2016-17 MONMOUTH WOMEN’S BASKETBALLRETURNERSThe 2016-17 Hawks return three starters from last season in guards Tyese Purvis and McKinzee Barker and forward Christina Mitchell. Purvis knocked down 67 three-point field goals a year ago, while Barker led the Hawks in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. Mitchell led Monmouth with 8.9 rebounds per game and 55 blocked shots. Junior point guard Helena Kurt (Spanga, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) also returns after missing all of last season due to injury. Kurt contributed 10.2 points and 4.6 assists per game in 2014-15.

FRESHMAN PHENOMSA 5-foot-7 guard from Brooklyn Park, MN, Alaina Jarnot was a 1,000-point scorer at Maranatha Christian Academy, she also holds the Minnesota single-season assists record and has led the state in assists in each of the past two years at 9.1 and 8.8 assists per game, respectively. Jarnot was eighth in the nation in assists last season. Another 5-7 guard, Rosa Graham was named First Team Private Parochial in her fresh-man and sophomore years, before an injury kept her out for two months last season. She led the Kings to a state championship as a sophomore, two sectional champion-ships and was named to the sectionals all-tournament team as a sophomore. Alexa Middleton is a 6-foot-2 power forward/center from Abington Friends School in Jen-kintown, PA. She’s a three-time All-Friends League and InterLeague All-Star selection, as well as a City Classic All-Star in each of the last two years. Middleton was named MVP of the International Student Athletic Academy Tournament in 2013 and 2015, while earning the same honor at the Nazareth Academy Tournament in 2014. Taylor Nason is a 5-foot-10 forward from South County High School in Lorton, VA. She ranked third in the state of Virginia with 13.4 rebounds per game as a junior and compiled 19 double-doubles. She grabbed double-digit rebounds in 22 of her 25 games last year, including three with 20 or more. Nason led the Stallions to a second-place finish in the district as a junior. She was named Second Team All-Region and Third Team Northern Virginia Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Northern Virginia last season, to go along with Patriot District First Team and All-District Tournament Team honors. Kayla Shaw is a 5-foot-10 guard from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, AZ. She earned a three-star rating with an 88 grade on ESPN.com as the No. 90 player at her position. She developed a reputation as a sharpshooter, having shot 59.5 percent (184-309) from the floor and 52.4 percent (75-143) from long range, while averaging 21.1 points per game last season. Her three-point percentage ranked third in the nation last year. A 1,000-point scorer, Shaw earned All-State Honorable Mention, All-Division I Section II First and Second Team honors and the All-City Award twice. Adriana Zelaya is a 6-foot-2 stretch four who played for Coach Cory Rojeck at Millennium High School in Goodyear, AZ. Zelaya led Millennium to a State Division I Runner-Up finish as a junior and was named All-Section. Zelaya was named to the USJN All-Star Team and the PBR Super 64 All-Star Team in 2015.

TALENTED TRANSFERS The Hawks added two transfers to the 2016-17 roster in Rhaiah Spooner-Knight and Kayla Quintana. Born in Raglan, New Zealand, Spooner-Knight was a three-year letter winner at Utah Valley University. She was named to the All-WAC Second Team as a sophomore in 2014-15 after being selected to the All-Newcomer Team as a fresh-man. Spooner-Knight scored in double figures in 53 of 72 games played over three seasons at UVU, including eight of 20 points or more. As a sophomore, she averaged 13.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, and upped her scoring to 13.8 ppg., while also averaging 4.7 rebounds in 12 games as a junior. Rhaiah scored a career-high 27 points against Southern Utah and added 23 points at Oregon in her junior season. “Q” earned Second Team All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and First Team All-Region in her sophomore season at Scottsdale Community College. She led the Fighting Artichokes to the Region I Division II playoffs, averaging 13.1 points and 3.9 rebounds as a sophomore and 7.0 points and 4.7 rebounds as a freshman.

DRAWING INSPIRATION OFF THE COURTDays before her 10th birthday, freshman forward Adriana Zelaya was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After surgeries that spanned nearly nine hours and an uncertainty of ever running again, Zelaya is now cancer-free. Monmouth’s women’s basketball team has teamed up with Project Purple to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, and will wear purple t-shirts throughout the month of November, which stands as pancreatic cancer awareness month. The team will also wear gold shoelaces during the home opener against Clemson on November 19 to raise awareness for pediatric

cancer.

TURKEY DAY TOURNEYMonmouth will travel to Bethlehem, PA on November 26 and 27 for the Turkey Day Tour-ney. The Hawks will face Hartford on Saturday at 2:00 PM, and takes on either Lehigh or Norfolk on Sunday. Last year, Monmouth hosted the Hawk Holiday Classic on December 29 and 30. The Hawks bested St. Francis Brooklyn 63-54 before falling to LaSalle 65-50. A rematch with St. Francis Brooklyn is in line after Monmouth faces Robert Morris, as the Hawks are scheduled to take on the Terriers in New York on November 16.

HAWKS ON THE MOVEEight out of Monmouth’s first ten games will be on the road, with the lone home games coming on November 19 against ACC foe Clemson and December 10 versus Farleigh Dickinson. After a December 12 matchup at Eastern Michigan, the Hawks will return to the OceanFirst Bank Center for four straight home games.

FORCING THE ISSUELast season at Niagara, Monmouth utilized a full-court press for 40 minutes in forcing 24 turnovers on Feb. 19. The Hawks enjoyed a 26-10 advantage in points off turnovers and did much of their damage in the paint (40 points) in a 68-55 victory.

CARBONE CARBONE CARBONE CARBONE X2Dana Carbone hit four three-point field goals twice last season, finishing with a team-high 14 points on Jan. 30 against Fairfield. The sharpshooter went 5-of-8 from the field and 4-of-7 from long range. Previously, she shot 4-of-8 from long range at FDU on Dec. 20.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES BECOMING ROUTINEJunior Christina Mitchell compiled her ninth career double-double and her eighth in a span of 36 games, Dec. 20 at Fairleigh Dickinson. The 6-foot-4 post player scored 10 points and added 10 rebounds before fouling out in 31 minutes. The feat came a game after posting 14 points and 11 rebounds against Eastern Michigan on Dec. 10. The two double-doubles gave her four on the season, just one off her full season total from a year ago.

CARBONE CONNECTSLast year, Dana Carbone scored a career-high 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-8 from long range and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line, Dec. 20 at Fairleigh Dickinson. Her four rebounds and three steals also represented new career highs.

MAAC BARKER OF THE WEEKLast year, guard McKinzee Barker earned her second MAAC Rookie of the Week honor on Dec. 21 for her effort at Fairleigh Dickinson a day prior. The first-year point guard scored six points on 3-of-6 shooting, while adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

WELL, THAT’S A FIRSTThe Hawks set a new program single-game record with 14 three-point field goals made on Dec. 10 against Eastern Michigan. The previous high of 13 was established in 2014-15 on a pair of occasions and matched twice more early this season. Monmouth will take on Eastern Michigan once again in 2016-17 on December 12.

SHARING AND SCORINGLast season Monmouth tallied assists on 83.3 percent (20-24) of its made baskets on Dec. 10 against Eastern Michigan, its highest percentage since assisting on 85.0 percent (17-20) on Jan. 12, 2013 against Robert Morris.Senior center Christina Mitchell

PURVIS PUSHES HER WAY INTO STARTING FIVETyese Purvis scored in double figures in four of her first five games for MU to push her way into the Hawks’ starting line-up for the first time, Dec. 6 against Niagara. Purvis made it 5-of-6 in double figures with 13 points in 30 minutes against the Purple Eagles.

RAREFIED AIRChristina Mitchell’s 21 rebounds as part of her second double-double of the year (13 points) against Siena on Dec. 4 were the most by a Monmouth player since the 1987-88 season, when Sandra Cook grabbed 21 or 22 rebounds on four occasions. The all-time Monmouth single-game record of 23 rebounds is held by Linda Wilson, who did it three times in the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons. Mitchell’s previous career high was 17 boards. The double-double was the eighth of Mitchell’s career and her seventh in a span of 32 games played.

DOUBLE, ALMOST TRIPLETyese Purvis posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds and McKinzee Barker narrowly missed a triple-double with 14 points, nine re-bounds and nine assists in the Hawks’ 86-80 overtime victory at Colgate. The effort, along with a six-point, nine-rebound performance earlier in the week, led to MAAC Rookie of the Week honors for Barker.

CAN A HAWK RUN?Last year Monmouth had four runs of at least 6-0 in the victory at Colgate on Nov. 22, including a 14-0 spurt spanning the end of the first quarter through the beginning of the second. Monmouth also had a 6-0 run in the first quarter, an 8-0 run spanning the end of the second and beginning of the third quarter and another 8-0 spurt to end the game in overtime.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUTSTyese Purvis and McKinzee Barker both made their Monmouth debuts at Lehigh and both left an impression. Purvis came off the bench to score all 11 of her points in the first half, while Barker got the start and finished with a stat line of nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals, while turning the ball over just once in 37 minutes at the point guard position.

MITCHELL ON THE BOARDSLast season, Christina Mitchell grabbed double-digit rebounds in 13 games. She grabbed a career-high 21 boards Dec. 4 against Siena. Mitchell finished third in the MAAC with 8.9 rebounds per game.

STOCKPILE SCORINGMonmouth was second in the MAAC in scoring offense at 66.2 points per game last season, including four of the top seven single-game scoring outputs in the league this season. Monmouth’s 88 points in the season opener at Lehigh stood as the second-most points scored by a MAAC team this season, while the Hawks’ 87 at Rider on Jan. 21 are the second-most in a single league game. Monmouth also piled up 86 points at Colgate for the fourth-most points in a single game this year, while the 83 it scored on Dec. 6 against Niagara rank tied for seventh.

BITE IS WORSE THAN HER BARK(ER)Through 29 games played, point guard McKinzee Barker has consistently filled the stat sheet game after game. She has just one double-figure scor-ing game (14 points at Colgate), but narrowly missed a triple-double (9 rebounds, 9 assists) in that performance. She also grabbed nine rebounds in each of her first three games and now averaged 4.8 boards per game.

WHO DOESN’T ENJOY A MATINEE?Monmouth had a stretch of 16 consecutive games from Dec. 29-Feb. 14 that did not include a tip-off time later than 5 p.m. Included in the stretch were Kids Day games at Saint Peter’s (Jan. 6), at Siena (Jan. 15), at Rider (Jan. 21), at home against Manhattan (Feb. 2) and at Iona (Feb. 5). Included in the stretch were four 11 a.m. tips, five at 2 p.m., two at 3 p.m., another at 4 p.m. tip and the remaining four began at 5 p.m.

PURVIS POWERS MU OVER CANISIUSAfter delivering the game-winning three-pointer in the final minute against Canisius on Feb. 7, Tyese Purvis didn’t waste any time in helping take down the Griffs on Feb. 21. She delivered eight-straight points in a span of 45 seconds in the first quarter, before adding 11 fourth-quarter points en route to the Hawks’ 81-71 victory. All told, she scored a season-high 21 points.

WELL...THOSE TRENDS TURNED AROUND QUICKLYMonmouth had been 7-3 when leading at the half and 0-11 when trailing after 20 minutes through 21 games this season. The Hawks were also 5-2 when shooting a higher percentage than the opposition and 2-12 when being outshot. Then the Hawks led Iona at halftime and outshot the Gaels in a 68-56 loss on Feb. 5, before trailing Canisius after 20 minutes and being outshot in a 79-75 win over the Griffs on Feb. 7. For good measure, the Hawks made it two in a row when trailing after 20 minutes with a 57-56 victory at Manhattan on Feb. 11. MU also outshot Fairfield on Feb. 14 in a loss.
