Hiking in Utladalen

Walking/Hiking

If you wish to experience the valleys of Western Norway, from the valley floor down below to the highest mountain peaks, Årdal has much to offer.

Both Årdal Trekking Association and the Norwegian Trekking Association offer a network of well-marked trails, colour-coded according to the level of difficulty.

You are sure to find a trail that suits you. You can enjoy a simple walk to, for exam-ple, Vetti farm, or you can choose longer hikes and even climb the highest peak to get a bird’s eye view of the magnificent Sognefjord.

The mountains increase in height as you approach Jotunheimen in the east. By using Årdal or Utladalen as a base, you will have many options to explore some wonderful trails. En route, you will definitely find it worth your while to visit Utla-dalen Naturhus centre, to view the exhibitions and learn about the natural environ-ment and the cultural history of Western Jotunheimen.

In Utladalen, you have the option of following short or long trails, covering the whole distance or walking only part of the trail. The possibilities are endless! Some of the walks are suitable for the whole family, for example the walk up to Avdalen farm.

Those wanting more of a challenge in Årdal can walk to Kvitingsmorki or Kvernli, or take the Hjelledal valley walk. These walks take you through some steep ter-rain and require that you are physically fit and have some experience of mountain walking.

We hope you will have many excellent nature experiences in Årdal, and wish you pleasant stay!

Tindevegen tourist road- a shortcut through Jotunheimen

Tindevegen is the mountain road between Årdal and Turtagrø (32 km) and the short-est route when travelling between Bergen and Trondheim. This tourist road links Årdal to Luster and the Sognefjell National Tourist Route.

Tindevegen is usually open from May to mid-October, depending on the weather and driving conditions.

The mountain road takes you through some magnificent scenery between the beauti-ful peaks of Jotunheimen, offering many fine viewpoints. Just a short walk from the road, you get a panoramic view of the Hurrungane peaks and the Store Skagastøls-tind Mountain in the east, and the inner reaches of the Sognefjord and Skjolden in the west.

Tindevegen is a toll road, admitting private cars, camper vans and caravans (max length: 10 m).

Utladalen Adventure Camp

Utladalen Camping & Svalheim Gard, or Utladalen Adventure Camp as we like to callit, is located in Utladalen valley, a gateway to Jotunheimen. Utladalen are famous for its many great and beautiful waterfalls. Here, you will find the Hjelle waterfall, Avdalsfossen, Hyljafossen and Vettisfossen. Four good reasons why Utladalen is called the valley of waterfalls. In 2014, Vettisfossen was named the most beautiful waterfall in Norway. It has one of Europe’s highest unregulated free drops - 275 meters (909 feet)! With mountain peaks at Hurrungane in Jotunheimen, the Sognefjord and great tourist roads as Tindevegen, the Sognefjell route and Road 53 Tyin as our nearest neighbours, we believe that we have a greate base and starting point to offer our guests.

Accommondation:• Historic Svalheim Gard from 1893 can offer a great atmosphere.• Utladalen Camping offers cabins, caravan parking and a large tent area• Various activities

The first weekend in October, the ‘Haustmyldring’ Market includes concerts, fashion shows, a rubber duck race and shopping for special offers.
