The LoopSTUDENT MINISTRY STAFF The HUB 2015–2016

Welcome to The HUB

If you’re new to the HUB Student Ministry, we hope that this guide will help you get acquainted with all that we have to offer. In these pages, you will find info about our lingo (words we use often), our big events that happen each year, as well as where to go for more information. I want to encourage you to check out the HUB website if you have any questions or need further information. You can find us on the web at HoustonsFirst.org/Students or on the HUB Student App.

Strategic Values

Mission Statement

The HUB Student Ministry is here to lift up King Jesus in all that we do. Our mission is then lived out through our strategic values. Our values are strategic in that they are specifically focused with the purpose of becoming our identity. We value . . .

1. The supremacy of Christ over the centrality of Christ (for more information, read Richard Ross’ book concerning the supremacy of Christ). This view sees Christ as supreme in everything we do rather than a little god in our pocket.

2. Students having an ongoing walk with King Jesus and love for His church that is multi-generational.

3. “As We Go.” This is a missional statement. This phrase is shortened from the statement “AS Christians (identity in Christ), WE help people (seeing & meeting needs) GO to heaven (evangelism).”

4. Parents as the primary disciplers of their children. Our role is secondary.

5. The role and importance of layers of appropriate godly adults. These adults help guide each student in their walk with King Jesus.

Grow@Home Celebrations for Student FamiliesWelcome to The HUB” AUGUSTA lunch for our new 6th graders and their families. This celebration helps students and families know what to expect in The HUB Student Ministry, equips parents on how to disciple their teenage student, and hear from a professional in the field of parenting students.

Senior Celebration”MAYA morning event that celebrates our graduating Seniors. This morning event highlights individual accomplishments, reminisce on past experiences, hear a challenge for their future, and celebrate this milestone.

Grow@Home Parent Path for Student Families BOOKS & CONTENT THAT MAY BE COVERED:Parenting By Design by Dr. Paul Friesen & Dr. Virginia FriesenArtificial Maturity by Dr. Tim ElmoreAccelerate by Dr. Richard RossTech Savvy Parenting by Brian HousmanFaith at Home by Mark Holman

Each of these books will help equip and prepare parents to understand the culture their students are living in and how to have a plan to parent them through these challenges. Join other parents of students and walk through these topics together in discussion and support.

Parent Training EventsFall 2015 & Fall 2016Join other parents in training events that feature main stage teaching, breakout sessions, and panel discussions that will cover topics on parenting students. Look for specific dates and content to be promoted soon.

Other Parenting Resources & HelpsWe’ve put together some ways to help you in your discipleship of your student:

A G @H Family is…Authentic – Being real about the problems and issues faced in the home

Engaged – Actively working to be in the game, and not on the sidelines

Relational – Bringing down emotional walls and creating credibility in relationships

Missional – Believing Jesus is King and focusing resources, relationships and the calendar to reflect that belief

Intentional – Not just letting life happen, but taking real steps to live purposefully

Grow@Home is a churchwide commitment to encourage spiritual growth at home. Spiritual training at home and regular attendance at Life Bible Study and Milestones at Houston’s First lay the foundation for a deep and lasting faith. The goal of NextGen Ministry is to aid families in becoming the primary disciplemakers of their children.

• Parent Email – Get plugged in to our weekly Parent Email by sending your email address to [email protected].

• Resources – You will find books, websites, devotionals, and more listed on our Next Generations page. Go to HoustonsFirst.org and click on “Parents” under Life Stages at the top of the page.

• Off-site Events Blog – Stay connected to your student while they are away from the Loop at TheHubStudents.Blogspot.com.

• Parenting a Teen We know it’s not easy to parent teenagers today. But we also know that God has hard-wired students to be influenced by their parents. We hope that you are taking advantage of this influence to be the primary disciple-maker of your son or daughter in their walk with God. Here’s our TOP Five list of how to start carrying this out with your student.

5) Use dinner time to pray and to talk about spiritual things.

4) Encourage them to read their Bible each day and plan a weekly time to discuss what you are learning.

3) Ask your student how you can pray for them and then do so!

2) Encourage them to talk about their faith as part of their everyday experiences.

1) Fall in love with Jesus yourself and share that experience with your son/daughter.

Getting ConnectedFAQs

Where is the Student Ministry Office? Many times in our event promotions you will be directed to contact or bring things to the Student Ministry Office. It is the office of Susan Newman, Student Ministry Administrative Assistant, and is located on the 3rd floor in the student area (Rm 353). Email for the Student Ministry Office can be directed to [email protected]. Phone is 713.957.7631.

How do I register for an event? Most events that require registration can be accessed online by going to HoustonsFirst.org/Events or a specified event registration address. If you have specific questions about how to register, please contact Linda Sproule at [email protected] or call 713.957.7634.

Are health forms required for all events?Health forms are required for all out-of-town or overnight events only. To complete a Family and Student information form, go to HoustonsFirst.org/NextGen.

How can I get involved as a parent or volunteer?Your best involvement is in encouraging and challenging your son/daughter to be involved in the ministry of the church. We would also enjoy having you involved in the following ways: 1) Join the Parent Prayer Group at: HoustonsFirst.org/HUBParents 2) Attend a Milestone class3) Apply to serve as a student ministry volunteer at: HoustonsFirst.org/NextGenVolunteer

How can I get my son/daughter more involved in church? When a student is connected to other students, they will be involved. Our first suggestion is to encourage consistent attendance in a Life Bible Study Group. Through this venue students connect with other students of the same gender and grade.

Second, encourage your student to attend midweek programs (Amp/Wired) and other special events with their small group.

Finally, there’s no better place to get connected than Summer Rush (HUB activities throughout the summer). If you still sense a reluctance to get involved please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What is the process to be baptized? If your student is interested in being baptized you first need to contact either Tony Bianco (Middle School) or Justin Holcomb (High School). Once you have connected with a minister you will set up a meeting to discuss your students decision to follow Christ, what baptism is, and to answer any questions. Upon completion of the meeting students will be asked to work through a small workbook to help them understand and form their testimony. Once the book is finished the minister will review it and then pass on your information to the Connection Center to schedule the baptism.

What is the best way to know what’s going on in the HUB?This book of course! Other sources of information are: 1) Our website – TheHubStudents.com 2) Weekly parent email (subscribe by contacting [email protected]) 3) By phone 713.957.76314) The HUB Students App

For other questions you may have, please give us a call or send an email!
