CROSS COUNTRY CURRENTS Circle-Lets, Inc. Winter 2015 Greeting My Circle-Let Sisters, T ime just seems to fly by! At our Christmas party, I was rem- iniscing with my chapter sisters about the wonderful time we had at the Dallas Conclave and now it’s time to think about going to Boston. I hope as you are making your summer travel plans that you consider joining us for lobster, clam chowder and the Freedom Trail. But before we get there, I want to share with you some exciting developments. There is a quote that says “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” These words describe the efforts of the Executive Committee and the following three special committees: • The Technology Committee, chaired by Stephanie Browne, will launch the new website this spring. With this enhanced system, you will be able to register for Conclave online, if you choose. We will have a training session at Conclave for chapter secretaries and treasurers to learn how to change member profiles and produce next year’s chapter reports and rosters. • The Jewelry/ Vendor Committee, chaired by Jakki Allen, had our jewelry mold updated and will have a select number of vendors at Conclave. • The By-Law committee, chaired by Yvonne Robinson, will have completed the review of our Rules, Regulations and Procedures. Any changes will be sent to Chapters for consideration and voted upon at Conclave. I invite you to attend the 2015 Conclave and witness their determination. In November, I attended the 50th anniversary of the Pittsburgh Chapter. Chair Cecile Springer and President Rhonda Wade planned a fun and congenial evening. The ladies were glamour, the men were handsome, the conversations were interesting, the food was delicious and the music was enter- taining. Adventuresome, energetic and friendly are three wordsto describe Pittsburgh Circle-Let Cecile Kennedy

Springer. In this issue, we’ll learn more about our pastNational Circle-Let President (1971-73) Cecile.

Circle-Let Cecile was a charter member of the Pittsburghchapter, which celebrated their 50th anniversary in Nov-ember. According to Cecile, “conclaves are great to makenew Circle-Lets friends and reconnect with past acquaintances”. When attending a con-clave she seeks out the opportunity to share time and learn more about different Circle-Lets from across the country. For those who attended the Pittsburgh conclave in 2012, weexperienced the result of Cecile’s leadership. As the Conclave Chairperson with her chap-ter, the Pittsburgh conclave was another memorable experience for Circle-Lets.

As a strategic planner in Cecile’s career at Westinghouse, she became the President of theWestinghouse Foundation. These skills were utilized in her Circle-Let presidency whenshe started the tradition of the Executive Board meeting to convene in the spring and notduring a conclave. Circle-Let Springer’s goal was to connect and to learn about Circle-Lets across the country. The first Executive Board meeting was held in Chicago where thechapter members extended their hospitality to the Board with a party and a great time. This tradition continues with the annual National Executive Board meeting usually in thehost city of the National President. Cecile wanted chapters to understand each other so herExecutive Committee represented all geographical corners of our Circle-Let membership.

As a world traveler visiting many different cities across the globe, Circle-Let Cecile andCircle-Mate Eric made a goal in 1999 to annually travel outside of the US. Their most re-cent travel adventure in October took them to Iceland.

Golf is another passion of Cecile’s. She and Circle-Mate Eric are avid golfers. Cecile’sgolfing skills have earned her many awards and moments of pleasure. When Circle-LetCecile is not on the golf course or traveling, she is involved in politics. She was chair ofthe most recent Pittsburgh mayoral campaign, volunteered with the Pennsylvania governor’scampaign, and currently is involved in the judicial campaigns of several women. Brooklyn,New York is Circle-Let Springer’s hometown. She earned a B.S. degree in chemistry,

M.S. in biochemistry from Wesllesley College and a M.S. in environmental land use andstrategic planning from the University of Pittsburgh. Cecile and her husband have beenmarried for 56 years and are the proud parents of a son, daughter and 5 grandchildren.

Like many Circle-Lets, Cecile belongs to other social groups and organizations; however,Circle-Lets holds a special place in her heart because of the small number of membersand friendly nature of the membership. While attending your next conclave, expand yourCircle-Let circle by seeking out conversation with another Circle-let as Circle-Let Ceciledoes. Hopefully, your paths will cross with Circle-Let Cecile.

Spotlight on Circle-Let Mothers and Daughters in the CircleOur spotlight of Mothers and Daughters continues in this issue.

Thanks to all who have shared their stories.

Circle-Let Arnetta Davie Hamilton(Nashville) and Mother, Circle-Let Ruth Parker Martin

My becoming aCircle-Let in 1983was expected ofme. As a youngchild I wasaround Circle-Let's activitiesconstantly, evenattending Con-claves with mymom and enjoy-ing many of theplanned children'sactivities.

Several reflections of moments which I shared with my Momin Circle-Lets were working with my mom planning and ex-ecuting chapter activities and hosting two Conclaves inNashville.

Tribute to the Late Circle-Let Vida Carson(Philadelphia Charter Member)

By Daughter Circle-Let Carol Carson (Philadelphia)

My Mom was one of the original members of thePhiladelphia Chapter of theCircle-Lets. Many of the NewYear’s parties and Christmasluncheons were held at ourhome. I grew up watchingthose beautiful ladies share

and enjoy each other’s company. I saw them band togetherwhen one had a problem and rejoice when there was a specialevent. I think what stood out the most was the friendship, abetter word would be sisterhood these women shared for alifetime. I always knew I would be a part of this special circle.Growing up I did not have sisters but being a part of the Cir-cle-Lets as a child and young lady gave me more aunts thanyou can imagine and being a Circle-Let surrounds me in a cir-cle of love and sisterhood I wish every woman could enjoy.

Circle-Let Candyce W. Wilson (Philadelphia)and Mother, JoAnn Bradley (Philadelphia)

I grew up in Nashville,TN in a house full ofCircle-Lets activity. My most special Cir-cle-Lets momentscame years before everbecoming a Circle-Letmyself. It was watch-ing the love and cama-raderie between the women of the Nashville Chaptermonth-after-month and year-after-year. Those memories lefta warm and indelible mark on my memory. Years after settlingin the Philadelphia area with my husband (Mel) and sons(Melvin and Connor), my mother, Circle-Let JoAnn Bradley, located to Philadelphia, transferred her membership to thePhiladelphia Chapter and began enjoying the new friendshipsshe made in this chapter. After living in Nashville for 40+years, the Philadelphia Circle-Lets greeted her with open armsand helped make her transition smooth. Mom later asked ifI'd like to join the Philadelphia Circle-Lets and rememberingthe fun and friendship I'd witnessed throughout my child-hood, I didn't hesitate to say yes! She presented me as a newmember in 2006 and I have been enjoying my membershipand building my own special Circle-Let moments with thewonderful women of the Philadelphia Chapter ever since.

Circle-Let Lori Duke (Washington, DC) andMother, Circle-Let Dolores Duke (Washington, DC)

Circle-Lets has been a part ofmy life since I was in ele-mentary school. I witnessedthe close friendships amongall the members whom Iconsidered to be my playaunts. As an adult, I enjoyedattending Circle-Let teas andholiday luncheons as a guest.I was thrilled when I received an invitation to become a mem-ber. My mother and I look forward to attending meetings to-gether each month, social events, and conclaves. The bondbetween a mother and daughter is very special, particularlywith the added bond of friendship.

DALLASBy Jennifer Clark

“Glitz, Glamour and All That Shimmers” set the tone for Conclave 2014 in Dallas. Every Circle-Let and Circle-Matewho attended was a precious jewel to the host chapter and wastreated with very special care. We enjoyed seeing so many “oldfriends” and making many new friends during that fun, filled week-end. From Thursday through Sundayfriendships, libations, food and shopping were the agenda for each day. Yes, Big-D had it goin’ on!

The chapter had much to celebrate after hosting the national conclave in July. So, to continue the fun and love that began at the Conclave we decided to end the year with a “to die for” Christmas party.

This year the Dallas Circle-Lets had the privilege of beginning the holiday season in a winter wonderland at thelovely home of Circle-Let Yvonne and Circle-Mate MarvinRobinson for an elegant Christmas dinner party.

Members began the evening with good conversation, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and the great music of the Temptations’ Christmas. Dinner was served followed by a gift exchange, games and holiday mementoes for all.

Applause and thank you’s were extended to our host and hostess for inviting members and guests into their

home for such a warm, elegant and memorably fun evening.

After the induction of our new members, President PamelaGray, continued to motivate our chapter to focus on Conclave2020, which our chapter is hosting. We had begun to thinkabout the task as our outgoing, vivacious leader, Michelé Min-nix, left office after two exciting and productive terms.

The Scope on Circle-Let JewelryBy Jackki Allen (Columbus) Jewelry & Vendors Chair

The Circle-Let Jewelry is currently under construction with a local jewelry designer in Columbus. I must say I have learned a lot and with technology, we will be able to have the mold to be utilizedanywhere. The construction of the pendant will be a lot more defined and a cleaner cut. Once wehave the mold completed we will be able to send cost information (which may fluctuate depending onthe cost of gold and silver). Our goal is to have pendants for sale available at the convention in Boston.I apologize to any members who wanted to purchase during the transition of selecting a new jeweler.
