What We Do

Employers throughout Maryland volunteer to provide in-person mock interviews for residents as part of Marian House’s Job Readiness Program.

Marian House is a rehabilitative housing program for homeless women and children located in the Better Waverly neighborhood of Baltimore City.

Marian House I is the intensive rehabilitation phase of our transitional housing program, which provides comfortable, structured community living at our headquarters on Gorsuch Avenue. Central to this first phase of Marian House are the support services we provide, including meals and personal supplies, individual and group therapy, life skills training, job readiness, pre-GED and GED education, referrals for medical care, and a savings program to prepare women for independent living. On average, a woman spends nine months to one year at Marian House I. She is then given the opportunity to move into a more independent living environment in the second phase of our transitional program, Marian House II.

In Marian House II, women live in a more autonomous community setting with other women striving to achieve similar goals for independent, healthy living. The housing in Marian House II

consists of a group living facility adjacent to Blessed Sacrament Parish in the nearby Pen Lucy neighborhood and a row home near our Better Waverly headquarters. In this phase of the program women continue to receive support services such as counseling, case management, education services, and employment assistance as they advance towards achieving their rehabilitation goals.

Marian House III is our permanent housing program for homeless women and families. Marian House III provides rental assistance through government grant funding which ensures that rent payments are affordable for our women. Additionally, women receive case management and access to support services for themselves and their children. Some residents in permanent housing are graduates of the Transitional Housing program. Marian House III houses approximately 75 women/families a year.

MISSION The mission of Marian House is to be a holistic, healing community for women and their children who are in need of housing and support services. We provide a safe, sober, and loving environment that challenges women to respect and love themselves, confront emotional and socio-economic issues, and transition to stable and independent lives.

VISIONMarian House strives to transform our society by unlocking the potential found within the women we serve.

VALUESMarian House values the innate dignity of each human being. Within a culture of respect and understanding of the human condition, the values of patience, trust, honesty, and integrity direct all our interactions and endeavors.

Thank you for contributing to a wonderful 2014-2015 at Marian House! The work of Marian House is deeply human work. We help homeless

women who have suffered from poverty and trauma to overcome tremendous barriers and create a more independent life for themselves and their families. This work is done through strong partnerships among our clients, dedicated staff, and loyal friends.

Partnerships are at the core of all aspects of Marian House. Our origins are in visionary religious and lay women who partnered informally to help women released from jail to rebuild their lives and to give them hope. In 1982, two religious congregations, the Sisters of Mercy and the School Sisters of Notre Dame, partnered to formally found Marian House as a nonprofit organization.

During the past year, we have worked hard to strengthen existing community partnerships and forge new ones along the way. A first step for many is a visit to Marian House during our newly established monthly Thank You Thursday Breakfasts & Tours. These tours are an opportunity for Marian House to thank those who support us and to educate those who want to learn more about us. We understand that strong relationships are the key to a strong program for Marian House women. Together we support the women who come to us disheartened and we celebrate their successes.

On behalf of the women of Marian House, our Board of Directors, and our dedicated staff, we thank YOU, our donors, who financially support us. We thank YOU, the employers who believe in and hire our women. We thank YOU, the corporations and foundations who invest in our work and growth. We thank YOU, the people who volunteer your services and time with us.

Our partnerships enable our women to succeed each and every day! We welcome the opportunity to have you visit with us at Marian House. We can arrange either a private tour, or please join us for our monthly Thank You Thursday Breakfast & Tour held the second Thursday of every month. We are stronger together!

As you look through this year’s annual report, we encourage you to read the highlights of our recent transitional housing program impact study, which can be found on pages 2-3. This study was a labor of love that provides evidence that Marian House prepares women for lifelong success.

With gratitude,

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT FROM

A Study of Impact:The Marian House Transitional Program

Marian House conducted a study of program completers vs. non-completers (2001-2011) to determine factors that influence program completion and success for two years after program exit. Results were obtained through an analysis of internal demographic data and wage record information from the Maryland Department of Labor and Licensing.

THE REPORT DEMONSTRATED:

■ Marian House clients with a

history of incarceration, domestic

violence, chemical addiction, or

sexual assault are just as likely to successfully complete the program as those without these

characteristics.

■ Marian House successfully

prepares women for employment.

Completers are more likely to be employed, compared to

non-completers, and at higher

wages.

For a copy of the full report please visit our website.

Completion of the program assists both those with and without criminal records in attaining employment. (72.6%

of ex-offenders employed at discharge vs.

76.5% of those with no criminal history.)

Employment was maintained at fairly equal rates regardless of education level. (At discharge, employment rates ranged between 77.3% and 70.3%. Eight quarters post exit, employment ranged between 55.4% and 48.2% for these groups.)

Education level affects income. A higher education level did

result in higher earnings for program completers at discharge and throughout the

following eight quarters. Median earnings for completers:

$4,321 $3,949 $3,218

(more than HS diploma) (with HS diploma) (without HS diploma)

While completers with a criminal background start with a lower salary, their salaries increase over time. (Median earnings of ex-

offenders were $4,419 after

8 quarters compared to

$3,325 at exit and compared

to $3,476 for those without

a criminal history after 8

quarters.) $4,419

$3,325

PART ONE

■ A longer stay in the program correlates with a

higher likelihood of

appearing in the

wage records, and

of achieving higher

earnings post discharge.

Donor HighlightsDEMETRIA BOYDAfter a long struggle with drug addiction, Pamela Boyd entered Marian House in 2009. Her addiction negatively affected her daughter Demetria’s childhood and caused a strained relationship between mother and daughter. Pamela did important, life-building work at Marian House. As a result, mother and daughter were able to establish a new relationship and become friends. When Pamela passed away in September 2012, her daughter Demetria decided to honor her mother’s legacy by supporting Marian House and the women working hard to accomplish the same rehabilitation and successes that her mother had achieved.

“Marian House gave me drug-free time with my mom,” she explains. “I want others to know about the life-changing opportunities that Marian House gives to women struggling with addiction.”

For the past two years, Demetria and her family have participated in the Marian House 5K, which is held around the anniversary of her mother’s passing. She gathers a team of family and friends who not only enjoy participating in the 5K, but also fundraise for Marian House. Demetria’s team has raised an impressive $3,200 so far, and that number will surely climb in years to come!

SHEILA FITZGERALDSheila Fitzgerald, PhD, RN, an associate professor at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health first became curious about Marian House after being given the organization’s “30 Women, 30 Stories” book

For the past two years, Demetria and her family have participated in the Marian House 5K, which is held around the anniversary of her mother’s passing. Her team fundraises for Marian House, participates in the race and has collected over $3,200 for the Marian House program.

by a colleague. In November 2013, Sheila came to Marian House to discuss the possibility of volunteering in the Education Center. The conversation resulted in a collaboration to assist us in conducting an independent study of women who completed Marian House’s transitional housing program over a three

year period, and in the analysis of wage records of completers/non-completers from 2001 to 2011. The results of the study (see highlights on pages 2-3) demonstrated that women who completed Marian House’s transitional housing program gained jobs at a higher rate and had higher incomes than those who did not complete the program. Throughout the project, Dr. Fitzgerald’s expertise guided the work with academic rigor. This study resulted in a poster session presented at the American Public Health Association Conference in November, 2015.

When asked what she likes most about being a volunteer, she says “Marian House is a caring, secure environment that allows women to recover from situations that challenge their growth and development. When I work with the women, they are open, happy, and delightful. I want all of them to have the opportunity to achieve success!”

CAROLYN HERB This tribute was written and submitted by Carolyn’s family in honor of her 79th birthday.

Giving of herself is a way of life for Carolyn Herb, a Baltimore City native and devout Catholic. The power of generosity was a lesson that she learned early on as child born to a large family during the Great Depression, and which has helped shape her into the philanthropic woman that she is today. Carolyn is dedicated to her volunteer activities, where most days she is hands-on, helping others. She is also a financial contributor to several local organizations, including Marian House. About 10 years ago Carolyn asked her 5 children to stop giving her gifts on her birthday and major holidays and instead donate to Marian House. Since then, her family has adopted Marian House as their charity of choice, and today are dedicated supporters. Carolyn and her family embrace the mission of Marian House to transform and empower women back to independence.

CORPORATE & COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Ready to ServeWe are grateful to all of those who contribute their gifts of time, talent and treasure each and every year. Marian House is a structured program specifically designed to provide support for women striving to overcome challenging backgrounds. While it takes a very qualified team of staff to implement our program, and very motivated residents willing to work hard for their success, there are several ways that we rely on the support of our community to assist us. From our annual 5K Race to Embrace Independence to the participation in our Job Readiness Mock Interview Days, there are several meaningful ways for the community to become involved in our organization:

In Fiscal Year 2015, Marian House

served 245 people, including

143 women and 102 children.

Volunteers from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and Boy Scouts of America Troop #550 make capital improvements for the Marian House family program playground.

The Founding of Marian House

16 * M A R I A N H O U S E 2015 A N N U A L R E P O R T

In the late 1970s, Sr. Margaret Beatty, a member of the Sisters of Mercy, was serving as chaplain at the Women’s Detention Center in Baltimore City. Observing the many unmet needs of the women being released from the detention center, Sister Margaret joined forces with volunteer Jane Harrison, a long-time advocate for the homeless, to seek funding to start a program to help women being released from jail find secure housing, earn jobs, and receive “sustained encouragement” to help them rebuild their lives.

By 1980, Sr. Josanna Abromaitis, from the School Sisters of Notre Dame, joined forces with Sr. Margaret and Ms. Harrison to build a network of supporters and raise funds with the goal of

establishing a residential program to provide rehabilitative services to homeless women.

These visionary women accomplished this heroic task in 1982 when Marian House opened its doors at the former convent building of St. Bernard’s parish in

Waverly, as a co-sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Mercy and the School Sisters of Notre Dame. To this day, this building serves as the headquarters of Marian House and as a welcoming, loving home to women experiencing homelessness as a result of incarceration or other life challenges. For more than 33 years, Marian House has been a home for women in need of safe, stable housing and a therapeutic community where they can live, work to accomplish their goals, and transform their lives for the better.

“In addition to safe housing after their release, these women need job counseling, training, and sustained encouragement.”
