These are exciting times, and there are many changes underway here at the Barclay. The 2016–17 season marks the start of several new programming initiatives that include a Jazz Series kicked off by 13-year-old jazz phenom Joey Alexander and his trio; and the Great American Songbook Series headlined by Orange County’s own Broadway and television star, Matthew Morrison.

In addition, the Barclay is renewing its commitment to family programming, and beginning an expansion of its ArtsReach program that takes artists performing on our stage into classrooms and community outreach programs.

The Barclay’s signature Dance Series continues, featuring four companies with international flair, including tap virtuoso Savion Glover, and the theatre will carry on its tradition of programming in world music, flamenco and Hawaiian music.

These new program initiatives are already creating a new energy among our patrons, and stirring interest among people who haven’t attended Irvine Barclay Theatre before. The Barclay is moving forward to have a stronger presence in Irvine and the surrounding Orange County communities, and we hope you will join us.

Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the leading champions of the Great American Songbook, having made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, actress, TV host and producer. A born entertainer, her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film.

She is best known for her Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical, Swing!, and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series, The Nanny. Callaway is a Platinum Award-winning writer whose songs are featured on seven of Barbra Streisand’s recent CD’s. The only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, she has also written songs with Carole King, Rolf Løvland and Barbara Carroll, to name a few.

Celebrating the Great Ladies of the Glamorous Nightclub Era

Linda Purl is known for her work in theater, television and film. She appeared on Broadway in the musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and many will recognize her from her roles on television in Happy Days, Matlock, The Office and True Blood.

Straight from New York’s Feinstein’s at the Regency, her show, Midnight Caravan, salutes the great women singing stars of the 1940’s and ’50’s—from Ella Fitzgerald to Judy Garland to Rosemary Clooney—as they reign over the swanky, sexy supper clubs of the era. From sultry ballads to hot Latin jazz arrangements of Broadway tunes, the show features classic standards like “My Romance,” “Shall We Dance” and “Caravan,” and conjures a nighttime world where the surroundings are posh, the drinks keep flowing, and nobody goes to bed before three.

Matthew Morrison is a versatile actor and singer recognized for his work both on stage and on screen. His work has been recognized with nominations for Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

Matt grew up here in Orange County and graduated from Orange County School of the Arts before making his mark on the entertainment world. He is most recognized for playing the part of Will Schuester on the Fox musical comedy series Glee, but he also has a long and distinguished career on the Great White Way. He made his Broadway debut in Footloose, but his big break came when he was cast as heartthrob Link Larkin in Hairspray. Morrison starred in the Tony-winning revival of South Pacific and was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Light in the Piazza. He most recently starred on Broadway this past season as J.M. Barrie in the musical Finding Neverland.

Only thirteen years old, Joey Alexander has already been nominated for two Grammys and was profiled on CBS’ 60 Minutes. This young phenom is setting the jazz world on fire.

An extraordinary and uniquely gifted pianist from Bali, Joey Alexander marks his recording debut with the release of My Favorite Things, nominated for Best Instrumental Jazz Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards. Joey brings a delicate, profound and soulful touch to his own interpretation of such classics as “My Favorite Things,” “Giant Steps” and “Over the Rainbow,” and showcases his talents as an arranger, composer and bandleader. His recording of “Giant Steps” earned a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo.

Through festival appearances and awards for his improvisational brilliance, the world has taken notice of this exciting pianist with the astonishing technique and soulful sound.

John Pizzarelli has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years, singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra (for whom he opened in 1993) as touchstones, Pizzarelli brings a cool jazz flavor to the Great American Songbook. Pizzarelli has collaborated with an array of artists that include James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Rickie Lee Jones, Rosemary Clooney, and of course, his father, the legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. With his charm, humor and rollicking swing jazz showmanship, Pizzarelli is setting the standard for stylish modern jazz.

The swinging and sophisticated sounds of the Clayton- Hamilton Jazz Orchestra have kept audiences enamored for more than 30 years. The Grammy-nominated orchestra has an amazing pedigree. Saxophonist Jeff Clayton and bassist John Clayton have both worked with Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Paul McCartney and with Count Basie’s renowned band. Pianist, composer and bandleader, Kei Akagi has been a mainstay of the international jazz world for over two decades. A member of the Miles Davis band in the late 1980’s, Kei has released 13 CD’s as a leader and has appeared on over 60 others as a sideman including Miles Davis’ last recorded works. Joined by bassist Shunya Wakai and drummer Tamaya Honda, the Kei Akagi Tokyo Trio has given over 400 performances worldwide and is renowned for its lyricism and refined musical invention. Experimenting with modern concepts within jazz improvisation, the Kei Akagi Tokyo Trio is helping to move forward the evolution of the piano trio into the 21st century.

Be there for the birth of four new ballets created as part of the intensive 3-week process of the National Choreographers Initiative. Artistic Director Molly Lynch invites four choreographers, as well as sixteen professional dancers from ballet companies across the country, to participate.

NCI is a southern California project with national influence. Over the past twelve years, NCI has brought 48 different choreographers to California to develop new works. Many of the pieces begun here have gone on to be performed elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. The project culminates in a public performance that showcases the excitement of new creation.

Purveyor of urban cool, witty chronicler of the ”me decade” and the cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker, Fran Lebowitz remains one of the foremost advocates of the Extreme Statement. She offers insights on timely issues such as gender, race, gay rights, and the media as well as her own pet peeves—including celebrity culture, tourists and strollers.

That is Fran Lebowitz off the cuff. Her writing—pointed, taut and economical—is equally forthright, irascible, and unapologetically opinionated. Fran Lebowitz’s first two classic books of essays, Metropolitan Life and Social Studies, have been collected in the Fran Lebowitz Reader. She is also the author of the children’s book, Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas. A documentary film about Fran Lebowitz, Public Speaking, directed by Martin Scorsese, premiered on HBO in November 2010.

Africa’s superstar a cappella group, made famous on Paul Simon’s 1986 Grammy-winning Graceland album, is still going strong.

For over forty years, the voices of Ladysmith Black Mambazo have married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. The result is a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape. Their musical efforts over the past four decades have garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry, but also solidified their identity as a cultural force to be reckoned with.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been invited to perform at many special occasions. They performed for South African President Nelson Mandela, the Queen of England and the Royal Family at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Dance Visions 2017, the foremost annual production for the Department of Dance at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts, presents Master Choreographers of the 20th/21st Century including new works from Distinguished Professors Donald McKayle and Lar Lubovitch as well as choreography by George Balanchine. Drawing upon the fusion of dance, music and theatrical elements, each new piece is the culmination of exploration in the creative space. This Master Choreographers concert promises to be a marvelous and diverse dance program including the UCI Symphony Orchestra with music selections conducted by Maestro Stephen Tucker.

Opera UCI presents the southern California premiere of a classic American story. The opera Our Town features the music of one of America’s foremost composers, Ned Rorem, and a libretto by American poet J.D. McClatchy. The production will be joined by the UCI Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Stephen Tucker.
