Chanukah is here. In days of old, as we do today, our people celebrated the miracle of the season by lighting the Hanukiyah and reciting blessings. This joyous time is a rebellion against nature, counterintuitive to the human experience. The world is growing dark. We celebrate light. Winter is cold. Chanukah brings us warmth. We want to hunker down in our blankets and wait out the season hoping for spring. Chanukah brings us together at Temple to celebrate being alive with our family and friends.
The customs of Chanukah are beautiful and happy-making. But underneath it all is the concept of miracles, these aberrations of nature. Whether we believe that the victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Greeks is a great miracle - or whether we believe that the little jar of oil burned for eight days when there was only enough light for one day - or whether we believe that the world is fixed in its order, yet God somehow finds a way to insert God’s self into human affairs (or not), miracles pose a theological conundrum for many Jews.
Rabbi MilleR

Wonder of Wonder, Miracles of Miracles
Chanukah Candle Lighting BlessingsOne candle is added to the menorah each night. The first night, you light only the
shammas (the one at a different height) and one Chanukah candle. By the eighth night, you light all of the candles.
Candles should be added to the menorah from right to left (like Hebrew writing).
I suggest that in our time and era, we should not search for miracles in the extraordinary events of our lives or the world about us. People who go searching for miracles are much like the people who search for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We know the rainbow is there. But the gold is our hope that we can never quite attain.
Judaism stresses the miracles that exist every-where through our daily lives. Our daily liturgy has a section called nissim b’chol yom, the miracles that are with us every day. Every day miracles: the miracles of breath, consciousness, growth, nature, beauty, health and healing—every day miracles that help us appreciate the miracu-lous nature of the world in which we live and our participation in it. So this Hanukkah, celebrate miracles. Celebrate the miracles of the great battles won, the lights lit against all odds, and the daily blessings (so many blessings!) that bless us each and every hour.
Keep the lights burning. See you at Temple,
Rabbi Jonathan Miller After reciting the blessings, use the shammas to light the Chanukah candles from left to right (newest to oldest). Candles should be left burning
until they go out on their own. They must burn for more than half an hour. Standard Chanukah candles burn for about an hour.

Sisterhood HappeningsAnother successful Bulb Shop in the booksOur annual bulb shop fundraiser is finished for the year, and Sisterhood would like to thank the following top salespeople (in order of sales): Loretta Newfield, Nancy Goedecke, Gayle Leitman, Dale Marcus, Sandra Berman, Connie Stein, Jane Davis, and Linda Applebaum. We’d also like to thank the following helpers, without whom our sale wouldn’t have been possible: Kim & Neil Roth, Loretta Newfield, Debra McClain, Melvin White, Marilyn Haver,Lisa Bebenek, Leah Leaf, Doris Kantor, Linda McMullen, Ilene Johnson and Denise Lewis.
And a big thank you to everyone who supported the sale by buying bulbs. This is our only fundraiser of the year and goes directly to support the women, children and families of Temple Emanu-El.
Our Opening Event for the Year was so much fun...we thought we’d include some pictures from our “It’s all about style”fashion show. The tablescapes were so creative, and the models so fabulous, we wanted to share these pictures. If you were unable to make it, here’s what you missed!

Thursday December 10 @ 5:00-7:00p.m. • The latkes will be judged by a team of celebrity chefs. • The winner will be presented with a “trophy” and a donation will be made to their favorite charity.
Temple Emanu-El’s team is Rabbi Laila Haas, Sherron Goldstein and Mackie Horowitz. The LJCC will also be serving Chanukah dinner during and after the competition and there will be Chanukah games provided by the Community Youth Group.

Designated & Unrestricted Funds benefiting Temple Emanu-EI
We greatly appreciate the tributes and contributions made to Temple Emanu~EI to honor friends and family, commemorate significant events and remember loved ones.
Your contributions to the Temple's "immediate use" funds help support our annual operations and fulfill special needs beyond the scope of what dues and tuition fees are able to provide - and gifts to our Endowment Funds help further build our Grafman Endowment Fund to provide perpetual/ permanent sources of income to enrich our congregation ... now and for generations to come.
