I believe that it is vital that we create a strong, vibrant community that enhances the stu- dent experience for all. To achieve this we must provide more opportunities for stu- dents to be involved in unique and varied activities that are not only enjoyable but create a connection between students and their school. We need to create an envi- ronment where you can meet new friends and make connections that last a lifetime. One area that I would focus on is The Pit. A campus pub should be the focal point of all student activity, one which the entire student culture flows from. I would work to change the atmosphere in The Pit, by creat- ing a more vibrant, authentic atmosphere that creates a true campus pub experience. While The Pit is a good start and much needs to be done to make it better, much more needs to be done to enhance social life at CBU. We need to do a better job of creating events and spaces that make stu- dents want to stay and get involved, rather than just show up for classes and leave. In closing, I ask that when you vote on February 10th or 11th, you strongly consider me to be your next student’s union president. I believe that together we create a more vibrant, united and enjoyable community, and I hope that you will let me make that happen. 2015 Election Special Hello fellow Capers! My name is Brennan Boudreau, and I would like to be your next Students’ Union President! During my time at CBU I’ve learned that each year is gen- erally either student life focused or about policy and program development. Why should it be one or the other? I think it’s time we experience a year with both. Student life and a majority of events at The Pit this year have been abysmal. The reason for this is lack of promotion and lack in the quality of the events. This has got to change and if I’m elected, I guarantee it will. The Students’ Union needs to start communicating with students better. Each year, the candidates for the election are seen looking for votes, but then they dis- appear. The SU executives have to spend 25 hours a week working. If I’m elected a policy will be put in place requiring the executives to spend a portion of those hours going around and talking to students. Last, I would like to provide a mental health plan that would aim towards guid- ing students towards the mental health ser- vices that they need. Mental health hasn’t received the attention it deserves. Part 2 of the program will work towards promot- ing that having a mental illness is com- mon and that you should not be scared to share that you have one. You did nothing wrong, so why should you feel ashamed? Voting happens February 10th & 11th, everyone please get out and vote. Brennan Boudreau Liam Shannon Andrew Petrie My name is Brandon Ellis and over the past year I have had the honour and privi- lege of serving as your Cape Breton Uni- versity Students’ Union President. Over the past 9 months we have accomplished great things such as opening up an “International Students Center”, we fought a parking fee increase and we have been very open and transparent regarding the CFS case. Over the course of the next year, I intend to con- tinue building on the work that we have already started in the form of several long term projects. My first order of business will be to provide students with Aspiria. I cannot speak highly enough about this ser- vice. Aspiria’s Student Assistance Program will provide our students with a 24/7 Clini- cal Response Centre. If one of our students is ever experiencing a mental health crisis, Aspiria’s toll free number will connect the student directly with a Clinical Psychothera- pist. I feel that this is a service that we greatly need here for our students. In addition, I will continue to advocate for a Fall Reading Week with the Administration here at CBU. In closing, the past year has been the most rewarding experience of my life, it has truly humbled me to be a voice for the students. If elected once more, I will continue to work for the betterment of student life here at Cape Breton University. Candidates for Student’s Union PresidentBrandon Ellis

I’m Liam Shannon and I would be humbled and honored to serve as your next CBUSU President.

In many ways I represent so much of what this university represents.

My Mom was from Baddeck, my Dad from Marion Bridge… My roots are here.

They, like many others of their gen-eration, left Cape Breton in search of work and adventure. I was born in Ottawa and at the ripe age of two, our fam-ily moved to British Columbia. Then it was off to the opposite coast, spending 4 years in Newfoundland and another 4 in Labrador before, as my parents put it, “moved back home to the Cape, b’y.”

My commitment to you is to learn from you, work tirelessly with you and continue to bring that same emotion and spirit to CBU. As important as it is, your University experience is not only about academics, but also about creating memories and friend-

ships you will have and share for a lifetime.

Caper Times Candidates for Student’s Union Executive Vice President

Elizabeth Quirk

Ope Ojo

Baillie FergusonMy name is Baillie Ferguson and I am

running for Executive Vice President for CBU Student Union. I am a second year Bachelor of Arts student, majoring in English special-izing in Dramatic Literature with a minor in Drama. Some of my hobbies include paint-ing, singing in the shower, working in the the-atre anytime I can, and playing video games.

There are many reasons why I want to be your Vice President. Due to my theatrical background, I have no problem with public speaking and presentations. I love going up to people and meeting them face to face. I love planning unique events and fundrais-ers and being involved with my peers as much as I can. I also have past experience working for the Student Union for Aca-dia University before I transferred to CBU.

Like many of the candidates in this year’s election, I have the same interests and ideas for improving the Student Union this upcoming year. Creating a better stu-dent experience, mental health and safety initiative, and more transparency between the student union and the students just to name a few. However, I want the students not only vote for the ideas and the inter-ests, but for the person and their personal-ity as well. That is why, now knowing a bit about myself, that you have a better idea of why I want to be your next Vice President.

My name is Ope Ojo I’m currently in my 4th year in the BBA program (Mar-keting), I’m an international student from Nigeria; living and loving the Cape Breton experience, I’m one of the candidates run-ning the post of executive vice president.

I can totally relate to the experience of most of the students at CBU, who are adapt-ing to a new culture, country, system, set-ting, community, and using past experiences to carve out a new niche for themselves. My goal is to focus on the interests of stu-dents, increasing your say, improve policies that protect you as a student and also stu-dent worker, to be a helping hand on how to manage university, connecting you and the governance body to enhance a better mutual understanding, so as to promote the spirit

of “we help each other, we seek success together”. Together we can make it happen.

I wish to accomplish the following• Improving student life.• Updating policies regard-

ing student security on campus• Increase advocacy by making

sure students are treated fairly and equally• Increase transparency, letting stu-

dent see all that is done in the students’ union I believe I’m the best candidate, because

I’m reliable, accountable, trustworthy, and I pledge to serve you and be your voice when you don’t have one, give me the opportunity and I won’t fail you, thank you.

Please go out and Vote The 10th and 11th of February 2015.

My name is Elizabeth Quirk and I am ‘Here for All Students’. As your candidate for EVP in the upcoming election I am dedi-cated to supporting our students. I have expe-rience in fundraising and planning events for Capers Helping Capers and as Vice President of the COMS Society. I have volunteered on campus for our Women’s Centre and Pride and Ally’s Centre. My involvement in our university has extended across the campus from supporting the Vagina Monologues in our Boardmore Theatre to working on a committee for the first annual Capercon!

My platform will include Transit, Men-tal Health, Safety on Campus and Activi-ties and Societies. Society events and all planned events and activities on campus should be promoted two weeks in advance

to ensure participation and success. There needs to be more Wet/Dry events and events in other spaces in the Students’ Union such as our International Students Cen-tre, Women’s Centre and Pride & Ally’s Centre. These centres are for student use and should be used to your advantage!

I want to encourage all students to come out and vote! Make your voice count in this year’s election. I look forward to working with you in the future and engag-ing in our diverse community here at CBU.

Vote! Vote! Vote!

Senior Class Student Representative

School of Science & Technology Representative

Mark Taylor Vickers Patrick CufinoMy name is Mark Taylor Vickers and

I am running for Senior Student Represen-tative on the SRC. I am presently in my third year of a BACS degree with honours in psychology. I serve as the VP of Com-munication for the CBU Psych Society and as Co-President of the CBU COMS Soci-ety. As well, I am involved with the Eng-lish Society and with CBUSU as a frosh leader and as a volunteer with the Pride and Ally Centre and Capers Helping Capers.

If I am elected as Senior Student Rep, I promise to make sure we have a rocking grad year. I plan on starting a grad committee early, advocating for multiple events for grads through the year, including additional career fairs, meet and greets with CBU Alumni to build connections, and some fun events for grads, such as socials and movie nights.

SRC members need to be transparent and approachable. I promise you that you will be informed of all events and goings-on with the SU (grad related or otherwise) through Twitter, Facebook, email, face-to-face contact, carrier pigeon, etc. I will also advocate for promptly released (and more publicly available) SRC minutes and for live tweeting of SRC meetings.

I hope that you will come out to vote this year. Feel free to tweet me (@marktay-lorv), Facebook me or stop me in the hall if you have any questions about me or my campaign. If I am elected, I promise that we’ll have an amazing final year at CBU.

Hi I’m Patrick Cufino and I’m running for a seat on the SRC for the school of Sci-ence & Technology. Political councils and voting committees have long since been the domain of business and Law minded individ-uals; however, it is my intention to see to it that science and engineering become a stron-ger voice within our schools political system. Wisdom tempered with the values of equal-ity, fairness and freedom of speech are what I believe the students of my school wish to see represented, and it is my full intention to apply my world experience to that end mak-ing sure that science & technology students are never forgotten in the process of politics. I am a youth educator, a former zoo keeper and lover of the sciences, building my way to an honours degree in biology and psychology and loving every minute of it. My desire is to help science and engineering students find the same passion, weather through advice, tutoring or fighting for their best inter-ests within our student union. Thank you.
