Thank you for joining us at the EastWest Institute’s Annual Awards Dinner and celebrating our 35th anniversary. I am delighted to welcome the institute’s new CEO and President, Ambassador

Cameron Munter.

The world today presents a complex array of challenges. From China to Russia, the future of Iran after the nuclear deal and the rise of ISIS, to Afghanistan after the NATO drawdown, seemingly insurmountable issues abound. As a former diplomat who worked at the highest levels in Pakistan, Iraq, Serbia and other critical countries, Cameron is the right person to lead EWI forward into our next chapter. Cameron will initiate fresh approaches to conflict reduction and prevention in the 21st century, where problems are no longer solved by representatives of states alone. Under his leadership, the institute will anticipate issues and address them in unique and innovative ways, drawing on its reputation for independence, building trust, recasting issues and taking action.

In recognition of what EWI stands for, we are also honored to present the John Edwin Mroz Global Statesman Award—recognizing an individual who exemplifies trust-building and is a catalyst for change—to Martti Ahtisaari, Former President of Finland, 2008 Nobel Laureate, and an EWI Board Member. President Ahtisaari has dedicated his life to conflict reduction and international mediation in crisis areas, whether as a senior Finnish public servant and President or in an international capacity, often connected to the United Nations.

The EastWest Institute is looking forward to making a difference together in the world over the next 35 years. Thanks for all that you do to help pursue our mission. I know that we can count on your continued support.

Ross Perot, Jr.Chairman, EastWest Institute

The EastWest Institute has established the John Edwin Mroz Global Statesman Award in memory of our late founder, president and chief executive officer.

As an enlightened young man, John imagined himself becomingan instrument of global change. He made his dream a reality, dedicating his life to reducing conflict and making the world a safer and better place. He succeeded by building trust where none existed.

With his vision, enormous energy and creativity, he brought diverse global leaders together who would not otherwise have met. Listening without bias or judgment, he enabled them to converse and make progress toward solving the world’s most intractable problems.

This award recognizes people who share John’s vision of a peaceful world, who work passionately to achieve it and who embody his values as a trust-builder.
