It has been truly an honor to have served as your 2015 Chairman of the Board of the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber. I would like to thank my hard working Board of Directors, staff and Embajadores for their commitment. Most importantly, I would like to thank the membership for your continuing support and input throughout the year. I would urge ALL members to continue to stay engaged and support the mission of this Chamber through the coming years.

As we start our journey into the final months of the year, I want to take a minute to recap what we have accomplished together. Your Chamber participated in hosting various sold-out events throughout the year including this year’s State of the County Address featuring the honorable Judge Loyd Neal. This luncheon included a review of the County’s accomplishments for the past year, and a forecast by Judge Neal of upcoming projects for the County. Also, your CCHCC hosted this year’s State of the Port featuring Chairwoman Judy Hawley. During the luncheon Chairwoman Hawley shared a vision of how the Port is moving forward to channel the future for growth in the Coastal Bend. The Port serves a vital economic interest in this community, and we at the CCHCC feel honored to be included in its vision.

In June, your Chamber held a “Mi Casa Es Su Casa” event honoring hard working community volunteer Diane LaRue.Board member Barbara Canales graciously opened her home to all the Beautiful Ladies in Corpus Christi to helpmake this a success.

This year your Chamber sponsored the 16 de Septiembre Festival, with over 2,000 people in attendance that helped to celebrate our Hispanic Heritage. A Big Thanks to the world renowned Corpus Christi Mustangs who prepared and served a full course rib dinner to help us raise funds for the Mano a Mano Scholarship program. Together with the educational partnership of the Corpus Christi City Employees Credit Union, TAMUCC, TAMUK and Del Mar College we were able to award 13 scholarships of $2000 each to area students. This growing and successful partnership could not have been possible without the efforts of Past Chairman John Valls and the President of the Corpus Christi City Employee Credit Union, David L. Brooks. This is a significant $50,000 investment over a five year period.

Consistent with our planning, we moved into OUR new Hispanic Chamber office at 1823 N. Chaparral. This arduous renovation project has been completed in large part due to the efforts of Board members Eric Villarreal and Philip Ramirez. I am proud to announce that we were able to do this all through our operating capital. Please take advantage and visit this restored facility.

With perseverance your Hispanic Chamber Board has worked this year to strengthen our existing relationships thus providing more value to our members and creating new partnerships.

I look forward to your support this December in welcoming back to Corpus Christi our own Eva Longoria. The Legacy Award Luncheon will also honor our Corporation of the Year and Small Business of the Year. It will be held on December 9, 2015 at the Ortiz Center. Make plans to attend and bring a friend. Dr. Gilda E. Ramirez was the director of the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center (Garcia Center) between August 2012 and August 2014 under the management of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. After being employed at Texas A&M University for 25 years and a total of 32 years with the State of Texas, Dr. Ramirez retired in August 2014 to explore and pursue other career opportunities in the nonprofit and business sector.

Ramirez graduated from Corpus Christi State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with highest honors in 1992. She earned a Master in Public Administration in 1993 and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2002, both from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi.

Ramirez joined TAMUCC in 1989 and has more than 20 years of experience in fiscal and personnel management, grant writing, program administration, and in success initiatives to prepare the future workforce. She taught since 1999 at the undergraduate and doctoral level, working with students from culturally diverse backgrounds teaching community leadership development, ethics in the workplace and other coursework. Since 2006, she managed over $5 million in grant funding and directed programs to prepare students from high-need, underserved communities and neighborhoods for success in the future workforce. Dr. Ramirez was project manager for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board funded AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Higher Education Research Project and was awarded $275,000 between 2012 & 2014 for faculty and student professional development and for student tutor/mentor wages.

Ramirez is completing her third year as President of the Westside Business Association (WBA). Now in its 36th year, WBA’s mission is to promote educational and economic development and the cultural history of Corpus Christi. Because of her interest in community revitalization and empowering individuals to work towards gainful employment, Dr. Ramirez served on the City of Corpus Christi Central Business Development Plan, and is currently serving on the Citizens Advisory Committee on the Comprehensive Plan 2035 Corpus Christi and the Downtown Area Development Plan (DADP) Advisory Committees. In 2013, Dr. Ramirez wrote and was awarded a 2013-2014 CITGO Hands for Hillcrest grant for the Westside Business Association to implement a Life Enhancement and Academic Direction (LEAD) program with youth and families in the Hillcrest community.

As director of the Garcia Center, Ramirez coordinated services and served as liaison to the community, including businesses, families, schools and government agencies. Programming included health and wellness education, arts, cultural programs, literacy instruction, and counseling. The Garcia Center with an annual attendance of nearly 20,000 is a key element of outreach for TAMUCC and the College of Education, connecting community members with the extensive and unique resources of the university while enabling training and research for university students and professors who carry out projects at the Center.

In addition to her work with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the Westside Business Association, Ramirez is a member on Community Advisory Council for the Junior League of Corpus Christi, the Advisory Steering Committee for the Coastal Bend Business Plan Competition, and Education Chair for the Corpus Christi Chapter of Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas. She is a Leadership Corpus Christi Class 39 Alumni, board member with Beautify Corpus Christi Association, member on the Planning and Network Advisory Committee for the Behavioral Health Center of Nueces County and of Grow Local South Texas.

Ramirez’ awards include TAMUCC Employee Excellence Award (1996-97), TAMUCC Outstanding Alumni Award in 2008, a Levy Foundation scholarship by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) in 2012, Junior Chamber of the Coastal Bend’s 2013 Woman Warrior Award, 2014 Outstanding Community Leaders Award from The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council One, Estrella de Tejas 2014 from the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas, representing the Corpus Christi Chapter, 2015 Small Business Administration Minority Small Business Champion of the Year for the South Region and Corpus Christi Branch, and the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 2015 Dora Cervera Mirabal Award. Ramirez has been a single parent for the last 26 years. She has a son, Miguel C. Terrazas, a daughter, Victoria Terrazas-Purinton, and five grandchildren.

EVA LONGORIA is a Golden Globe-nominated, Screen Actors Guild- and ALMA Award-winning actress, producer, director, entrepreneur, philanthropist and “Desperate Housewives” alum. Her greatest work is as a champion of women, the Latino community and youth with special needs. She established The Eva Longoria Foundation to help Latinas build better futures for themselves and their families through education and entrepreneurship. Foundation programs help Latinas achieve their full potential through parent engagement, mentorship, extracurricular participation, STEM education, microloans and other high-potential interventions.

Longoria has spoken about her Foundation’s work before the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, the Clinton Global Initiative, Women in the World Texas and the National Council de la Raza, among others. Longoria wrote an essay about ELF’s work and Latina issues in the Shriver Report, a multiplatform study of the profound change in the makeup and reality of American families and the failure of government, business and other cultural institutions to adapt to this change and deal with it. Longoria also posts regularly about ELF’s work to her 7.3M Twitter fans and 5.4M Facebook followers.

In addition to her Foundation, Longoria co-founded Eva’s Heroes in 2006. Eva’s Heroes enriches the lives of those with intellectual special needs by providing an inclusive setting built on the four tenets of interact, grow, learn and love. Based in San Antonio, the organization helps teens and young adults with intellectual special needs to integrate into and flourish in society. Eva’s Heroes offers unique opportunities for these young men and women that they may not be able to experience elsewhere. To date, Longoria has helped raise more than $2.1M for the organization.

Longoria is also the spokesperson for Padres Contra el Cancer, a nonprofit organization that is committed to improving the quality of life for Latino children with cancer and their families. Padres is the only Latino program in the United States that is focused on addressing the needs of the entire family. Since becoming a spokesperson 10 years ago, Longoria has helped raise more than $7M through her participation as the Chair of “El Sue–o de la Esperanza” gala, personal contributions and other special campaigns. Her participation in PADRES Galas has helped raise over $4.5M through corporate sponsorships with large corporations, such as Farmer’s Insurance and Verizon Wireless. Longoria has actively participated in special campaigns that have raised over $1M, and another $1M was secured from her personal corporate connections, which include Bebe clothing, Pepsi and Nickelodeon.

Longoria was named “Philanthropist of the Year” by The Hollywood Reporter and honored by Variety with a Lifetime Achievement Award for their Power of Women issue.

Longoria has received countless other awards for her philanthropy and activism including: the prestigious Dorothy I. Height Racial Justice Award by the YWCA USA; the Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award from the Women in Film during their annual Crystal + Lucy Awards; the National Hispanic Foundation for the Art’s Horizon Award, presented each year to the individual whose work most advances the presence of Latinos in television and/or film; The Latina Visionary and Community Empowerment Award by the Hispanic Women’s Corporation at their 21st National Hispanic Women’s Conference; the Texas Medal of Arts Multimedia Award from the Texas Cultural trust Council; and the NHLI Mujer/Chair Award, presented to her by the National Hispana Leadership Institute for her significant contributions to the empowerment and well being of the Hispanic community. The Larry King Cardiac Foundation, in partnership with the American Heart Association, also presented her with the Corazones Unidos Award for her philanthropic efforts. She was honored with the Hope of Los Angeles Award by the mayor of Los Angeles, as well as the Cesar Chavez Legacy Award by the Cesar Chavez Foundation. Longoria was honored as the Top Hispanic Leader by Hispanic Executive Magazine. She was also honored by Girls, Inc. Los Angeles on behalf of her outstanding achievements in entertainment and philanthropy and for inspiring girls to realize their full potential.

A pillar in the Latino community, Longoria has executive produced and hosted the National Council of La Raza ALMA Awards for the past eight years. Longoria also executive produced, in collaboration with Academy Award nominated Shine Global, the documentary HARVEST, which focuses on the plight of the estimated 500,000 child farm workers whose tireless efforts help feed America. Longoria executive produced her second documentary, FOOD CHAINS, a film that also exposes the current and historic exploitation of farm workers, including stunning revelations that thousands of laborers in our nation’s fields are held as modern day slaves. The film had its US premiere at the 2014 TriBeCa Film Festival and was picked up for distribution by Screen Media. Longoria is currently producing her third documentary, OUR TIME, which explores the power of the Latino vote. Longoria was also instrumental in the 2012 Presidential campaign, as she helped President Obama receive 73% of the Latino vote. At the 2015 TriBeCa Film Festival, Longoria premiered “Go, Sebastian, Go!”, a short documentary that is part of the ESPN documentary series “Versus,” which she executive produced.

Additionally, Longoria received her Master’s degree in Chicano Studies from California State University, Northridge, writing her thesis on “Success STEMS from Diversity: The Value of Latinas in STEM Careers.”

Eddie L. Garcia, a 30-year member of the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, a Masterís degree in Business Administration and a Chartered Life Underwriter from The American College. He brings a wide range of experience as a small business owner and community leader advocating, promoting and facilitating the success of small, minority and women owned businesses in the Coastal Bend. He has been a small businessman in the community for the last 37 years and in the last 25 years, he has worked as a New York Life agent working with the small business owners to help provide executive benefits and tax deferred retirement options as well as employee benefits.

Mr. Garcia is the past President of the Corpus Christi Rotary Club, Nueces County A&M Club, Texas State Aquarium and the United Married Couple Club. He has served as Chairman of the Buccaneer Commission. Mr. Garcia has also served as a Texas A&M University Chancellor’s Century member, and has served for the Corpus Christi Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, the Coastal Bend Association of Health Underwriters and the Million Dollar Table, Life and Qualifying Member. Mr. Garcia also serves as a Corpus Christi Mustang.

Mr. Garcia served in the U.S. Navy from 1970-1973 and is the recipient of the Combat Action, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign and National Defense Ribbon. Mr. Garcia has been a member of the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church for 37 years. He and his wife Berta, married 42 years, have three daughters Rebecca, Rosella, and Rubiana.

A fifth generation Corpus Christian, Rosie Gonzalez Collin is the Director of Community Relations for Port Corpus Christi. Rosie holds a Bachelor of Science from Texas State University and a Master of Science, Curriculum and Instruction, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. She is the former President & CEO of the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and was a Texas educator for 29 years as a secondary English, ESL & Speech teacher.

Rosie was appointed by Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and Governor Rick Perry to the Office of Small Business Advisory Task Force in 2014 and currently serves as a Board of Trustee of Corpus Christi Medical Center and Del Mar Foundation. She also serves as a Board Member of the Westside Business Association, Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend and sits on the Corpus Christi Caller-Times Hispanic Advisory Board and is actively involved in the NAACP. Collin and her family are dedicated supporters of Special Olympics , the Miracle League and Providence Place in San Antonio, Texas.

Rosie was named the 2015 Superhero by the Young Business Professionals and is the recipient of the CITGO Presidential Award, “Las Estrella,” Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas, Del Mar College: Outstanding Alumni, Incarnate Word Academy: Distinguished Alumni, and Outstanding Citizen, United Married Couples Club.

The daughter of the late Arnold and Virginia Galvan Gonzalez, Rosie is married to Augustin V. Collin and is the proud mother of Louie Garza, Andrea (Dwayne) Hofstetter and Jay Collin. The Collin’s have two grandchildren: Melanie Rose and Trace Dwayne Hofstetter.

Eric Villarreal, P.E. graduated from Orange Grove High School and attended Texas A&M University in College Station where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Eric returned to the Coastal Bend shortly thereafter and is currently a Principal and Vice President for LNV, Inc. Mr. Villarreal has over 15 years of experience in civil engineering and specializes in the design of water distribution, wastewater collection, and storm water drainage systems.

Over the years, Mr. Villarreal has dedicated his time, efforts and resources to many organizations. He currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the City of Corpus Christi’s Planning Commission and has served on the Transportation Advisory Committee as well as the Landmark Commission. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Mr. Villarreal is an Associate Commissioner with the Buccaneer Commission. Mr. Villarreal is a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi Class XL and was honored by Corpus Christi Under 40 in 2012.

In addition to his extracurricular business volunteering, Mr. Villarreal has also volunteered to support our local youth by coaching for the Upward Basketball League. Mr. Villarreal serves as the Vice-President of the Texas A&M Hispanic Network and volunteers as an Aggie Ambassador working to encourage local youth to attend Texas A&M University.

Eric is married to his high school sweetheart, Natalie C. Villarreal, and is the proud father of Ezra, Eli, and Carmen.

Carmen Arias is a lifelong resident of Corpus Christi. She graduated from Foy H. Moody High School and received her Bachelors of Arts & Science from Corpus Christi University and Masters of Science degree from Texas A&M-CC. Carmen has worked primarily in the marketing field for most of her career, more specifically in healthcare marketing. Her most rewarding career accomplishments have been while working with her present employer Radiology Associates. Radiology Associates has given her the autonomy needed to help educate women regarding breast cancer awareness, by allowing her to be creative and use unique ideas and concepts to help educate women regarding this disease. Carmen has won several local and national awards for her creativity and marketing. She feels very strongly that women hold the key to their own survival and is a fervent believer in being proactive in one’s own health. Carmen has served on several boards including Regional Transportation Authority, Westside Business Association (past president), and Senior Community Services to name a few. She is currently a member of Executive Women’s International, Westside Business Association and on the Executive Board (Secretary) of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Arias has earned several awards and distinctions including WBA Advocate of the Year, Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas Estrella Award, and the Caller Times Healthcare Hero Award. She is also a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi XXIV.

Carmen is married to Arnold Arias (39 years), and has two children, Jacob, and Chanel and one very spoiled Chihuahua, Sophie.

John Valls holds a very unique skill set from a wide array of industries that includes maritime, aviation, economic development, wind energy and public transit. He has a proven track record of business development, public relations, and public policy making.

As a consultant, John assists small cities as a Consultant Administrator or project manager focusing on economic development initiatives, infrastructure issues, grant writing, government and public affairs. Prior to starting his own consulting practice, John served as General Cargo Manager and formerly as the Marketing Manager for the Port of Corpus Christi. During his tenure with the port, he served as Chairman of the American Association of Port Authority’s Public Relations Committee at the national level.

John has served as an adjunct professor at Del Mar College, The University of the Incarnate Word, and Park University-NAS instructing in the areas of Marketing and Management. He has served his community on numerous boards such as the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Del Mar College Foundation, Chairman of the Leadership Corpus Christi Alumni Association, a member of LCC Class 28, General Chair of LCC Class 33, Chairman of the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority and has served as Chairman of the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He is Chairman of the Corpus Christi City Employees Credit Union and is a board member of the Nueces County Appraisal District.

John holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing from Sam Houston State University and an MBA from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He is married to Dr. Crystal Campos Valls and they have a son J.J. and a daughter Mia.

Prior to being elected to the 13th Court of Appeals, Justice Perkes practiced appellate, litigation and contract law for 20+ years in the Coastal Bend. He is board certified in civil appellate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and St. Mary’s University School of Law.In the legal profession, he serves on the Boards of the Corpus Christi and Hidalgo County Bar Associations. His statewide judicial activities include service to the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, State Bar, and Texas Center for the Judiciary.

Active in the community, he devotes time to several organizations including Boy Scouts, Leadership Corpus Christi, Rotary, Mustangs and Bucuraders. He also has volunteered for the City of Corpus Christi, Flint Hill Resources, and Corpus Christi Symphony.

Professional awards and distinctions include the S.B.A./S.B.D.C. “Small Business Champion” Award, the Judge Paul W. Nye Professionalism Award, and the Paul Harris Fttellow.

Justice Perkes was born in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised in McAllen, TX. He is married to Rachel Barchus Perkes, and they have two sons, Andrew and Christopher.

Tom Becquet was born in Woodward, Oklahoma. After living in several different states, attending three different high schools in three different states, he graduated from Beaverton High School in Beaverton Oregon in 1980. As of 1981, Mr. Becquet is proud to call Corpus Christi hispermanent home.

Tom began a 13 year career with Whataburger Restaurants, working his way up the ladder to General Manager. The extensive training and experience gained in the restaurant and customer service industry enabled Tom to venture his career forward. In September of 1994, Mr. Becquet, along with four other partners, formed Coastal Deli Inc., dba Jason’s Deli. On March 27, 1995, the first Jason’s Deli was opened in Corpus Christi. Fast forward eighteen years, Coastal Deli Inc. has 13 delis in eight different cities and are currently responsible for employing over 800 team members. He currently serves as Owner and Director of Training.

In addition to serving on the 2013 Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Mr. Becquet is a long time member of St. Pius X Church and previously invested five years furthering the mission of the Buccaneer Commission.

BarBara canaLES Port Corpus Christi

Barbara Canales was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. She graduated from Ray High School as valedictorian, and earned a full academic scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. Barbara also received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Houston. Barbara moved back to her hometown of Corpus Christi and has been involved in commercial real estate, oil and gas exploration and production and in the practice of law.

Barbara was the recipient of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas Las Estrellas Award, the Outstanding Young Engineer Award from the University of Texas at Austin and the President’s Award from the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She has been recognized by LULAC, the Girl Scouts in their Hall of Honor and by the Nueces Democratic Party among others. Barbara has served on numerous community boards in South Texas including the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Foundation Board, the Coastal Bend Community Foundation Board, the Bishop’s Guild, the University Of Texas Board of Texas Marine Science Advisory Board, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, the University of Texas Board of College of Engineering, the University of Texas at Austin Development Board, Texas A&M Corpus Christi Foundation Board and VICTORY (a division of the American Cancer Society). Currently Barbara sits on the Advisory Board of EFCREO at Texas A&M Kingsville as well as on the Advisory Board of Education is Our Freedom Scholarship Board.

In January 2014, Barbara was re-appointed by the Nueces County Commissioner’s Court to serve a three year term as a Port of Corpus Christi Commissioner. On the Commission, Barbara serves on the Audit, Security, and Asset Management Committees. Barbara is a mother of five children: Caroline, David, Natalie, Daniel, and Jacqueline. Inspired by her daughter, Jackie, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January of 2006, she founded the Ready or Not Foundation. Through matching grants, the foundation has proudly raised $2.5 million dollars contributed directly to pediatric brain cancer research. As the President of the Ready or Not Foundation, Barbara remains an advocate and guest speaker for cancer research and has served on statewide and national advocacy committees. Barbara currently resides in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Dr. Luis Cifuentes earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in Chemistry from Swarthmore College, an M.S. degree in Marine Studies, and a Ph.D. degree in Oceanography, both from the University of Delaware. He began his career with Texas A&M University in 1988 as an assistant professor of oceanography and proceeded through the ranks to full professor. Beginning in November 2004 and again in March 2009, Dr. Cifuentes served as Executive Associate Dean and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Geosciences and in July 2007, assumed the position of Interim Vice Provost for the University. In 2009, Dr. Cifuentes was heavily involved with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. On September 1, 2010, Dr. Cifuentes became the Associate Vice President for Research and Scholarly Activity and Dean of Graduate Studies at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. He was promoted to Vice President for Research, Commercialization, and Outreach on September 1, 2012. He assumed the position of interim director of the Lone Star UAS Center of Excellence and Innovation through August 2015. He served as interim director of the Lone Star UAS Center of Excellence and Innovation, which is one of only six FAA UAS test sites.

Dr. Cifuentes has taught oceanography courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level at Texas A&M. He serves as PI on a NSF research coordination network (RCN) grant - Climate, Energy, Environment and Engagement in Semiarid Regions (CE3SAR) - that will build a research network in South Texas aggregating regional research capacities specific to sustainability in semiarid climates contiguous to the Gulf of Mexico.

Dr. Cifuentes and his wife, Lauren, a professor of Educational Psychology, reside in Corpus Christi and have three children.

Larry R. Elizondo, Sr. always has considered it a privilege and a responsibility to serve the people of Corpus Christi. A valued leader both in the community and in his company, Elizondo has accomplished many professional accolades, such as successfully managing more than $668 million of public funds as well as maintaining an outstanding record—all while serving the largest employer in Corpus Christi. Elizondo uses his skills as an adept negotiator and critical thinker, coupled with his extensive knowledge of industry and government regulations, to serve the citizens of Corpus Christi in innumerable capacities, among them educational initiatives and health campaigns.

Elizondo believes education is the key to empowering our community and developing a strong and extraordinary workforce. While serving as President and then Vice-President on the Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) School Board, Elizondo accounted for a $566 million budget. He also served as Corpus Christi City Councilman District 5 for three terms. Not to mention, Elizondo spent two terms as chairman of the Port Industries Government & Public Affairs Committee. He was a member of the Municipal Court Committee, the Administrative Committee and the Government and Public Affairs Committee.

As a staunch community advocate, Elizondo has devoted time to countless organizations, including the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Del Mar College Foundation, USS Lexington Museum and Coastal Ben Community Blood Center, to name only a few.

A true servant leader, Elizondo served in the United States Marine Corps Reserved from 1978 to 1984. Today in his incarnation as Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, Refining G&PA and Legislative Affairs at CITGO Corpus Christi, Elizondo selflessly and continually has provided leadership to more than 5,300 employees. At CITGO Corpus Christi, Elizondo has worked in various supervisory roles—among them, Maintenance Planner, Process Shift Supervisor, Program Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Planning Specialist and Turn Around Manager. Elizondo also is certified as a Terminal Operation Technician.

Perhaps his proudest role, however, is family man. Elizondo is husband to Annabelle Gutierrez Elizondo, father to Larry, Jr. (Robin) Elizondo, and Jessica Elizondo, and grandfather to Ana Christina Elizondo and Larry Elizondo, III.

Alex Garcia was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. His first day of work began at age 11 and by age 15 managed his first Store and while owning his first business (a laundry mat) at age 16.  Alex is a graduate, Mary Carroll, Del Mar College (AA) and University of Houston (BBA). He is married to Bertha Garcia, for 36 “GREAT” years, has five wonderful children and five beautiful Grand Children. Having been raised in the grocery store business he did not hesitate to act when he was afforded an opportunity to become self-employed, immediately accepting the challenge, moving his young family and purchasing his first Supermarket.  Alex and his wife successfully operated all facets including a meat market, produce and grocery departments of a neighborhood supermarket. During this period we were able to maintain a profitable business regardless of challenges and competition also owning he a restaurant, four neighborhood grocery stores, a storage facility and co-owner of a advertising agency.  Since selling his businesses in 2006, Alex has had a diverse career working for Unique Staffing Staff Leasing, Store Manager for Wal*Mart Super Center, Food Director H.E.B Plus, Commercial Lender for ValueBank Texas and Direct Marketing Manager for Mike Shaw Toyota. Regina Garcia is the Public Affairs Sr. Manager for H-E-B in the Gulf Coast Region. Prior to being appointed as manager of public affairs, Garcia served as Communications Manager for the Corpus Christi Convention & Visitors Bureau. Regina has a long history in public affairs and broadcasting circles in Corpus Christi, starting her career as a general news reporter for KZTV and KRIS-TV before moving on to a news anchor at KIII-TV. She has also served as Public Relations Director for Driscoll Children’s Hospital, where she coordinated media relations and community events for all major marketing projects. As Public Information Officer for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Garcia handled all media relations activities. After her tenure at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Garcia returned to KIII-TV to serve as a general reporter and anchor. During this time, she served as the station’s spokesperson for their “Be Safe from Diabetes” campaign that impacted thousands of families.

Regina has been the recipient of the Readers’ Choice “Best of the Best” News Anchor award and has served as a member of several Corpus Christi area Board of Directors. Among the highlights of serving the community, The Rise School of Corpus Christi, Catholic Charities, Ronald McDonald House and working with local churches in the community including St. Pius X Catholic School and St. Philips Catholic Church. In addition, she was recognized in the Corpus Christi “40 under 40” program for three years, which honors individuals under the age of 40 who have excelled professionally in the Corpus Christi community. In addition, Garcia served on the organization’s steering committee for two years. She was also recognized as one of Ready or Not Foundation’s “Best Dressed” for her efforts in giving back to the community. The foundation supports research for pediatric brain cancer.

Fernando (Fred) Segundo has served as the Director of Aviation at the Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA) since November 2007. Prior to his present position at CCIA, he served as the Assistant Director of Aviation at the McAllen Miller International Airport. He served 21-years in the United States Marine Corps where he held a variety of aviation management and leadership positions including Airfield Service Officer, Director of Airfield Fire & Emergency Services, and Crisis Management Response Liaison.

Fred has a Master of Business Administration from Webster University, a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University, and an Associate of Arts from National University. A native of the Coastal Bend, Mr. Ramirez began working for the firm while attending Gregory-Portland High School. Upon earning his degree from the University of Texas at Austin, he returned home to work full time with the firm and is currently responsible for all design work and oversees many of the day-to-day operations of the company.

The South Texas weather provides opportunities for outdoor activities for most months out of the year. Whether you are working with a personal trainer, working out at a gym, pursuing an enjoyable outdoor activity or following an exercise program online, the ability to break it down into increments can be most helpful towards establishing consistent health and wellness habits. I say this because my 40 plus years of experience has shown me that whether you’re exercising on your own or with a group, whether you’re with a certified expert, or guided by online recommendations the desired goal can be more readily achieved when you do two things: 1, Consider the exercise plan as one part of the overall Wellness approach. 2, Approach the plan in steps.

In the previous article we mentioned exercise as one part of the overall Wellness approach. We said that the Wellness approach makes one more likely to reach goals related to well-being. In this article we will focus on the exercise portion - step by step.

No matter what your source is for an exercise or activity plan, it is usually designed to be integrated into your given week or 7 day timeframe. Examples include walking 3 to 4 times a week, or going to the gym and training upper body on Monday, legs on Tuesday and cardio on Wednesday and repeating that routine on Thursday Friday and Saturday. It might be playing ball with the kids on

Health and Wellness: The Exercise Component:How to “work it out”

Tuesday, Thursday and doing yardwork on Saturday and going to the bay front on Sunday. There are a variety of routines that people undertake - too many to list here. Many of them seem to be centered on what you do within a given week. Having an exercise routine or activity plan within a week, or 7 day timeframe, allows you to look at each week as a step you can take towards even better health. Some people group these timeframes into 2, 4, or 6 week cycles for their clients. I’m referring to a cycle as a period of time during which the routines or activities remain consistent without much change. I have had the best results with 3 week cycles (i.e. repeating a one week routine 3 times while lasting 3 weeks).

This relates to what I mentioned in the previous article when I said, “We can do anything, if it’s only going to last 3 weeks”. Here’s why it works. When you start your exercise routine in that first week, your body is adjusting to the new activities. When you’re in the second week, it’s easier than the first because your body is familiar with the routine. The third week serves as a mini celebration towards completing your first cycle - your body is familiar with it; you’ve already done it twice (during the first two weeks) so you know that you can complete this third week. Depending upon the results, you might change things a little to enhance the results you’ve gotten or you might just say, “I got these results after one 3 week cycle. I wonder what the next cycle will provide. And the next cycle after that? And so on”.

This approach allows you to look at the results after each cycle and decide what changes can be made to maintain or improve the results you’ve received. You start to say things like, “I can repeat that cycle for another 3 weeks because I know how it feels and I know the results it gives me”. You start looking at the overall exercise/activity plan as a series of cycles, or steps, that provide results. It is no longer an endless experience of day-to-day activities with no change in sight. The light at the end of the tunnel is seen every 3 weeks!

Since the exercise routine is only one part of the overall Wellness approach we will cover other parts that are important for you to reach your Wellness potential and experience optimal well-being. This will be done in my next series of articles. In the meantime, have fun and congratulate yourself on your achievements each step of the way. Make your three weeks interesting!
