including the rise of right-wing political parties and the issue of immigration, as well as Europe’s relations with the United States and Russia.

AIRFARE A suggested flight schedule will be offered. Passengers making individual flight arrangements may request private transfers. A $40 fee will be charged per ticket issued. Domestic airfare will be quoted on an individual basis and is payable by credit card only. Frequent flyer mileage cannot be accepted in conjunction with this program.
RESERVATIONS, DEPOSITS & FINAL PAYMENT To reserve your space on this program, a $1,000 deposit is required per person. Reservations are acknowledged in order of receipt until the maximum enrollment has been reached. Your final payment is due 120 days before departure and must be made by check.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be
charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.
CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfare, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change. WEDNESDAY, MAY 6
AMSTERDAM2015 marks the 125th anniversary of Van Gogh’s death and today’s excursion highlights his life and works. Visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which houses the world’s largest collection of his paintings and drawings. Continue through the lush countryside to the Hoge Veluwe National Park and the Kroller Muller Museum with its collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, including a magnificent selection of Van Goghs. The sculpture garden on a spring day will also be a highlight of our visit. Lunch is included during the excursion. Return to Amsterdam where dinner is at leisure.
THURSDAY, MAY 7
AMSTERDAM / BRUGES, BELGIUMDepart Amsterdam for The Hague to view Dutch Masters including Vermeer, at the newly re-opened Mauritshuis Collection. Visit the spectacular 19th-century diorama, the Panorama Mesdag, about which Van Gogh stated, “Panorama Mesdag is the most beautiful sensation of my life. It has just one tiny flaw and that is its flawlessness.” There will be time for lunch on your own in The Hague. Then drive to Rotterdam and view cutting-edge architecture by Renzo Piano, Piet Blom, and Rem Koolhaas. Pass the scenic windmills of Kinderdijk, nineteen perfectly aligned windmills that comprise Holland’s largest grouping. Arrive in Bruges late this afternoon and check into the historic Hotel Dukes’ Palace, former residence of the Burgundian aristocracy. Dinner is at the hotel.
FRIDAY, MAY 8
BRUGESLaced with canals and gardens, Bruges is a medieval gem. A walking tour and canal cruise include the Cathedral of Our Lady with its celebrated Madonna, by Michelangelo and the collections at the Hans Memling Museum, housed in the Hospice of St. John. Following lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Groeninge Museum. The balance of the day is at leisure to explore this enchanting town independently.
SATURDAY, MAY 9
BRUGES / GHENT, BELGIUMAfter breakfast, drive to nearby Ghent to visit the magnificent Cathedral of St. Bavo for a viewing of its greatest treasure, the 15th-century Adoration of the Mystic Lamb (Ghent Altarpiece) by the Van Eyck brothers. Lunch at leisure is followed by free time to explore Ghent’s lively old town which dates from the 11th century, when Ghent was the second largest city in Europe. You may wish to relax on an optional canal cruise. Return to Bruges for dinner at Duc de Bourgogne, overlooking the scenic waterways.

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDSArrive this morning in the art capital of the Netherlands. Transfer to the elegant Art Nouveau-style Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam. In the afternoon enjoy a panoramic tour of Amsterdam on a privately chartered canal cruise. One of the most
beautiful cities in the world, Amsterdam knew its greatest days of glory in the 17th century. This evening, gather for introductory remarks, followed by dinner at the hotel.
MONDAY, MAY 4
AMSTERDAMOn a Rembrandt-themed walk, pass De Doelen, where the artist is said to have painted the Night Watch, and the Rembrandt House where he lived and worked from 1639 to 1658. At the recently renovated Rijksmuseum

a special restropective exhibition, Rembrandt: The Final Years, is the focus of a guided tour. There will be time for lunch on your own in the museum’s café. Continue to the re-installed Stedelijk Museum and view a wide range of art from Cezanne to Appel and on to Baselitz. This evening, a traditional Indonesian rijsttafel dinner is arranged.
TUESDAY, MAY 5
AMSTERDAM / HAARLEM, THE NETHERLANDSA short morning drive takes you to the charming town of Haarlem. Visit the Frans Hals Museum, housing an exceptional collection of works by the artist. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Keukenhof Gardens, where over a million flowering bulbs provide a vast carpet of color. Return to Amsterdam where you may wish to attend an optional concert at the famed Concertgebouw or an evening ballet performance.

BRUGES / AMSTERDAMDepart for Amsterdam today, stopping en route in Antwerp to visit the 17th-century Rubens House and the cathedral, where the painter’s famous Descent from the Cross is on display. After lunch at leisure, continue to Amsterdam. This evening, gather for a festive farewell dinner at a nearby Michelin-starred restaurant.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 6
AMSTERDAM2015 marks the 125th anniversary of Van Gogh’s death and today’s excursion highlights his life and works. Visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which houses the world’s largest collection of his paintings and drawings. Continue through the lush countryside to the Hoge Veluwe National Park and the Kroller Muller Museum with its collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, including a magnificent selection of Van Goghs. The sculpture garden on a spring day will also be a highlight of our visit. Lunch is included during the excursion. Return to Amsterdam where dinner is at leisure.
THURSDAY, MAY 7
AMSTERDAM / BRUGES, BELGIUMDepart Amsterdam for The Hague to view Dutch Masters including Vermeer, at the newly re-opened Mauritshuis Collection. Visit the spectacular 19th-century diorama, the Panorama Mesdag, about which Van Gogh stated, “Panorama Mesdag is the most beautiful sensation of my life. It has just one tiny flaw and that is its flawlessness.” There will be time for lunch on your own in The Hague. Then drive to Rotterdam and view cutting-edge architecture by Renzo Piano, Piet Blom, and Rem Koolhaas. Pass the scenic windmills of Kinderdijk, nineteen perfectly aligned windmills that comprise Holland’s largest grouping. Arrive in Bruges late this afternoon and check into the historic Hotel Dukes’ Palace, former residence of the Burgundian aristocracy. Dinner is at the hotel.
FRIDAY, MAY 8
BRUGESLaced with canals and gardens, Bruges is a medieval gem. A walking tour and canal cruise include the Cathedral of Our Lady with its celebrated Madonna, by Michelangelo and the collections at the Hans Memling Museum, housed in the Hospice of St. John. Following lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Groeninge Museum. The balance of the day is at leisure to explore this enchanting town independently.
SATURDAY, MAY 9
BRUGES / GHENT, BELGIUMAfter breakfast, drive to nearby Ghent to visit the magnificent Cathedral of St. Bavo for a viewing of its greatest treasure, the 15th-century Adoration of the Mystic Lamb (Ghent Altarpiece) by the Van Eyck brothers. Lunch at leisure is followed by free time to explore Ghent’s lively old town which dates from the 11th century, when Ghent was the second largest city in Europe. You may wish to relax on an optional canal cruise. Return to Bruges for dinner at Duc de Bourgogne, overlooking the scenic waterways.

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDSArrive this morning in the art capital of the Netherlands. Transfer to the elegant Art Nouveau-style Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam. In the afternoon enjoy a panoramic tour of Amsterdam on a privately chartered canal cruise. One of the most
beautiful cities in the world, Amsterdam knew its greatest days of glory in the 17th century. This evening, gather for introductory remarks, followed by dinner at the hotel.

a special restropective exhibition, Rembrandt: The Final Years, is the focus of a guided tour. There will be time for lunch on your own in the museum’s café. Continue to the re-installed Stedelijk Museum and view a wide range of art from Cezanne to Appel and on to Baselitz. This evening, a traditional Indonesian rijsttafel dinner is arranged.

AMSTERDAM / HAARLEM, THE NETHERLANDSA short morning drive takes you to the charming town of Haarlem. Visit the Frans Hals Museum, housing an exceptional collection of works by the artist. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Keukenhof Gardens, where over a million flowering bulbs provide a vast carpet of color. Return to Amsterdam where you may wish to attend an optional concert at the famed Concertgebouw or an evening ballet performance.

BRUGES / AMSTERDAMDepart for Amsterdam today, stopping en route in Antwerp to visit the 17th-century Rubens House and the cathedral, where the painter’s famous Descent from the Cross is on display.
