Holiday shopping domi-nates many people’s free time between the

day after Thanksgiving and the final days before Christmas. While many people may shop ‘til they drop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, those days still account for a relatively small amount of the hundreds of billions of dollars that are spent each holiday season. Shoppers now have an array of options at their disposal as they embark on holiday shop-ping season. Traditional in-store retailers are still around, and online shopping continues to grow in popularity with each holiday season. But many holi-day shoppers are looking to buy local this holiday season, and such a decision can pay a host of dividends for both shoppers and the communities they call home.

BENEFITS TO BUYING LOCAL THIS

holiday seasonBUYING LOCAL CREATES JOBS IN YOUR COMMUNITY. One of the biggest ways local business owners recirculated their revenue in the local economy was job creation. While national chains also create jobs, such jobs only benefit your community if the chains are located within your community. If your local mall is a considerable drive away, chances are the chains within that mall are not employing many of your fellow community members. Local businesses in your com-munity are more likely to employ residents of your town.

SHOPPING LOCAL MAY PROVIDE ACCESS TO MORE UNIQUE GIFTS. In addition to the economic benefits of buying local, shoppers may find merchandise made by local craftsmen is more unique than mass-produced items found on the shelves of national retailers. Recipients may cherish more unique items that they can-not find on their own, and that appreciation may even spur them to visit more local retailers after the holiday season has come and gone, benefiting their own commu-nities in so doing.

LOCAL BUSINESS MAY PROVIDE A MORE PERSONAL TOUCH. Buying from national chains has its advantages, but customer service is not always one of them. Should your loved ones encounter problems with their gift that requires assistance, they might be forced to wait on the phone for extended periods of time as they and thousands of others wait for customer service representatives to answer their calls. Local businesses do not deal with nearly the volume of customers as na-tional retailers and, therefore, are capable of addressing concerns more quickly and personally than large chains.

4BUYING LOCAL BENEFITS YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY. Studies from Civic Economics, an economics and strategics plan-ning firm, found that independent, locally-owned retailers return a far greater percentage of their reve-nue into their local economies than national chain stores. One such study examined the disparity be-tween revenue recirculation among independent, locally-owned busi-nesses in Raleigh, North Carolina, versus four major national chains in the city. The former recirculated 51.1 percent of revenue into the local economy, while the latter recirculated less than 14 percent. Similar results were discovered in many cities, indicating that buying local not only benefits local busi-ness owners, but also the com-munities those owners and their customers call home.

Holiday shopping takes up a considerable amount of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Shoppers who scour in-store and online retailers in the hunt for the perfect gift annually spend hundreds of billions of dollars during such

pursuits, and what they swipe when making purchases could go a long way toward how their new year begins. Overreliance on credit cards to make holiday purchases can prove crippling once the calendar turns to January. According to an analysis of statistics from the Federal Reserve, the average household consumer debt in the United States was more than $15,700 as of June of 2015. That’s roughly one-tenth the average mortgage debt, suggesting that many consumers are relying too heavily on credit cards when making their purchases. This holiday season, consumers concerned about swiping their credit cards too often can take the following steps to more effectively manage their credit.

HOW TO

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

manage credit

KNOW WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD. Swiping now and dealing with the consequences in January is a recipe for a rocky new year. In some cases, it can benefit consumers to make pur-chases with their credit cards as opposed to their debit cards. For instance, when making purchases online, it’s often safer to use a credit card rather than a debit card linked to your checking and savings accounts, as using the latter can make your life’s savings vulnerable to hackers. But don’t start swiping your credit cards until you know what you can afford. Exam-ine your finances and only use your credit card if you know you can repay the balance before it incurs any interest. If you can’t pay the balance in full at the time the payment is due, use a debit card so you are only spending money you already have and not taking out what amounts to a high-inter-est loan on your holiday purchases.

RESIST RETAILER CARDS.When making in-store purchases, chances are the cashier will invite you to sign up for a retailer credit card, even offering an immediate discount if you do so at the registers. While this discount may seem too tempting to ignore, keep in mind that many retailer credit cards come with consider-ably higher interest fees on balances that are not paid off in full. So that discount at the register may end up costing you more money if you get to January and can’t pay the balance in its entirety.

TRY NOT TO JUGGLE CARDS.Many shoppers juggle multiple cards to avoid building up too big a bal-ance on one particular card during the holiday season. But that’s an easy way to lose track of how much you have spent. Rather than juggling cards, use only the one with the lowest interest rate.

MONITOR YOUR BALANCES.Swiping a credit card is easy and hassle-free, and many retailers both big and small now accept various types of cards. Keep a close eye on your balances, checking them online after each shopping trip. This can help you control your spending and also can alert you to any fraudulent activity.

Tri-County Times — Sunday, December 13, 2015 Page 5

SHOP DURING OFF-PEAK HOURS.Weekends and weeknight evenings tend to be the busiest times to go holiday shop-ping. Professionals who have weekends off may put off their shopping during the week, choosing to do so on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when they have extra time to browse and comparison shop. Shopping off-peak hours, such as during weekday mornings or even early mornings on weekends, is a great way to avoid crowds. Parents of young children might want to take a morning or even a full day off of work to get their holiday shopping done so they can avoid shopping with their kids in tow. You can probably move around more quickly if you choose to shop while the kids are in school, and this also affords you time to find gifts for the kids.

MAKE A LIST. Knowing what you want to buy online can decrease the amount of time you spend wandering around malls and stores. The longer you linger without an idea of what to buy, the greater the chance you will be joined by fellow shoppers. If possible, call stores before you leave the house to confirm if they have certain items in stock, or buy items online from retailers who offer an in-store pickup option. Checkout lines for in-store pickup items are often separated from more traditional checkout lines, further reducing your risk of waiting in long lines.

SHOP LOCAL BUSINESSES. Small local businesses may not boast the inventory of larger retailers you’re liable to encounter at the mall, but local small businesses tend to deal with thinner crowds than national stores during the holiday season. Items in such businesses may be more unique than items sold at nationwide retailers, and when you shop at smaller businesses, you likely won’t be forced to hunt for parking spots or wait on long checkout lines.

START SHOPPING EARLY. Crowds only grow bigger and more impatient between Black Friday and the final days before Christmas, so shoppers who can find the time to shop before the height of the shopping season might find parking lots and checkout lines more to their liking. In addition, shopping early affords shoppers more time to find the best deals.

Holiday shopping can be both fun and hectic. While it’s fun to scour stores looking for can’t-miss gifts for your loved ones, shopping amongst the crowds also can prove hectic.

While online shopping has made department stores somewhat less crowded come the holiday season, the National Retail Federation reported that online shopping last holiday season accounted for just one-sixth of all holiday shop-ping. The opportunity to see and feel potential gifts in person compels many people to do the majority of their holiday shopping in-store, and there are ways for such shoppers to avoid the holiday shopping rush as they begin their quests for the perfect gifts. Be sure to check to see if your favorite local store has a website, most do. These websites allow you to browse their products at your leisure. Also, these locally owned stores may allow purchases to be made on their websites.

WAYS TO

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

stay healthy

CARRY DISINFECTING WIPES. Germs can linger on surfaces long after an infected person has come and gone. Studies from researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson have found the flu virus - and even the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA - on airline tray tables. Buses, trains and doors all may be harboring germs. Wipe down surfaces with disinfecting wipes and allow them to air-dry before touch-ing them. This can help you avoid coming into contact with germs.

TALK TO SOMEONE. If the holidays have you feeling blue, talk to a friend or family member. If you need more professional support, find a social worker or psycholo-gist that can help you work through stress and other feelings.

DON'T FOCUS ON FOOD. Focus more on enjoyable activities that keep you moving rather than always being seated around the table for a big meal. Save indul-gences for one or two treats on the holidays and eat sensibly otherwise.

KEEP UP AN EXERCISE ROUTINE. Don’t stray too far from your exercise schedule. You may have to move workout times to free up other time later in the day for shopping or parties. Early morning is a good time to exercise because it gets you moving first thing in the morning and might even encourage you to hit the sack a little earlier each night, ensuring you get all the sleep you need. Exercise also can improve energy levels and relieve stress.

BALANCE YOUR ACTIVITIES. It can be tempting to overbook your schedule with a ton of activities, but this may ultimately prove stressful. Leave days open to relax and do things you want to do, such as viewing Christ-mas light displays or even just unwinding at home with a good book. Try delegating some tasks to others in the household so you don’t take on too much responsibility.

GET THE FLU VACCINE. The flu vaccine can protect you against various strains of the flu. Get a flu shot before the holidays so you are ready for cold and flu season.

With the holiday season upon us, many people’s schedules are hectic once again. There are

social events and family gatherings to attend, shopping ventures to make, and decorating to be done. While fun, the holiday season can be a time of added pressure, which leads to stress and other unhealthy situations. At a time when you want to be at your best, stress can affect your physical well-being. The American Psychological As-sociation says the hustle and bustle of the holidays has psychological consequences for some people. More people are inclined to feel that their stress increases, rather than decreases, around the holidays. The National Institute of Mental Health says chronic stress can lower immunity and cause excretory, digestive and reproduc-tive systems to stop working properly. Stress also may cause you to eat unhealthy snacks to cope, and that can lead to un-wanted weight gain. Stress is not the only potential health hazard that can arise around the holidays.

A greater number of parties expose you to an abundance of foods and drinks you may not consume on a regular basis, and that can lead to a lot of mindless eating. Weight gained during this time of year can be difficult to shed come January, when colder temperatures challenge many peoples’ motivation to exercise. Also, social settings put you in close contact with a greater number of people, potentially increasing your exposure to germs. You can still feel your best during the holidays. Follow the tips at right for maintaining a healthy mind and body.

THE ADVANTAGES OF last-minute holiday shoppingShopping late in the season may be advantageous

for some people. Tackling tasks well in advance has many

advantages, and often it is in one’s best interest to be ahead of the game, including when the game at hand is holiday shopping. But men and women who simply can’t get a head start on their holiday shopping need not fear, as waiting until the eleventh hour to do the bulk of your shopping can have some distinct advantages, too. Consumer Reports’ found 9 percent of shoppers — an estimated 17 million people — planned to shop in stores on Christmas Eve. Many stores are still open on Christmas Eve, even if the doors are only unlocked for a limited number of hours. That gives shoppers one last chance to find the perfect presents. In addition to having more time to decide on gifts, here are some other benefits to shopping later in the season.

SMALLER CROWDS: As the holiday season winds down, many shop-pers have already completed their shopping. Fewer people tend to be in stores in the final days before Christmas, as they are readying their homes for company or making travel plans. This can be a prime time for shopping and getting through malls or other retailers in less time.

DISCOUNTED PRICES:Anxious to reduce inventory and make the most of end-of-the-year profits, stores may discount mer-chandise even further for fast sale. Shoppers anxious to save a little bit more or come in under budget may

find waiting to shop is to their financial advantage.

LOWER CHANCE OF DISCOVERY:One difficulty of shopping early is keeping all of the gifts hidden for the duration of the month. Waiting until later to shop means only having to camouflage gifts for a few days. When you wait, curious kids are less likely to find their gifts before the big day.

LAST-MINUTE SPECIALS: Some online retailers offer “doorbuster” sales at various times during the holiday shopping season. These sales may offer additional discounts or even free shipping. Just be sure to balance the benefits of the discount against the shipping price. If it means having to pay a premium for overnight shipping, it may not be worth the investment.

MORE TIME TO PLANBy the end of the holiday season you may have a better idea of what you need to purchase. You also may have polled others regarding what they are giv-ing, reducing the chances of giving duplicate gifts.

GIFT CARDS GALORE: Some people prefer to give gift cards, which are available all season long. Consumer Reports says 62 percent of last-minute shoppers grab gift cards. If you fall into that category, waiting to buy the cards won’t be an issue so long as you make it to the stores before they close.

DID YOU KNOW?

Many people begin their holiday shopping around the end of summer, when retailers first begin to roll out new clothing lines and mark down existing items to

make way for new inventory. Beginning holiday shopping near the end of summer or the beginning of fall may seem a little early, but early shoppers often find that starting earlier affords them more time to find the right gifts at the right prices. Early

shoppers can comparison shop without the specter of the fast-approaching holiday hanging over their heads, and comparison shopping helps consumers feel more confident that they are get-ting the best deals possible. Starting early with regard to holiday shopping also allows shoppers to avoid the financial crunch that shoppers who wait until the holiday season begins often feel. Spreading out spending over several months as opposed to the handful of weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a great way for shoppers to avoid buying too many gifts on credit, which can make for a penny-pinching start to the new year when bills come due in early- to mid-January.

FILL THE CHRISTMAS STOCKING — divide into teams and have participants race to fill their team’s hanging stocking with a spoonful of wrapped candy.

WORD FIND — use Christmas words like poinsettia, candy cane, etc. and have each person make as many smaller words as possible before the timer runs out.

CHRISTMAS CAROL CHARADES — get dramatic and act out your favorite holiday songs, while others try to guess.

PHOTO BOOTH — provide silly backdrops and props for guests to “get silly” in front of an amateur photographer.

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE — each person tells two stories about himself, two of which are true and one that is not. Turn it into a holiday game by having the person name their three worst Christmas gifts; two would be true and one is false.

DECORATE A PERSON as a Christmas tree, using green crepe paper, ornaments, tinsel. First or best one wins. You could also dress as a snowman with toilet paper.

ORNAMENT GUESS — have guests guess the total number of ornaments on the tree as they come into the party. The one with the closest guess wins a prize.

CHRISTMAS MEMORY GAME — place a number of Christmas items on a tray and give them a minute to remember the items. They have 30 seconds to write down as many as they can remember.

BIRTH YEAR GIFTS — before drawing names for a gift exchange, have everyone write down their birth year. The person who gets their name buys a gift for them relating to the year they were born.

GET WHAT YOU REALLY WANT GIFT GAME — have each person bring a wrapped gift for himself. Gifts are all mixed up and passed out. Everyone opens one gift and must guess who bought it. Whoever has the most correct guesses wins the pot of dollar bills, brought by each guest.
