The publication you are reading reflects the work we have been doing to unite the Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce with the Visitor Center – one stop shopping for visitors’ informational needs. Our new building has been in place for nearly 18 months and we continue to make adjustments, the latest adding
some esthetics and landscaping. Last year nearly 11,000 people visited the center, and
another 13,000 called or e-mailed us to gather informa-tion about our area. We now have Visitor Center signs on both north and southbound I-5 freeway exits, a large sign, courtesy Cowlitz PUD, on a pole next to our parking area, and a large banner on Kelso Drive – all to help visitors find us. With those additions and the 35th anniversary of Mount St. Helens this year, we anticipate more than 15,000 visitors this summer.
If you are reading this from a hotel or the home of friends or family members, we invite you to stop by and see our Visitor Center and pick up a coupon to one of our local restaurants or theaters. We also have guides to hiking trails, bike routes and fishing holes, and maps for Mount St. Helens, the downtown art galleries, downtown shopping, and the Lake Sacajawea arboretum, where you can find 100 species of flora. You may want to just drop by to have your photo taken with BIGFOOT, a lot of people do! That’s right, we have an 8-foot sasquatch in our Visitor Center and he loves to have his photo taken with guests.
We also have an assortment of gifts to show those back home you were here. Nothing says Longview like a Squirrel Fest hat, a Shay Locomotive T-shirt, container of Mount St. Helens ash, scented local soap or a cool Bigfoot item. So stop in and say, “Hi.”

Chamber Ambassadors – The Red CoatsChamber Ambassadors, or as we refer to them “The Red Coats,” are an integral part of the Chamber of Commerce. Ambassadors are the mainstay of Chamber volunteers. They juggle busy professional careers while making time to assist the
Chamber at a variety of events year long. Easily identified by their red blazers, you will find them meeting and greeting at our numerous events, welcoming new members at ribbon cuttings, assisting with community programs and having a great time.
To become an Ambassador, you must be an active Chamber member, and be able to make what often amounts to a significant time commitment.

The Chamber’s Education Foundation Committee develops, implements and supports programs that promote relationships between business and education. The Committee coordinates the Business and Education Awards each May, recognizing employer organizations and individuals that provide continuing education, including technology, for their employees. The event also recognizes excellence in education, specifically among teachers, administrators and support staff. Coordinating the Chamber’s scholarship program by setting criteria, selecting recipients and determining ways to help fund the program is also part of the Committee’s role, as is assisting in maintaining and strengthening the Chamber’s relationship with area education boards.

Share the Nuttiness In 2011, The Sandbaggers wanted to cre-ate a fun event nutty enough for every-one from age 2 to 1,002. That is exactly what Squirrel Fest embodies as the annual festival, this year scheduled for Aug. 15, has become Longview’s marquee, good-time, family event. The city has embraced its squirrel-friendly reputation. There are five squirrel bridges around the city, one with its own live squirrel cam.

Whether it’s the quirky, squirrel-centered; the deep, traditional heritage of the Scottish; the red, white and true celebration of independence, or the roar from
a well-polished chopper, Longview and Kelso offer family, fun for everyone.
Big Bang Longview’s GoFourth Festival touts itself as the largest, family-oriented festival in greater Cowlitz County, drawing more than 30,000 people to the shores of Lake Sacajawea for the Fourth of July celebration. Started in the 1960s, the celebration continues to grow, but always includes concerts, sporting events, the Cardboard Boat Regatta, parade and spectacular fireworks display.

Raise a GlassGrapes, Grains and Grooves says it all. The Longview Early Edition Rotary fundraiser provides guests 21 years old and older to sample local wines and craft beers while enjoying live music. Some say the event is reminiscent of the late 1990s Rainfest. Last year’s inaugural event filled the Cowlitz County Regional Conference Center and organizers are hoping to do the same again Sept. 11 and 12 this year.

Tartan TraditionEach year, the City of Kelso honors its Scottish roots with clans, kilts and bagpipes at the Highlander Festival. Tam O’Shanter Park serves as the back-drop for the festivities, which include Highland Dance Competition, Highland Games and Piping Competition and a Parade of Clans. The weekend, this year Sept. 12-13, also includes the Avenue of Clans, Scottish craft and food vendors, Scottish music and competitions, Scottish Scone Competition, the Kilted Klassic Golf Tournament and the Kirkin O’ The Tartan Sunday morning.

Color My WorldNew for this year, The Color Dash races near Three Rivers Mall Aug. 1. A family-friendly, untimed 5K where participants start white, T-shirt provided, and at each kilometer add blue, sprinkle green, splash yellow, spray orange, and finish strong in pink. Organizers promote it as the “world’s bright-est 5K.” It promises to be a colorful fundraiser for the Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce.

BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO LIVE
In 2012, Longview was rated by Forbes as one of America’s 10 prettiest towns
Longview is often called the Gateway to the Pacific. A small city of 36,000 it traces its roots back to founder R.A. Long, presi-dent of the Long-Bell Timber Company, who built a mill along the Columbia River and the city of Longview to accommodate its workers.
Rather than allow housing to spring up randomly, Long decided to build a city for the estimated 14,000 workers he would bring to the area to operate the mill.
Longview was dedicated in July 1923. Designed as a hub for business and travel routes, the town’s Civic Center features R.A. Long Park, Longview Public Library, the Monticello Hotel, and the post office and city hall.
Long’s influence and dedication to create a city to meet the needs of his employees remain evident today, and a bronze statue of him wearing his traditional straw hat, as well as the name of a park and local high school, are reminders of that vision.
Today, Longview is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base and a variety of recreational, educational and cultural offerings. Ideally situated on Interstate 5, Longview sits between Seattle and Portland, rests between the banks of the Columbia and Cowlitz rivers and is 90-minutes from the Pacific Ocean or the Cascade Mountains. And, even with its diminished size, Mount St. Helens still looms large in the area and can be easily seen from the city on a clear day.

A Flair for FlavorThere’s something for every taste in Downtown Longview. Thinking pizza, you can have wood-fired. Fishing for something seaworthy, try one of the many restaurants serving up the catch of the day. Gourmet burgers, you bet. Satisfy a sweet tooth with ice cream, cupcakes and specialty confections.
Shop ‘til You DropThe perfect prescription for retail therapy awaits shoppers in Downtown Longview. In the Vintage District more than a dozen antique, collectible and second-hand stores await treasure hunters, intertwined with art galleries, speciality shops, home furnishings – there’s even a store filled with board games and handmade soaps.

Wander Through HistoryStroll through Longview’s history by head-ing downtown to R.A. Long Park and Civic Circle. Eventually named for the city found-er, R.A. Long Park is a National Register Historic District. The park was designed to be the center of the city. Its roads extend out from the circle with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the United States Post Office. Each building showcas-ing its original architecture and character from the 1920s. Surprise! Surprise! Inside Civic Circle is a piece of Plymouth Rock, a sundial and a number of memorials. Don’t forget to check out the Chief Lelooska totem pole that welcomes visitors as well. A few blocks in any direction and there’s more to see like the Monticello Convention Site on Tennant Way where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon at the Columbia River form-ing the Washington Territory, later Wash-ington State. Wander off between Kes-sler Boulevard and the Hotel Monticello toward the Old West Side to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by world-renown architects for the movers and shakers during the birth of Longview. Also on Kessler at Washington Way sits the grand Community Church, on the city’s historic register. Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles that keep watch from their perches, and the beautiful stained glass.
Nutty NarrowsBuilt in 1963 by the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a local landmark and listed on the city’s historic register. Peters constructed the structure, which stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Center Circle, to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy thoroughfare. The original 60-foot bridge was built from alumi-num and fire hose. In 1983, the bridge was spruced up and rededicated. It is now one of five in the city and the focal point for the Squirrel Fest celebration. After Peters’ death, a 10-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge.
Back on TrackIn 1997, John Chilson and Jeff Wilson began restoring the Shay Locomotive outside the Longview Public Library. It took the two volunteers and a host of others from ILWU Local No. 21 more than 2,000 hours to steam the 40-ton engine back to life. The Shay Loco-motive hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when logging trucks became the preferred method of movement. The Long-Bell Lumber Co., which founded Longview in the 1920s, donated the locomotive to the city in 1956. Over time it became rusted and vandalized, but thanks to the volunteer effort and funding from businesses, grants and personal donations it has been restored and a pavilion to protect the precious piece of history is on its way.
FOUNTAIN ADDITIONThe Koelsch family has donated a fountain to the city of Longview for R.A. Long Park. Its design follows the outline of the Civic Circle historic buildings. Special lighting will showcase the water feature for day and night. Completion is set for late this summer.

Known as the City of Friendly People, Kelso is a thriving and grow-ing community of about 12,000 in the city, and another 85,000 in Cowlitz County. Another 20,000 residents reside in Wahkiakum and south Lewis counties in Washington and Columbia County in Oregon, who are part of the Kelso community.
Surveyor Peter Crawford named the city after his homeland in Kelso, Scotland. In honor, Kelso also has an official tartan and hosts the Highlander Festival each year.
The city’s Scottish heritage can also be found at Tam O’Shanter Park, which hosts the Highlander Festival each year. Kelso also serves as base camp for Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
Kelso is 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon, 125 miles south of Seattle and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Its location and proximity to the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia rivers also draw people to it for business, recreation and tourism.

In MotionKelso is the area’s transportation hub. Convenient-
ly located only a half mile to Interstate 5, sits the Southwest Washington Regional Airport. The airport started as a grass landing strip on a dairy farm, approximately 109 acres of land that is now owned by the City of Kelso. Downtown Kelso is also home to an Amtrak station. The Kelso Train Depot, origi-nally built in 1911 as part of Burlington Northern, has underwent extensive renovations to become the re-gion’s first multimodal transportation facility. Fancy words meaning it serves as a center for several modes of transportation. Part of the “multi” modal transportation service includes bus. Kelso is served by Greyhound Bus Lines, which provides bus service all around the nation, and RiverCities Transit, which provides local service for Longview and Kelso.
The city at the center of it all! Kelso serves as the base camp for Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and a host of other recreational
activities. It is the hub for anyone seeking culture, adventure or relaxation.
Mosey Through the MuseumDescribed
as a fact-filled repository of early life in southwest Washington, the Cowlitz County His-torical Muse-um maintains an extensive collection of photos, artifacts, and books documenting the history of our county. Founded in 1949, it is the place to discover how the land and rivers of Cowlitz County have shaped the lives of people for hun-dreds of years.

The Crown JewelLongview’s Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors alike. Developed in 1924, the park today serves as the centerpiece for the city. Those with an active lifestyle flock to it to walk, jog and bike on the 3.5 miles of trails which meander across landscaped bridges, through gardens of trees and flowers, and past two spectacular fountains. The park offers the Frank Willis Arboretum, with more than 100 species, the beautiful Japanese Garden, created to replicate those former Longview Parks Superintendent Al George saw in the Navy, and the educational Solar System Walk. There’s kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking. Children, or those young at heart, can enjoy two playgrounds. There are concerts at the lake on summer evenings.
www.mylongview.com
Contemplation, recreation, exhilaration – our parks offer it all. Stroll along the shores of Lake Sacajawea. Watch a ball game at Rister Stadium or
Heerensperger Field. Let the kids cool off at Catlin Spray Park.
Serene ShorelineLocated one mile off Interstate 5, Gerhart Gardens Park is easy on the mind. The river plays a key role in the park’s popularity. Soak in the beautiful scenery by boat, there’s a convenient launch, walk along the shore, or set up a picnic under a shady tree. Cast a line, either by land or water, both are quite acceptable. Need more action? The 14 acres also includes basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and a playground. And don’t forget Rover, let the pooch out of the car to stretch his legs at the, fenced, off-leash dog park.
Recreation MeccaThe year-round recreational opportunities at Tam O’Shanter Park are endless with 38 acres of playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking paths and sports fields (baseball, softball and soccer). Located near Kelso High School, Tam O’Shanter has become a regional and national destination for tournament team sports, bringing thousands to compete at the state-of-the-art complex each year at Rister Stadium for baseball, Heerensperger Field for softball, as well as the parks eight other fields, basketball court, and horseshoe pits. The park’s trail system edges the river and is dotted with 30 picnic areas. Tam O’Shanter also welcomes clans and caber tossers as the host site for Kelso’s annual Highlander Festival in September.

This par-71 championship course plays 6,432 yards from the back tees. The greens are fast and in excellent condition. Mint Valley also has a six-hole, par-3 course with holes ranging in distance from 50 to 90 yards to fine tune your short game or introduce the game to beginners.

Standing the Test of TimeFour sets of tees at the Longview Country Club offer plenty of playability for golfers of all skill levels. And don’t be fooled by the yardage. Ranging from 5,200 to 6,215 yards this ‘old school’ course with its lush, tree-lined fairways, its small, fast sloping greens, and its demanding par 3s serves up plenty of challenges for even the best golfers. Opened in 1927, Longview Country Club’s well-manicured fairways overlook downtown Longview with glimpses of the Columbia River and valley.

Built on a base of silt and sand from the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, Three Rivers Golf Course provides year-round play, while Mint Valley, named for the 120 acres of mint fields that once stood there, is a refreshing respite, and Longview
Country Club has a long history of excellence.

Two years after the 1980 eruption, Mount St. Helens was left to recover naturally and the National Volcanic Monument was created. Decades later the gray, barren
landscape flourishes and visitors can hike, study and enjoy the scenery.
Mountain JoyBreathtaking viewpoints and miles of trails have been created to explore Mount St. Helens by car and foot. During the summer Forest Service interpreters lead a wide range of activities like short walks and amphitheater presentations. Adventurers can climb – 4,500 feet of elevation in five miles – or explore from the air with a helicopter tour. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails are available. In many cases only enthusiasm is necessary, in others a permit is required.

35 YearsThis year marks the 35th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens. It was at 8:32 Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, when Mount St. Helens roared to life, blowing down or scorching 230 square miles of forest and killing 57 people. The eruption included a 5.1 earthquake that caused a massive landslide and lateral blast that swept through the Toutle River Valley and removed 1,306 feet from the top of the volcano.

All Art, All the TimeThe Rose Center for the Arts at Lower Columbia College of-fers a full program of events, and features a 500-seat audito-rium considered the best hall for music performance in southwest Washington. Fir and cherry wood paneling enhance the aesthetics and acoustics, along with state of the art sound systems and lighting that all enhance the experience. The center hosts an art gallery, as well as a multitude of college and community musical and theatrical performances and lectures.

Grab a ShowThe historic Columbia Theatre opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped what would have been a tragic ending in 1980 when excavation and demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with the cleanup following the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the interim, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the vibrant 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and children’s theatre. The theater earned a Historical Preservation Officers Award from Washington state for outstanding achievement in historic preservation. Its counterpart is the Kelso Theater Pub/Backstage Cafe. The historic theater in downtown Kelso hosts a variety of movies, music, art and public events.

Head For the HillsFor something close, Longview’s Cloney Park also includes a BMX trail. If you’re looking to crank it up a notch, then head to the hills, south side of Mount St. Helens to be specific, for some of the Northwest’s premier moun-tain biking treks. Our sources point to Siouxon Creek, Lewis River, South Coldwater and Falls Creek. The Ape Canyon ride, which begins on the south side of Mount St. Helens, we understand is one of the Northwest’s premier mountain biking outings. The Three Riv-ers Cycling Club has assem-bled a list of 24 area rides of varying degrees of challenge. www.threeriverscycling.com

Catch of the DayWord is fishing for fall chinook on the Columbia River should be good this summer and fall. The Columbia River fall chinook could be the third largest return on record since 1938. The Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reser-voir, tiger muskies and Coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir. Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the city of Longview, has trout. Silver Lake has bass. Crappie, bluegill, catfish and perch. Rainbow trout are planted in the spring. If the fishing is good, you might also snap yellow perch, bluegill sunfish, brown bullhead, and both black crappie and white crappie. Check the Fishing in Washington regulations pam-phlet for limits and size requirements. Don't forget a fishing license.

Monkey AroundThe kids will go ape over these lava tubes. Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lave tube in the conti-nental United States, 12,810 feet. The operative word here is cave, please wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket and carry a flashlight. Opt for either the easier route or head uphill for the longer adventure, a mile-plus climb over large boul-ders. Information, lantern rentals and guided tours are available at the Apes headquarters from early July through Labor Day. Find the latest sasquatch sighting on the Big Foot Research Organization website. Interested in how many there have been and where.

Hike to the mountain tops and watch the sunrise. Pop your tent under a canopy of stars. Feel the wind whip across you face as you
whiz through the tree tops of our forests.
AdventureThere’s always hiking, biking and fishing for outdoor adventure, but have you tried geocaching? It’s a treasure hunt using GPS-enabled devices. Speaking of hidden treasure, why not spend the day prospecting. Take a chance at striking it rich by panning for gold in a local river and creek. Many in the area have varying amounts of gold, platinum, and other minerals. Bob’s Sporting Goods or Fire Mountain Prospectors can provide information to get started. Whiz through the forest on a zip line with Treehouse Island Zip Line Adventures. Zip lines are a pulley suspended on a cable that speed you from the top of a hill to the bottom. Climb Mount St. Helens. Late spring through early fall is the most popular season.
Road TripThere are dozens of places in the area to pitch a tent or pull in an RV in Cowlitz, Pacific, Wahkia-kum, Lewis, Clark and Skamania county. But three with close proximity to Longview and Kelso come to mind. County Line Park on Ocean Beach Highway, just west of Longview, Brookhollow RV Park and Cedars RV Park. Seaquest State Park is a 475-acre, year-round camping park near Mount St. Helens. The beautifully forested park, with large secondary old growth trees, is situated off Spirit Lake Highway across from Silver Lake and the Mount St. Helens visitor center. Down the road in Woodland there’s, aptly named, Columbia Riverfront RV Park, and also the new Toutle River RV Resort. In addition to the Chamber of Commerce, a good source of information about area campgrounds can be found on the Good Sam RV Travel Guide and Campground Directory.

There will be grandstand entertainment, free entertainment, a professional rodeo, carnival, youth market sale, food, vendors, FFA and 4H exhibits and much, much more. Admission is free all day, every day. Bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie down roping, steer wrestling, break away roping, barrel racing, and bull riding –whew! that’s a whole lot of excitement and entertainment in one arena, but that’s what you’ll find at the Thunder Mountain Pro Rodeo July 23-25.
