MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

LESLEY HITCHENS

DEANUTS LAW SCHOOL

The Summer Clerkship Guide, produced with much hard work by the UTS Law Students’ Society (LSS), is a great resource. It will give you information about the firms, the process, and tips about how to go about preparing an application. You can also read about the experiences of former summer clerks. Importantly, the Guide will also provide you with information about the proper procedures to be followed. You should make sure that your applications follow the requirements of the scheme and of the firms to which you are applying. If you are not sure about your plans, then the Guide will still be useful in providing you with information about the type of firms involved and the experience of working in these practices. If you are unsure, it would be good to read the Summer Clerkship Guide alongside the Careers Guide, another valuable resource produced by the UTS LSS, which will give you an insight into the broader range of careers available to a law graduate. I know from my conversations with law firms that UTS:Law students are well regarded. However, the clerkship program is highly competitive and there will be many more applicants than places. But don’t be daunted by the level of competition. If you think this is the type of practice that interests you, then put in an application. Just be realistic. Even if you are not successful in obtaining a clerkship, the experience can still be valuable. Preparing your application can help you to identify your strengths and to refine how you present relevant information about yourself. But, make sure you do your research about the firms you are applying for and you examine your own reasons for choosing to apply to the firm. Interviews provide useful practice and experience. They will give

you an idea of what is expected of a law interview and a chance for you to see how you manage the interview. Take time after the interview to reflect on it: what went well and what could have been improved. Use the tips in this guide as an aid for that reflection (as well as a guide to preparing for the interview). But don’t be too hard on yourself; we can all look back on interviews and wish we had said something differently! So whether or not you decide to participate in the program, and whether or not you are successful, the clerkship period can assist you to think about the type of career you want and improve your application and interviewing skills. And for those of you who are successful in obtaining a clerkship, the experience will also offer you the chance to consider whether this is the career path for you.

The clerkship process can be quite an intense experience, and may seem even more so given the competition for positions and current media reporting about the graduate employment market. However, this needs to be kept in perspective. The clerkship program and the firms involved in the program represent only a very small share of the career and employment opportunities for law graduates. There are many other career opportunities, but you need to seek them out.

So, if you think, a summer clerkship is for you, go ahead and apply. Enjoy the experience: learn from it and keep it in perspective. And finally, good luck with the process!

Best wishes.

WHAT IS A CLERKSHIP?

TOP FIVE TIPS FOR SUMMER CLERKS

Clerkships are internships offered by participating law firms to students, to provide them with legal experience in different practice areas within the firm. Generally, the clerkships are held over the summer break and students in their penultimate year are eligible to apply. The programs can run anywhere between 3-10 weeks, depending on the firm.

The 2015 NSW Summer Clerkship Program is co-ordinated by the Law Society of NSW (NSWLS) with each participating law firm running its own application process. More information about the clerkship program, dates and contact details for each firm’s representatives can be found at the NSWLS website.

The clerkship program provides an invaluable opportunity to obtain an insight into the legal profession and commercial law, helping you to make an informed career decision. Many of the firms also use the program as a recruitment process for their graduate lawyers, and often offer summer clerks graduate positions at the conclusion of their clerkships.

The clerkship process is very competitive, with recent trends showing that firms may only offer between 2-20 clerkships to students in Sydney, depending on the size of the firm. This has prompted some students to seek clerkships interstate, typically in Melbourne. It is therefore vital that students approach the application process in a prepared and efficient manner. Further, students must remember that, in the event they do not obtain a clerkship, there are a number of other opportunities available in order to gain experience. These include unpaid internships at Community Legal Centres or other public interest organisations and paid or unpaid work experience at other small or mid-tier law firms.

While so much energy is put into the application process, for those that obtain a clerkship the journey is only just the beginning! After canvassing professional advice offered from some of the top law firms, these are the tips that stood out:

1. Make a great first impression, and maintain it!Displaying a positive attitude and always being willing to assist and learn will contribute to your colleagues having a great first impression of you. This impression is also informed by your demeanour and presentation, so it is also vital that you adhere to the company dress code and maintain an orderly appearance.

2. Seek feedbackWhile many clerkship programs provide performance reviews, it is wise to seek feedback on the projects you complete and your performance in general. This will allow you to determine if you are on track or perhaps whether you need to alter your approach in order to develop your professional and legal skills.

3. Follow firm rules and proceduresWhile seemingly obvious, it is imperative that you show up on time, avoid sending personal emails and listen to instructions to avoid any mishaps from occurring.

4. Always act professionallySummer clerkship programs may also involve a calendar of social events that aim to familiarise the clerks with the firm’s culture and staff. No matter how casual the event may be, or how quickly the alcohol flows, it is important to always uphold a professional demeanour. When it comes down to it, you don’t want to sacrifice a potential graduate position for the sake of an extra wine or two!

5. Get to know everyoneA friendly smile can go a long way. Building rapport with colleagues, including mentors, lawyers, staff and fellow clerks, is an important step in getting the most out of your clerkship experience.

PREPARING YOUR APPLICATIONIn 2015, applications for the Summer Clerkship Program open on Wednesday, 17 June and close on Sunday, 19 July at 11:59pm. Clerkship applications typically involve a cover letter, CV and academic transcript. However, some firms may have additional written questions that you will need to answer. Before you start writing, visit the clerkship page on the firm websites to confirm what you will need to prepare and submit for each firm. You should allow yourself as much time as possible to prepare your CV and to draft a well-written cover letter that is tailored to the firm you are applying to, addresses the firm’s selection criteria and promotes your capabilities.

The UTS LSS also hosts a number of informative sessions before and during the clerkship application process. These include the Clerkship Seminar Series, the Clerkship Networking Evening and various Skills Workshops. These events are designed to provide you with the information and resources to help you confidently draft applications and network effectively. You are encouraged to take notes during the Seminar Series and the Skills Workshops and to ask the clerks, graduates, recruiters or lawyers in attendance any questions that you may have. The Clerkship Networking Evening on 28 May 2015 also provides you with an opportunity to network with representatives from each of the sponsoring firms in a more relaxed environment.

Golden Rule: organise your time and stay on top of application dates and requirements.

PUT IT IN WRITINGYour written application is the first step towards a summer clerkship. Each firm will consider on average between 500 and 1000 applications, so it is really important to distinguish yourself. The best way to make your application stand out is to be yourself and to use the cover letter to explain why you would like to work at that firm. For example, you could refer to the firm’s culture, its reputation in particular practice areas, its pro bono work and its specific graduate program. You should also outline what you can bring to the role as a summer clerk. The firm’s website will give you an idea of what the firm is looking for in its summer clerks which you should use to frame the information in your cover letter.

Use your networks and talk to people who have been through the application process to get a better idea about how you should approach your applications. However, remember that

it should be an honest reflection of your own experiences and passion for commercial law, so use the application as a way to let the firm get to know you. Ask other people to proof read your cover letter and CV to make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors and that the wording makes sense.

Golden Rule: do your research, tailor your application to the firm you are applying to and include your own interests and experience.

TALKING THE TALK: NETWORKING AND INTERVIEWSAll firms participating in the application process will host cocktail evenings throughout the application process. Use these events to network with as many people as possible; ask questions about the clerkship process and what it’s like to work at the firm. Networking can be nerve-wracking but try to relax, enjoy the canapés and make the most of it. Remember that in the short time you have at networking events to make a good first impression, you want to be at your best. Keep your appearance neat and your conduct professional.

After firms have considered all applications, they will invite candidates to a first round interview. The interviews are a chance for the firm to see if you are a right fit for the firm, and give you the chance to decide which firm you would most like to join if made an offer. Generally, firms will provide the name(s) of interviewer(s) so have a look at their profiles on the firm’s website and prepare some thoughtful questions to ask. The interview process is incredibly competitive but stay positive and be confident in your own abilities.

Golden Rule: keep it professional.

One of the most rewarding parts of the clerkship application process is meeting new people and learning more about the employment opportunities available in law after graduation. Regardless of the outcome, there is a lot to learn in the clerkship application process. The application process is undoubtedly stressful at times, but well worth it for students who are passionate about a career in commercial law. Visit the UTS LSS website and Facebook page to remain updated about all clerkship events.

Good luck!

Sage was a summer clerk in 2014-2015.

1. The competition is going to be high and you need to impress. Maybe you could benefit from a little support. You’ll be happy to know that there’s plenty of that on hand right here on-campus. Useful resources, designed to provide you with career management skills have been italicised throughout the article and there’s no better time to start accessing these than now!

2. Soooo many Clerkships; soooo little time. You’re thinking it would be wise to narrow down your options, and target a few rather than many. How do you decide? It’s all about identifying the firms that you feel most excited about. Spend time reading and gathering information about each firm and the particular Clerkship they have on offer. Their mission statements and values are a good place to start. By targeting your, you will be more likely to write quality application documents and impress at networking events and interviews. (Useful resources: Law firm websites; This Guide)

3. Study; work; extracurricular activities; and oh! ... Now you need to apply for clerkships too! Would a plan of action be a good idea? Having a plan of action is the perfect solution for a busy student like yourself to keep your head well above water. By creating a plan of action you will: a. Make it easier on yourself to make progressb. Take small steps which will lead to big gainsCreate clearly defined SMART goals (you’ve probably heard of this before) - Specific; Measurable: Attractive: Realistic; Time-framed. This way, you’ll be more likely to carry out your identified actions and it will be easier to monitor your progress. (Useful resources: UTS: Careers– Careers Consultation)

4. LSS clerkship events are coming up soon. You’re raring to go and keen to chat with firm representatives, but you’re wondering what they’re actually looking for. At any face-to-face event, representatives are expecting you to ask intelligent, well-informed questions and be able to converse utilising your interpersonal skills. However, students in the past have been known to ask less than impressive broad questions such as ‘can you tell me about your firm?’ Their wish is for you to dig deeper than this by doing your homework on the firm and then asking well-crafted, questions. Representatives would also like to be able to hear evidence of your drive, commitment and industry knowledge as well as be able to gauge how self-aware, confident and motivated you are. Opportunities for you to demonstrate

UTS: CAREERSCLERKSHIP APPLICATIONSSHEONAIGH RENNIE

these attributes will present themselves through networking events; firm presentations (through the Clerkship Seminar Series); skills workshops and cocktail evenings. For each firm you’ve decided to apply for, identify and practice speaking out loud the following information:• 3 things that impress you about the firm; • 3 things that are important to the firm. E.g. stakeholders; causes etc;• 3 strengths you have;• 3 experiences you’ve had through work experience or intra/extracurricular activities in which you have demonstrated some of the attributes above• 3 ways in which you’d like to contribute to the firm given the opportunity; • 3 specific questions you would like to ask a representativeArmed with this information, you will have the edge on other candidates and your questions and conversations will be perceived as professional. Just what you want!(Useful resources: Law firm websites; This Guide; UTS: Careers - Careers Consultation, Mock Interview, InterviewStream online tool)

5. There will be a lot of people at those events. You’re curious about how representatives will really get to know you. You want to stand out from the crowd. Through the great line-up of LSS events, there are plenty of opportunities for you to interact with representatives, however, many students will be vying for their attention and it might be a challenge to get enough quality time to really show them your personality. Setting yourself apart by finding additional opportunities to connect is a fantastic strategy. Here are some other avenues for you to consider:a. LinkedIn connections and relevant groupsb. Events or activities run through the Faculty of Law or Professional Associations c. Family members or friends who works at Law firms of interestConduct a little of your own research. Professionals often attend various events such as conferences, charity events, speaker presentations, networking opportunities. You never know what might happen if you bump into one of them and have a chat. Being proactive like this, is what we call being open to planned happenstance. It’s amazing how often ‘chance’ plays a critical role in peoples careers. (Useful resources: LinkedIn; Faculty of Law website; Professional Association websites; Friends and family; UTS: Careers – Careers Consultation)

So you’re excited about the prospect of applying for a Clerkship and want to put your best self forward. Here are some tips to help you do just that.

Page 12: 2015 Clerkship Guide

12

6. You want to take your cover letters and resumes from good to great. The university has the perfect solution to this. UTS: Careers created their Group and Individual Resume Review sessions to help student job seekers to create application documents that will put a smile on the face of any hiring manager. They also have a comprehensive website with cover letter and resume samples you can download. By accessing these services you will learn how to create documents that will: a. Capture the attention of the reader.b. Be visually appealing and easy for the reader to read.c. Demonstrate your enthusiasm and your fit/match for the role .You can spend hours…if not days sitting staring at your computer screen struggling to craft documents that are good enough to make it into the ‘yes’ pile. Or you can let UTS: Careers help. To get you started, here are two critical tips: 1. Focus on what you can contribute to the organisation rather than what you desire to take away from the Clerkship experience.2. Use their words and business jargon. Reflect the tone of language that they use on their website and in any other documentation you can find.Once you’re happy with your documents, submit your cover letter, resume, and academic transcript via CV Mail or the firm website.(Useful resources: UTS: Careers– Group Resume Review, Individual Resume Reviews, website)

7. You’ve been invited to an interview and/or a cocktail evening. Eeeek! You’ve got the jitters! The pressure is on and your mind may be racing with all sorts of questions – ‘What will they ask me?’ ‘What if I go blank? Thankfully, the university has got your back for this one as well. The Counselling Service created their ‘Staying Afloat as a Law Student’ workshop to help current students to stay resilient under pressure. They also offer a ‘Mindfulness Meditation’ workshop which was created to help students to embrace a willingness to be with what life brings up, whether it is easy or difficult. In addition, the UTS Careers Consultant (Business

& Law) offers Individual Career Consultations, focusing on mock interviews to help Law students to gain more confidence in sharing their value with potential employers. And last but certainly not least, UTS: Careers also offers an online tool - InterviewStream, which is offered to help students to become better at speaking about themselves and their achievements. You can access this anytime, anywhere via CareerHub. (Useful resources: UTS: Careers – Mock Interview, InterviewStream online tool, website; Counselling Service – Workshops, Individual Counselling, Self Help Guides via website)

8. An offer may be on the way! What should you expect? Students may only accept one summer Clerkship position in one firm. So sit back and relax. You’ve done all that you can do. And if an offer comes through, it’s time to celebrate and give yourself a nice big reward! If you aren’t offered a position, make sure you seek out support and honour your emotions of disappointment and loss. You put in a lot of energy into this process which can be long and frustrating and unfortunately due to the large number of applicants and limited number of positions, only a very small percentage of students are offered a Clerkship opportunity. Try to bring yourself back into a positive mind-set. Throughout this process you would’ve learnt invaluable career management skills and you are now more equipped for your future. There are loads of other fantastic opportunities for Law students and graduates and if you’re not sure where to next, UTS: Careers can help. (Useful resources: UTS: Careers – Careers Consultation; Counselling Service – Workshops, Individual Counselling; LinkedIn Alumni Tool)

Wishing you all the best of luck! Sheonaigh Rennie – UTS Careers Consultant (Business & Law), UTS: Careers.

COMMERCIAL AWARENESSOLIVIA FISHER

The sky is blue, the sun rises and commercial awareness is a vital graduate attribute for law students. All are statements you likely accept as true. But peer behind the lexical magic and what you find may enlighten you. An understanding of ‘commercial awareness’ makes for a dynamic contribution to your recruitment arsenal.

So what exactly should you know about commercial awareness? At first blush, it is knowledge about a business and the business conditions in which it is embedded. What industries are in its purview? Who are its competitors? Consider the services upon which the business makes its crust, and the key competencies, people and transactions involved.

Responding to these questions may prompt insight into how the business operates so as to generate profit and achieve objectives. Interpersonally, consider how this would influence the company’s way of bringing in business, treating clients and marketing its services. At a macro level, this could indicate how a business takes advantage of market conditions or strategises M&As. Businesses, including the one for which you interview, are impacted by external happenings. It is easy to understand why commercial awareness entails a sound grasp on world events and major economic and financial trends.

This is why you will find commercial awareness paired up with instructions to scour publications such as the Australian Financial Review or the business pages of other newspapers. Journals, bank reports, magazines such as the Economist and industry-specific publications in the way of Lawyers Weekly will serve you well if you need to brush up on your worldliness on the morning of an interview. They will serve you even more handsomely if you make their perusal a habit, borne out of a genuine interest to get a lay of the commercial land.

This effect will not merely take hold because you have, over time, digested lots of information. It is rather through advancing your ability to connect trends and predict what

will occupy your firm and clients. Authentic knowledge of the backstory to dealings will equip you to think on your feet, reason opinions and solve problems. It will engender confidence when delivering solutions and fixing on an appropriate manner when advising clients. Commercial awareness is more than the accumulation of static knowledge. It is a process.

Apart from sprinting to the newsagent, where does this leave you? Employers seek proof of your interest in gaining expertise and your flexibility to do just that. In an interview situation, this does not mean reciting industry news. It may involve demonstrating ability to break down embedded issues and explain them clearly.

Moreover, commercial awareness is about being innovative. If you have worked in hospitality, you likely have inklings about how businesses operate, sell products and build relationships with customers. Take stock of your experiences. Your jobs and extra-curricular activities may be sources of knowledge.

Finally, commercial awareness is about looking ahead. Interest in sport could provide a portal for your accessing interest in commercial life. Consider how you can tailor the buzzword to you. After all, commercial awareness is there to help you be the functional face of a business.

Andrew Williams

My clerkship at Ashurst was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences I’ve had. The program itself consisted of a week induction, two practice group rotations and a one week client secondment, as well as a heap of social activities.

During the induction week, we were introduced to every facet of Ashurst and given the opportunity to really understand how an international corporate law firm works. The week was extremely refreshing as it reinforced the down to earth and genuine culture of Ashurst – a welcome reality compared to the rigid and conservative environment I imagined to be a part of most law firms before starting my clerkship.

My first rotation was in Infrastructure, where I got to work on some of Australia’s biggest transactions, including the WestConnex project and Sydney Light Rail. This work primarily consisted of reviewing and drafting contracts and assisting with contractual close. The thing that stood out to me the most, was the level of support within the group. This meant that, despite the complexity of the work, every lawyer who gave me a task took the time to ensure I understood exactly what was required and provided regular feedback.

My second rotation in Restructuring and Insolvency offered a good mix of litigious and advisory work. The highlight of this rotation was the exposure I got to the firm’s clients, both in and out of the office. I had the opportunity to attend numerous client functions, including whiskey tasting and

trampoline dodgeball. I was also given real work for real clients, such as attending client conferences and drafting subsequent letters of advice or preparing research memos for counsel submissions.

My one week client secondment was spent at Fortune 500 company, Genworth Financial. During my time at Genworth I assisted in-house counsel in drafting contracts, analysing compliance requirements and drafting legal advice. The secondment was a great opportunity to see the workings of a major corporate client and its in-house counsel.

The clerkship, however, was not just about working 9-5. Far from it. Inter-firm events such as weekly sport, trivia and cruise, along with the end of clerkship lunch, Ashurst Christmas party and monthly firm drinks, provided plenty of opportunities to relax and socialise. As a result, not only was the clerkship a lot more enjoyable, I developed invaluable friendships with the other summer clerks and lawyers throughout the firm.

Overall, I honestly cannot explain how good my clerkship at Ashurst was – at least not in such a short amount of space. The work I did, the people I met and the experiences I had were amazing. The clerkship gave me the best introduction possible to what it was like to work at an international corporate law firm, and at the end of it I really couldn’t wait to start as a graduate.

Possibility in everything

What a student can expect from an Allens clerkship – Dana Rechtman, Lawyer.

Before completing my clerkship at Allens, clerkships were a mystery to me. I had heard whispers around law school about cocktail nights, the dreaded interviews and students giving up part of their precious (three-month long!) university holidays. However, I had not heard all that much about all the benefits that come with completing a seasonal clerkship. Having completed a clerkship at Allens, I would like to give an overview of why it is an invaluable experience and why you should really consider this option as you head towards the end of your law degrees. A seasonal clerkship really is a great way of finding out what working in a commercial law firm is all about.

One of the best things about the clerkship was how welcoming people were and how willing they were to give open and honest opinions about their day-to-day lives at Allens. This was evidenced in the organised event ‘Confessions of a Law Grad’, in which a panel of graduates answered our many and varied questions on their experiences entering into the workforce. They were also more than willing to take us out for coffee to talk more about their personal experiences and to chat about the transition from university to full-time work. It was really great that people were so friendly, that I could relate to so many people who had been in my position and that they really understood why the questions that we were asking were so important to us.

This welcoming attitude was also evident throughout other areas of the firm. Working on matters for different lawyers not only exposed me to the type of work that I would be doing at Allens but also demonstrated the approachable nature of the lawyers. Importantly, I really felt that people had time for me. The lawyers I worked with made a real effort to ensure that the work that they gave me was interesting and they were always willing to give me feedback. They also allowed me to sit in on client meetings and attend court so that I could get a real experience of life in a large commercial law firm.

Another great thing about the clerkship was the exposure we had to different practice groups and different areas within the firm. Even better, this was achieved through wine and cheese nights, where we effectively went speed dating with members of the different practice groups with wine and cheese provided! These evenings were great – they were very informative and really gave usan insight into the different areas within the firm. We also had interesting and eye-opening seminars on the really amazing work that Allens does in the community sphere, including in the areas of pro bono and reconciliation, and we were also invited to attend the special interest group meetings.

If I could leave you with one message, it would be to take up all the opportunities offered to you during the clerkship. Be it putting your hand up to help out on a pro bono matter, attending ice cream runs organised by the grads (that really happened!) or going to a lunchtime talk put on by the Women at Allens committee, the more you get involved and the more people you meet and speak with really enables you to see what your experience later down the track could be at Allens and whether this is the path that you want to take to begin your career. For me, the clerkship awakened me to all the wonderful things that were on offer at a firm like Allens and the insights that I gained made it clear that Allens was a place that I wanted to be.

Allen & Overy Summer Clerks 2014/15

We were all assigned a buddy in our practice group and were able to get involved in interesting tasks, including preparing memos, attending client meetings and conference calls, registering leases and attending court. In addition to our rotations, we were given the opportunity to research and complete a Mock Pitch to a client on a potential acquisition. We also divided into groups and completed a Mock Transaction, with teams representing the buyer, seller and the financier in the deal. Both exercises were a great learning experience and the lawyers at Allen & Overy were always happy to answer any questions we had along the way.

Throughout the clerkship we were able to enjoy a number of sporting and social events. We started our first day at Allen & Overy with a welcome breakfast, attended multiple Christmas parties and functions including barefoot bowls, the firm-wide Christmas Party and Friday night drinks. All of these events were a fantastic way to socialise with colleagues. We were also encouraged to get involved in a variety of sporting and recreational activities at Allen & Overy, including weekly Pilates classes, personal training sessions, netball and indoor soccer. Additionally, there were various inter-firm clerkship activities such as weekly inter-firm sports matches at Rushcutters Bay, the trivia night hosted at Jones Bay Wharf and the clerkship harbour cruise.

We were also given the opportunity to visit an office in the Asia Pacific region during the clerkship, which was one of the many highlights of our time at Allen & Overy. Collectively we represented the Sydney clerk group in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo.

The opportunity to visit another office as a summer clerk exceeded our expectations. For some of the clerks this represented a third rotation as we were sitting in a team which we hadn’t worked with in Sydney. We were able to gain an insight into the work conducted in the Asian offices and met the teams in the respective offices. The experience helped us understand what it is like working within Allen & Overy’s global network, including the opportunities you are given at a truly global law firm.

We were all drawn to Allen & Overy for a variety of reasons. Allen & Overy is one of the only truly integrated, global law firms in Australia. Many of us were particularly excited to have the opportunity to work on multi-jurisdictional matters with colleagues from offices around the world. Further, the potential to work abroad and travel was something that not only appealed to us in regards to spending a week in an Asian office during the summer clerkship, but also in the longer term as there are many opportunities to undertake secondments to overseas offices.

Throughout the interview process we were able to get a sense of the culture and working environment at Allen & Overy. The range of nationalities and personalities in the offices ensures that Allen & Overy is a dynamic and fun team to be a part of. However, the size of the Sydney office ensures that people know one another on a personal level and work as a close-knit team. We believe this is what makes the working environment particularly unique at Allen & Overy.

Six of us were fortunate enough to participate in the Allen & Overy Summer Clerkship Program in 2014-2015. We completed two rotations in the Sydney office in a variety of areas, such as Tax, Corporate, International Capital Markets, Public Mergers & Acquisitions, Litigation, Competition and Banking & Finance.

AREAS OF PRACTICEThe firm works through three main operating divisions:

• Corporate, Finance & Tax (Energy & Resources, Corporate Advisory, Banking & Finance and Taxation)

• Property & Development (Property & Infrastructure, Environment & Planning and Construction)

• Litigation and Workplace Relations (Litigation, Workplace Relations, Intellectual Property, Technology & Competition)

Our clients compete globally and Corrs provides the legal services they need to do that effectively, no matter where they are. Our lawyers work across practice areas and geographic boundaries to drive commercial outcomes in multiple jurisdictions.

We also have a global network of the world’s best independent firms who work with us to provide the most relevant specialist expertise where and when it’s needed. With 50 firms in 20 countries, we have an extraordinary range of talent at our disposal.

Our independence means we’re not locked into one legal service provider. We connect with the best lawyers internationally to meet our clients’ specific needs.

INTERNATIONAL SECONDMENTSOur lawyers strengthen our global network and their own careers by participating in the firm’s leading secondment and scholarship programs. We invest in unique international experiences to help our lawyers grow their skills, cultural understanding and relationships worldwide.

Between 10 and 20 lawyers spend between three and 12 months working in one of our global network law firms each year. Overseas secondments are available to Corrs graduates even before they start their legal careers with us. We offer our future graduates the opportunity to live and work in Tokyo for 12 months before joining our graduate development program. Japanese language skills not required!

Corrs has partnered with Japanese corporate law firm Anderson Mori & Tomotsune (AM&T) to offer its Foreign Legal Trainee (FLT) Program to our future graduates. You will live and work in Tokyo and have the opportunity to further develop your legal skills while working overseas.

WHAT ARE WE WORKING ON?We are excited to work with some of the biggest organisations in the world on their most important matters.

Our clients include more than half the top fifty ASX listed companies, some of the largest privately owned companies in Australia and a number of global Fortune five hundred companies like Johnson & Johnson, General Electric, Wesfarmers, Microsoft, BP and Pfizer.

We work with well-known organisations like Vodafone Hutchison, ANZ, AMCOR, BG Group, Mirvac, Woolworths and Carlton United Breweries, mining giants like BP, Woodside and Fortescue Metal Group and leaders in finance like NAB, and CBA. We also work with governments, Federal and State, on significant matters including the $43b National Broadband Network Project.

We were Australian counsel for US talent agency William Morris, which represents stars like Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey, when it acquired 49 percent of industry-leading global creative agency, Droga5.

WHO ARE WE AND WHAT SETS US APART FROM OTHER FIRMS?Corrs Chambers Westgarth is a premium independent law firm. We emphasise the independent part because it’s important to who we are and how we work. Independence isn’t just a description of our position in the market, it also describes how we think, our innovative style and bold decision-making.

Our vision as a world class law firm is to drive Australia’s competitiveness and economic engagement with Asia. We are based in Australia and operate internationally, wherever our clients need our services.

With 1000 employees, 550 lawyers and 125 partners, we have the scale that allows us to take on the largest and most challenging matters for major organisations internationally. As well as be the right size for a culture of inclusion.

Corrs is a firm that thinks strategically, not just in its legal work, but also for the firm’s future and the success of its people. Corrs is known for its clear vision and ability to develop and implement strategy, as well as its lawyers’ ability to help clients achieve their business goals.

Corrs’ culture of performance excellence drives this achievement and can be seen in our mentoring, coaching and comprehensive learning and development programs, both formal and informal. We draw on the best expertise in Corrs’ own lawyers as well as external specialists to make sure our people never stop learning.

The combination of these factors creates a firm that celebrates its independence, is open to new ideas, has the courage to think and act differently from the rest of the market, and thrives on new challenges and opportunities. Our people thrive on this, too. We call it the inspiring workplace.

Page 27: 2015 Clerkship Guide

WHAT WEARE LOOKING FORIN AN EMPLOYEE?Corrs is a place that celebrates individuals. We’re looking for spirited, determined graduates who think big and like doing things a little differently. In exchange for your energy and commitment we’ll provide extraordinary learning and work opportunities here and on an international stage.

We don’t look for a Corrs ‘type’ when we interview potential graduates. Corrs people are individuals, but they do share some traits.

Because this is a high performance organisation, Corrs people are good at what they do. They are able to work in a team and bring out the best in the people around them. They want to achieve the best results for the client as well as the firm and they take pride in their work and achievements. Corrs people like to find new ways of doing things and aren’t afraid to be independent and bold in their actions.

This is a firm with a sense of purpose, so we’ll probably look for that in you, too.

PRO BONO, VOLUNTEER & COMMUNITY ACTIVITIESHelping others is a key aspect of the culture at Corrs and can be seen every day in every office at Corrs. It happens in three ways – through pro bono legal work, volunteering and philanthropy.

Corrs provides pro bono legal services for disadvantaged individuals who might not otherwise have access to legal representation through the conduct of nine legal clinics and referred public interest matters. Pro Bono is one of the graduate program rotations, so graduates are involved early in their time at Corrs. In Sydney, two graduates spend half a day each week for six months at the Redfern and Inner City Legal Centres.

HOW DOES THE FIRM ENCOURAGE WORK-LIFE BALANCE? It’s not all about work! At Corrs we encourage staff to be active and participate in social and sporting events as well as learning & development activities.

Some of our activities include yoga, touch football, cricket day, Friday night drinks, family days, trivia nights, End of Financial Year party and Christmas Party. Corrs also provides flexible work arrangements, paid study leave, salary sacrificing and opportunities to give back to the community.

Choosing your law firm is as important as your choice to be a lawyer. It will determine the calibre of people around you, the quality of work you do, what kind of training you’ll get and how much responsibility you’ll be given. All of which adds up to the rate at which you learn and the level of satisfaction you feel in your job.

The Corrs Seasonal Clerkship Program is a great opportunity for you to experience the people, clients, work and culture that differentiates Corrs from other law firms.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with some of Australia’s leading lawyers on high-profile work for major Australian and international clients across all industries. You’ll soon discover the standards of quality and commitment to clients required to succeed at this level.

You’ll be exposed to a broad range of interesting matters. You may also conduct research, review and present documents, as well as attend client meetings, mediations and settlements. The variety is enormous, so it’s the perfect way to discover the firm and the area of law that excites you most.

CLERKSHIPPROGRAM

Achieving our goals as a world class law firm requires people with vision, ambition, courage and commitment. We have a workplace that is engaging and truly inspiring, and what we consider to be the most innovative, progressive and supportive people development program in the industry.

Our commitment to developing world class lawyers starts at day one. Our Graduate Development Program lays this foundation by providing rich, on the job training with a greater opportunity to work directly with partners and senior lawyers; structured learning; mentoring; and regular feedback.

Supervised by partners, you will complete three six month rotations through a variety of practice areas. You are mentored by senior lawyers and your development is overseen by a dedicated Learning & Development and Human Resources team who work with partners to provide you with guidance and ensuring your success.

The program begins with a residential orientation that brings graduates together from around the country in a major city location. Apart from training that enables you to hit the ground running, this four day event delivers professional relationships and friendships that last your years at Corrs and beyond.

Starting as a clerk at G+T felt like starting the first few weeks of the rest of my career. I witnessed the way the firm operates, and I was able to meet all the lawyers in the two areas I want to practise in. The experience gave me an eye-opening understanding of life in the corporate world and the scale of operations in large firms.

Clerkships are different to other internships and work experience in that you become one of the team. I was put on equal footing with other team members. Rather than feeling like I was getting in the way, I felt like I was a valued part of a team and contributing to the great work they were producing.

Most of the interesting work I have been given involves researching niche areas of law.

G+T is known for being progressive and innovative in tackling legal problems, so they are constantly dealing with grey areas. It’s particularly rewarding when the research you’ve done is passed directly to the client without major changes.

Lloyd Wood, 2014 Sydney Summer Clerk

Clerking at G+T exposed me to how the legal industry operates in a top-tier commercial environment, teaching me practical skills that fall outside the scope of my law degree. I really valued being asked to do tasks for junior and senior lawyers alike. Especially if a task was complicated, I appreciated that a lawyer had chosen to reach out to me to assist them, making me feel like a part of the team and teaching me valuable practical skills. I did not expect to be asked

to draft a contract that was sent to a client, so I was thrilled when I was, but admittedly also nervous! The chance gave me an insight into future work as a junior lawyer.

I really enjoyed the events the firm facilitated to allow the clerks to get to know each another. The initial experience of getting acquainted then paved the way for social events we initiated after inter-firm clerk sport, at lunchtimes or in the evening. The experience of developing friendships with like-minded, motivated and fun individuals who also happened to be colleagues made me look forward to coming to work.

The quality of our people is the key to our success. Recruiting the right people at every level is therefore a critical part of our strategy. Our summer clerks become part of the HDY team and contribute to our growth and culture from day one. So, they must be:

Why should you apply for our program?

We understand what you are looking for in a summer clerk program. We listen to what our summer clerks tell us about their experience with us and how we can build on it each year. This means we know what’s most important to you and our program delivers this for you:

■ Exposure to high quality, meaningful work.

■ The opportunity to contribute and take on responsibility as part of a team.

■ A supportive, collaborative environment where your contribution matters and which fosters your development.

Hi I’m Lara Meers and I just completed a clerkship with Henry Davis York in the summer of 2014/15.

Henry Davis York stood out as the right firm for me for two reasons – its legal excellence and its culture. The clerkship process can be an overwhelming one but from the very start, I thought HDY was the firm I would most like to work at. By the end of the first week I knew I had made the right choice.

Summer clerks at HDY are given the unique opportunity to rotate through 3 groups. This gives you a fantastic exposure to the firm and the different kinds of work HDY does. It also gives you the chance to meet a number of the talented lawyers who work at HDY. We were given a large amount of responsibility but supported through the whole summer by both partners and lawyers.

While there was work to do over the clerkship, there was also a lot of play. Highlights included winning the best-dressed award twice at the inter-firm trivia night and the inter-firm cruise, drinks with the Managing Partner and some HDY clerk karaoke nights.

I had a fantastic time at HDY and would recommend to people considering doing a clerkship that they make an application. I made great new friends and cannot wait to start with the 11 other clerks as a graduate in 2016. The firm was incredibly supportive and I cannot recommend it more.

MY CLERKSHIP AT HERBERT SMITH FREEHILLS

Stephanie came to Herbert Smith Freehills as a vacation clerk in 2014-15. She is currently a paralegal in our Dispute Resolution group and will soon be joining us as a graduate.

WHY HERBERT SMITH FREEHILLS?Before submitting any applications, I was already very keen on Herbert Smith Freehills. It is ranked as the best top-tier firm in the Australian market, and has the most practice groups working at an elite, or band one, level. I was also taken with their exquisite offices in the new ANZ Tower.

When it came to crunch time, my choice of Herbert Smith Freehills was ultimately driven by the incredibly positive experience I had had with the firm throughout the process. The relationships I had formed with my interviewing partners, my firm buddy, and my dealings with professionals at all levels of the firm at cocktail and information evenings revealed that culturally I was suited to the firm, and that it was the best place to start out my legal career.

I worked with market leaders on high profile matters in a supportive and fun environment, which is why I would recommend the firm to other UTS students.

STEPHANIE PURCELLPARALEGAL, SYDNEY

MY SUMMER AT HERBERT SMITH FREEHILLSOver the summer I rotated through the Energy and Resources team in the Corporate practice group and a Contentious Regulatory focused team in Dispute Resolution. In both rotations, I was treated as a valuable team member and was involved in interesting and incredibly varied types of work. There are conceptions that as a clerk in a large firm you won’t be involved in any ‘real work’. My experience, however, couldn’t have been more different.

Over the course of the summer I reviewed the electricity agreements of all of the major distributors in Australia (including the company I pay my own bills to!), researched and drafted an advice on becoming a registrable Australian body that was actually given to the client, assisted in the court preparation for multiple schemes of arrangement, was involved in high-level strategy discussions surrounding a potential class action, attended numerous client meetings, conducted research for interesting matters surrounding insider trading, and much more.

The amount of time and effort invested in my training and development was also outstanding. Not only are there ongoing training and information sessions throughout the summer, but everyone that I worked with, from support staff to partners, actively ensured I understood the tasks I was completing, and that I was learning from them.

NOT ALL WORKThe summer also provided a range of pro bono opportunities to get involved with, and an even larger range of social activities to enjoy.

I was also involved in work throughout the summer for BABSEA CLEA, a non-for-profit focused on legal education and access to justice in the South Asia region. As a clerk group we also organised two charity events, one of which was a Dragon’s Den style pitch, alongside juniors at the Boston Consulting Group and ANZ, and the other a Herbert Smith Freehills Partner vs. Clerk firm wide debate.

On the social side, there were Christmas parties, lunches and dinners a-plenty, the inter-firm clerk cruise, the inter-firm trivia

night, inter-firm sport and the annual Herbert Smith Freehills Clerk v EPI group touch football match. Our clerk group also formed an incredible bond and friendship; even going away together once the clerkship was over. It was a fun summer, to say the very least!

TIPS FOR THE APPLICATION PROCESSConduct thorough research on each firm, and find out the actual differences between them. Outside of firm websites and the media, actually attending the UTS LSS clerkship seminars run at university by each of the firms is an effective way to do this. You need to be able to understand and state specifically what attracts you to working at a particular firm – both in your applications and interviews. If you don’t have a number of good, specific reasons, then don’t apply to that firm! Firms want candidates who really want work there.

Give yourself enough time to carefully put together your CV, cover letter and other written materials. Then get someone who doesn’t study law to read over them to ensure you are using clear language. Also remember to emphasise all of your strengths. Even your time spent working in a pub or captaining a sports team has given you strong interpersonal and leadership skills that employers want to know about.

Talk to as many people as possible that have worked or currently work at the firm. The insights and perceptions gained from these interactions are invaluable, and far more useful at discerning between firm cultures than written promotional materials.

Be friendly, and be yourself! There is no cookie-cutter clerk, and interviews are actually enjoyable experiences if you are prepared and relaxed. One partner at Herbert Smith Freehills told me that the main thing they prioritise after an interview is the level of rapport – i.e. did they enjoy chatting and getting to know you. This priority was evidenced to me during my interviews at Herbert Smith Freehills as they were friendly, and down-to-earth chats with a single partner, who was very invested in learning first and foremost about who I was as a person.

All the best with the process!

We offer clerkships so that you get a clear picture of what it’s like to be a lawyer at King & Wood Mallesons. You will get to know our people, the way we like to work, our culture, practice areas, clients and more. For many, the clerkship is the fi rst stage of continuous development at King & Wood Mallesons.

We’ve designed a program to help you make the most of your time with us. During your clerkship, you will learn: The day-to-day skills to get you started – taking instructions,

meeting with clients, drafting memos and documents, managing your practice and professional relationships.

The core practice teams at King & Wood Mallesons – who they are, what they do, how they’re structured, the clients they work for, and of course, your role within them.

Our culture – working within your team, you will be exposed to (and encouraged) to get actively involved in the many activities and events that help create our unique culture.

Our people – you will fi nd that people from every part of the business will help you along, sharing their knowledge, and ensuring you have everything you need to fi t in, and do well.

What do we look for? KWM distinguishes itself from other top tier law fi rms in the way that it grows market leaders. We recruit high achieving, client centric, learning agile people with an international perspective. We understand that technical excellence is only one success factor. We value a range of skills in our team members and recognise that a diversity of strengths leads to best results.

We are looking for people who have an intellectual curiosity and are intrinsically motivated. Excellent marks are not necessarily a predictor of career success.

Are you empathetic? Can you stand in the shoes of our client and experience the problem from their perspective?

Is it more important to you to admire the problem or are you most interested in providing a practical, effi cient and commercially sound solution?

Are you traditional and risk averse or are you excited by a changing and fl uid work environment?

When you think about your career are you only focused on Australia, or do you appreciate that Australia’s closest neighbours are the new power houses of the global economy – and you would like to be part of that?

We believe in teamwork and the ‘Power of Together’. We are not a collection of siloed practices, but work closely across the network to help our clients achieve their goals. Through a high performance culture our results are realised through collaboration, innovation and engagement.

The Power of Together

Page 44: 2015 Clerkship Guide

I scripted exactly how the conversation was going to go. Every. Single. Word.

I took a deep breath and dialled in the digits.

What?! Just a friendly, relaxed guy? No weird hyper-formality required? Did I really not need a script?!

This fi rst interaction was characteristic of my time at KWM. Everyone I met was friendly, approachable, passionate, bright and driven. Finding the right people to work with is such an important aspect of starting a career. KWM completely exceeded my expectations in that regard.

The quality of my colleagues was matched by the quality of the work I was exposed to. I rotated through Mergers and Acquisitions and Dispute Resolution and in that time I got the opportunity to see real commercial law at work. I had the chance to:

• Sit in on meetings with clients

• Prepare briefs to counsel

• Attend court

• Meet with Senior Counsel

• Help prepare commercial contracts

As well as being involved in the commercial and legal aspects of the fi rm I was also encouraged to contribute to the fi rm’s community events. I had an amazing time handing out presents to kids in the Children’s Hospital and preparing a meal for the homeless and disadvantaged in Surry Hills.

As I found out over my clerkship, King and Wood Mallesons is a fi rm that values people and values excellence. I had a great summer working at the fi rm!

I have a confession to make. You’re the only person I’ve told. It’s a little bit embarrassing.

I was in the clerkship application process and I needed to call Mitch the Graduate Resourcing Contact at KWM to RSVP to an event. I was kind of nervous – it was my fi rst phone call to someone at the fi rm. I needed to get this right. I mean, people who work at commercial fi rms are scary. They are serious. And important. Any slip of the tongue and I’d be crossed off the list before I could hang up the phone.

There was only one solution. And here’s my confession:

About Lander & Rogers Lander & Rogers is a leading independent Australian law firm operating nationally from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. We have seven main areas of practice: Corporate, Commercial Disputes, Family & Relationship Law (VIC), Insurance Law & Litigation, Property, Projects & Infrastructure, WorkCover (VIC) and Workplace Relations & Safety. We are a principal advisor to many publicly listed and private Australian companies, Australian subsidiaries of global companies, as well as all levels of government. We provide practical legal advice, along with exceptional client service, and we are renowned in Australia for our down-to-earth and friendly culture. We have a distinctively happy workplace, achieved through selectively recruiting people who think and act collaboratively and will strengthen our culture. The firm comprises 65 partners and approximately 400 lawyers, support and business services staff. Pro bono & community support Lander & Rogers is committed to developing a culture and business which supports the undertaking of pro bono work and other similar initiatives in the community. We have a market leading pro bono program in place which focuses on matters of access to justice, social inclusion and community service work, and is driven by a dedicated pro bono partner. We treat pro bono work as equally important to the firm as paid work and everyone is encouraged to participate in and engage with our pro bono work. What it's all about? Our innovative summer clerkship program is built on learning and fun and we’ll do everything we can to show you the way by giving you a chance to have a go for yourself. On joining us you’ll be teamed with two lawyers (one experienced, and another a little closer in level to you) who will immerse you in the day to day running of their practices. What that means on a practical level will vary depending on the practice

group you join (we’ll ask you to indicate your preferences), and could involve:

• Researching points of law and summarising your findings

• Drafting correspondence, court documents and sections of commercial agreements

• Reviewing and analysing legislation and case law

• Observing our lawyers in action at meetings, conferences, mediations and court

• Attending practice group discussions. It's not all work! We value our people and understand the importance of our staff maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. We encourage our summer clerks to get involved in life at Landers as much as possible during their time with us. Our health and wellbeing committee – LandersMax! – encourages our people to get involved in various activities, including BootCamp, Pilates, tennis, triathlon and indoor sports competitions, language classes, in-house massage, social events and much more. What we look for We're in the business of dealing with people, whether that is each other, our clients, barristers or you. So, we aim to recruit people who are friendly, down-to-earth, client-focussed and who can engage with a whole range of people in the workplace. You’ll also need intelligence to tackle the most interesting of legal scenarios, energy to absorb new concepts and changing laws, and a willingness to work productively with lots of different people. We don’t expect that you’ll be a gun at all of these things straight away, but when we meet you at interview we’ll be curious to learn more about your potential to handle these things in the future, based on the skills and experience you’ve already built through studying law (and other disciplines), any legal and non-legal work experience, volunteer work and university activities you’ve tackled. Check out our video 'Working at Lander & Rogers - what's it really like?' to learn more about what our firm has to offer clerks and graduates. http://www.landers.com.au/Careers/Lawstudents/WhyjoinLanderRogers.aspx

A day in the life of a Minter Ellison ClerkElouise FlowersVacation Clerk 2014/2015

How did you feel coming into your clerkship at Minter Ellison and what did you

want to achieve?I was definitely excited to kick off my legal career at a top commercial

law firm. Whilst the prospect of working full time, meeting new people and

attempting to produce good quality work was daunting, it was definitely made

easier by the unique clerkship process offered by the firm. Having been

introduced to all the clerks and a number of employees at the firm prior to

actually starting the clerkship, I was definitely eager to throw myself fully

into the experience. I wanted to make sure that during the short time we had

at Minters, I was able to build strong relationships with both the clerks and

lawyers and be open to the idea of new and challenging experiences.

What is the most valuable thing you will take away from your clerkship so far?

The clerkship has confirmed not only an interest in commercial law for me, but

also an enthusiasm to pursue a legal career at Minter Ellison. The opportunity

to have participated in three different practice groups has been especially

rewarding and helpful in terms of gaining a sense of where my interests lie.

What have you enjoyed most about your clerkship and working at Minter Ellison?

The culture, the people and the work. The work has been enjoyable for a

number of reasons, mainly because I have had the opportunity to be involved

in a diverse range of work, and because it has challenged me in ways that are

conducive to developing a broader skill set. Both the culture of the firm and

the people at Minter Ellison have made the clerkship an extremely positive

and enjoyable experience. From the outset and even before the clerkship

commenced, Minter Ellison stood out for me, mainly because of its dedication

to the clerks and the entire clerkship experience. Every team that I have

had the privilege of working with has been extremely approachable and also

committed to the learning and development of clerks.

including sessions designed to develop technical abilities, research skills and

an understanding of ethical and professional responsibility requirements.

to decide whether commercial law is for me?Our vacation clerkships range from a 2 to 12 week period depending on the office

you are in – giving you a taste of what it’s like to work at Minter Ellison. On

the job training will build your legal skills and commercial acumen. So there
