2015 PATHWAYS ANNUAL REPORT 3

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF PATHWAYS,As we look back over the past year at Pathways, we should reflect on the reasons why we are here. Mental illness can be a devastating disease, striking a person in the prime of their life – usually their early 20’s. Despite the every-day hurdles which our clients bravely face, they continue to amaze and inspire those who work and serve Pathways. Progress for our clients is only possible through the continued generosity of our donors and the incredible hard work of our staff and board who unselfishly offer guidance and caring to our clients. Now is also a perfect time to reflect on what we have accomplished at Pathways for our clients. In 2015, a huge achievement for Pathways was receiving a three year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, known as CARF, International. This certification is like a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. It recognizes our agency as offering the highest quality of services to our clients. This accomplishment was only possible through the work of our outstanding staff. They worked tirelessly for hours and hours, days and days, to satisfy all of the CARF requirements. It was an enormous task. In their conclusion, CARF surveyors stated that our clients were happy and thriving, which is a true reflection of the excellent care given to them by our staff day in and out. We were complimented on our client-centered, caring approach as well as commended for our record keeping, financial procedures and overall business policies. Three cheers to our great staff! Our home at 258 Davis Ave is now fully renovated inside and out. It is a beautiful, comfortable home for eight clients. This was a long road filled with inspections, change orders and typical building issues but finally, with much relief, the clients have moved back into their home. We are so grateful to all of those who helped us to achieve this goal, both financially

and timewise. Several members of our board worked very closely on every step of this project and that participation was integral to the great success we ultimately achieved. We remain grateful for the active involvement of our excellent board members. And, of course, our primary focus is on our clients to whom we are dedicated to serve. We provide safe, affordable and comfortable homes for 38 residents. Our day program located in Cos Cob is our daytime hub for 35 to 40 clients per day. We continue to strive to improve our programming and offer interesting lectures, activities and mind stimulating events as requested by our participants and designed by our staff and wonderful volunteer, Liz Menten. Music and drama have become a large part of our program. Jim Weil, our board president, runs a guitar gang once a week with four to five clients who fill the space with singing and acoustic guitar sounds. Our terrific drama coach, Denise Bessette, from the Hudson Stage Company, holds drama workshops to build confidence and communicaton skills as well as bring out the fun in our clients. Our future plans include the possible renovation of our building at 8 Sinawoy Road. This facility, which houses our day program, operates in only 1700 square feet without a kitchen for cooking or meal prep. Feeding lunch to 35-40 clients each day is a challenge as is finding space to accommodate our growing program base of art, music, drama and other enrichment activities. Pathways is grateful to each of you for your support and caring over this past year and encourages you to continue being a part of our family. It certainly does take a village…

Yours truly,Florence M. Griffin, MBA, LCSWExecutive Director

CLIENT STORIES

MARY

Mary has lived at Pathways since Dec. 2, 1992. Mary was born

and raised in Darien, CT and attended Wheaton College in MA

but had to leave school due to her mental illness. Mary has made a great life for herself in Greenwich. Mary works

at Greenwich Library where she has been employed for the

past 22 years. Mary says, “Pathways has given me my

own apartment. I like my privacy and I can decorate my

apartment anyway that I want.” She continues to say,

“I love to walk around town and I have to because I

do not have a car. Everything is walking distance

from my apartment.” Several years ago Mary went

through a bout of breast cancer. Mary went on

to say, “Pathways staff really care a lot about

me. When I was sick and needed help to get to

my chemo and radiation treatments, they were

there. And they were also there to talk with me

and help me to feel that I was going to be OK”.

Mary has also said that having breast cancer was

easier than having a mental illness which is a very

profound statement showing how brave all of our

clients are each and every day.

2015 PATHWAYS ANNUAL REPORT 5

Michael was born and raised in Greenwich. He attended

Brunswick High School in Greenwich where he played

football and was second in the state of CT for wrestling.

He then graduated from the University of Colorado. After moving

around many times due to his mental illness, Mike has found a home at

Pathways where he has lived since 2010. He said, “Pathways has given

me a chance to have structure in my day to day life. I have a very lovely

home with a comfortable environment to pursue my interests such as

guitar and basketball tracking on the internet”.

Mike loves to walk and the location of his Pathways home makes this

easy to do. Mike is a member of the YMCA through our scholarship

program where he walks to almost daily and uses their fitness

equipment. In the past, Mike worked as a personnel trainer and recently

worked for Wernert Construction as a maintenance worker. He is now

looking for work with his Pathways vocational counselor. Mike has re-found

his love of music through his acoustic guitar. “The guitar is something that I

look forward to… I play acoustic guitar in my room and it is so calming to me.

I also look forward to the guitar gang every week at the Fellowship Program”.

Mike feels very lucky to have Pathways in his life and he continues to strive for

a better life with the help of Pathways. “I am so grateful to Pathways every day

for helping me through the years”.
