    This course selection boo%let contains registration $rocedures, course descri$tions andcourse $rereBuisites. "elections should be made with a com$lete understanding of$rereBuisites and recommendations that may affect your high school $rogram.

    )lease do not select courses thin%ing you will Ctry itD and be able to move to the lowerlevel. Course changes in September or throughout the year will be very limited.Where changes are possible, they will be based on academic need and assessed on anindividual basis.

    WHAT IS THE SEMESTER SYSTEM?

    In the semester system, the school year is divided into two eBual semestersE "e$tember to(anuary and 4ebruary to (une. 4our courses are ta%en each semester. /ach course consistsof at least 110 hours of instruction. "tudents will write final exams at the end of eachsemester. "ome of the advantages of the semester system includeE@ "tudents study and do homewor% in only four subjects at a time.@ "tudents write only four exams at the end of each semester.@ "tudents have the o$$ortunity to ta%e a wider variety of courses to round out their$rogram.@ "tudents who fail reBuired courses are able to catch u$ without adding a year to their

    CREDIT SYSTEM

    & credit is awarded in recognition of the successful com$letion of an a$$roved course that

    would normally be com$leted in a minimum of 110 hours of scheduled time. /ach subject$assed is worth one credit.

    CREDIT TYPES

    &ll courses are identified with a credit ty$e. This information is located in the coursedescri$tion and is an im$ortant as$ect of course selection.  These definitions are develo$edby the *ova "cotia +e$artment of /ducation and students are encouraged to chec%university calendars for information on courses acce$table for admission.

    Academic &cademic courses are designed for students who ex$ect to enter college,university, or other $ost@secondary institutions.

    Advanced &dvanced courses are designed to meet the needs of students who havedemonstrated an exce$tional degree of academic ability or achievement.

    The $lacement of students in advanced courses reBuires the involvement ofthe schools )rogram )lanning team and the consultation of $reviousteachers. "tudents who exhibit mastery of s$ecific curriculum outcomesdesignated by their s$ecific grad levels Bualify for advanced credit.

    Graduation 5raduation courses are designed for students who wish to obtain agraduation di$loma with a view to $roceeding to em$loyment or some selected area of$ost@secondary study. *ormally, universities and similar institutions will not acce$t thesecourses to meet entrance reBuirement.

    Open &lthough none of the o$en courses is designed to meet the s$ecific entrance

    reBuirements of any $ost@secondary institution, individual courses may meet entrancereBuirements of some institutions. #hec% the institutionFs &cademic #alendar for s$ecificreBuirements for admission.

    "tudents who have already achieved the s$ecific outcomes designated for their s$ecific

    grade levelHs may wish to have their $rogram enriched. /nrichment for students at thesecondary school level means ta%ing &dvanced courses or enrichment clusters that focus onadvanced content and $rocesses within an identified disci$line for an extended $eriod oftime. The &dvanced #ertificate )rogram $rovides a structure for these students to $ursue.

    #reated by the Information and #ommunications Technology #ouncil HI#T#, 4IT is aninnovative $rogram that allows students to gain essential Information and #ommunicationTechnology HI#T and usiness s%ills while com$leting their !igh "chool +i$loma withoutta%ing any additional credits beyond their reBuired course load. The 4IT $rogram uses theregular high school courses in business, technology, and co@o$ to wor% in a team

    environment $artici$ating in hands@on learning $rojects. y com$leting the co@o$ wor%$lacement com$onents, students can ex$erience real wor% related ex$eriences inInformation Technology.

    The iverview 4ine &rts #ertificate is offered by &rts /ducation for students who see% a

    more enriched ex$erience in all of the arts. The arts include 3isual &rt, usic, +ance and+rama. To receive this certificate a student needs to ta%e < fine arts courses over their -years of high school. Three of the six must be from the same disci$line. The student mustalso com$lete a $ortfolio with various items in it that are com$leted outside of class time.

    GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

    "tudents registering in grade 10 will reBuire a minimum of 1? credits to graduate. *o more thanseven of the 1? credits may be for grade 10 courses, and at least five must be grade 12 courses. Thefollowing are the 1- com$ulsory credits reBuired for graduationE

     Language, Communication and Expression

    ¬ - /nglish language arts, one at each grade level¬ 1 fine artsE art, dance, drama, or music

    Science, Mathematics and Technology

    ¬ 2 mathematics¬ 2 scienceE one from biology, chemistry, integrated science, or $hysics, and one other a$$roved

    science course

    ¬ 2 other from mathematics, science, or technologyE eligible technology courses includeEusiness Technology 11 and 12J #ommunication Technology 11J #om$uter )rogramming 12J/x$loring Technology 10J )roduction Technology 11 and 12J and ultimedia 12.

     Personal Development and Society

    UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

    "tudents must realiGe that reBuirements for universities and other educational institutions varyconsiderably and are constantly subject to change. It is advisable to consult calendars freBuentlywhen ma%ing long range $lans. All universities re9uire at least ive Grade :$ and :$$ 7niversity

    &reparatory courses.  "ome universities Husually in 'ntario or the est reBuire si; 5rade KI andKII niversity )re$aratory subjects for entrance.

    &verages reBuired for entrance vary from 8L, and students are advised that, in manyinstances, $ossession of minimum reBuirements in no way guarantees acce$tance. This is $articularlytrue for s$ecialist di$lomas and limited enrollment $rograms.

    ost universities do not acce$t o$en courses for entrance. In addition, some academic courses arenot acce$table for $articular $rograms at some universities. &cce$tance of courses such as &rt,+rama, usic, "ociology, )hysical /ducation, 4amily "tudies, usic, :aw, etc., vary from oneeducational institution to another and students should consult the calendars of favoured institutions

    carefully before ma%ing final choices. In the $ast, some students who did not chec% admissionreBuirements incorrectly assumed that all courses that are labelled academic were recogniGed by alluniversities, and were subseBuently disa$$ointed when they were rejected by the university of theirchoice.  Not all academic courses meet specific requirements for entrance to university.

     Remember: Both grade 11 and 12 marks are very important for university entrance.

    In grade 12, the (une ran% is calculated using 10 courses. /nglish 12 and 5lobal 12 are included asthese are the only 2 courses &:: students are reBuired to ta%e. & minimum of 8 grade 12 coursesta%en during the graduating year and 8 other courses at the grade 11 or 12 level ta%en during anyschool year.     ¬ #onsider your $revious achievement in a subject area as well as interests when selectingcourses. +o not register for a course because your friends are. a%e decisions based on your

    individual needs and goals.

    ¬ & student must also consider wor% habits when ma%ing course selections H$articularly foradvanced courses. &lthough you may have ability in a certain subject you must be willing todo extra wor% and challenge yourself if you choose an advanced level course.

    ¬ 5raduation level courses are oriented more toward s%ills and %nowledge that are used ineveryday life. "tudents who struggle with academic wor% may ta%e graduation courses inorder to enter the wor% force or community college.

    REGISTRATION POLICIES

    1. "tudents will com$lete their registration form in arch. +ecisions on teacher assignments andstaff allocation are made on the basis of student course demands in arch. #hanges in coursereBuests lead to imbalances in class siGes which are unfair for students and teachers. It is veryim$ortant that careful selection of courses and subjects be made in arch.

    2. "tudents who have not attained a mar% of 80 or better in a subject are not $ermitted to registerin that subject at the next grade level. If it is a com$ulsory course Heg. /nglish, students mustre@register for that subject at the same level.
