“The Philippines is defined by its emerald rice fields, teeming

megacities, graffiti-splashed jeepneys, smoldering volcanoes,

bug- eyed tarsiers, fuzzy water buffalo and smiling, happy- go-

lucky people.” Lonely Planet Guide

Spend three weeks discovering the real Philippines.

On the island of Leyte, a one hour flight southeast of Manila, a community development project has been established just outside the capital city of Tacloban. At the very heart of the program volunteers are needed to help staff at the local community centre based in a housing project outside Tacloban. The centre is the lifeblood of the community and provides vital support for the local people. Many locals rely on its resources, and generous volunteers, for help in supporting and bringing up their families.

Course Community Development in Tacloban City

Date Nov 28 – Dec 19th, 2015 Contact Laura Burge: 03 9479 1072 [email protected] Website www.cisaustralia.com.au To Apply Contact Laura Burge or CIS Information Sessions: Bendigo Campus: Nancy Long Dining Hall. 6.30pm - Wednesday, 11th March Bundoora Campus: Menzies Conference Ctr. 5pm - Thursday 12th March

The Project If you’re a dynamic and adaptable person who enjoys engaging in a wide variety of tasks you will definitely find this project rewarding. Day to day, volunteers can partake in an array of activities which include, but are not limited to;

Develop and offer social welfare services for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds

Teaching and / or teacher assistance at a local school - teaching English

Assist with community nutritional programs

Assist with a local micro-financing project for low income mothers

Provide assistance with supplementary feeding for malnourished pre-school children

Assist with community centre projects – help build local community centres so the local people have a place to gather and shelter in floods and poor weather conditions

Assist with community housing projects You will be closely supervised by the very friendly team of local staff.

Why The Project Needs You CISaustralia is looking for volunteers to help provide shelter, livelihood, healthcare and educational assistance to more than 250 families in up-to nine separate communities. Foreign volunteers play an essential role in passing on their specialist skills to 100+ children who use the community centre every single day. The centre really is the lifeblood of the community and it has the potential to organise many community based projects, but unfortunately they just don’t have enough staff to supervise them all. If you have special academic skills or play an instrument you can help with the further education of children in the community.

Your Role As a volunteer you’ll get have the opportunity to help organise after-school workshops, activities and tutorials for young children. You can also help with the formation and development of community projects for adults that in turn play an important role in the lives of many local families. Volunteers are also needed to help prepare and serve healthy meals in the feeding program and support the community centre staff to delivery resources to the homes of families in the community development projects. The ability to show patience, compassion and understanding is crucial when working with people from a different culture to yours. Having the ability to work autonomously is also important as you may find there are times where you have to improvise and work independently.

The Project The amazing team at a Primate Rescue Centre in Vietnam is dedicated to the protection of endangered primates - those fun, cute, cheeky, little creatures that we all love. The Centre carries out the work of rehabilitation, breeding, research, conservation and habitat protection for primates. Once upon a time, Vietnam was once completely covered in forest. Sadly only about 10% of those forests remain today. A population of 86+ million people with approximately 225 people per square kilometers has taken its toll. The Centre was originally set up with the aim of caring for endangered (and critically endangered) primates, many of whom were confiscated from illegal trade after the introduction of the Vietnam Primate Conservation Program. Today the Centre is home to 140+ primates from 15 species. Several endangered species of the Langur primate family are kept at the Centre - they can’t be found at any other facility in the world! The overarching objective of the Centre is to establish stable populations of highly endangered primate species in captivity so they can be part of repopulation, reintroduction and release programs.

Why The Project Needs You The Centre acts as a rescue facility for primates that have been confiscated from illegal trade and also works to breed the primates to bolster the populations of endangered species. The combination of poaching and the illegal trade of primates has led to the decimation of many species’, that is why the breading program at the Centre is important, and in fact essential. So far 9 species have been successfully bred at the Centre, with a total of more than 50 infants born! Staff often have to travel thousands of kilometers to collect rescued primates. This places undue pressure on already over-strained and very limited resources. That is where you come in. Your assistance will be greatly welcomed to help with the day to day running of the Centre. You’ll be playing a vital role in helping to facilitate the incredible work that the Centre staff are achieving in primate protection and conservation.

Your Role One of the major areas of focus is ensuring the primates habitat so they can enjoy a reasonably engaging and enjoyable life in captivity. To facilitate this you will be involved in environmental enrichment. This will include the preparation of meals for the animals and jazzing up their enclosures with new. Volunteers are needed to assist the staff in a number of day-to-day tasks. Some of these tasks include: Refurbishing enclosures and parts of the Centre, maintaining garden, cleaning enclosure, assisting keepers in husbandry activities, cleaning windows of the reptile holding facilities, enclosure maintenance such as digging, removing branches and planting vegetation.

One of the major areas of focus is ensuring the primates habitat

so they can enjoy a reasonably engaging and enjoyable life in

captivity. To facilitate this you will be involved in environmental

enrichment.

Accommodation and Meals Your placement is located in a small / remote village. It is 2-3 hours from Hanoi. During your volunteer placement you will stay in shared rooms in a local guesthouse (basic, clean and safe). The town is small and has limited restaurants. There is a small market. All meals and transportation when on-site will be at your own expense.

Program Dates Nov 29th to Dec 19th 2015 (3 weeks)

Working Hours Monday to Friday 7am to 4.30pm (with some early mornings) and a 2 hour lunch break

Program Fee A$2,825 (very limited places available)

Fitness Level Required Medium to high (there is a 20-30min walk each way / each day to and from the Centre – or a short bike ride). The temperature is usually warm and humid. Support All students will spend their first night in Hanoi, which is included in the program fee – and undertake an on-site orientation / city tour. On site staff will assist with general questions and those related to excursion opportunities. This program is a relatively independent experience and suited to most students – however, more suited to those who have travelled previously and who can travel, live and work independently.

This project provides an experience that is truly unique, in Nepal. Nepal is one of the best countries in the world for scenery, wildlife and adventure. The Project Located 35km from the capital city of Kathmandu (1.30 hour drive), the project team manages a women's farm cooperative, which also provides English Classes to local children in the mornings and a medical clinic, as the surrounding village is a considerable hike from the nearest town. Nepal is famous for its captivating mountain views and the location of the farm project is ideal for enjoying these. It is also perfectly situated, in the “hills” for going on hikes in the surrounding area. The Kathmandu house, where you stay before going to the farm, provides you with some time to experience the hustle and bustle of Nepal’s major city. Why The Project Needs You Almost 85% of Nepalese residents work as rural farmers. During your placement you will be living on the farm, and contributing to the daily functions, maintenance and improvement of the environment. Through this project, you have the privilege to work alongside these inspirational young women and learn about the realities of gender roles in Nepal, while being part of a truly progressive project within its culture. As a volunteer you’ll not only have the opportunity to assist on the farm, but also teach English to children You could be supporting the local school teachers, to enhance their lessons.

Your Role There are three key areas of focus and the role you play in this project will depend on the focus area you choose. If you enjoy working on the land you can get involved with a number of projects on the farm. This will involve hands-on agricultural labour. If education or child and adolescent development is of greater interest, volunteering in the rural school houses would be an experience that can’t go undervalued. Those who are vested in gaining writing experience at an international level, can reach out to engage with one of the local NGO’s.

The Community Centre aims to provide a caring home for orphans who have lost one or both parents. Relatives are often too poor to be able to take care of them. The government managed Centre also cares for elderly people who have been abandoned by their families. As a native English speaker your skills and capabilities will be incredibly beneficial. The time you give as a volunteer will not only provide short term care but it will also have long term benefits.

Course English Teaching and Childcare in a Community Centre in Vietnam

Date Nov 29 – Dec 19, 2015 & Jan 3 – 23, 2016 Contact Laura Burge: 03 9479 1072 [email protected] Website www.cisaustralia.com.au Information Sessions: Bendigo Campus: Nancy Long Dining Hall. 6.30pm - Wednesday, 11th March Bundoora Campus: Menzies Conference Ctr. 5pm - Thursday 12th March

The Project As a volunteer and a native English speaker your skills and capabilities will be incredibly beneficial to the children. Thanks to the improved level of English amongst the children attending volunteer classes, in 2010 three students were awarded a scholarship to join a hospitality program (the program trains disadvantaged children for jobs with the world’s top international hotels). The time you give as a volunteer will not only provide short term care but it will also have long term benefits. Can you think of anything more rewarding? The ages and number of children change regularly, there are normally around 45 children at the Centre at any one time. Ages can range from a few months old to 18 years old, usually the children are 6 - 18 years old. There may also be elderly people and people with mental illness at the Centre.

Why The Project Needs You Vietnam has a population of 86+ million people and it is astounding to note that over 40% of the population live on less than $2 per day! So although it has progressed in leaps and bounds over the past 10+ years there is still no escaping the daily struggle to survive. Often over 200 orphans and elderly are being looked after at any one time. They cannot always be given the care and attention they require unless volunteers, just like you, give up their time to help out. Local staff are able to manage the basics such as food, accommodation and general duties but that extra attention which brings quality to life is unable to be provided. This is where you come in… you can provide a personal and caring touch whether it’s helping children with English, homework or organising activities such as sports, dance and singing. Or you can pull up a chair and play a game of cards with the elderly, every little thing you do will count.

Your Role The project is located in a rural area, 1.5 hours outside Hanoi. The area and local village relatively quiet and facilities are basic. There is the opportunity to visit Hanoi on weekends (at your own cost). Transport between your project and guesthouse is not included. Some students choose to ride a bike each day. The ride takes between 20-30 minutes depending on how fast you cycle! Others choose to share a cheap taxi each day with fellow volunteers. Volunteers are predominantly needed to run English classes with the children, the majority of children are 6 to 18 years old. This will give the children a chance to improve their spoken and written language skills. As a volunteer you’ll be assigned to a classroom often for the full duration of your involvement in the project.

You can provide a personal and caring touch whether it’s helping

children with English, homework or organising activities such as

sports, dance and singing.

Accommodation and Meals During the project, accommodation will be provided on a twin share basis in a local guest house. You will have your own bed, desk and chair. The guest house has air-conditioning, TV, hot water and free internet in the lobby. Meals are not included in the accommodation. There is a small grocery store with some basic foods and plenty of local restaurants – so you can enjoy some great local Vietnamese food.

Program Dates Nov 29th to Dec 19th 2015 (3 weeks) Jan 3rd to Jan 23rd 2016 (3 weeks)

Working Hours Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm

Program Fee A$2,625 (very limited places available)

On site staff will assist with general questions and those related to excursion opportunities. The Project As a volunteer and a native English speaker your skills and capabilities will be incredibly beneficial to the children. The time you give as a volunteer will not only provide short term care but it will also have long term benefits. The ages and number of children fluctuate, however, there are normally around 200 students at the school and child care facility. All students wishing to attend this program must complete an Federal Police Check prior to departure (A$42 – not included in the program fee). There is a stick code of conduct when it comes to dealing with the children and this will be detailed as part of your pre-departure and on arrival at your orientation. Students will be asked to focus on teaching English to the older children or assisting the young children in the Kindergarten. However, all students will eventually rotate and have an experience at both teaching English and assisting at the child care centre. All students will assist in community development activities at the local village – distributing water supplies and much needed second hand clothing. Students will also rotate at the computer station and assist children to learn basic but valuable computer / IT literacy skills. No specific IT skills are required. The focus is assisting children become familiar with a computer, building confidence with technology and basic activities like learning how to control / utilize a mouse.

Why The Project Needs You Cambodia has a population of 15+ million people, it is the 69 most populated country in the world. The people are peaceful and caring, with 95% being practicing Buddhists. One of the largest challenges facing Cambodia is still the fact that the older population often lacks education, particularly in the countryside, which suffers from a lack of basic infrastructure. Local staff need assistance in delivering basic education and child minding support services – to ultimately improve the opportunities and lives of young Khmer children and families. Students will provide a personal and caring touch whether it’s helping children with English, homework or organising other educational activities.

Your Role The project is located in a rural area, approx. 1 hour’s drive outside of Phnom Penh. The area and local village is relatively quiet and facilities are basic. The time you give as a volunteer will not only provide short term

care but it will also have long term benefits. All students will

assist in community development activities at the local village.

Accommodation is approx. 1 hour drive away from the project. Accommodation is clean, safe and comfortable and includes twin beds (2 students per room), TV, A/C, hot water, a fridge (some rooms / not all), towel, sheets, blankets, pillow. Breakfast is included daily as is lunch (except weekends). Evening meals and lunch on weekends are at the students own expense. Daily transport to and from the project is included.

The region boasts inspiring natural beauty, rugged cliffs and dense green bushland – it’s also known as the Wild Coast, which is fitting considering that you’ll be working with some of the wildest creatures on the planet. The game reserve’s core focus is on wildlife and conservation.
