Here it comes! The season for holiday gift giving and all the fa-la-la-la-la you can stand. It is an unstoppable juggernaut! And every year, it’s a new challenge to find special gifts, that perfect something for our families and friends.
Luckily, there is no shortage of gift ideas when we have ac-cess to so many superb shops in the area — either in downtown Princeton or just a short driving distance away.
Jazams on Palmer Square (www.jazams.com, 609-924-8697) in Princeton is always an exceptional toy store for kids of all ages! Finding toys for kids is fairly easy (they make those long lists, after all), but many of us adults love to find a toy of some kind under the tree too!
One playful gift choice for an adult is the Buddha Board. It is a Zen version of Etch-A-
Sketch. Using a Japanese brush, you paint with water on a special board.
Your masterpiece fades and you paint again. Kids
would like this one too. Price $36.99.
Also at Jazams, for a serious adult tinkerer, there
are many sophisticated build- ing kits from Anchor Stone Blocks that allow someone to build with small stone blocks in many architectural styles ($169 and up).
If you have a teenage girl on your shopping list, a trip to Botari, a purse boutique on Palmer Square (609-430-3031) might be just the shop- ortunity you need. The store has a perfect purse for every oc-casion, no exagger-ation! A most unusual choice — a small hand clutch that looks and
smells like a bar of chocolate is quite the conver-sation starter! Price $32.
Gifts for the whole family can be found at Ten Thousand Villages (tenthousand villages.com; 609-683-4464) at Princeton Shopping Center. Known for fair trade and green practices, the store carries
a wide variety of handmade imported jewelry, accessories, baskets, home goods,

toys and trinkets (great stocking stuffers!). Pick up a huge Bolga basket for storing things or a fashionable trip to the market. Price $59.
At Savory Spice Shop on Spring Street in Princeton (15 Spring St., www.savoryspiceshop.com; 609-619-5181) you might find a nifty stocking stuffer gift for your favorite
cook, perhaps a small treat of the ex-pensive spice, saffron. This labor- intensive spice costs $5,000 a pound, but a gram should be plenty and only costs $12.50.
For some kooky cook gifts: you can find a Wonder Woman apron
for $24.95 and a quirky R2-D2 Kitchen Timer for $29.95. Check them
out at Paper Source on Nassau Street in Princeton (w w w.pap er s ou rc e .c om; 609-921-0932).
Do you need something for a wine lover? A funky cork-screw makes an unusual gift.
A double-hinged corkscrew designed by Alessi looks like a whimsical parrot. It also includes a knife and bottle cap lifter. You can find this at Kitchen Kapers on Palmer Square for $62.99 (www.kitchen kapers.com; 609-924-9190).
For a fisherman, The Front Porch in Pennington (www.thefrontporchnj.com; 609-737-0071) carries a shark bottle opener for $48.
For those looking for artistic Judaica gifts, A Mano in Lambertville (www.amano galleries.com; 609-397-0063) has a diverse selection. The store carries a dazzling selec-tion of colorful, glass-fused menorahs by Tamara Baskin in Jewish themes, such as the Children of Israel, the Wall of Jerusalem. Price $120.
Sometimes there are people who are impossibly tough to shop for, but you can save yourself a shopping headache by buying a token gift for their pet.

Picky Paws in Lambertville (www.pickypaws.com; 609-397-7297) has unusual canine items made spe- cifically for their pet boutique. For the coming wet winter weather, a Soggy Doggy Super Shammy, a super-absorbant chenille towel, will make quick work of drying off any pooch. Price: $20.
Amwell Pet Supply in Hillsborough (www.amwellpetsupply.com; 908-359-5117) has a very clever chew toy for dogs called Hear Doggy — it has a silent squeaker that only dogs can hear! Price: $18.
A gift certificate from the right store can be just as personal
and thoughtful as a hand-picked present and it’s better than a last-minute gift card to some big box store.
For a co-worker or any other woman on your list, a gift certifi- cate for elegant organic lotions and upscale cosmetics from Origins (w w w.or ig i ns .com; 6 0 9 - 4 3 0 - 9 4 4 0 ) or Blue Mercury (www. bluemercury.com; 609-497-9100) might be just the thing. Both shops are on Palmer Square in Princeton.
One stop at the Princeton Shopping Center may take care of several gift certificates. Metropolis Spa & Salon, Blue Ridge Mountain Sports and Cutter’s Mill Natural Pet Center are excellent options!
Two other good gift certificate ideas for the “hard to buy for” teens and men on your list: The comic book store Comic Relief on Quakerbridge Road in Lawrenceville (www.comicrelief.com; 609-452-7548) and Princeton Record Exchange on South Tulane Street in Princeton (www.prex.com; 609-921-0881). The outstanding, comprehensive selection in each of these stores will make for a great shopping adventure for some lucky guy!

Get Your Shopping Done in One DayTips on stress-free buying for the season
By Keith Loria
Sure, it’s easy to sit in the warm confines of your home or office and sift through your computer looking for gifts, buying toys, clothes and all the items on your
Christmas list without ever leaving your chair. But for those who really like to get into the holiday spirit,
there’s nothing like hitting the stores and searching for items that you physically choose by hand. Yes, park-ing and long lines can get frustrating, but looking at actual gifts on display and being handed a bag with purchases from an actual person can get the holiday juices flowing.
The trouble is, many people just don’t have the time or in-clination to spend more than a day shopping, but if you plan accordingly, and are willing to devote an entire day to the ex-perience, you can get all your shopping done in one day.
First, make sure you begin your day early and hit the stores when they first open. If you are going to devote an entire day to getting the job done, you don’t want to waste any hours. Check out the schedules ahead of time so you know when the stores you want to visit open and close. If you can plan your one day for a week-day, it will make it easier, but the closer you get to Christmas, the stores will get more crowded, even on weekdays.
Have your list prepared ahead of time. You don’t need to decide on specific items, but at the very least, know who you want to buy for, the price point you are seeking and what type of item you want. If you notice you need 10 articles of clothing, 5 toys and a couple of knick knacks, you’ll want to begin with the clothing stores to get the most gifts scratched from your list.
Before you head out, download any coupons or free apps offered by your favorite retailers so you know

the latest information on sales. Smartphone users can use the no-cost app ScanLife to scan
a product’s barcode and find out which local or online establishment has the
best price. This will save you money in the long run.
Luckily, there are plenty of places in the area with enough stores to help you find something for everyone on your gift-giving list and accomplish your goal of do- ing all your shopping in one day.
MarketFair, 3535 N. US 1 in West Windsor, has stores offer- ing gifts for everyone from the

very young (BabyGap) to tweens (Janie & Jack), to college-aged (Banana Republic) to millennials (Eastern Mountain Sports) to Baby Boomers (Brookstone) to seniors (Kitchen Magic). One can spend an entire day shopping, eat at one of its convenient restau-rants on-site, and go home with all the gifts they need in hand.
The same is true for the Princeton Shopping Center, 301 N. Harrison St., which offers dozens of retail stores that sell clothing, furniture, sportswear, pet supplies and just about anything you can think of.
The Quaker Bridge Mall in Lawrenceville is another great place to pick up gifts. With its more than 90 stores catering to all ages and all fashions, there’s little reason to go anywhere else to get your shopping done in one full swoop.
Don’t forget to add holiday decorations and other things you will need for the season to your list. Small items like stocking stuffers, ribbon, holiday cards, and cookie cutters should all be included on your shopping list so you don’t have to go out and brave the cold, crowds, and stores anymore after this one designated trip.
One final piece of advice, if you have kids, leave them at home! Same is true for any friends or relatives who like your plan and want to tag along. Having others around will only slow you down. They might spend more time in a store than you need looking for their own items, they’ll want to have a nice leisurely lunch, and they will gossip away, distracting you from your mission.
If Santa Claus can deliver toys to all the world’s children in one night, there’s no reason to think you can’t get all your shop-ping done in one day. Plan accordingly, shop smart and be determined in your goal.

A ‘Nutcracker’ For EveryoneNew Jersey Youth Ballet brings its version of the holiday
favorite to Kelsey TheatreBy Keith Loria
The New Jersey Youth Ballet will once again magically transport audiences at Kelsey Theatre to The Land of the Sweets in an hour-long, fully narrated version of the
classic ballet, “Nutcracker.”With four shows scheduled, Dec. 19-20, the family-friendly
ballet is the perfect holiday treat, and makes for a great way to introduce young children to ballet, theater, and the music of Tchaikovsky.
“It’s a tradition for us, and here in Hillsborough, a lot of people come see it each year,” says David Kieffer, director or the New Jersey Youth Ballet. “We are one of the few youth ballet compa-nies around.”
The narrated and abridged version of “Nutcracker” helps make ballet appealing to kids of all ages, according to Mr. Kieffer.
“Most kids aren’t going to sit through a 2- or 3-hour ballet,” he says.
The dancers in “Nutcracker” are ages 5 to 18, and come from all over central New Jersey.
“The show is danced primarily by children, and we are really proud that we have these young dancers, and are able to put on a professional show with the youth in our community,” Mr. Kieffer says. “We love that when they get on stage, they are framed by a professional set.”
Along those lines, the ballet company doesn’t just bring back the same old costumes and sets every year.
“One of the things we pride ourselves on is improving the pro-duction from year to year,” Mr. Kieffer says. “We love to add to our set every year and replace costumes with something new.”
This year, the show has added new lights to its 25-foot tree, en-abling it to light up in a way it hasn’t in years prior. Also new this year is that Jacqueline Lorenzi is choreographing the show solo.
“Last year we co-directed but this year she will be handling all the duties,” Mr. Kieffer says. “She is a wonderful choreographer and just brings a little bit different flavor, which is always nice.”
Playing the role of Clara is 12-year-old Sarah Tobia, who has

been with the New Jersey Youth Ballet for close to eight years. New to the production is 6-year-old Juliana Skolnick, who will be dancing as a mouse and another ginger kid.
“By performing in the ‘Nutcracker’ she is building so much self confidence as well as teamwork skills,” says her mother, Judie Skolnick. “She practices many times during the week on her own accord and is so dedicated to doing a good job. The older ad-vanced dancers are wonderful and take such loving care of the little ones.”
Sarah H. Della Croce, mother of 16-year-old Rebecca, has seen her daughter in this show for the past five years.
“I will never forget her first year. I volunteered to sell souvenirs at the Kelsey Theater shows; it was great, I got to watch both her shows that day, but that is not what I remember,” Sarah Croce says. “It was as the audience exited the theater, specifically two women talking about how much they enjoyed the performance and how it gets better every year. I watched these two ladies leave the auditorium and realized that they had come to see a perfor-mance and didn’t personally know anyone in the cast. Imagine. People coming to see my daughter dance. So every year since, I have sat in the auditorium looking around watching the families enjoying their holiday tradition of watching my daughter — and all the kids — dance the ‘Nutcracker.’”
Lisa Castano has two daughters in the show — 12-year-old Alexandra and 8-year-old Eva. Her eldest dances in the “Snow” and “Waltz of the Flowers” scenes, and is the lead in “Chinese Dance” as well. Alexandra dances with dolls in a party scene, plays a soldier in the battle scene and is dancing in the “Russian Dance” in the second half of the ballet.
“My children have learned so much being a part of this. I have seen my daughters learn that hard work has rewards. But more importantly I have seen them learn about perseverance and dedication,” Ms. Castano says. “My girls give up their week-ends and pass up invitations without much complaining because they know that in the end they are a part of something special. However, the most powerful lesson they have learned (by) being a part of The New Jersey Youth Ballet is being a part of a large family and how we need and help each other.”
In her opinion, this production is worth seeing every Christmas season because it is centered around a time of year that families typically get together and create traditions.
“Families can spend time together at a theater without spend-ing a fortune on tickets and enjoy the experience of attending a ballet,” she says. “We, as parents, besides being chauffeurs, perform, sew, create scenery and props, chaperone, and even sell souvenirs. In this ballet company we applaud each other’s successes, we encourage each child to reach their personal best and most of all truly enjoy putting this production on year after year.”
The New Jersey Youth Ballet will perform the “Nutcracker” at Kelsey Theatre on the campus of Mercer County Community College, 1200 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor, Dec. 19-20, with performances set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. both dates. After the show, the audience is encouraged to come onstage to meet the dancers, interact with them, take photos and ask the performers for autographs. Tickets cost $16, $14 seniors/students/children. For tickets and information, go to www.kelseyatmccc.org or call 609-570-3333.
