2015 was another memorable year at Goodwill. After twelve months of amazing work on behalf of staff, program participants, board members and supporters, it’s challenging to capture all of our accomplishments.

Here is a brief list of milestones from last year:• Goodwill employee Steve Hennessey was the recipient of the 2015 Goodwill Industries International Achiever of the Year Award• Enrolled 1,913 people in nine programs; 697 jobs were found by these Goodwill participants• Received a $1.4 million Metro bus transit cleaning contract• Celebrated the 50th anniversary of Goodwill’s Work Experience program• Secured a $600,000 Department of Justice re-entry grant• Celebrated one YouthBuild and two Customer Connect graduations• Raised nearly $1.4 million in funds to support the Goodwill mission, including $71,000 through the OmahaGives! campaign• Hosted the 17th Annual Goodwill Golf Classic, raising a record $140,000

Each of Goodwill’s 597 employees contributed to many achievements throughout the year. Goodwill earned a maximum three-year CARF accreditation, received the Business Excellence Award from the Greater Omaha Chamber and was recognized with an award by the local chapter of the NAACP.

On behalf of Goodwill, we would like to thank you for joining in our mission of changing lives and strengthening the community through education, training and work. None of this would be possible without the dedication of our employees, donors, customers and partners. We thank you for your support and look forward to accomplishing even more in the years to come.

THANKYOUFOR2015

STEVE2015 GOODWILL INDUSTRIES INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR

“I’m here to work. That’s my mission, to work every day.

Work, work, work.”• Steve Hennessey

Page 5: 2015 ANNUAL REPORT - Goodwill Omaha€¦ · 2015 was another memorable year at Goodwill. After twelve months of amazing work on behalf of staff, program participants, board members

Steve Hennessey didn’t have an easy start in life. His father was killed when he was a toddler, and his mother suffered a nervous breakdown. Hennessey was sent to live in a home for people with intellectual disabilities. When he turned 18, he moved to an assisted living facility in Lincoln, Nebraska and started working at Goodwill.

For 36 years, Hennessey has been a custodian at the Robert V. Denney Federal Building in Lincoln through Goodwill Omaha’s AbilityOne program. AbilityOne provides job opportunities to individuals with disabilities in a supportive, team-oriented work environment.

During the week, Hennessey is up at 4:30 a.m. to make the one mile walk to work. Even though he doesn’t need to clock in until 6:00 a.m., he likes arriving early, making a stop along the way at his favorite gas station for a donut and coffee. Hennessey cleans everything at the Denney Building from the bathrooms and daycare to the high-security offices of the FBI and U.S. Marshals.

“My paycheck is important to me so I can pay rent and not live on the street,” Hennessey said. “I don’t want to be on welfare. I want to work a long time.”

This work ethic is one reason Hennessey was named Goodwill Industries International 2015 Achiever of the Year. This award is given to a person who has shown great progress in overcoming employment barriers. Hennessey was recognized at Goodwill’s Delegate Assembly conference in June 2015.

“Challenges to employment don’t exist in Steve’s world,” said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “He demonstrates that meaningful work is something everyone deserves.”

Having a job is an important constant in Hennessey’s life. Goodwill is there to provide support which allows him to live independently and do what he does best…work!

JACOB2015 HOPE ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR

“The Work Experience program helped me get training to have a

job and keep a job.”• Jacob Brown

Page 7: 2015 ANNUAL REPORT - Goodwill Omaha€¦ · 2015 was another memorable year at Goodwill. After twelve months of amazing work on behalf of staff, program participants, board members

The physical demands and fast-paced environment are what Jacob Brown loves most about his job. The 2015 Hope Achiever of the Year works as a production WearHouse associate at the Goodwill Retail Operations Center (ROC) in Omaha.

Prior to becoming a full-time employee at Goodwill, Brown was enrolled in the agency’s Work Experience program, which provides on-the-job training for high school students with special needs. He spent part of his days at school and the remaining time at Goodwill being rotated among a variety of work areas. He received experience in custodial, administration and production areas and graduated from the program with the tools needed for employment. Brown always enjoyed working on the production side of Goodwill. When a position became open in that area, he applied and was immediately hired. Hauling a couch or unloading donations is second nature, and he doesn’t mind the sweat that accompanies it. According to Brown’s supervisor, he’s one of the hardest workers on the floor.

“He’s a powerhouse,” WearHouse Manager Shantel Featherson said. “He brings a lot to the team. Every goal he’s set since I’ve known him, he’s accomplished.”

As Brown started earning his own paychecks, he began to set goals. This determination allowed him to move into his own apartment, pay for his wedding and earn the responsibility of being a key holder at work. Now, he and his wife are saving money for a new house. We are sure Brown will accomplish that goal too.

With Brown’s drive, ambition and the support of his supervisor and coworkers, we have no doubt he’ll continue to achieve and go far at Goodwill.

TIMOTHY2015 MARCO/MEYER ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR

“Goodwill plays a huge part in me being where I

am today. I feel like I can accomplish anything if I put

my mind to it.” • Timothy Cech

Page 9: 2015 ANNUAL REPORT - Goodwill Omaha€¦ · 2015 was another memorable year at Goodwill. After twelve months of amazing work on behalf of staff, program participants, board members

Timothy Cech has worked as a custodian team leader at the Edward Zorinsky Federal Building in Omaha for eight years. Most days, he arrives to work early so he can greet his staff by telling them a few jokes before the workday begins. Cech is responsible for overseeing a variety of job duties performed by his custodial team. He is a very hands-on manager, not only providing supervision, but working right alongside his crew. Cech and his team have a history of passing building inspections with flying colors. These are just a few of the reasons why Cech was named the 2015 Marco/Meyer Achiever of the Year.

The Marco/Meyer Achiever of the Year Award is named after two long-time federal contracts employees who have since passed away, Laura Marco and Rick Meyer. Both individuals were examples of employees who did not let their disabilities stop them from achieving their goals and succeeding in life. Cech mirrors that same drive and ambition.

“Tim has been the definition of team lead,” Goodwill Project Manager Nate Gunter said. “He comes in, and when it’s time to work he gets rolling. He is a good example and is very dependable.”

Cech’s story is even more remarkable due to the fact that he lives with anxiety and is easily overwhelmed by large groups of people. He first noticed his uneasiness in crowded situations when he was in high school. He became distant, isolated and struggled with employment. Cech credits Goodwill for helping him rebuild his self esteem and for embracing his insecurities, for giving him a safe environment where he can be himself.

“Thanks to each of you for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow as a manager. Especially, a big thank you to all the Work Experience

trainers and students who teach me things every single day.” • Holly Schwietz

2015 Annual Employee Awards Dinner

For the past 14 years, Work Experience Manager Holly Schwietz has changed the lives of young people with special needs. She has been a teacher and mentor to thousands of high school students, preparing them for the real world of work. As the manager for Goodwill’s Work Experience program, she is methodical in her efforts to assure each program participant has the opportunity to experience a variety of work settings.

Schwietz works closely with the families, school districts and referring agencies to build a strong support system for every student. She’s made it her mission to prepare these young minds for employment beyond Goodwill.

“I feel honored to be named the 2015 Employee of the Year, and I am grateful to all the people that I work with who made this possible. It’s

fun working with all of you.” • Dick Preston

2015 Annual Employee Awards Dinner

From the minute he clocks in to work at Goodwill’s Retail Operations Center, Dick Preston doesn’t sit still. As a truck driver for the retail division, he’s constantly on-the-go, serving a number of retail stores within the Omaha metro area. He has a strong work ethic, logging late nights and coming in on his days off. He is extremely customer-driven, insuring all deliveries are completed in a timely manner.

Preston states that his favorite part about working at Goodwill is the people. He says no matter where he goes or what stores he serves, there are always people to greet. He might not know everyone’s name, but he remembers their faces.
