Sometimes planned, usually not. There’s often a time, but more often it’s purely by chance. It’s the moment you meet that someone or something you’ve been looking for. An initial moment of meeting that happens once, yet stays in memory. And it’s what we’d like to introduce you to in Waukesha Pewaukee. Two Wisconsin towns nestled together between the Big Cities and Lake Country to form one very charming meeting place.

WHERE MORE THAN JUST PEOPLE COME TOGETHERIn Waukesha Pewaukee you’ll encounter someplace special. A place where old friends meet in fine restaurants to catch up on busy lives. Where families meet to make memories while kids are still kids. Where antique stores meet avid collectors. And where businesses from Madison

to Milwaukee enjoy the easiest way to meet in the middle. It’s also where a sparkling river meets a peaceful lake, a vibrant downtown meets rich historic buildings, and travelers meet townspeople renown for being gracious and welcoming.

Visit Waukesha Pewaukee and meet all the reasons that made you glad you came.

PEWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

FUN ON AND AROUND THE LAKE

It’s not hard to find what’s so special about Pewaukee. It’s a shimmering 2,500-acre jewel located right at the heart of the action — Pewaukee Lake, the largest lake in Waukesha County.

IT’S WHERE FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEET TO SHARE UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS

It seems everyone has his or her own reason to love the lake. Anglers flock to Pewaukee Lake from all over for some of the best fishing in the state — our lake is even one of the top spots in Wisconsin to land a 50-plus-inch muskie! Water sport enthusiasts are drawn to the lake’s calm surface for thrilling afternoons of water skiing, wakeboarding and tubing. Adventure-seekers are drawn here to set out in canoes or kayaks to follow the shoreline and explore each inviting inlet.

WHATEVER BRINGS YOU TO PEWAUKEE THE FIRST TIME, THE AREA’S STUNNING NATURAL BEAUTY, BOUNDLESS ACTIVITIES AND WARM AND WELCOMING SPIRIT WILL BE SURE TO BRING YOU BACK

But maybe you’re more the romantic type. In that case, why not savor a sunset cruise on a luxury pontoon boat or enjoy a scenic stroll along the shore? Or if you’re looking for an event the whole family will love, it’s hard to beat a day at our sandy beach complete with an area reserved for frolicking in the shallows and swimming.

Our charming beach and lakefront park also set the stage for even more excitement. All summer long, you can enjoy weekly water ski shows and lakeside concerts featuring top area talent. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a rousing multi-sport weekend and annual food festival to fill out our packed lineup of events.

Of course, you’ll also want to find time in your schedule to browse our interesting collection of eclectic boutiques and inviting galleries. Not to mention sample the enticing menus of our wide range of restaurants, from casual sandwich shops to elegant supper clubs and steak houses. You’ll find them scattered conveniently all around the lake and cloistered on the eastern shore in our enchanting and historic business district.

Muskie Fishing, Pewaukee Lake

Battling a monster muskie into your boat. Swooshing your cross-country skis through a landscape of fresh white powder. Picking the perfect pumpkin on a fall hayride with your kids. Whatever you call “fun”, Waukesha Pewaukee offers a veritable “What’s What” of What To Do in Wisconsin — for all ages and seasons!

Of course, Pewaukee Lake is a great place to start. During the summer, the lake offers a watery playground for sailing, water skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. When the snow flies, it converts into a winter wonderland for ice skating, snowshoeing and some of the best ice fishing in the area.

The surrounding area offers a bounty of its own for outdoor enthusiasts. You can wander along miles of wooded or paved trails, and learn more about the native plants and wildlife of a preserved prairie at the Retzer Nature Center. Closer to town, you can rent a bike or character float to pedal or paddle along the scenic Fox River and its adjacent riverwalk through town. It truly is where fun meets adventure.

But you better get going. The list is long and the time is short!

Born in Waukesha in 1915, Les was the second son of Evelyn and George Polsfuss. Always searching for the perfect sound, Les experimented with everything during his childhood. His first Sears acoustic guitar ended up “stuffed with socks and rags and filled with plaster of Paris.”

In the early 1950s, Les and his wife Mary Ford had hit record after hit record. Mary’s crystal voice matched with Les’ cutting-edge recording techniques set a new standard for pop music. Ironically, Les’ new sound captured the attention of upcoming guitarists, who displaced Les and Mary’s style with Rock and Roll.

In addition to inventing the solid body electric guitar, which bears his name, Les holds the patent for the 8-track tape recorder and several patents related to the guitar.

Few people knew of Les’ multiple challenges including receiving a very serious electric shock, losing his hearing in both ears, and having quadruple by-pass heart surgery. He wanted to focus on playing the perfect notes on his guitar and entertaining the adoring crowds who flocked to see him.

In 2009, at the age of 94, Les passed away with family and friends by his side. Les chose to be buried in his hometown at Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha.

DREAMERS MEET INNOVATIONSLes Paul Walking TourShare in the life, spirit and legacy of Les Paul by retracing his footsteps in his hometown. This self tour chronicles his younger years of exploration and innovation to his later years where he and his wife, Mary Ford, played their guitars together in public for the first time.

1. As a teen, Les played his acoustic guitar and harmonica at Beekman’s Bar-B-Q, a drive-in restaurant at Goerke’s Corner. To earn more tips he created a way to amplify his voice and harmonica and electrify his guitar. These were major steps. The area restaurant was at the intersection of I-94 and Hwy. 18.

2. Les Paul Parkway starts at E. Moreland Boulevard and Hwy. 164 which becomes Hwy. 59 as it loops around the east and south sides of Waukesha. Les enjoyed riding on “his” road.

3. Les Paul attended Park Elementary School, which is now an office building: 210 NW Barstow Street.

4. Les was born June 9, 1915 in an apartment over his father’s repair garage (now a Walgreen’s parking lot): 109 North Street.

5. Les’ family moved when he was two years old. When he was eight years he received his first harmonica from a worker digging a ditch in the neighborhood (the home no longer exists): 320 St. Paul Avenue.

6. As a teen Les Paul created his first solid body electric guitar with a two foot piece of discarded train rail that he and his friends found under the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge over the Fox River.

7. Les’ father, George, was part owner of the car dealership, The Polfuss-Hins Motor Co. (the building no longer exists): 456 W. Main Street.

8. George Polsfuss was proprietor of Waukesha’s Schlitz Hotel from 1918 to 1919 (now Gen 5 restaurant): 294 W. Main Street.

9. Les often rode his bicycle down Main Street, where he bought his first microphone at a shop located at Waukesha’s Five Points.

10. To promote his car dealership, George, drove his car around Waukesha, often with Les in the front seat. Rides frequently ended at Goff’s Restaurant for lemon meringue pie (now Mia’s Italian Cuisine): 800 Clinton Street.

11. As a youth, Les performed many times in what is now Cutler Park’s Les Paul Performance Center: 321 Wisconsin Avenue. At 11 years old, Les had a newspaper route. While sitting on an Indian mound in the park preparing his newspapers, he learned about crystal radios from a fellow carrier. Les quickly built his own radio.

12. Les attended Waukesha Junior High School and Waukesha High School. The two buildings are now connected and known as Les Paul Middle School-Central Campus: 400 N. Grand Avenue. The historic names are on the buildings, look for the junior high sign on Maple Avenue and the high school sign on Grand Avenue.

13. When Les’ father and brother, George and Ralph, bought Club 400 they designed the bar in the shape of a guitar – which still can be seen today. The club was where Les and his wife Mary Ford played their guitars together in public for the first time: 322 Williams Street.

14. Les Paul chose to be buried next to his mother at Prairie Home Cemetery. The memorial includes his biography and seats for visitors: 605 S. Prairie Avenue.

15. The Les Paul House of Sound at Discovery World in Milwaukee showcases Les’ Wisconsin beginnings to his world travels, innovating and experimenting at every stop. Explore creativity, experimentation, historic guitars, inventions, songs and the future to find the Les Paul in you: 500 N. Harbor Drive.

In 2012 Gibson Guitar chose Waukesha, birth and resting place of guitar legend Les Paul, for its nationally acclaimed public arts project, GuitarTown, where 10 foot fiberglass guitar sculptures and playable guitars are artistically designed and displayed within the community. Waukesha

was chosen for an encore celebration in 2013 that broadened the walking tour to include not only more guitar sculptures and playable guitars, but murals as well. Other Gibson GuitarTown cities include Los Angeles, Cleveland, Miami, Orlando, Austin, Nashville and London.

WAUKESHA, WISCONSIN

COME MEET OUR SURPRISING CITY

“QUIRKY.” “ECLECTIC.” “DIVERSE.”FOLKS TRY USING ALL SORTS OF WORDS TO DESCRIBE WAUKESHA, NONE OF WHICH FULLY CAPTURES IT

It’s where the flavor of a big city comes together with the hospitality of a small town. And that’s exactly how we like it.

After all, Waukesha is a little out-of-the-ordinary. And far beyond what you might expect. Just 20 minutes down the interstate west of Milwaukee, Waukesha is located at the intriguing intersection of the old and the new, the historic and the hip, the quaint and the contemporary. It’s what makes the city such an unforgettable place to discover and explore.

Page 23: 2015 Visitor's Guide

22WAUKESHA PEWAUKEE | 262-542-0330 | visitwaukesha.org

Take our downtown area, for instance. Here you can walk down a street of stately buildings more than a century old. But turn into a doorway and you may find a modern boutique, artsy eatery or offbeat café. Take a quick stroll from our bustling business district and you may happen upon a tranquil park nestled beside a picture-book river.

Waukesha holds other surprises in store, as well. For instance, there’s the fact that we’re the seventh-largest city in Wisconsin. Just big enough to offer “big city” attractions like luxury accommodations, a wide range of restaurants and exciting things to do, but small enough to know how to treat our guests. Big enough to boast our own airport, enchanting riverwalk, weekly farmers’ market and concert series each summer, small enough to keep most attractions just an easy stroll away.

Something else you may not know? Waukesha was the birthplace of the legendary Les Paul, the inventor of the solid body guitar (and some would say, in the process, Rock ‘n’ Roll.)

Outside of town, still more surprises await your discovery. Perhaps it’s the lush green of a tree-lined fairway on one of our highly rated golf courses. Maybe it’s the stirring quiet of the woods waiting down one of our scenic hiking trails. Or maybe it’s something only you’ll know once you find it.

ALL THIS, AND MORE, IS WAUKESHA – WHERE YOU’LL MEET A GREAT TIME, AND HOPEFULLY, A GREAT MANY MORE TIMES.

It’s a good thing Waukesha Pewaukee offers so many fun ways to work up an appetite. Because the area offers even more delectable ways to satisfy it.

We start — where else? — with breakfast. It’s not just the most important meal of the day, it may also be the tastiest. Especially when it’s cooked to order and served with freshly brewed coffee, like you’ll find at any number of inviting coffee shops, cafés and locally owned restaurants.

Of course, while you’re enjoying your morning meal, you may also want to discuss the other tempting dining options you’ll want to enjoy during your stay. The eateries along Pewaukee Lake serve up scenic views as enticing as their menu offerings. But there’s always the trendy bistros in town folks rave about, too. Or just kick back and enjoy a burger at one of several pubs and burger joints. You really can’t go wrong.

If you’ve got a taste for ethnic dining, you’ve got a whole world of choices. You’ll find authentic Mexican and German restaurants, along with Italian, Asian-fusion and sushi, Greek and more. Of course, for a real taste of Wisconsin, try one of our classic American supper clubs and reserve Friday evening for a fish fry! And save room for dessert at a local custard stand or ice cream shoppe!

One thing’s for sure. With all the dining choices available to you, anything you crave is met with the tastiest of satisfactions.
