CRUNCHATIZE ME CAP’NThe Lafayette women’s basketball team announced senior forward Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby and junior guard Sammy Stipa as the captains for the 2016-17 campaign. This is Ottewill-Soulsby’s second straight season as a team captain. She made 23 starts in 26 appearances last year, while Stipa got the starting nod in all 24 games that she played in. The two will lead a Leopards’ team that features three sophomores and four freshmen.

FLASHY FRESHMEN CLASSGrentz went out on the recruiting trail and reeled in an impressive four-player freshman class.

Olivia Gumbs has the ability to play multiple positions on the court and was recognized as a two-time First-Team All-Conference and All-State Performer in high school. Through two games, she is tied for third on the team in scoring at 7.3 points per contest and first in rebounds with 5.7 per game.

Tasha Vipond was named the MVP of a team which claimed a state championship last year. The Ankeny, Iowa native was also named First-Team All-State, All-Conference and All-District as a senior. She is an athletic player who can consistently knock down shots. Sarah Agnello was a key piece of a region and district title winning team last year at Villa Maria Academy in Erie, Pa. She has the ability to shoot the ball well and has shown great leadership for a first-year player thus far.

Alexis Santarelli, a two-time First-Team All-Conference player in high school, brings a left-handed touch with her to College Hill. Her AAU team, the Philadelphia Comets, took first place in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Philadelphia native scored eight points in each of her first two contests and six in her last outing against Robert Morris. She also ranks second on the team in rebounds at 5.3 per game.

O CANADASophomore center Angela Ribarich returns for her second season with the Leopards. At 6-5 she towers over the competion and as a freshman, she was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team and was recognized as a two-time conference Rookie of the Week.

The Toronto native has recorded at least one block in each of her three games this season.

LOOKING FOR MORE ROAD SUCCESSThe Leopards played to a 2-13 record on the road last season. It will not get any easier for the Maroon and White as they will play just three of their 12 out-of-conference games inside Kirby Sports Center. Lafayette got started on the right track in the 2016-17 sea-son with a 56-49 non-conference road victory over La salle on Nov. 11 in Philadelphia.

NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULEThe non-conference slate for the Leopards will be challenging as Lafayette will take on six non-Patriot League teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season including, Chattanooga, Lou-isville, Penn, St. John’s, Princeton and Duquesne. Additionally, the Leopards will face Drexel, a team that participated in the WNIT in 2015-16.

LIMITING THE COLONIALSThe Leopards held Robert Morris to 30 percent shooting on Nov. 16. The Leopards stole the ball seven times and recorded six blocks. The Colonials were held to under 30 percent shooting in both the first and second quarter. Lafayette currently ranks third in the Pa-triot League in field goal defense, limiting the opposition to just 33.9 percent from the field.

SEEING DOUBLELafayette has had two double-digit scorers in each of its three games this season. In the season opener against La Salle, senior Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby scored a team-high 13 points, while freshman Olivia Gumbs tallied 10. Against Rider, juniors Anna Ptasinski (12) and Sammy Stipa (11) eclipsed the double-digit scoring mark. In the Leopards’ last outing, Stipa once again reached double figures in scoring with 13 points. Meanwhile, senior Maia Hood notched 11.

REBOUNDING PROWESSLafayette has had great success on the boards this year, outrebounding its opponnents by an average of five through three games. As a team, the Leopards have recorded the most rebounds by any Patriot League school with 128. Their 42.7 rebounds per game ranks second in the conference behind Bucknell (49.0),

TOP 20 SCORERSStipa and Ptasinski both rank inside the top 20 in the Patriot League in points per game this season. Stipa cur-rently leads the team in scoring and is 14th in the conference at 10.7 points per contest, while Ptasinski sits in 19th at 9.3 points per outing.

E-ZPASSThrough three games, Stipa has compiled a total of 11 assists, which ranks third in the Patriot League. Her 5.5 assits per game is good for fifth in the conference.

BLOCK PARTY There is great size and length in the frontcourt for

the Leopards. Senior forward Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby stands at 6-3 and recorded 29 blocks a season ago. Ottewill-Soulsby swatted a pair of shots in the season opener against La Salle and then four against Robert Morris on Nov. 16. The senior has sole possession of fifth in all-time blocks at Lafayette as she passed Mary Prokapus ’86 earlier this season. Ottewill-Soulsby is currently third in the Patriot League in blocks with six.

Sophomore center Angela Ribarich stands along-side Ottewill-Soulsby at 6-5. Her size causes prob-lems for the opposition as she blocked 34 shots in her rookie campaign, which was second among all Patriot League freshmen. She recorded a single block against La Salle, two against Rider, and a pair against Robert Morris. She currently sits in 15th all time in career blocks at Lafayette. Ribarich ranks fourth in the conference in blocks with five. As a team, the Leopards are averaging four blocks per contest this season, which is good for fourth in the Patriot League.

CRASHING THE OFFENSIVE BOARDS In 2015-16 the Leopards were tied for first in the Pa-triot League with Navy in offensive boards per game at 13.2. In 29 contests, the Leopards brought down a total of 384 offensive rebounds.

The Leopards reeled in a total of 17 offensive rebounds in the 2016-17 season opener against La Salle,15 in the second game of the year against Rider. and then 11 against Robert Morris. Freshman Olivia Gumbs leads the Maroon and White with seven of-fensive boards on the season thus far. Lafayette cur-rently leads the Patriot League in offensive rebounds (43) as a team.

NEVER LOOKING BACKIn the Leopards’ first contest of the 2016-17 season, they scored the first basket of the game and held the lead for the remainder of the night en route to a 56-49 victory over La Salle in Philadelphia. The Lafayette lead grew as high as 16 in the third quarter follow-ing a pair of free-throw makes by freshman forward Alexis Santarelli.

LEOPARDS ON TV This season, 10 Lafayette regular-season contests—including all nine Patriot League home games—will be broadcast live to more than 100 million viewers via the Lafayette Sports Network. All 12 of the Leopards’ home games, whether televised or not, and all Patriot League road games will be streamed live for free on the Patriot League Network. The Patriot League Network will also stream all of the Leopards’ road contests during Patriot League play. Lafayette’s game against Bucknell on March 2 will additionally be available on the American Sports Network.

NEW OPPONENTS Of the 12 teams on the Leopards’ non-league schedule, there are three that Lafayette will see for the first time in program history. The Leopards have their home opener on Nov. 16 against Robert Morris, a team that the Maroon and White has yet to see play. The remaining two teams are Chattanooga and Bowling Green. The Leopards will face both while in Louisville, Ky. for the Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge.

FAMILIAR FACES Lafayette have played Princeton, Penn and Rider more than 30 times. Princeton holds the series advantage over the Leopards, but Lafayette has the edge over Penn and Rider.
