The return to Gesten Pavilion for the LMU men’s basketball team on Saturday, Feb. 18 means Homecom- ing for the Lions as they host PCH Cup rival Pepperdine at 3 pm. The 166th meeting between the two rivals is this LMU’s 2017 Homecoming Game and features the Alumni Association Pregame Tailgate at 1 pm. At halftime, LMU will honor the 2017 Class of the Athletics’ Hall of Fame. The game can be seen on Spectrum SportsNet and heard on KXLU 88.9 FM. THE MATCH-UP • Senior led LMU continues their season defined as the Cardiac Lions as they enter the week at 12-14 overall and 5-10 in the WCC after their 81-48 setback at No. 22 Saint Mary’s Thursday. The Lions added a six-point win to their resume on Feb. 11 with the 66-60 win over Portland. On the season, the Lions have seen 11 of their games decided in the last 10 seconds of the contest (record of 4-7) and have played 15 games decided by eight points or less, going 7-8 in those contests. LMU is 3-3 in one- point games, 1-2 in three-point games, the five-point setback against BYU (Dec. 31), a pair of six-point wins in WCC play, a 1-1 in seven-point games and the eight-point setback at BYU on Jan. 28, 85-77. • Pepperdine had their three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday at Santa Clara, falling 106-55. They are now 9-18 on the season overall and 5-10 in the WCC. The three-game winning streak for the Waves included wins over Pacific, BYU and at San Diego. Lamond Murray Jr. has been on fire of late, leading the WCC in scoring at 20.6 ppg. Senior transfer Chris Reyes averages 13.4 ppg and leads the team at 7.9 rpg. • This will be the 166th meeting between LMU and Pepperdine, the longest running series in program history. The series has defined rivalry of late with extra frames needed in both meetings last season and a Reyes put-back with 1.7 seconds left in the first meeting this season. Last season, Pepperdine won 68-65 in overtime in Malibu on Jan. 2, 2016 and then in the final regular game of the season on Feb. 27, 2016, the Lions pulled out a 90-83 double overtime win. In this season’s first meeting on Jan. 5, Pepperdine used that Reyes’ buzzer beater for the 71-70 victory. Buay Tuach had 18 points to lead the Lions who had four players in double figures. NUMBERS• The Lions used 19 steals to create 31 turnovers to earn a 66-60 win over
Portland on Feb. 11. The 19 steals is the fourth most in a single game in program history, and the most since the program set the record at Portland on Feb. 9, 1991. It was three shy of the Gersten Pavilion record, which is 22. LMU leads the WCC in steals this season at 7.4 per game... The defense allowed the Lions to gain a 27-14 edge in points off turnovers, the most all season. The Lions shot 37.9 percent in the game while Portland shot 43.2 percent, the first time (in nine games) the Lions won a game in WCC in which their opponents shot better from the field... The 60 points allowed to the Pilots was one of 12 times the Lions have held an opponent under 70 points. They are 9-3 in those games... In addition, Portland was the 13th opponent the Lions held to under 45% shooting in a game, improving to 11-2 in those games. The Lions are 10-1 when shooting better than their opponent and dropped to 2-13 when the reverse happens, shooting just 38 percent com-pared to 54.5 percent by Saint Mary’s on Thursday...
• Junior Steven Haney Jr., a 2016 WCC All-Academic Selection and NABC Allstate Good Works team nominee, hit six three-pointers last week, giving him 121 three-pointers in his career, replacing Ennoch Simmons (1985-89) for 11th all-time in LMU history. He is ranked 9th in the WCC with 1.9 three-pointers per game...
• The Lions force a league-high 15.0 turnovers per game, nearly two turnovers more than USF, who forces the second most in the WCC. They forced SMC into 13 on Thursday while committing just nine. The Lions are 2nd in the WCC with a +1.8 turnover margin. They are also 3rd with 3.7 blocks per game and 2nd in offensive rebounds with 11.1 per game...
• Petr Herman had five blocks against Gonzaga on Feb. 9, equaling the season-high within the WCC this season. He is one of just nine players in LMU history to have five or more in a game, and it has happened six times since
2010. Silvester Kainga set the record with seven on Dec. 2, 1998 against CSU Fullerton...
• The Lions shot 53.1 percent from the field on the Feb. 2 win over USD, hit-ting over 50 percent for the sixth time this season. They went better than 50% from the field in back-to-back games, hitting 52.3 percent against Boise State after going for a season-best 57.4 percent in the win over Portland State. It is the first time the Lions have posted back-to-back games over 50 percent since December of 2009. LMU shot 50 percent or better just twice all of last year.
DEPTH: • The Lions get the most out of their roster, using all 12 active players four
straight games against BYU, USD, USF and Gonzaga. They used “just” 10 against Portland with Kelvin Amayo not in uniform due to leg injury and Mattias Markusson did not play, coaches’ decision. They were back to all 12 against Saint Mary’s on Feb. 16. They have had 11 different starting line-ups, and went back to the third starting line-up of the season in the last three games, starting Brandon Brown, Steven Haney, Buay Tuach, Shamar Johnson and Petr Herman...
• The Lions used “just” just nine players on Jan. 14 against Portland, just the second time they have used less than 10 in a game. They used nine players against No. 19 Saint Mary’s on Dec. 29. In conference they have used all 12 players eight times, the other three include Dec. 31 against BYU, on Jan. 5 against Pepperdine and again Jan. 12 against Gonzaga...
• Herman was a bright point for the Lions in getting the last three starts, scor-ing eight points with three rebounds, two assists, a steal and career-best five blocks against Portland. They had eight points, two rebounds and a steal against No. 22 SMC. They have had nine different players lead them in as-sists and seven different Lions have led the team in scoring. Jovanovic led

Amayo are the five seniors leading the way this season for the Lions. In addition, to his 18-point performance on Feb. 2 against USD where he hit a career-best 4-for-8 from three in leading the Lions in points (18), rebounds (6), assists (6) and steals (2), Brown had his sixth 20-point game of the sea-son with 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting in the win over Pacific. Brown and Tuach led the Lions with 18 points each against Portland...
• Brown leads the way at point, sitting is 11th in scoring (13.7 ppg) and 6th in assists (4.3 apg). He is also 4th in steals per game (1.3), 11th in three-pointer percentage (40.6), 13th in three-pointers made per game (1.7), and 6th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9). Tuach continues to do a little of everything for the Lions. He ranks 18th in scoring (11.8 ppg), 9th in shooting (52.9%), 4th in three-point shooting (42.7%), and 3rd in steals (1.3 spg). He is on a career-setting pace, he had 96 points all of 2015-16. He has 296 through 26 games this year...
• Senior Shamar Johnson has been a consistent force in the paint for the Li-ons. The Pensacola, Fla., native has become a leader for the Lions and is hav-
ing his best season with 7.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg. He is 14th with 1.7 offensive rebounds per game...
• Rounding out the LMU senior class is a pair of transfers. Stefan Jovanovic scored in double figures the last seven non-conference games, including a pair of career-highs in the process. He is averaging 8.5 ppg and 4.9 rpg. He is ranked ranked 6th in offensive rebounds at 2.2 and 9th in blocks at 1.0. The final senior in the rotation, Kelvin Amayo, who was granted a sixth-year of eligibility by the NCAA, has been a big presence off the bench. In 17.5 minutes a game he is averaging 4.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.58 apg, and 0.88 spg. He had nine points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal against Santa Clara on Jan. 7, and had a big offensive put-back in the final 30 seconds to help Lions in comeback win over Portland.

• The 48-point win to open the season was tied for the sixth largest in program history, equaling the Lions 78-31 win over San Diego on Dec. 10, 1958... The Lions scored 57 points in the first 20 minutes against Vanguard, the most in the opening half since the 1991 season... In the sec-ond half, LMU held Vanguard to just 17 points, limiting them to just 5-for-35 from the field and 1-for-18 from the three. It was the lowest half by an opponent since the Lions held Seattle to just 11 first half points in an 83-51 win on Nov. 23, 1996... They had 59 rebounds in that game, the most since they had 61 against Pacifica on Nov. 9, 2012.
LAST TIME OUTJunior Petr Herman connected on his first two shots and senior Brandon Brown hit a three as LMU men’s basketball looked to be in an early offensive rhythm. From there the lid went on the basket as the Lions struggled to score in a 81-48 setback to 22nd-ranked Saint Mary’s on Thursday night. Herman finished with eight points and Brown was the only Lion in double figures with 10 points as the Lions finished shooting just 38 percent from the field, 26.7 from three and 42.9 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Gaels got their rotation game going and finished hitting 59.6 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from three and 78.9 percent from the free throw line. Jack Lan-dale led three Gaels (23-3, 13-2) in double figures with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
PROMOTIONS/UPNEXTThe 2016-17 season is coming to the final regular season week and the Lions will host the final home
game of the season against San Francisco on Thurs-day, Feb. 23 at 7 pm. The game will be the traditional Senior Day and the Lions will honor the five seniors playing in their final game at Gersten Pavilion.
OVERTIME The Lions have won four of their last five in overtime, having gome 3-1 in overtime last season, earning back-to-back extra session victories to end the regu-lar season. It is the first time since the 2003-04 sea-son the Lions played back-to-back overtime games and the first time since the 1975-76 season they won back-to-back OT games, defeating Saint Mary’s (84-77) on Feb. 19, 1976 and Nevada (71-69) on Feb. 21.
NEWEST LIONSLMU men’s basketball has received signed National Letters of Intent from four Southern California high school standouts, all of whom played for their re-spective high school in the CIF State Championships a year ago. Joe Quintana (Bonita), Eli Scott (Chino Hills), Ryse Williams (Redondo Union), and Zafir Wil-liams (Long Beach Poly) have signed NLIs to attend and play for LMU beginning in the fall of 2017. All four have continued their success as seniors, earning McDonald’s All-American Game nominations. They have helped their respective teams to impressive starts, as they are a combined 57-14. All are ranked in the top-50 in the state of California, including Scott’s Chino Hills team winning 53 straight games to earn the number one spot in the latest national rankings. As of Jan. 17, Quintana has helped Bonita High School to a 12-4 record and a 2-0 mark in league play. Scott is part of that Chino Hills that just won their 53rd straight game to move into the top spot in most national high school rankings. In that 72-64 win, Scott scored 26 points to help Chino Hills im-
prove to 18-0 on the season. At Redondo Union, Ryse Williams has helped his team to a 15-4 overall mark and a 2-0 record in league play. They have reached the number 14 ranking in the state of California. Zafir Williams has helped Long Beach Poly get hot in league, winning their first four games of confer-ence play. They are 12-6 overall. Quintana, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard, is a two-time All-Inland Valley and CIF selection. Last year he led Bonita to the Division 3AA championship game. Ryse Williams, who played for LMU assistant coach Reggie Morris Jr., before he joined Dunlap’s staff, is a 6-2 guard that led Redondo Union to the CIF Division I semifinals a year ago, go-ing 28-7 on the year. Scott, a 6-4 forward, helped Chino Hills go 35-0 and finish No. 1 by the USA To-day Super 25 rankings. Scott had a break-out season for the CIF Open Division Champions. Like the other three in the Lions’ recruiting class, he was named All-CIF. As for Zafir Williams, the 6-6 forward also had a break-out season in leading Long Beach Poly to the CIF Division II State Championship. He was named CIF Southern Section Co-Player of the Year.
Mike Dunlap, a 1980 graduate of LMU, enters his third season at the helm of the Lions in 2016-17.
Dunlap’s first season with the Lions was about setting a foundation for years to come. And his second season, he considered it “year one” with this new founda-tion. Year two saw the Lions peak down the stretch, winning three of their last four, including a pair of overtime victories over top-half programs San Francisco and Pepperdine. They finished 14-17 overall, 6-12 in the WCC, and earned a win in the WCC tournament.
Dunlap, who is 22-40 after two seasons at LMU, enters his 17th season as a head coach at the collegiate level with a 350-145 record (.724).
Prior to LMU, he was the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2012-2013 season, becoming the first coach in NBA history to win three times as many games as the year before. Before arriving in Charlotte, he was with Steve Lavin as his top assistant at St. John’s. During the 2011-12 season, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the team and served as acting head coach in all but four games while Lavin recovered from surgery to treat prostate cancer. During the 2009-10 season he was an associate head coach on Ernie Kent’s staff at Oregon, and the 2008-09 season he was associate head coach at Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson.
Prior to his work as an assistant, he spent nine seasons as the head coach at Metro State, leading his teams to national titles in 2000 and 2002 while earning NABC Division II Coach of the Year honors in both of those seasons. Dunlap, whose teams went to the NCAA Tournament in each of his nine seasons, posted an overall record of 248-50 (.832), winning five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles.
In 2006, he left Metro State to become an assistant coach with the Denver Nug-gets under George Karl. In two seasons with the Nuggets, he helped the team to a 95-69 record that included a 50-win season in 2007-08, the team’s first in 23 years.
Dunlap’s previous head coaching experience also includes three seasons with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia’s National Basketball League and five seasons at California Lutheran University. From 1994-97, he led the 36ers to a 59-33 record (.641) and three straight appearances in the NBL Final Four, including advancing to the Grand Final game in 1995.
Before going to Australia, Dunlap was head coach at Division III California Lu-theran from 1989-94, where his teams posted an 80-54 record (.597) and won three straight SCIAC titles from 1992-94, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1992 and 1994.
His college coaching experience also includes five seasons with the Lions (1980-85), one season at the University of Iowa (1985-86) and three seasons at the Univer-sity of Southern California (1986-89).
A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Dunlap earned an associate of arts degree in sci-ence from Pierce College in 1978, before attaining a bachelor’s degree in English from Loyola Marymount University in 1980. Dunlap and his wife have three children. An avid runner, Dunlap has a 100-mile race to his credit.

• Amayo, 24, played four games for Iona before suffering a season-ending injury as a junior in 2014-15. He had knee sur-gery prior to 2015-16, seeking a medical redshirt and a waiver to extend his eli-gibility, which he was granted. He start-ed his college career at Marshall in January of 2012, playing in three games before electing to transfer to Iona.

• In his final season as a scholastic athlete, he played for NIA School in Newark, NJ. He averaged 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and a couple of steals in leading NIA to a 26-7 record and a No. 6 national ranking among the country’s prep schools. He was named a Newark Star-Ledger First-Team All-Prep selection for his efforts. He also attended St. Benedict’s Prep and av-eraged 13 points, five assists and four rebounds in 2008-09. He had a triple double (15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists) and was part of a team that finished the season No. 7 in the final USA Today Super 25 boys basketball rankings.

• Trevor Manuel, a highly regarded product of Everett High School in Lan-sing, Mich., who played his first semes-ter at Oregon, transferred to LMU and joined the Lions program to start the spring semester… he will be eligible to compete as a sophomore for the Lions starting at the end of the Fall 2016 se-mester (December).
• Manuel played nine games for the Ducks, scoring 10 points with nine re-bounds... Manuel was a four-star re-cruit with a grade of 93 according to 247 Sports and 80 according to ESPN.com, who also rated him the No. 3 play-er out of the state of Michigan. As a se-nior, he played at Everett High School, the same program where his father (as well as NBA legend Magic Johnson) played in high school. He went on to earn Class A All-State honors after av-eraging 21.9 points per game.

• Markusson, a 7-1 center, has played the last two seasons before joining LMU for Jamtland Basket in Sweden, playing at both the first and second division… last season in 20 games for the second division he averaged 17.2 points and 12.4 rebounds, hitting 64.4 percent from the field and 2.0 blocks a contest… he played in 61 games in the two seasons in the first division, averaging 5.6 points and 4.2 rebounds a contest this past season… Markus-son played at the national team level with Sweden. He played eight games in 2015 for Sweden at the U-20 European Championships, helping his team win silver. He averaged 7.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in that tournament.
