9-Inch STENLOG (Straw Wattle)

The 9-inch (23 cm) Stenlog (Straw Wattle) is an elongated tube of compacted straw

and/or other fibers wrapped in UV stabilized degradable tubular polypropylene plastic netting. The 9-inch (23 cm) Stenlog is used for temporary erosion and sediment control applications and are commonly installed along the contours or at the base of a slope to help reduce soil erosion and retain sediment. The Stenlog is designed to allow runoff/water to penetrate through the fiber while reducing sediment migration. Stenlogs function as slope interruption devices and therefore shorten slope lengths reducing runoff velocity and the potential for sheet erosion and rill formation. Stenlogs work in conjunction with surface roughening, straw mulching, bonded fiber matrix, hydroseeding and erosion control blankets to further reduce erosion and sediment migration.

• The Stenlog provides a cost effective alternative to other sediment trapping devices.

• The Stenlog can be easily installed and removed.

• The straw matrix of the 9-inch Stenlog is biodegradable

• The functional longevity is approximately 6-18 months, depending on moisture, light, and environmental conditions.

Description:

Curlex Sediment Logs are designed to provide intimate contact with the soil, which prevents undermining and blowouts. Curlex Sediment Logs are porous. This property allows water to pass through the 100% excelsior matrix, which slows velocity and filters sediment as it passes through the log diameter. Curlex Sediment Logs may be installed over bare soil, over rolled erosion control products, on steep slopes, around inlets and outlets, or around jobsites for perimeter control. Curlex Sediment Logs are available palletized or master packed to minimize material handling requirements. Custom diameters, lengths, and densities are optional based upon material availability and sample approval. Curlex Sediment Logs shall be manufactured in the U.S.A. at company locations where QA/QC is implemented and managed by the manufacturer. Field fabricated products and products made by anyone other than the manufacturer (i.e. distributors, dealers, etc.) shall not be accepted.

Note: Curlex Sediment Logs may be compressed when packaged. The unique packaging can result in a less than symmetrical shape upon arrival to the jobsite. This will not affect the performance capability of Curlex Sediment Logs because unique Curlex fibers naturally expand upon wetting and return to a symmetrical tubular shape. All measurements are nominal.

3.02 INSTALLATION

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

This section specifies a hydraulically-applied Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) composed of long strand, thermally processed wood fibers and proprietary crosslinked, hydro-colloid tackifiers and activators. The BFM may require a 24-48 hour curing period to achieve maximum performance. Once cured, the BFM forms an intimate bond with the soil surface to create a continuous, absorbent, flexible erosion resistant blanket that allows for rapid germination and accelerated plant growth.

1.02 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data and installation instructions. Include required substrate preparation, list of materials, and application rate.

B. Certifications: Manufacturer shall submit a letter of certification that the products meets or exceeds all physical property, endurance, performance and packaging requirements.

1.03 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Deliver materials and products in UVI weather resistant factory labeled packages.  Store and handle in strict compliance with manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations.  Protect from damage from weather, excessive temperatures, and construction operations.

A Strictly comply with manufacturer’s installation instructions and recommendations. For optimum pumping and application performance use approved mechanically agitated, hydraulic seeding/mulching machines with a fan-type nozzle (50-degree tip). Apply BFM from opposing directions and to achieve best soil coverage.

B Erosion Control and Revegetation:

For maximum performance, apply BFM in a two-step process:

Step One: Mix and apply seed and soil amendments with small amount of BFM for visual metering.

Step Two: Mix and apply BFM at a rate of 50 lb per 100 gallons of water over freshly prepared surfaces. Confirm loading rates with equipment manufacturer. Do not leave seeded surfaces unprotected, especially if precipitation is imminent.

Depending upon site conditions BFM may be applied in a one-step process where all components may be mixed together in single tank loads. Consult with manufacturer for further details.

Do not apply on saturated soils or substrates. Do not apply if precipitation is anticipated within 24-48 hours. Minimum curing temperature is 40°F (4°C). Best results and more rapid curing are achieved at temperatures exceeding 60°F (15°C). Curing times may be accelerated in high temperature, low humidity conditions with product applied on dry soils.

Over-application of product may inhibit germination and plant growth.

C. Mixing:

A mechanically agitated hydraulic-application machine is recommended:

i. Fill tank to middle of agitator shaft or tank about 1/3 full of water. Turn on pump to wet or purge lines. Begin agitating. Keep adding water slowly while adding the BFM at a steady rate.

ii. Consult application and loading charts to determine number of bags to be added. Mix at a rate of 50 lbs. of BFM per 100 gallons. Contact equipment manufacturer to confirm optimum BFM mixing rates.

iii. All BFM should be loaded when the tank is approximately 3/4 full.

iv. Fertilizer should be added once the tank is nearly full. v. Before applying, mix the slurry for at least 10 minutes after

adding the last amount of BFM. This is very important to fully activate the bonding additives and to attain proper viscosity.

vi. Turn off recirculation valve to minimize potential for air entrainment within the slurry.

vii. Conduct Free water test.viii. Refer to manufacturer Guide for more detailed information.

D. Application:

Use a fan-type nozzle (50-degree tip) whenever possible for best soil surface coverage. Apply BFM from opposing directions to soil surface, reducing the “shadow effect” and assuring a minimum of 95% of soil surface coverage. Slope interruption devices or water diversion techniques are recommended when slope lengths exceed 50 feet (15m). Install materials at the following minimum application rates:

Condition English SI<3H to 1V 3000 lb/ac 3400 kg/ha

>3H to 1V and <2H to 1V 3500 lb/ac 3900 kg/ha>2H to 1V and <1H to 1V 4000 lb/ac 4500 kg/ha

Below ECB or TRM 1500 lb/ac 1700 kg/haAs infill for TRM 3500 lb/ac 3900 kg/ha

Increase application rates on highly erosive soils or chiseled, disked, furrowed or tracked slopes.

Material should not be applied in channels, swales or other areas where concentrated flows are anticipated, unless installed in conjunction with a temporary erosion control blanket or non-degradable turf reinforcement mat.

After application, thoroughly flush the tank, pumps and hoses to remove all BFM material. Wash all material from the exterior of the machine and remove any slurry spills. Once dry, BFM will be more difficult to remove.

3.03 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

Clean spills promptly. Advise Owner of methods for protection of treated areas. Do not allow treated areas to be trafficked or subjected to grazing.

GRIDPRO™ BXP11 is a punched and drawn geogrid containing polypropylene that is integrally formed into a biaxial geogrid. GRIDPRO BXP11 will meet the following Minimum Average Roll Values (MARV) when tested in accordance with the methods listed below. These characteristics make GRIDPRO BXP11 ideal for the construction of unpaved or asphalt paved roads, steepened slopes, and modular block and/or wrapped-face retaining walls. The geogrid is resistant to ultraviolet degradation and to biological and chemical environments normally found in soils.

NOTES: 1. Unless notified otherwise, values shown are minimum average roll values determined in accordance with ASTM D4759-02. Brief descriptions of test

procedures are given in the following notes. 2. Nominal dimensions. 3. True resistance to elongation when initially subjected to a load determined in accordance with ASTM D6637-01 without deforming test materials under load

before measuring such resistance or employing “secant” or “offset” tangent methods of measurement so as to overstate tensile properties. 4. Load transfer capability determined in accordance with GRI-GG2-05 and expressed as a percentage of ultimate tensile strength. 5. Resistance to bending force determined in accordance with ASTM D5732-01, using specimens of width two ribs wide, with transverse ribs cut flush with exterior

edges of longitudinal ribs (as a “ladder”), and of length sufficiently long to enable measurement of the overhang dimension. 6. Resistance to in-plane rotational movement measured by applying a 20 kg-cm (2 m-N) moment to the central junction of a 9 inch x 9 inch specimen restrained at

its perimeter in accordance with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Methodology for measurement of Torsional Rigidity. 7. Resistance to loss of load capacity or structural integrity when subjected to mechanical installation stress in clayey sand (SC), well graded sand (SW), and crushed

stone classified as poorly graded gravel (GP). The geogrid shall be sampled in accordance with ASTM D6637-01. 8. Resistance to loss of load capacity or structural integrity when subjected to chemically aggressive environments in accordance with EPA 9090 immersion testing. 9. Resistance to loss of load capacity or structural integrity when subjected to 500 hours of ultraviolet light and aggressive weathering in accordance with ASTM

D4355-05.
