Cutting the cost of paddling at FCC

Here are two ways of cutting the cost of your paddling sessions:

PaddlePass: You can buy a monthly Pass for £10 and this entitles you to paddle as often as you like on week days during that month (when the clubhouse is open). £50 buys you a year’s Pass.

Upfront Card: Buy 5 sessions up front (£12.50) and get the sixth session free!

Remember the club has a debit/credit card machine to make it easier to pay.

GRAND TEAM EVENT

8th May 10am at the Clubhouse Cost £2.50 Organiser: John Kent

THIS IS A REALLY GOOD EVENT! EVERYONE CAN PARTIcPATE!

In teams of three boats, work together to race through the poles fast.

Practice from 10am Race starts 11am approx Your team gets two runs and

the best run counts. A team comprises any three boats. And they don’t have to be slalom boats. Choose the boat you like paddling! You can have three people in your team, in single kayaks/canoes. Or you can have up to six people in your team, in a combination of single or double kayaks/canoes. It is a fun event. We will help you sort out a team on the morning.

WINCHESTER SLALOM

15thMay 8am at the Clubhouse Cost is your race entry fee Come to the clubhouse at 8am so we can sort out kit and then drive to Winchester to be there around 10am. This way you can get to have a practice before the official prac-tice starts.

You will need to bring a change of clothes, your entry fee and a packed lunch.

Winchester is an easy slalom on flat water and it is an ideal first race if you are new to slalom. If you are an experienced paddler, come to enter the Open race, or try a different class (C1 or C2).

AVON CANOE LOOP

21st May 8.30am at the Clubhouse Cost £3 Organiser: Stu Miles This is a 6 mile round trip from

Bradford on Avon, down the River

Avon, returning back to our start

point along the canal.

This trip will involve one weir and

one aqueduct. The river at this time

of year is a very pleasant to paddle

in a canoe or kayak, with lots of

wild life to see.

There is a second weir to shoot at

the lunch spot, but this will depend

on whether there are any anglers

around.

The return trip on the canal will see

a lot of canal boats and the public

on the tow path (not the canal

boats on the tow path or we are in

flood).

The start and finish is by the Tythe

Barn, which always does a good ice

cream!

So another canoe trip - get your kneeling pads out! And kayaks are welcome too.

MINI SLALOM

27th May 6pm at the Clubhouse

THE SECOND EVENT IN OUR 2016 SERIES OF MINI SLALOMS

This is a friendly competition, giving you a chance to have a go without the stress of a ranked slalom.

Come at 6pm to practise and the race starts at 7pm.

We need help to run this event - to do the timing. If you can spare an evening, please come along and give us a hand.

FRIDAY CANOE POLO

13th May 7pm at the Clubhouse

THE FIRST EVENT IN OUR 2016 SERIES

New this year, we are going to offer a chance for members to come and participate in a fast and furious game of canoe polo on a Friday evening.

The other dates are June 10th and July 15th.

COACH DAY

19th June

9.30 - 4.30pm at the Club Organiser: Rich Carter

This is a new thing for us and is pitched at supporting our coaches.

The plan is to have a day where we can share ideas, hear from Jack and Megan about some of the latest coaching tips (they have both just done a Level 2 Training) and work together on checking that our coaching standards all agree.

We will produce a programme in due course, but the idea is to get on the water rather than sit and chat in the clubhouse.

Coaches: let us know if you want us to cover anything particular ('how to teach edging', ‘how to teach bow rudders' etc). Alternatively let us know if you would like to lead a short session in the day.

We want this to be useful and we would like everyone to feel welcome - participating and/or contributing.

If you are interested in becoming a coach or helping at the club, this day is for you too.

LANGHAM FARM

FRIDAYS

Monthly sessions over the summer 20th May 6.30pm to 8.30pm Cost £2.50 Organiser: Rich Carter This session is for members wanting to use the moving water at Langham Farm to progress their skills. It is not going to be a general fun session so no swimming and no messing about. We need to know in advance if you intend to come and want club kit. Let us know on the Wednesday before so that we can load the trailer. People with own kit can of course just turn up. As usual we will end off with cup of tea (and cake if anyone brings it). The normal procedure at Langham Farm needs to be observed: Please do not stop/park in front of

the farmhouse If the ground is wet, please park on

the bridge or very close to it where there is stone.

Please leave gates as you find them.

Other dates are 17th June and 8th July

Calendar: Langham Farm Slalom 4/5th June

This is the slalom that Frome Canoe Club organises for British Canoeing. It is part of the National Series of ranked events.

We need help to run the event and we also want lots of members to race in it.

The site is reached from the village of Rode by turning into Langham Place, which takes you to the farm. Turn sharp left in front of the farmhouse over a bridge onto the slalom site.

There is car parking on the first island and camping across another bridge on the second island.

Charges are: camping £4pppn, and parking £3 per car. (Campers do not then pay the carpark fee).

Map 183 ref ST808550 Satnav BA11 6PL

The campsite has drinking water and flush toilets. Hot and cold food is served all day both days. Breakfast is available on both Saturday and Sunday .

The weekend is a double event which means there are two separate races, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. The course on gently moving water and is good if you are just starting in slalom. Division 4 is for beginners and if you do well you can progress to Division 3. We will help you fill out the entry cards and help you get started. After your race, please stay in your boat below the Finish line until the next two competitors arrive. This is a safety precaution - you may be asked to act as a rescuer. If the whistle blows while you are racing, it means you have been caught up by a paddler. Just move to one side to let him/her pass. And finally please do not leave your boat on the weir between your two races.

Page 10: 2016 05 newsletter

10

Slalom improves paddling skills and fitness, so it’s good for everyone, especially if you want to progress your white water skills and/or level of fitness in general.

Training sessions:

Mondays 6 - 7pm juniors, 7 - 8pm adults Wednesdays 7 - 8pm adults and juniors.

Some things to remember:

Newcomers usually start in Division 4. When you do well, you get promoted. You build up your skill, and work your way up to bigger water and tougher competition. Division 4 races are on easy water - When you get to Division 1 it

will be big and tricky! ( )

Newcomers can paddle any boat - so choose the one you like best.

The aim is to run a rapid river course marked by "gates" fast, and without touching them. A "gate" is two poles, suspended over the water. If they are green and white you pass through going downstream. If they are red and white gates, go upstream through them.

Penalties: if you touch a pole with anything – paddle, boat, buoyancy aid, helmet or yourself - a 2 second penalty is added to your time. If you miss out a gate, or go through in the wrong direction, the penalty is 50 seconds.

Each competitor takes two runs, and the best run counts.

There are classes for Kayak, Canadian Singles, and Canadian Doubles.

Some more things to remember:

Entries go on Entry Cards. You can get help to fill those out.

If bibs are not being used put the number you have been given on your boat (use sticky tape).

You start in number order. Watch others at the start, and be there when your turn comes. Then try to get through all the gates - in the right order

When you've finished, wait for two more people to finish before you get off - it's your turn to do safety duty.

Leptospirosis - information

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

All about Leptospirosis / Weils Disease Leptospirosis is an infection that can affect people who come into contact with water where rats live. It can cause a disease called Weil's disease, which feels a little like flu with a persistent and severe headache to start with. It is far more serious than flu and it is important that you tell your doctor if you’re feeling unwell after kayaking/canoeing. As canoeists and kayakers, we are all at risk of suffering from this infection, but following some basic rules can reduce the likelihood of get-ting it. Cover all cuts and broken skin with waterproof plasters. It can be a bit tricky to keep the plasters on, but your instructor will have some ideas for keeping cuts covered. Wash your hands after paddling and always before eating or drinking. Better still, have a bath or shower after paddling.

Remember that live on the rivers that we

like to paddle.

Always after paddling and definitely

wash hands before

This article is not to alarm you - it is to give you information. Please be reassured that we are not telling you about Leptospirosis because we have any more concern than normal at the moment - the last case in the club was about 15 years ago.

Have fun paddling, be aware of the risks and

ENJOY YOUR SPORT

Page 20: 2016 05 newsletter

20

Canoeing and kayaking are “Assumed risk” – “Water contact sports” that may carry attendant risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks, and be responsible for their own action and involvement.

YOUTH MEMBERS (15 years+) Would you

like to help shape the future of the club,

then look here!

The committee has decided to set up a ‘youth council’ so that young people in the club have a voice. Initial meeting is to be Monday 13th June, 7pm at the clubhouse. Come if you can. If you can’t come - let Tracey or Pam know that you are interested.
