Innovative Educational Methods in Teaching L2 to International Students

The Department of Humanities was established in 1973 along with the opening of the Preparatory Faculty for foreign citizens of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute.

The purpose of teaching is to prepare international students for professional communication at universities of Ukraine in Russian, Ukrainian and English. The department prepares students of engineering profile for technical universities of Ukraine, prepares for university studies future physicians, economists, humanists and also teaches trainees (philologists and non-philologists) from Western Europe.

The specificity of the department is realized in international relations. At different years, the department hosted the interns from the U.S.A, Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Greece, Spain, Italy, Korea and other countries. For already 20 years, the Summer Language School where students from different cities of Austria annually learn Russian language, has been working at the department. This program is carried out under the Treaty between NTU “KhPI” and University of Klagenfurt. Teachers of the department repeatedly lectured in Vienna, Innsbruck and University of Klagenfurt. More than 80 % of teachers have worked at universities in the UK, Sweden, Austria, Madagascar, China, Vietnam, Algeria, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Cuba, Guinea and other countries.

Currently the Department of Humanities of the International Education Faculty (IEF) of NTU “KhPI” continues teaching international students who come to study to Ukraine. More than 7,000 of international students have completed their study at the IEF by now.

The purpose of our proposals is:

to develop educational programs in L2 teaching for international students;

to develop new concepts for learning and innovative teaching methods: activity-based learning, case-studying, role-playing, brainstorming, using the Internet and distance technologies.

The result of mutual cooperation:

development, testing, adjustment, implementation of training programs for L2 learners, tools and training methods, creation of joint L2 text-book and distance courses;

training of the L2 teachers and students;

professional advising to international students for their proper inclusion into local socio-economic environment;

organization of joint conferences on the problems of L2 teaching and learning;

inclusive education of international students;

active participation of our department in your current projects.

Scientific novelty is stipulated by working out of pedagogical background for distance teaching L2 to international students.

Practical value of the mutual cooperation is to ensure a new level of international education.
