Out the Study Window Journey Through Lent

The word Lentcomes from theold English wordfor “spring.” Ionce heard it put,Lent is “springtraining” for theChristian as weare tutored in

repentance, faith, and holy living. Theseason has been kept as a time for devotion and self-denial that comes forthfrom a faithful heart that dwells on God’sWord and draws life and hope from it. Beginning in the 4th century the observanceof Lent originally became connected with aforty day fast prior to Easter.

This tradition continues today as someChristians give up something during Lentor surrender a vice like chocolate, coffee,or television. Others may eat a meagermeal of soup and salad while gathering together. While a fast of any kind is notnecessary, it is certainly a helpful way todiscipline the body and the mind upon thethings of God and the sacrifice of Christon our behalf.

Our Lenten season began with AshWednesday featuring communion and theimposition of ashes. During the Sundaysin Lent, Rev. Kristy Parker and ChristianEducation Director Tiffany Horvath, haveagreed to join me in preaching as wefocus on the theme; “The Friends ofJesus.” It is encouraging to know that asmany members gather in small groups toCome...See…and Renew…, we will alsobe enriched to hear about Jesus’s friendseach Sunday and what a difference itmade for Jesus, and for us, and for thechurch.

May our Lord bless your contemplations, your prayers, your questions, your doubtsand your joys while you reflect on God’sgreat love for you through the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord JesusChrist.

New Testament Video Series - Sundays, 10:00 AM, in the Chapel

March 1: The Pastoral EpistlesThe letters of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus are called thePastoral Epistles because they provide instruction to pastors in how to execute their responsibilities. Most critical scholars are convinced, though, that the authorgiving these instructions was not Paul.

March 8: The Book of Hebrews and the Rise of Christian Anti-SemitismThe Epistle to the Hebrews appears to be misnamed ontwo counts. Most scholars think that the epistle was not aletter but a sermon and that it was delivered not to Jewsbut to a Christian congregation.

March 15: First Peter and the Persecution of the Early ChristiansFirst Peter offers a message of hope to Christians livingin Asia Minor who were experiencing persecution. Indeed, the word for suffering occurs more often in thisshort letter than in any other book of the New Testament.

March 22: The Book of RevelationAnother example of early Christian literature produced in the context of persecution and suffering, the Book ofRevelation is probably the New Testament book that is and always has been the most misunderstood.

March 29: Do We Have the Original New Testament? The answer is no, that there are no “original” manuscriptsthat we know of -- only copies upon copies across generations. The lecturer reviews the early manuscriptsavailable and the problems that the differences betweenthem pose for modern readers and scholars.

Comparative Religion - Tuesdays, 10:30 AM, in the ParlorThis video series explores the manysimilarities that link all religions aswell as major differences amongthe world's religious traditions. The course will look at how religions develop and utilize notionsof sacred time, space, objects, people and texts as well asreligious rituals, conceptualizations of divinity, the natureof the human predicament and the paths to overcoming it.Most points of comparison are drawn from Christianity,Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.
