At the Y, we don’t just promise lasting change. We deliver it.

For more than 140 years, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee has kept its promise to make the community we call home stronger. What began with a few men coming together for the common good in a growing city is today the nation’s eighth-largest YMCA, reaching more than 268,000 individuals in 2015. Our network of family wellness centers and out-of-school-time programs continue to offer safe, welcoming environments that foster long-term holistic well-being for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Why do we do it? Because we believe it takes more than treadmills and tracks to be healthy. Our Christian mission calls us to help the whole person—in spirit, mind and body. You’ll find fitness equipment in our wellness centers that is similar to what you’ll find at other like providers, but you’ll also find a lot more. You’ll find childwatch areas where infants and toddlers are learning through play while their parents work out. You’ll find prayer request boxes that hold the struggles and hopes and needs of our members. You’ll find group fitness classes that are more like families—where members support each other and notice when a regular isn’t there. You’ll find senior citizens gathered for the coffee and conversation that offer the antidote to social isolation. You’ll find adult mentors helping youth get a head start on homework. You’ll find a community of people who care—who care about one another, who care about their neighbors and who care about the future we’re building for our children. That’s the essence of the Y. Always has been. Always will be.

To the volunteers, donors, members and staff who are a part of that caring community, we offer our sincere thanks. You are true partners in potential and we could not accomplish our mission without you, and we hope this Annual Report reminds you of what is possible when we work together to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve health and well-being and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors in need.

Thank you for your continued support of our YMCA and the individuals and families we serve.

Blessings,

Dan DummermuthPresident & CEO

Bill Lee Association Board Chair

Nurturing the Potential of Youth and TeensAt the Y, we’re deeply committed to the well-being of our community’s kids. We believe every child—regardless of

income level or background—should feel safe, supported and empowered to reach their full potential.

From the swimming pool to the sports field, summer camp to our welcoming teen centers, more than 81,000 youthacross Middle Tennessee rely on the Y to learn critical life skills, explore their passions and build confidence—qualities

they’ll need to succeed today and make our community stronger for generations to come.

Why It Matters Growing up is tough. Each day, our youth and teens face obstacles that can interfere with their safety,

academic performance and physical and emotional development.

Helping Members Reach Their Healthiest Potential At the Y, we believe the fight against our region’s most pressing health issues can only be won with a

holistic approach that supports each individual’s physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being. For us, that starts and ends with providing facilities and programs that welcome people of every background,

income level and stage in their journey to better health.

From encouraging group exercise and personal training to reliable child care for families and special programsfor at-risk populations, we’re helping more than 227,000 members across Middle Tennessee make healthy

Giving All People the Potential to Thrive In an increasingly disconnected, isolated world, the Y remains a place where people of all ages, abilities and

backgrounds can come together. When members from all walks of life walk through our doors, they’re invited into a safe, supportive environment that values learning, healthy living and community—all the things we need to truly thrive.

With 15 welcoming facilities and more than $6.3 million in financial assistance provided annually, the Y works tocreate a place where everyone can belong—from families and seniors to kids with special needs and those facing

financial hardship. By providing access for all, we’re building a stronger, more connected community.

among the disenfranchised and the elderly—puts individuals at greater risk for chronic disease, depression,

stress and unhealthy behaviors

Nearly 18% of Tennesseanslive below the poverty line

More than 19% of Tennessee’s rapidly aging population is 60

and older—a figure projected to increase to 24% in the next 15 years

2015 FINANCIAL SUMMARY2015 was a rebuilding year for our YMCA, and one during which we continued to see the positive results of the difficult but necessary decisions to restructure our membership operations over the past three years. Four locations were closed during 2015, including the Donelson Tennis Center, Harding Place, North Clarksville, and Rutherford County YMCAs. In spite of closing ten locations since 2013—a 40% reduction of our capacity—we retained 90% of our Association-wide membership base. We also restructured our long-term debt in 2015 to extend repayment terms, lock in historically low interest rates, and renegotiate financial covenants.

Total revenue declined from 2014 by $2.4 million, a decrease of 3%. The decrease was concentrated in Membership (-5.5%) and Program Fees (-4.1%), but was partially offset by a 10.26% increase in Contributions. The closure of four additional deficit membership centers combined with other cost control initiatives resulted in total expenses that were $5.8 million less than last year; personnel expenses accounted for $4.3 million of the savings. Interest expense was $0.3 million less than last year due to the partial-year impact of the debt restructuring.

The Association’s 2015 EBIDA (Earnings before Interest, Depreciation, and Amortization) was $11.7 million, an improvement of $3.4 million over 2014. Financial performance in 2015 would have been even stronger but for the restructuring costs associated with the center closings. We incurred $2.3 million in restructuring expenses and weathered net operating losses of $964,000 from the closed locations.

The outlook for 2016 and beyond is very encouraging. The 2016 Operating Budget forecasts Operating Net Income of $1.46 million. The budget also calls for reserve replenishment of at least $3.0 million, with $1.25 million coming from Operations and the remainder coming from the proceeds from sales of the closed facilities. We are also reinvesting in our greatest asset, our people, through merit increases for staff, increased training and development, and support of existing and new positions that support our strategic plan and demonstrate a satisfactory return on investment. Major facility improvements are currently under way at the Donelson, Franklin, and Margaret Maddox membership centers. The staff and volunteers are focused on building upon the momentum generated during 2015 to continually strengthen the Association financially to ensure that the Y will serve our community for decades to come.

Order of the Red Triangle

Bill LeeSince its founding, the YMCA has relied on the support and leadership of volunteers to advance its Christian mission. In keeping with our longstanding tradition of honoring those individuals who have worked tirelessly on our nonprofit’s behalf, it is the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s distinct honor and privilege to present its highest volunteer honor, the Order of the Red Triangle, to Bill Lee.

Bill joined the YMCA of Middle Tennessee board of directors in 2008 and brought with him a passion for the Y’s efforts to help young people in our community overcome obstacles and circumstances to discover their true potential. As a longtime supporter of Y-CAP and the east Nashville youth who take part in its programs, Bill has been a true champion for positive youth development in our community.

Bill’s involvement with the Y only deepened over time, and in 2014, he was named Association Board Chair, taking the helm as our chief volunteer officer at a pivotal time in our YMCA’s history. His Christ-centered leadership was a source of constant strength and resolve during and following the execution of a financial sustainability plan which included a significant restructuring of our membership and program operations, further fortifying our Y’s ability to continue serving our community for generations to come.

For nearly 25 years, Bill served as president of Lee Company, the business his grandfather founded in 1944. In addition to presiding as the company’s chairman today, he is also president of Tennesseans for Economic Growth and serves on the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and as a member of the Belmont University Board of Trustees.

Bill is a native of Franklin, Tenn., where he now lives on a cattle farm with his wife, Maria. A proud father of four and grandfather of two, Bill continues to be involved with a number of faith-based ministries, living out his faith daily, constantly striving to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award

Cal Turner Jr. In 2015, the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee presented its highest honor, the H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award, to Scottsville, Ky. native and retired Dollar General Chairman Cal Turner Jr.

Cal has supported the Y not only as a major donor, but also as Board Chair and as an invaluable advisor to our YMCA’s senior staff. During his term as Association Board Chair in 2006-2007, he presided over a period of growth that included the development of our year-round overnight camp at the Joe C. Davis YMCA Outdoor Center, to which his family’s foundation was a major contributor. His philanthropic leadership was also instrumental in the construction of our Bellevue Family YMCA and FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center, which opened in 2006, and in prior years, his family helped establish a YMCA in Scottsville, Ky., which now serves as a community-operated wellness center. Cal embodies the true spirit of the H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award, and his generosity extends far beyond the doors of the YMCA. As chairman of the Cal Turner Family Foundation, he has spearheaded some of the community’s most innovative gifts, including gifts to establish endowed fellowships at Vanderbilt’s Divinity School, construct the Cal Turner Family Center at Meharry Medical College and fund the Turner Fellows program at Franklin Road Academy to engage students in service-learning opportunities.

Much like the manner in which he transformed the dry goods company his father and grandfather founded in 1939, Cal Turner Jr. continues to transform lives through his charitable giving. It is, therefore, the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee’s distinct honor to celebrate his generosity and servant leadership by naming him an H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award recipient.

Kelvin Ault 2015 Brentwood Family YMCAVolunteer of the Year

Since joining the Brentwood YMCA advisory board in 2009, Kelvin has served in multiple leadership roles, the most recent being board chair in 2015 and 2016. Over the years, Kelvin has continually given generously, and without hesitation, of his time, talent and treasure, while also taking every opportunity to advocate for the Y by telling our story. He is the epitome of a servant leader with a caring heart dedicated to helping others. I am not only deeply appreciative for his support of the YMCA but also for his wonderful friendship. – Steve Saxton

Kimberlyn & Justin Perkins 2015 Center for Civic Engagement Volunteers of the Year

Kimberlyn and Justin give countless hours of their time and talent to our Center for Civic Engagement every year. It’s hard to narrow down the important role they play in the success of our programs because there’s nothing they can’t or won’t do to ensure our thousands of participants have an exceptional experience. Whether it’s working with the lobbyists at Youth in Government, manning the information desk at Model United Nations or filling up countless water balloons for our Leadership Conference, the Perkins do it with smiles and servant hearts. – Susan Moriarty

Rebecca Robinson 2015 Christ Church YMCA Volunteer of the Year

Rebecca’s arrival onto our board is nothing short of God’s plan. She came in during a year of transition, during which our board chair resigned mid-year. Even before she took on the role of board chair, Rebecca took ownership of the board’s direction and began leading. She helped recruit passionate and engaged volunteers to join our cause, and when she officially took the helm as chair in December, she wasted no time in creating a detailed plan for a successful Annual Giving Campaign, which she also volunteered to lead. Her heart and passion for helping people is matched only by her drive to accomplish our goals. In addition to serving as board and campaign chair, she leads a moms’ Bible study group every Friday at our Y, fostering relationships between new and old moms alike, while calling the group to serve the local community. Rebecca is a very special person, and our Y and community are lucky and proud to have her. – Ryan Spiehler

Tony’s involvement with the Franklin Family YMCA began in 2011 when he joined our board. He is very active and engaged in many Y initiatives and activities and is the current Board Development Chair. Tony has secured thousands of dollars for our Annual Giving Campaign, is a very active recruiter of volunteers and is one of our most passionate advocates. During the transition of staff leadership at the Franklin Y, Tony played a vital role in the search for a new Executive Director, and he continues to support me by connecting me to valuable resources and individuals in the Franklin community. His commitment to the Y extends to his family, too, as his wife, Kalinda, and their daughters have all volunteered and participated in many YMCA programs. The Franklin Family Y is truly blessed to have Tony as a volunteer and friend! – Drew Freeman

Norah Buikstra 2015 Green Hills Family YMCA Volunteer of the Year

I received an email from Norah recently, and she ended it with “your partner in service, Norah.”This simple closing is exactly what Norah is—our partner in service. It is her selfless service that has earned her the distinction of being our Volunteer of the Year for 2015. She was very involved in every philanthropic event throughout the year including chairing our Breakfast of Champions committee. In addition, she always knows the right time to love on our staff when they need a pick-me-up. Simply put, Norah exemplifies the YMCA’s values and is a wonderful ambassador. We are so fortunate to have her as a part of our Green Hills YMCA family. – Andy White

Jayna Harley2015 Joe C. Davis YMCA Outdoor Center Volunteer of the Year

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Jayna. Her dedication to our kids and enhancing their experience inspired her to lead the effort to fund the Widji Kitchen program. Our initial goal was to enroll 40 kids, but more than 120 campers had the opportunity to build kitchen skills and gain hands-on cooking experience in our first year. The popularity of the program led to the creation of our garden program, a greenhouse and the new Widji Farm Camp. Thank you, Jayna, for putting the kids first and being a great example to board members everywhere of how one idea and a little bit of passion and effort can create so much. – Jeff Merhige

Judy Goodwin 2015 YMCA School Age Services Volunteer of the Year

Mrs. Goodwin is one of the strongest advocates and supporters of our YMCA School Age Services programs. Barfield Elementary, where she serves as principal, is not only open to our Y as a school-year site, but also during the summer, on snow days and during school breaks. Despite us offering to utilize other sites to give her school a break from our summer and school break programs, she always refuses, noting the importance of our work and the service we provide to the community. Over the years, Mrs. Goodwin has also welcomed our staff into the school for various trainings and other events as needed. Her support and commitment to the YMCA certainly goes above and beyond the call of duty for a principal and administrator. We are honored to have her as a partner in nurturing the potential of the children we serve. – Rico X

She truly empowers others by living the YMCA mission. – Jeremy Tackett
