WELCOME

2015 sees us holding our 21st Annual On-Property bull sale, which also marks 68 years

of stud Shorthorn breeding and over 100 years breeding Durham Shorthorn cattle in

north west NSW and southern Queensland.

On offer this year are 90 bulls and 30 heifers, that we are proud to have our brand on.

It is the first time since 1984 that Yamburgan has offered females for sale by auction.

The entire draft of autumn drop K heifers will be sold as ‘Buyers Choice’ which means

two heifers will be lotted together and the highest bidder will have the choice of both

heifers or a single heifer with Yamburgan retaining the unsold heifer. Some of the breeds

highest indexing bulls and females are on offer, providing purchasers a chance to secure

top Yamburgan genetics. This year showcases the progeny of our new sires, both AI and

natural service, and brings a new mix of genetics to our offering.

An optimistic future lays ahead in our industry with increased demand, tight supplies and

record prices with the EYCI at an all time record high. Both the long term and short term

forward indicators for beef pricing appear to be strong with some analysts predicting

the EYCI to climb as high as 600 c/kg, if widespread rain boosts production. Our belief

in the beef industry and commitment to producing economic value at all stages of the

production system has increased demand for Yamburgan genetics.

Once again this year Manchee Ag cattle have had success in some of the countries

leading feedlot and carcase trials. The highlight for the last 12 months was winning the ANZ National Beef Carcase Competition held by Beef Australia, where we won multiple

awards including the Overall Champion Carcase. The Champion carcase wasn’t an

isolated one as we also won two class firsts, a second, a third and two fifths in the grain

fed carcase section. The winning pen in class 5 made an average of $1,558.89 and

were sired by Yamburgan Grissom G31 and Yamburgan Tobermorey. Class 6 winning

pen returned an average of $1,668.33 per head with an average EMA of 93 sq/cm and

were by Yamburgan Sparta and Yamburgan Emperor. All four sires have sons available

in this years sale.

This years sale bulls have been prepared, as always, on forage oats during the winter

months and have performed very well. The heifers have been AI’d and joined naturally

with pregnancy details available on sale day. All bulls and females are available for viewing

at any time leading up to the sale. Please contact us to arrange an inspection time or if

with your selection process on sale day.

Manchee Agriculture have always strived to breed cattle

that are industry relevant, at all points in the production

system. Our belief that we are ‘beef’ producers makes

us aware of the whole supply chain, not just live cattle.

Balancing the ability to have functional, fertile females,

producing calves that weigh and hit chiller specifications

with consumer satisfaction, is the ultimate goal. We are

conscious of the need to produce a protein source to feed

the worlds growing population but are compelled to produce

a product that will provide the consumer with repeatable

quality eating experiences. Within our breeding program we

are identifying the curve bending sires that are producing

high EMA and IMF progeny, two traits that are generally

negatively correlated. The Shorthorn breed has the ability

to increase red meat yield and produce a product second

to none. Recent feedback has highlighted these traits in

Yamburgan genetics.

UNDERSTANDING EBV’S

Performance recording is of vital importance in the Manchee Agriculture operation. MA believes in the utilisation of large contemporary groups to allow animals, that meet our tough selection criteria, to be identified and offered at our sale. This years two year old bulls were assessed for scanning in a contemporary group of 99 bulls and the yearling bulls were in a group of 31.

Our ability to focus on the combination of practical breeding principles including fertility, calving ease, weight for age and carcase quality sets MA apart when it comes to our strength in all selection indexes.

CE % Direct = Direct Calving Ease - influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age.CE % Daughters = Daughters’ Calving Ease - indicates how easily that sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age.Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on AI and hand mating records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation length.Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth.200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 & 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam.Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. Milk EBV (kg) estimates an animal’s milking ability. For sires, it indicates the effect of the daughter’s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability.Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase re-cords and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days.Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measure-ments from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the

12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from mea-surements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13-rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences be-tween animals for retail yield in a standard 300 kg carcase. Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic dif-ference in the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.Selection Indices ($’s) are reported as EBVs, in units of rela-tive earning capacity for a given market. They reflect both the short-term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer-term profit generated by his daugh-ters in a self-replacing cow herd. A selection index combines the EBVs with economic information (costs and returns) for specific market and production systems to rank animals based on relative profit values.Domestic Maternal Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differ-ences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in an example commercial herd in a temperate environment (eg Shorthorn, Angus or Hereford cows) targeting pasture grown and finished steers for the domestic trade (eg. supermarket).Export Maternal Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differ-ences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd in a temperate environment (eg Shorthorn, Angus or Hereford cows) targeting steers for the Japanese B3 market. Steers are assumed to be pasture grown to feedlot entry then feedlot finished for 150 days.Northern Maternal Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differ-ences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in an example commercial herd in northern Australia (eg Brahman, Droughtmaster or Santa Gertrudis cows) targeting the export trade. Steers are finished on grass and marketed at 600 kg live weight (320 kg HSCW and 10 mm P8 fat depth).Accuracy (%) - An accuracy value is presented as a percent-age with every EBV. Accuracy of 90% & above are a high accuracy estimate of the animal’s true breeding value and it is unlikely that EBVs will change considerably with additional data.Accuracy of 75 - 90% are of medium-high accuracy and will usually have been calculated based on the animal’s own perfor-mance and the performance for a small number of progeny. Accuracy of 50 - 74% are of medium accuracy and will usually have been calculated based on the animal’s own performance and some pedigree information. Accuracy of less than 50%are preliminary and could change substantially as more direct performance information becomes available.

The Manchee family has been involved in the Australian beef cattle industry for at least five generations on both sides of the family. Yamburgan’s gene pool started in Queensland in the 1880’s with the stud commencing in 1947, founded by John’s grandfather, JS Manchee. In 1969 the stud moved from ‘Yam-burgan, Dirranbandi in Queensland to our current property ‘Wallah’ near Narrabri.

The herd made numerous female purchases in the early days. The famed Cloudy family was introduced from Brunette Downs, in the Northern Territory and the Mayflower family was introduced from the Gunnawarra stud. In 1959, the influential sire Gundabri Champagne 128th, was purchased for a record price of 2,000 gunnies. The next influential sire was Pioneer Corker, introduced from Claremont, North West Queensland, for $7,000 in 1973. Corker sons were sold to all states and territories in Australia and also to New Zealand.

The 1970’s saw Lionel pioneer the implementation of objec-tive measurement in the breed and adopt the Breedplan performance recording system from its inception in 1974. The operation has merged its breeding strategy and manage-ment program into a streamlined operation which continues to dominate Shorthorn Group Breedplan, and is one of Australia’s largest registered performance recorded herds.

Major Foxer was an outstanding sire, purchased privately in 1982 from David Perry at Warren, NSW, for $15,000. He bred extremely well when mated to Pioneer Corker daughters. Sons of Major Foxer were used in the stud and bred very well. Top show cow Yamburgan Cloudy 259th, was by Yamburgan Boxer 38th, and was Champion Female at Sydney in 1990 and 1992. Major Foxer sons top price was $18,000 at the Dubbo National Sale.

Two other notable sires of more recent years that have left a long term influence in the herd are The Grove Lockyer X857 and Weebollabolla Theodore T85. Both sires infused high eye muscle areas into their progeny and both have left superior

females.

In more recent years Yam-burgan has had success in the Show ring winning Grand Cham-pion Bull at the Brisbane EKKA in 2009 and 2010. Benchmark-ing our cattle in Australia’s feed-lot and carcase competitions has seen more than 50 awards won over the last 10 years.

We don’t focus our cattle breeding philosophy for a specific market but remain focused on breeding consistent cattle that will perform at any age, for any market. This is highlighted by Manchee Agriculture steers winning both Coles domestic classes and 100 day grain feed competitions, either with or without the MSA indexing system implemented in judging. Feedlot performance is of vital importance and our cattle’s con-sistency has seen winning results over 70 days, 100 days and 250 days on feed.

Our breeding philosophy hasn’t changed in the 68 years of stud breeding, it has always been to deliver cattle that breed consistently for the commercial cattleman, delivering superior profits. Whilst Yamburgan produces seedstock cattle, it is backed by a strong commercial herd. Both breeding herds are run under commercial conditions with economical productivity a priority. Foundation females have been known to come from our commercial herd and have come through the SFA system. Yamburgan Achilles is a potent sire from this program that currently has 40 females in stud production.

The depth and quality of our female herd has always been a high priority and this is the key factor to the consistency and predictability of our sale bulls. We have always maintained the belief in the females behind the bull breeding operation and have worked with a belief that if the females are feminine and fertile, they will produce muscular, masculine and virile bulls.

E103 is extremely balanced and structurally sound with a lot of fill through the hindquarter. He was a very easy doing bull, which is evident in his fat figures. The more data we are collecting on Emperor, the more he continues to impress. E103 is in the top 5% of the breed for the domestic ma-ternal index, export maternal index and northern maternal index. He is a trait leader for gestation length, scrotal size, EMA and IMF. Homozygous Poll. He is represented by 16 sons and 9 daughters.

Ossie E65 is a moderate framed, slick coated sire with an excellent hind quarter and top line. A bull with a lot of muscle and carcase shape but not course in any way. He has excellent structure and temperament. Y Jill 132nd has bred extremely well over a long period, her first calf sold to Evan Flint, South Bundara stud for $10,000 (and is the sire of South Bundara Dividend) and she has three daughters retained, one of which was used as an ET donor in 2010. Grissom is a sire we are really impressed with, his daugh-ters are neat uddered with the volume of their sire. He produces cattle with length, shape, carcase and soundness. Grissom sired steers in the Beef Australia National Carcase Competition class 5 (260-340kg carcase) winning pen. He is a trait leader for all three growth traits and top 10% for all three indexes. Sparta carries exceptional carcase characteristics thought the hindquarter and top line. He has a great mix of genetics combining Aladdin and Theodore giving excellent carcase shape and softness in one package. Some of the standout lots in this years catalogue are sired by Sparta F149. We admire the width, spring of rib and muscling ability of the Sparta F149 progeny but also the females he is producing. These genetics are blending well with our current sires. On offer is the entire drop of autumn 2014 heifers, with the exception of heifers that are not retained as breeders, due to our

strict selection process. Yamburgan hasn’t sold females at auction since 1984 and this drop of heifers offer some of the best

genetics with in our herd. All heifers will be offered as ‘Buyers Choice’ with the choice of either heifer or both heifers.

The heifers represent some of our superior genetics including the first daughters of imported sire Waukaru Orion 2047 and

the first opportunity to secure females from top donor cows, Yamburgan Rosewood G23 and Yamburgan Matilda G2 and sired

by Yamburgan Tobermorey. These are genetics that wouldn’t normally be available for purchase.

All heifers were in a synchronised AI program on the 1st June 2015 (due to calve 10th March 2016). Heifers were joined

naturally to Eloora Designer J6, Dubbo National Champion bull in 2014 or Yamburgan Zeus H140. Pregnancy test results will

be available on sale day.

‘BUYERS CHOICE’ SYSTEM

18 DURHAM TROPICAL BULLS FOR PRIVATE SALE

The Durham Tropical program was developed in conjunction with a Central Australian cattleman to breed bulls that have high meat quality, fertility and heat tolerance. To do this we incorporated our two highest DNA tested Santa Gertrudis sire lines for marbling and tenderness. The selected sire lines were backed by females of exceptional breeding quality, with a 100% fertility.

Durham Tropicals are a rotational Shorthorn x Santa Gertrudis composite that maintain approximately 75% of the hybrid vigor (heterosis) occurring in a first cross animal. By utilising the Shorthorn and Santa Gertrudis (already 5/8th Shorthorn) we were ef-fectively able to create an animal that is 81.25% Shorthorn. This allowed us to quickly stabilise the progeny type whilst maintaining the hybrid vigor giving a 10-20% increase in weaning weight.

MA have won a string of major feedlot and carcase awards with Durham Tropical steers, including the 2015 Beef Australia Na-tional Champion Carcase, the 2013 & 2014 RAS Champion Domestic Carcase, the 2013 Primex Pacific Beef EU Champion Pen, winner of the 2010 RNA MSA meat eating quality competition and winner of the inaugural RNA LJ Hooker Taste Test in 2004.

Fertility is paramount and only 100% calving rate females are retained in the program. This means that since the devel-opment of the breed no female has had less than a 100% calving rate. Fertility is still statistically rated as the highest profit driver of a beef cattle breeding herd.

FERTILITYWe are still paid on weight. The biggest contributing factors to weight is length and growth. Durham Tropical steers have out-performed in major feedlot and carcase trials since 2004. Durham Tropical steers continually average more than 2 kg/day over 100 days, HGP free.

WEIGHT GAIN & YIELDMA Durham Tropical steers to date are averaging over 61 MSA index points, with less comparable hump height to British breeds. Our recent trials have shown no difference between the pure bos taurus and the Durham Tropical for meat quality.

Travel on the Kamilaroi Hwy through Boggabri and Baan Baa. 17km after Baan Baa, at the small locality of Turrawan, turn right onto the Old Gunnedah Rd. Approximately 8km along this road you will cross the Namoi River on a single lane cement bridge, turn right straight after the bridge onto the Maules Creek Rd. Follow this road 9km to Manchee Ag.

FROM NARRABRI: Follow the main street (Maitland St) south east out of town, travel under the railway overpass near the RSL club on the outskirts of town. Continue on this road for 12 km, turn left onto the Maules Creek Rd. Do not go over the Namoi River (single lane bridge). Travel on this road for 9 km.

SUPPLEMENTARY SHEETAll bulls will have up to date weights, EMA, fat depth, scrotal size measurements and have been semen tested. A supplementary sheet with this information will be available from the 21st August, 2015. Group Breedplan figures are printed in the catalogue. Any bull with a shaded Breedplan figure indicates he is in the top 25% of the breed for that trait. All heifers will be pregnancy tested prior to sale with details provided on a supplementary sheet. HEALTHAll bulls have been vaccinated with VibrioVac, 7 in 1 and Pestiguard and drenched with Dectomax on 6th July 2015. All heifers have been vaccinated with 7 in 1 and Pestiguard and were given MultiMin and Dectomax on the 1st July 2015. Booster shots are due in June each year.
