Welcome!Dear Festival Enthusiasts,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the annual Na-tional Orchestra Festival, (NOF) sponsored by Thomastik-Infeld/Connolly Music. The 2015 NOF showcases 16 spectacular ensem-bles representing 16 schools from across the United States. Before this event even begins, we want to offer our sincere congratula-tions on all your hard work and accomplishment on being accept-ed into ASTA’s premier festival.

The NOF is proud to present some of the nation’s finest music ed-ucators as our adjudicators, performance clinicians, and master class clinicians. Each festival group receives taped and written comments, as well as ratings by each of the three concert adjudicators.

At the end of each concert performance, one of our highly-qualified clinicians will provide each group a personal clinic focused on enhancing their music-making. Ad-ditionally, all orchestras will have the opportunity during the conference to work with master class clinicians. These clinicians have national and international reputations as musicians and teachers. ASTA is committed to delivering the highest artistic and educational experience to its members and their students. We are confident that the 2015 NOF will meet this goal.

For the vast majority of students, teachers, and educators who are part of NOF, Ray Charles’ statement about music and its profound impact on his life is perhaps, rele-vant to us all.

“I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water.”

The students and teachers involved in performing at the NOF are blessed to have such on opportunity to discover and present the beauty and excitement of music. Thank you for your devotion to this art and for your preparation and dedication to each other. And, lastly . . . we thank you for your performance today in Salt Lake City. We wish you all the best of success!

Sincerely,Valerie M. PalmieriOrganizing Chair

Elizabeth A.H. Green School Educator Award

William Bitter

Awarded annually to a teacher with a distinguished current career in a school orchestral setting.

Award presentation on Saturday, March 21 at 11:15 a.m. at the National Orchestra Festival Winner’s Concert

Currently in his 34th year with Gilbert Public Schools, Gilbert, Arizonia, William “Bill” Bitter, director of orchestras and chairman of the Performing

Arts Department at Highland High School, is our 2015 Elizabeth A.H. Green School Educator award winner. Since joining the newly opened Highland High School in 1993, Bitter has built an award-winning program that currently consists of five performing ensembles, with an en-rollment of more than 300 students. In 2002, the school’s Highland Symphonic Strings became the first orchestra from an Arizona high school to perform in the world-renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City. This ensemble also has appeared three times (1997, 2007, and 2013) at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. Bitter has been active in his field’s professional organizations, including the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, serving as vice president of high school orchestra activities, state concert festival chairman, fall orchestra festival chairman, and regional orchestra chairman. He was a nine year member of the staff of the National High School Honors Orchestra, sponsored by ASTA with NSOA, serving as organizing chairman in 2005. Bitter has served as an adjudicator and clinician for festivals throughout the southwest United States and Hawaii. He has been awarded the O. M. Hartsell “Excellence in Teaching Music” award by the Arizona Music Educators Association (AMEA), and the Outstanding Public School Teacher Award in Arizona by the Arizona Chapter of ASTA. In 2014, the AMEA named him the Arizona Music Educator of the Year. ASTA is proud in having such an outstanding member to honor with this award for 2015. Congratulations, and thank you for all you do for your students and in service to your profession.
