These effects reach far beyond the obvious pain and suffering of an individual child. Untreated early trauma impacts children’s brain development, their ability to learn in school and their ability to form healthy relationships. In addition, we know that childhood trauma can lead to devastating long-term health outcomes.

Studies have shown that victims of significant abuse, neglect or domestic violence are:

• 12 times more likely to attempt suicide

• 7 times more likely to be an alcoholic

• 5 times more likely to experience depression

• 76% more likely to require special education

• 60% more likely to have a juvenile arrest

• 28% more likely to have a criminal record

• Likely to earn on average $6,000 less per year.

These lifetime effects carry real costs to our community. It is estimated that a single case of child abuse or neglect costs more than $200,000 across a lifetime.

At CALM, we are working every day to prevent child abuse from occurring at all, and to identify it early and intervene when it does. We have built strong partnerships with preschools so that we are supporting optimal development in the early years. We are working to develop and expand partnerships with health care providers who treat young children because we know that children under three are at the greatest risk.

By reaching beyond the walls of our offices, beyond the homes of children and families we serve, we can create the social change necessary to support and strengthen all families. Our partnerships with schools, law enforcement, family resource centers and health care providers serve to create a web of caring for children throughout our County.

Every day, I am inspired by the work of CALM’s staff. I am equally inspired by the strong support we receive from our community. We could not do this vital work without you. Thank you for helping to strengthen families, build resilient children and nurture a resilience in Santa Barbara County.

AS YOU READ TH I S , I am almost one full year into my tenure as CEO

of CALM. Over the course of the past 11 months, I have learned so

much about the devastating impact of untreated childhood trauma.

Hello from our CEO

Alana Walczak

Every day, I am inspired by the work of CALM’s staff. I am equally inspired by the strong support we receive from our community.

One of my goals for CALM is to educate the community about the immense challenges CALM faces on a daily basis. Our county is no different from any other county in the nation, with the exception that we have resources like CALM to do something about children suffering from abuse, neglect, and trauma.

CALM not only provides therapy to help children heal from trauma, but we also wrap our arms around our families, supporting them with safety planning, accessing basic needs, and strengthening parenting in order to achieve the best possible outcomes. Many parents do not have the support they need to do their best for their children.

CALM is here to help.

We have big tasks ahead of us. Over the past fi ve years, we have increased the number of children and families we serve through expanded programs, and we still have waiting lists that are too long. We have begun to strategically develop an expanded infrastructure throughout the county to serve even more children who are seeking our help every day.

I look forward to partnering with you—our community, our donors, our supporters—to continue strengthening families in our county. Together, we can change the trajectory of our children’s lives.

I AM HONORED TO SERVE as CALM’s newest president. I am impressed

with the thoughtfulness, dedication, and professionalism that CALM staff

and CALM Board members bring to their work every day.

From our Board President

Dan MollCALM President, 2016-2017

CALM is here to help.Together, we can change the trajectory of our children’s lives.

We fondly remember Arlene Bergman, 1945-2016Arlene joined the CALM Board in 2013. She stepped into leadership right away, chairing the Marketing committee. She later joined the Executive Committee of the Board and she was serving on the CALM for Kids Campaign Cabinet. She cared deeply about the work of CALM. Arlene helped CALM think about how to tell stories and how to spread the word. We will miss her warmth, graciousness, and kind spirit.

Recognizing Donors Peggy and Dan Blough Peggy and Don have been married for over 40 years. They started their business in real estate development and construction, brokerage and lending in the late ’70s and after 35 years they sold Coldwell Banker Dan Blough & Associates to their partner in 2006. Peggy joined CALM’s North County Advisory Committee in 2013 and has played a pivotal role in introducing CALM to the Santa Maria philanthropic community. Together, she and Dan have hosted events for CALM and have introduced CALM to their friends and neighbors.

Recently, Peggy and Dan decided to do what they could to ensure that CALM would continue to serve the children of the Santa Maria Valley into the future. They put CALM into their estate plan. “It’s important to us to support charitable organizations that do the most good,” said Peggy. “By making CALM part of our estate plan, we know our gift will have a lasting impact in our community.”

CALM thanks Peggy and Dan for ensuring CALM’s future!

Peggy and Dan BloughChildren’s Legacy Society members

Thank you to these visionaries who have named CALM as the beneficiary of a

planned gift and helped to secure CALM’s future.

“I have been quiet for a long time about what I went through. I will not be silenced though. Tell someone—you are worth it. A good person doesn’t seek to destroy life and beauty in another.”
