A’ala Dog Park in the Planning Stages
Aloha from the A‘ala Dog Park Association!
As fellow dog park supporters, we wanted to share our project with you for a proposed dog park in Chinatown Honolulu. Our main objective is to provide a community gathering place for dog owners in the Chinatown and Downtown Honolulu area.
The proposed location for the A‘ala Dog Park bor-ders Nu‘uanu Stream, and is situated within walking distance of most residential apartment buildings and businesses in the Chinatown area. The park would be adja-cent to the existing park-ing lot and a well-used skate park.
The timing for this project is great because TOD (Transit Oriented Development) and the City and County of Honolulu are priori-tizing revitalization of A‘ala Park and the surrounding Riverwalk area along Nu‘uanu Stream. We are grateful to have the support of the City and County of Honolulu to move forward in finding sponsors for materials and construction of the dog park. We recently received our first in-kind donation from HONBLUE, for promotional printing purposes.
We are now in the phase of looking for potential sponsors (and preferably, in-kind donations) of the following items:
• Fencing and Installation
• Gates (4)
• Park Benches (2)
• Cement Pads (4)
• Water Fountains (2)
• Park Signage
We are working on establishing our 501(c)(3) status to ensure donations will be tax-deductible for our generous sponsors. If you would like more infor-mation or would like to help out, please call Cathy at (808) 778-7970 or email [email protected]. You can also reach us and get more info via our Face-book page - www.facebook.com/AalaDogPark
And please sign our online petition at

(You can also link to the petition from our Facebook page.) We need to gather more signatures on our online petition and will very much appreciate your par-ticipation. Mahalo!

Hawaii Kai Dog Park Updates
Mahalo to the morning dog park users who have been trimming back the Nau-paka plants along the ewa fence line, and to the evening park users who have been pulling sticky weeds from the grass. Your dogs are so happy to play at the dog park, and they are grateful to you for helping to take good care of it. Their little paws especially thank you for getting rid of those pesky stickers!
The weeds growing in the Plumbago along the Keahole Street fence line were choking the beautiful plants and threat-ening to kill them. Getting rid of those weeds was a big job, so Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i decided to hire a gardening company to clear all the weeds out of the Plumbago. The work was completed in early Au-gust.
We expect to have a BIG announcement in our next newsletter but we’ll give you a big hint right now. When we notified everyone last year that we would be ter-minating our Adopt-a-Park agreement at the end of 2015, we told the Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) that we would do our best to find another non-profit organization to adopt the dog park. Since then, one of our current board members decided to form his own non-profit with the intention of applying to DPR to be the new Adopt-a-Park part-ner. While this process has not been completed, we expect that it will be with-in a few more weeks. Stay tuned!

The Advocates for a Makiki Dog Park are tentatively scheduled
to present their revised dog park proposal at the September 17
meeting of the Makiki Neighborhood Board. If you live in the
area, please consider attending the meeting at Makiki District
Community Park to show your support for a Makiki Dog Park.
For more information, you can visit the Neighborhood Board
agenda page.

DR Horton is building a dog park as part of its new Mehana
development in Kapolei. It is unknown at this time if it will be
open to the general public. But even if it’s only for residents,
this is a significant and positive trend. Every dog park that is
built, especially by developers, helps to reinforce how important
it is to have places where people and their dogs can exercise,
socialize, and be an integral part of the community.

Dog Park Rules & Regulations
All City/County dog parks on Oahu are governed by the rules and
regulations established by the Department of Parks & Recreation.
You will find a very big blue sign at the entrance to city dog parks with
these posted rules. At the Hawaii Kai Dog Park, a brochure is also
available next to the bulletin board, and the City’s rules & reg’s are
enclosed as an insert. Please feel free to take a brochure.
1. Off-leash parks are for dogs, their handlers and those accompanying
them. No other use is allowed.
2. Dogs must be on leash when entering and exiting the off-leash park.
3. No handlers shall have more than two dogs under his/her control.
4. Handlers shall maintain voice control over the dog at all times.
5. Handlers must have control and must carry a leash while their dogs
are in the off-leash park.
6. Dogs must be free of diseases and parasites such as fleas and ticks.
7. No dogs in estrus/heat are allowed in the off-leash park.
8. All dogs are required to wear a valid current dog license tag attached
to the dog's collar.
9. All persons entering an off-leash park enters the off-leash park at his
or her own risk. The City is not liable to any person or dog for any
injury of harm incurred or caused by any other person or dog enter-
ing or remaining in the off-leash park.
10. Handlers shall carry equipment for the removal and disposal of dog
feces.
11. Handlers shall pick up and dispose of any and all feces left by the
dog.
12. Handlers shall be eighteen years of age or older.
13. Minors under the age of eighteen shall not be allowed in the off-leash
park unless under the control and supervision of an adult.
14. Handlers shall immediately leash and remove the dog from the park
if the dog exhibits aggressive behavior towards other park users or
other dogs.
15. No food or animal snacks are permitted in the off-leash park.
16. All persons entering the off-leash park shall comply with all depart-
mental rules and regulations, city ordinances and signs posted in the
park.
17. Handlers must stop their dogs from digging and must fill all holes dug
up by the dog(s) under their control
Please take special note of these regulations so you and your dog can
both enjoy a trouble-free dog park:
D If your dog doesn’t have a current license, you can get a license appli-
cation at any Satellite City Hall or at the Hawaiian Humane Society.
D Ensure your dog is on a flea and
tick prevention program. Check
with your vet to make sure your
dog’s vaccinations are up to date.
D Remember that food or snacks are
not allowed in the park (for peo-
ple or dogs). Many dogs will fight
over food dropped on the ground,
even if they are well-behaved and
friendly the rest of the time. Dogs
may also jump on you, or even bite
you, in an attempt to get at food or
treats that you are carrying.
D You are legally responsible for your
dog’s behavior. If you are not sure
how your dog will react to a large
number of strange dogs or people,
the dog park is not the place to find
out. Consult a trainer or behavior
specialist. Arrange “practice ses-
sions” in a more controlled setting.
Hurricane Season is Upon Us.
Include your Pets in your Dis-
aster Preparedness Plans
D ID your pet. License, chip, ID tag.
D Make a disaster kit (see link be-
low).
D Find a safe place to stay ahead of
time where your pets will be al-
lowed to go with you.
D If you evacuate, take your pet. If
it’s not safe for you at home, it’s
not safe for your pet either.
D Never leave your dog outdoors
during a hurricane or storm.
D Have a crate big enough for your
dog to stand and turn around.
D Find a trusted neighbor, friend, or
family member to go and get your
pet if you’re in a situation where
you can’t get home.

Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i - Who Are We?
Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i is a 501(c)(3) non-
profit corporation that was estab-
lished to promote public dog parks
and to promote responsible dog
ownership.
Its officers and directors receive no
compensation. Activities of the or-
ganization are carried out with the
help of volunteers and sponsors.
Our first objective was to make the
Hawai'i Kai Dog Park a reality. Now
that the park is open, we help to
support it through the City’s Adopt-a
-Park program. We also reach out
to help other dog groups who are
trying to establish dog parks in their
respective communities.
We support organizations, publica-
tions, and activities that promote
responsible dog ownership by en-
couraging licensing, vaccination,
exercise, socialization, and the good
behavior training of dogs using hu-
mane training methods.
