Faithfulness to Christ

Member of Lutheran Services in AmericaAffiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in AmericaRecognized by The Lutheran Church - Missouri SynodA United Way Agency

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

From its beginning, Graceworks Lutheran Services has performed its work in response to Jesus Christ and as an extension of Christ’s ministry. Faithfulness to Christ is first and foremost of the six Values that guide and inspire the ministry of Graceworks Lutheran Services. Throughout the pages of this Annual Report, you will read stories of our commitment to the ministry of Jesus Christ. Graceworks employees and volunteers work together to fulfill a vision that took form in 1926 when seven pastors of area congregations filed articles of incorporation creating an entity then known as The Lutheran Inner Mission League of the Miami Valley. The original purpose of The Lutheran Inner Mission League of the Miami Valley was to “encourage works of mercy.” Today, Graceworks employees remain committed to the goal of faithfully caring for people who face challenging and changing circumstances.

The following pages provide stories of interactions among residents, clients, and staff expressing Faithfulness to Christ in ways that demonstrate our first organizational Value. A timeline is interspersed throughout this report to mark significant milestones of our rich history.

Our Faithfulness to Christ has been constant and steadfast. Culture and context change over time, but needs remain the same. In this report, you will meet Dolly, who reaches out on behalf of Graceworks to women in prison as encouraged in Matthew 25. You will encounter Ray and Steve who bring compassion and skill to help older adults continue to live in their homes. You will come across Theresa who, in addition to enjoying a safe and affordable home, has learned at age 60 to read her own Bible with encouragement from Jane and Sheilah.

Just as Christ ministered to the body and soul, Graceworks recognizes the importance of helping others achieve and maintain wellness. You will meet Craig and Alex who helped Peggy, other residents, and staff to improve their health by collectively walking tens of thousands of miles. In Matthew 12, Jesus described a view of family that includes anyone who does the will of God. In the final story of this report, you will read about two brothers with intellectual disabilities, Steven and Mike, who have developed a broader sense of family by relating with two different programs of Graceworks.

Graceworks does not stand alone in our identity and commitment as faithful Christians. We are blessed with many congregations, donors, staff, volunteers, and friends who encourage and support our ministry as a demonstration of their own Faithfulness to Christ. We thank them and recognize many of their commitments through the pages of this Annual Report.

A constitution is adopted on February 26 to facilitate cooperative inner mission work among congregations of the Joint Synod of Ohio (predecessor of the American Lutheran Church). An inner mission committee previously appointed at a mass meeting of Luther Leagues had prepared the constitution.

The Lutheran Inner Mission League of the Miami Valley is incorporated. Its stated purposes are to: (1) stimulate missionary activities and encourage works of mercy; and (2) bring Lutheran congregations together to (a) establish and maintain that inner mission work in Dayton and other places in the Miami Valley is feasible; (b) accumulate funds to establish operations on a larger scale; (c) receive, hold and disburse gifts, bequests and other funds; and (d) own and maintain suitable real estate and buildings.

A New Start: Investing in the Future

Consumer Credit Counseling Service

Dolly and Kamilah

When a woman is released from prison, there is no shortage of challenges she will face in her life on the outside. One of the key components to turning her life around is learning to manage money. Perhaps nobody helps with that transition better than Consumer Credit Counseling Service counselor Dolly. She has worked with CCCS for over a decade and teaches female inmates about money management at Dayton Correctional Institution (DCI). DCI strongly advises all female inmates to complete the course before their release.

“The program is successful because I have the belief that I could have been in jail, too,” admits Dolly. “I am not seen like an authority figure. The women are just learning something that they’ve always wanted to know.”

In both her role as a credit counselor and teacher, Dolly uses a common-sense approach to explaining basic financial concepts. The eight-week course at DCI includes topics such as budgeting, using a checkbook, and how to increase a credit score. The course is specifically designed for inmates who are getting close to release.

“We do a test to get a feel for where each inmate is regarding financial knowledge,” explains Dolly.

She takes extra time explaining paychecks, going over withholding, Social Security tax, and the difference between net and gross pay. To explain budgeting, Dolly uses props like fake money, cut-outs of food, and grocery store sale circulars.

During the winter and spring, in cooperation with other organizations, Lutheran Inner Mission League creates temporary headquarters to respond to Ohio River Valley floods. Over fifteen tons of clothing, food, and furniture are distributed to flood victims. As a result, Lutheran congregations in Indiana and Kentucky begin to support the work of the Inner Mission League.

Excess supplies from flood relief result in the creation of Lutheran Industries, a material assistance program that later included vocational training. This program would evolve into the establishment of Once Around Shop thrift stores in a variety of locations.

Faithfulness to Christ Graceworks Lutheran Services Annual Report 2015 3

“I think Dolly is wonderful. I commend her!” exclaims Kamilah, unit manager for the female inmates at DCI. “Dolly takes pride in what she is doing. The fake money helps them understand the concept of living right and how to budget money.”

Learning to “live right” has its challenges. Dolly’s original lesson plan allowed for just one week for inmates to learn about writing and using checks. That wasn’t enough time.

“For many of the women, they know what a checking account is… but they’ve never dealt with a checkbook,” explains Dolly. “Reconciling a checkbook is very hard for them.”

“Dolly’s program is very effective,” Kamilah continues. “The women love it. She graduates 99% of the female offenders.”

For Dolly, guiding these women helps her stay faithful to Christ.

“Part of our mission as Graceworks employees is to help others experience dignity and wholeness. Jesus Christ helped individuals whom others avoided. I feel this program is the same.”

“Let each of you look

not only to his own

interests, but to the

interests of others.”

Dr. Forrest R. Stoneburner begins his tenure as Superintendent (later Executive Director) and serves for 30 years. In his honor, a Stoneburner Employee Service Award was established in 1981 to recognize employees who complete 10 or more years of service.

Ray, by any measure, has had a fulfilling life. He built a successful career in local television and real estate. But, when it was time to retire, he longed for a second act that was more about mission and less about money. He found that calling by becoming a personal care aide for Graceworks at Home. Graceworks at Home PCA’s typically help with activities of daily life such as meal preparation, dressing, bathing, and laundry. Like many Graceworks at Home employees, he came in with no healthcare experience, but a sincere desire to make lives better.

“I wanted to do something constructive, and I wanted to do something that mattered,” explains Ray. “I’ve been the main caregiver for a man named John… he’s about 97-years-old and he’s bedridden. John was on a ship in World War II that was hit by a kamikaze plane – he tells great stories. What a fascinating job this is.”

Ray finds great satisfaction in sharing experiences with Graceworks volunteers.

Ray has learned to find inner peace and joy while helping others.

“I had to learn about caring for another human being… there is nothing more important,” says

Ray, softly. “When I go home at night, I smile. I feel good. It’s very rewarding.”

Like Ray, Steve is a relatively new personal care aide. After a lengthy

The Lutheran Inner Mission League purchases a 100-acre farm with four houses to develop a home for the aged. The purchase price of $70,000 is borrowed entirely from the Winters National Bank and personally guaranteed by three Lutheran laymen. Lutheran Home for the Aged opens in one of the farmhouses and could accommodate up to 10 residents. Sister Marie Freese becomes matron of the new home.

Lutheran Home for the Aged is renamed Bethany Lutheran Village. The name is chosen for Mary and Martha’s home in Bethany where Jesus received rest and renewal. Bethany Lutheran Village would grow to accommodate more than 800 residents in a variety of settings.

The name of the Lutheran Inner Mission League of the Miami Valley is changed to The Lutheran Social Service of the Miami Valley.

military career, he wanted to do something meaningful in his community.

“Listening to my clients’ stories is fantastic,” says Steve. “I have met some amazing guys through this job. I just feel like I’m making a difference. One of my clients told me that my weekly

visit with him is the highlight of his week.”

For Trish, becoming a personal care aide meant transitioning from education into an entirely new field.

“With my kids getting older… I just didn’t want to get back into education. I wanted to follow my heart,” explains Trish. “Right now I couldn’t be happier just doing what I’m doing. I one-hundred percent feel that I’m giving back with this job.”

“What keeps and attracts employees to Graceworks at Home is the reputation of Graceworks,” explains Robyn Nelson, R.N., Graceworks at Home manager and a 21-year veteran of the organization. “Employees care about quality. We care about staff.”

Ray realizes that it is this kind of care that provides an uplifting second act for both Graceworks at Home clients and their caregivers, too.

The Lutheran Social Service of the Miami Valley becomesa licensed adoption agency. Before ceasing operations in 2009, the agency placed more than 2,100 children with families.

An 11-story residential high-rise building, now known as Vista Place, is completed on the campus of Bethany Lutheran Village.

The Lutheran Social Service of the Miami Valley begins to administer the Consumer Credit Counseling Service debt management program offered by the former Lutheran Community Services of Springfield, Ohio, and then extends the program to Dayton.

“For mine eyes have seen the salvation.”

In a quiet corner of a community room, Theresa reads aloud from the Book of Luke to her tutor. She ends the lengthy passage of the Bible, looks up confidently, and both share the moment of accomplishment. One year ago, 60-year-old Theresa couldn’t read.

Theresa is a resident of Bethel Community, a Graceworks Housing Services community located in Rushville, Indiana. While she has intellectual disabilities, it hasn’t stopped her from learning how to drive a car, use a telephone, cook, get married, or live an otherwise normal life. Normal, except that she could barely read.

Site Manager Jane Starkey realized that Theresa’s challenges limited her ability to fully participate in the Bethel Community.

The first We-Care Homes group home is opened in Cincinnati for individuals with intellectual disabilities. We-Care Homes now serves more than 180 people in a variety of settings throughout southwest Ohio and is known as Graceworks Enhanced Living.

The name of The Lutheran Social Service of the Miami Valley is changed to Lutheran Social Services of the Miami Valley.

“She would become frustrated when I would put notices under the door or sign-up sheets on the community bulletin board and she couldn’t read them,” explains Jane. “But I recognized quickly she did have the ability to learn. She was socializing with neighbors, asking questions, and mimicking their behaviors to fit in.”

Graceworks employees demonstrate Faithfulness to Christ in their everyday interactions with residents. Jane knew that reading would provide the self-sufficiency that Theresa needed to soar. Theresa clearly wanted to learn, but needed proper resources. The best resource in Theresa’s life now is a patient and kind retired schoolteacher who lives nearby – her tutor, Sheilah.

“Her progress is remarkable,” Sheilah explains. “When I started working with her, she knew the alphabet and she could count to 100. But no one had

ever taught her the concept that letters are related to sounds to create words. Theresa picked it up very fast. At Christmas, we got out her Bible and she was able to read the Christmas story from Luke and she cried.”

“I remember kneeling in church next to my mother when I was young and knowing all the verses by heart,” Theresa says. “Now I can really read them. I know she would be proud.”

Since learning to read, Theresa has become noticeably more confident and independent. “When she first moved to Bethel, she called me every five minutes,” notes Theresa’s sister, Brenda. “Now she can go all day without calling me. She comes and goes and does what she wants to do.”

While continuing her reading lessons is her number one goal, Theresa also wants to learn how to handle money, which would afford her even more independence. At age 60, she has a new lease on life and dreams of even bigger accomplishments.

“Someday, I want to earn my GED. With the help of the good Lord, I’ll be able to get it.”

“But as for that in the good soil, these are

the ones who, when they hear the word,

hold it fast in an honest and good heart,

and bear fruit with patient endurance.”

Luke 8:15

News and Highlights

Administrator Earns Board Seat

As Administrator of Graceworks Housing Services, Lisa Berkemeier is ultimately responsible for 18 low-income senior housing properties in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. On any given day, she navigates government regulations, pursues creative non-profit funding opportunities for her organization, and keeps her staff updated on the best practices of their profession. In a field that demands such close scrutiny, it is important that she has the resources to assure her senior residents gain access to the services they need. That’s why she has such a passion for LeadingAge.

LeadingAge is a national association of 6,000 not-for-profit organizations dedicated to making America a better place for older adults. It allows senior care and service providers an opportunity to network, learn, and advocate collectively for the rights of seniors across the nation. Lisa is so passionate about the organization, she chairs the

Housing Committee and sits on the Advocacy Board for the State of Ohio and was recently appointed to the Indiana Board of Directors, class of 2018. As a long-time member of LeadingAge, Lisa has enlisted each of her property managers into the organization as well.

“What LeadingAge does falls right in line with what Graceworks stands for: offering innovative products and services for seniors in a competent and manageable way,” Lisa explains. “I believe this relationship helps put Graceworks out there in the forefront of the best providers.”

Graceworks Enhanced Living Expands Again

Graceworks Enhanced Living routinely evaluates the safety of residents living in older homes, areas where services can be expanded, and ways that the quality of services provided may be improved.

Willowdale home in Montgomery County opened late in 2015, welcoming three women from the Montgomery County Developmental Center. The new home is part of Graceworks’ commitment to assist with the State of Ohio’s planned downsizing of centers that cater to persons with intellectual disabilities.

“We create these settings for growth – strong, safe communities where the people we support and their caregivers can come together to form a positive and nurturing community. As acceptance of community grows, individuals in our care also find that their sense of place, happiness, and peace begins to flourish,” said Deb Lyle, Administrator Graceworks Enhanced Living.

First Manors of the Valley apartment facility (Martin Luther Manor, Dayton) is completed for elderly and disabled residents with limited resources. Manors of the Valley, now known as Graceworks Housing Services, would grow to serve more than 700 people at 18 locations in southwest Ohio, southeast Indiana, and northern Kentucky.

The Homestead apartments for independent living are completed at Bethany Lutheran Village. More than 1,000 persons tour the facility at a July open house preceding a dedication that includes unveiling the “Spiral of Life” sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Stephen Canneto.

Peggy lives in an apartment at Bethany Village and enjoys walking. Last year, she walked 260 miles, essentially the distance from Centerville to Pittsburgh. But what makes Peggy’s story most amazing is not that she logged all those miles, but that she did it using a walker.

“I encourage the residents to walk with a purpose,” explains Craig, Bethany Village exercise physiologist. Craig prides himself on innovative fitness programs and doubling the membership of the resident fitness center. It is his goal to help everyone get a little bit healthier, regardless of age or limitations.

“He very sincerely cares about us,” says Peggy. “I think in every case, Craig is dedicated and really wants people to get better and to benefit from what he can offer.”

While the Bethany Village Fitness Center offers a complete host of exercise equipment geared toward older adults, sometimes the most basic exercise is still the best. To capitalize on the burgeoning interest in fitness on campus, Craig created a summer walking challenge for residents. The challenge lasted five months, beginning early spring and ending at the beginning of fall. Forty residents signed up, including many who do not use the fitness center.

“Sometimes people just like to get out and walk and not

go into a traditional gym because it is a time saver for them,” explains Craig. “You can get up, get out, and walk and still get in a great workout.”

Peggy’s physical limitations prohibit her from working out in the fitness center using traditional gym machines like a treadmill or recumbent bike. But, in the warmer months, she walks around Reflection Lake on Bethany’s campus and through the cottage neighborhoods. In the winter, she walks through the connected buildings of the Bethany campus, getting in important steps without stepping outside. “This is the second year we had the challenge,” explains Peggy. “It made me walk more. I am competitive!” she says, laughing.

Craig and fellow Bethany trainer Alex work to create customized plans for residents interested in improving their health and well-being. Graceworks Lutheran

Bill Serr is named as Executive Director (later President and Chief Executive Officer) of Graceworks Lutheran Services.

Lutheran Social Services of the Miami Valley is chosen as one of five Lutheran social ministry organizations to implement a Senior Companion Program. This was made possible with a grant received through Lutheran Services in America from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Services’ employees also benefit.

“We love looking out the Fitness Center window, and seeing employees walking on their breaks,” says Alex. “The residents and employees encourage each other.” The Bethany Village Human Resources department used Craig’s resident walking challenge as a guide for an employee-driven challenge. That challenge lasted 14 weeks and featured 50 teams. In the end, 38 teams finished the challenge, logging more than 91,000 combined miles, enough to circle the Earth over three times.

Supporting residents to achieve fitness goals and encouraging staff to enhance wellness are ways Graceworks demonstrates Faithfulness to Christ by responding to the call to care for others. This is also testimony to how both the residents and staff are always willing to “go the extra mile.”

“He gives power to the

faint, and strengthens the

powerless. Even youths will

faint and be weary,

and the young will fall

exhausted; but those who

wait for the Lord shall

renew their strength, they

shall mount up with wings

like eagles, they shall run

and not be weary, they shall

walk and not faint.”

A new name for the organization, Lutheran Social Services of Mid-America, takes effect at the beginning of the year. This name is more inclusive of all the communities served by the organization in southwest Ohio, southeast Indiana, and northern Kentucky.

The organization’s new name, Graceworks Lutheran Services, took effect in January 2006 and expresses a motivation to offer works in faithful response to God’s grace. The name captures the organization’s Lutheran heritage and conveys the rich meaning associated with its work.

Graceworks completes a two-year expansion of the Bethany campus, including the Village Center, Courtyard Park, Park Ridge Place, Villas, and the Vista Place exterior replacement.

Bond of Brothers

Graceworks Enhanced Living

Steven and his younger brother Mike share a strong family resemblance. They share a gentle nature and an easy smile. But unlike many brothers, both also share a form of intellectual disability. Now, thanks to a supportive family and a strong bond with Graceworks Lutheran Services, what could have limited the men is instead driving them to achieve.

Over the last 25 years, Steven has been a constant presence in the Bethany Village Linden House kitchen. At the start, he was a student at Belmont High School and learned job skills through what is now known as the Integrated Transition Options Program. His passion soon became a fulfilling occupation, and now he works on the tray line, washes dishes, and helps keep the kitchen clean.

Laurie, Bethany Village dining services manager, has been his supervisor for the past 15 years. She sees the passion and potential in Steven every day.

“He does a great job, and he loves to work,” Laurie says, discussing the energetic 39-year-old. “He will do anything you ask him to do. We are lucky to have him as part of our team.”

“Steven enjoys working at Bethany Village,” agrees his father, Ron. “He enjoys every aspect of his job and is eager to work additional shifts.”

A man of a few words, Steven sums up his experience beautifully.

“Bethany is part of the family!”

It’s the same spirit of family that bonds Steven’s 35-year-old brother, Mike, with the Dayton Day Program, an outreach of Graceworks Enhanced Living.

“It’s an absolute perfect fit for Mike,” explains his mother Barb. “The workers show love and respect

Consumer Credit Counseling Service and the Senior Companion Program move to new offices. CCCS moves into the new Goodwill Easter Seals building on North Main Street in Dayton, creating a strong partnership. Senior Companion also teams up with Goodwill Easter Seals, moving to their Kuntz Road location in Dayton.

for individuals like they should, versus a structured, disciplined response to anything negative that takes place. He’s very happy to go to the Day Program.”

“Our individuals need time with their peers,” explains Dayton Day Program manager Teresa. “Our program differs from others because we are activity-based. We have individuals who have been able to do things that they’ve never done before. Activities like seeing live shows at the Victoria Theatre, going to the movies, or simply going out to lunch each week.”

Teresa explains that the Enhanced Living difference revolves around the philosophy of gentle teaching. That philosophy and the chance to work with adults is what attracted her to Graceworks.

“Mike’s life goal is our gentle teaching motto,” explains Teresa. “The gentle teaching philosophy is to make everyone we serve feel safe and loved and have the ability to communicate their own needs.”

For both Mike and his brother Steven, that’s the family bond that knows no limits.

Teresa and Mike

“...lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been

called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience,

bearing with one another in love, making every effort to
