Stage 1 Excursion
Stage 2/3Beechworth
Excursion
What a lovely day we had for our Book Parade and Book Fair! The students looked
fabulous in their costumes in the parade following on from the Stage 1 students’
lovely readers’ theatre. Thank you to everyone who came along to enjoy the day
and take advantage of the Book Fair.
Congratulations to our athletes competing at Albury in the Riverina PSSA Athlet-
ics Carnival, particularly to Ella Collins who will be going on to compete in the high
jump event at the State Athletics Championships at Homebush later in the year.
Stage 2/3, along with myself, Miss Buchanan, Mrs Thain, Hannah Richardson and
Cathy Booth had a wonderful time learning about Australian History on the Bee-
chworth Excursion. Our students were praised for their exemplary behaviour and
their interest in all activities. We had delightful weather and came back with many
great memories!
Stage 1 also enjoyed their Coolamon excursion last Thursday. They certainly made
a lasting impression everywhere they went. We look forward to repeating this ex-
perience in the future!
Tomorrow, we welcome the Matong community for RUOK Day to be held at the
school with fun activities for the whole family. Our guest speaker to address par-
ents and community is Chris Wilson from Riverina Bluebell. Parents and Community
members are encouraged to save this date to come along, join the festivities and
connect with each other. We are looking for helpers to supervise activity stations,
please let us know if you would like to join the team. All welcome!
Miss M enjoyed the Matong Public School baby shower on Friday. Miss M will be
taking maternity leave until the end of 2016. Congratulations to Mrs Natalie Mur-
phy who will be replacing Miss M on Stage 1 during Miss M’s maternity leave and we
look forward to her sharing her wonderful skills and talents.
Kinder transition will commence with a parent information meeting Wednesday 16th
September. If you know of anyone who has children of school age for next year,
but don’t have older siblings already with us, please advise us so that contact can
be made and the relevant paperwork sent out.
Please remember, as always my door is always open. I am only a phone call away.
Have a great week

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
STAGE 1 NEWS
On Thursday we went to Allawah Lodge, the hospital and library in Coolamon. We also
went to visit the Ganmain Preschool. On Friday, we did NRL training with Tim. The most
exciting thing that happened was Miss M’s baby shower.
Connecting with our Community Excursion Last Wednesday, Mrs Murphy, Mrs Val Carroll, Mrs Jen Hatty and I were honoured to
accompany students from Stage One, along with David Beard and Jack McGovern, on
an excursion to Coolamon and Ganmain. Visiting Allawah Lodge, the Coolamon-Ganmain
Hospital and Ganmain Pied Piper Pre-School to perform ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and several
musical items, our students were excellent ambassadors for Matong Public School. We
were very proud to see our students bring huge smiles to the faces of so many
through their performances and also through just spending some time talking with the
residents, patients and children. During our excursion, we also visited the Coolamon
Library to celebrate Book Week. All students were again highly engaged and praised
for their excellent behaviour and participation. Congratulations everyone!
Borrowing from Coolamon Library Some students took the opportunity to borrow whilst on excursion last week. Items
may be returned to Coolamon Library or the Wagga Library. Ideally, families will take
responsibility for the return of these items, however, on this occasion, Miss McKelvie
is happy to return items for students. Any items you would like Miss McKelvie to
return need to be returned to school BEFORE the end of this term.
Baby Shower: Special Thanks Very special thanks to everyone. Your kindness, love and generosity has been simply incredible! Much love and gratitude, Valerie, Daniel and baby bump xxxxx
Stage 2/3 Beechworth Excursion
On September 1st Stage 2/3 left to go on an
excursion to Beechworth for three days, with the
intention to learn about gold, Ned Kelly and the
history of Beechworth.
Our first stop was Culcairn for morning tea, we had
a quick bite to eat and then we were on the road
again. After an hour and a half drive we got to
Beechworth and had lunch at the park.
The first activity was the Precinct experience, this
involved tours through the Bourke Museum, Court
House, Ned Kelly Vault, Chinese burning towers and
the Telegraph Station. We learnt some great things
about Beechworth, the gold rush and Ned Kelly.
After that we went to the Old Priory where we
slept for the next 2 nights. Before we went to bed
we had Lazy Harry, a locally known Australian artist,
come and sing a few songs. Once he had finished we
had supper and went to bed.
The next day we had eggs for breakfast then hopped on a bigger bus to go gold
fossicking/panning. Our tour guide helped us each find a flake of gold! For morning tea
we went to a national park, and then our tour guide showed us around the alluvial gold
mines and told us a great story about the gold rush in Beechworth.
For lunch we had sausage sizzle at the lake and played on the equipment. We then
jumped on our small bus and went to the cordial factory where we tasted some
raspberry and portello flavoured cordial, yum! For the rest of the afternoon we got a
chance to walk around Beechworth and visit Beechworth Honey, Beechworth lolly shop
and Beechworth Gold. We were all very tired after this and went back to the Old
Priory for the afternoon.
Thursday morning we woke up, had breakfast and packed up to head to Glenrowan. We
got to watch the Ned Kelly experience, which was scary at times! We then got to go
shopping for souvenirs and finished the day walking the trail of Ned Kelly’s last stand.
We all had a great three days in
Beechworth, learnt many new things
and tasted some yummy food.

LIFE EDUCATION AND HEALTHY HAROLD
The Life Education Van will be visiting us on Monday 14th
September. Students will have an opportunity to visit the van
in their stage groups. This year the P&C have generously
offered to pay the cost of $10 per student to cover the Life
Education sessions, student workbooks and a sticker for each
child. Thank you. The Narrandera Soroptimists will also be
joining us on the day to provide students and staff with a
healthy lunch of chicken salad wraps at no charge. We really
appreciate their generous support of our school and the
positive promotion of a healthy lifestyle.
Please complete the attached permission note.
Harold Products.
Life Education is a not for profit, registered charity that relies heavily on the raising
of funds within the community to assist in the delivery of the service. The sale of
Harold merchandise to the children whilst the program is visiting each school supports
the fundraising activities. A price list is attached.
INTRODUCING NATALIE MURPHY
I am 22 years old and studied a Bachelor of Education
(Primary) at Charles Sturt University in Wagga. I live in
Narrandera and am closely connected to the community in
which I have been raised in. I have a particular interest in
sport, including basketball, athletics and netball. I can play
the guitar and sing, which will come in handy for school
performances and concerts! I have also had lots of
experience working with Aboriginal students at a local school
and also in a small rural community in South Australia. Whilst
studying at university I have worked as a SLSO at
Narrandera High School working with Aboriginal students and students with additional
needs and at Narrandera Out Of School Hours supervising and planning after school
and holiday activities. I believe my role as a teacher in a rural setting is not solely in
the classroom, but within the broader community also. On my Internship this term, I
have enjoyed getting to know the students, teachers, parents and community members
who are part of the community of Matong and I am excited to be a part of such a
wonderful team of people. I am passionate about making learning diverse and exciting
by providing students with real-life, hands on, practical experiences. It is these things
I bring to Matong Public School; not only in the classroom but in all areas of the
community life.
Hello from Father Justin Darlow! Some of you may already know me, but for those who don't,
here are just a few words of introduction. I grew up with my
parents and three siblings on a family farm between Holbrook
and Jingellic. I attended schools in Holbrook (St. Patrick’s
Primary) and Culcairn (Billabong High), and later completed
University studies at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga
to obtain a Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture). In 2002 I
joined the Vianney College seminary and was ordained a priest in
2009 by Bishop Hanna. The first 3 1/2 years of my priestly life
and ministry were spent at St Joseph's Leeton as an assistant
priest. In July 2013 I travelled to Rome to complete a Licence in Theology (with a
specialisation in Church History). Upon my return to Australia in July Bishop Hanna of
Wagga appointed me as the Administrator of the Ganmain parish. An Administrator is a priest who essentially takes on all the duties and rights of a parish priest in the interim period before one is appointed. In addition to parish work here I teach a few courses at Vianney College seminary during the week. I am delighted to be here and offer my priestly
life and ministry for the people of Ganmain and Matong areas. Thank you to all those who have already made the transition back into parish life a smooth one, and I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. I would welcome the opportunity to visit you in
your homes whether for a meal or just a cuppa. At this stage I intend to help out Mrs.
Brigette Jacht with the Catholic Special Religious Education (SRE) fortnightly (Mrs. Jacht
will be coming on a weekly basis). Please pray for me that I may be a meek and humble
servant of the Gospel according to the heart of Jesus the Good Shepherd. God bless you
all!
Youcef Abdi: Never Give Up Yesterday, students K to 6 were treated to a visit from Australian Olympian Youcef Abdi.
Algerian born, Youcef moved to Australia after visiting Sydney for the 1996 World Junior
Championships. He competed for his first Australian team in 2006, winning bronze in the
1500m at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. He took up steeplechase and competed in
the event at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Having attended Little Athletics as a youngster, Youcef spoke to our students about the
importance of goal setting and perseverance – approaching your goals head on with a
NEVER GIVE UP ATTITUDE.
Originating from a community with no electricity, no running
water and no shops, Youcef also spoke about how anyone
from anywhere can achieve anything. You simply need to set
your mind to the task, practise your skill and never, ever give
up on your goal or yourself.
We extend our thanks to Youcef and also to Mrs Mel Barrow,
Coolamon Little Athletics, who organised Youcef’s visit.
Registration for Coolamon Little Athletics is coming up soon.
Enquiries can be made to Mrs Mel Barrow on 0431 207 449.
Registration information included in today’s newsletter.
Matong PS Community Garden Club
With Spring upon us… (yes it really is here!)… we are calling on students, parents and members of the wider community to become members of our Matong PS Community Garden Club. Garden Club members will be vested with the very important job of helping to manage our school vegetable garden. Members would assist with planting and upkeep of our garden. Garden produce will be put to great use cooking and eating healthy foods created as part of a kitchen garden program. Sharing the ‘fruits and vegetables’ of our labour will be another opportunity to connect. It is hoped that establishment of the Matong PS Community Garden Club will: forge home-school-community partnerships. promote positive connections with others of all ages. promote positive, healthy eating habits. promote positive attitudes and environmental awareness. help students engage in real-world learning eg practical applications of literacy
and numeracy. All students, parents and community people interested in being part of this exciting venture, should contact Miss McKelvie at school before the end of this term – no later than Friday 18th September, 2015.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY ROAD SAFETY REMINDER
FOR FAMILIES
With the school holidays approaching, daily routines will soon change. Different play locations and holiday destinations means different traffic environments.
So to help keep our children safe, families are reminded about these key road safety points:
Stop, look, listen, think every time you cross the road. If your child is aged 8 years or younger hold their hand
when walking near or across roads. If your child is 9-10 years old always actively supervise them.
It’s the law that everyone wears a helmet when riding a
bike in a public place. It makes sense to wear a helmet when riding scooters and
skateboards too! Click clack front ‘n back every person for every trip. Everyone in the car must be securely buckled up in the right seatbelt or child restraint. Talk to your child about being a safe road user. Reinforce safe road behaviours by being a good role model! Children learn safe road
behaviours from the adults who care for them. Talk about what you are doing to be safe when near roads, in the car and when riding.
Point out road safety differences and dangers in new environments.
This is especially important when on holidays in different surroundings. Roads, footpaths, parks,
carparks, bike tracks and bike lanes may look different in holiday areas.
The best way to keep your child safe is to actively supervise them.
Talk and teach your child about road safety every time you are out an about.
Remind other adults who care for your children to do this too.
