In 2016 NCSEA said goodbye to Jeanne Vogelzang, the NCSEA Executive Director of over 20 years, and said hello to Alfred T. Spada. Spada has been working in association management and magazine publishing for more than 20 years, having previously worked for the American Foundry Society. Spada has traveled the world to deliver presentations on manufacturing and marketing on six of the seven continents. He has a BS in Communications from Northwestern University and an MBA from the University of Colorado. His passions are cooking, traveling and his wife, Beth, three daughters, Alyssa, Abigail and Audrey, and his son, Antonio.
What’s he reading? Saveur, a magazine dedicated to cooking, entertaining, and food travel.
In 2017 NCSEA implemented two new positions and, with those, hired two new employees. First came Joanna Helmkamp for the Office Manager Position. Joanna attended Valparaiso University and now lives in Chicago, enjoying the city life! Joanna loves travel, recently spending three months in Guatemala before starting at NCSEA. She is a volunteer for PAWS and member of the Chicago Area Runners Association.

Resources for SEAsIn an effort to strengthen the NCSEA member organizations (SEAs), NCSEA has developed several tools & resources to be used by SEA Delegates to better their association.
MO Toolbox This compilation of SEA success stories provides you ideas for some of your SEAs largest pain points.
Delegate Calendar provides a guide to important NCSEA dates and deadlines in the next year.
Delegate Handbook contains the basics on what it means to be a dele-gate and how to access resources from NCSEA. In addition, it contains all the MO Reports written in a given year.
NCSEA Communication Webinars are free informational webinars held by NCSEA to educate SEA Delegates & Leadership. In 2017, NCSEA opened these webinars to the entire membership, which includes all SEA members. Such topics covered in the past year included: the NCSEA Grant Program, the NCSEA SEER Committee, volunteer-based insur-ance, and the results of the NCSEA SEA Survey.
Expanded Delegate-Specific Sessions at Summit—NCSEA has exten-sive interaction and collaboration sessions at its annual event just for delegates from SEA. It is a great opportunity to network but also to secure success stories and new ideas generated by other SEAs around the country.
Grant Program—If your SEA is looking to help fund an idea to help you succeed, look to the NCSEA Grant Program as an option to help with that funding. More than $40,000 has been awarded in the program’s first three years.
Face-to-Face Interaction—NCSEA staff and Board of Directors are interacting with SEAs face-to-face at SEA Board meetings, annual con-ferences and chapter events to see how we can help.
2017 Survey of SEA MembersResponses from the survey helped NCSEA to develop materials to distribute to delegates to grow their SEA and promote the profession.
What is the SEA Member Survey?• Performed Q1 2017 to assess perception of State SEAs, NCSEA• 50% of questions developed from SEA feedback
Survey Sample: 11,395; Survey Responses: 1,987 (17%)
Results: Members from all 44 State SEAs Responded
Results: 30 MOs had more than 20 responses

Demographics
NCSEA Young Members Groups (YMGs) provide a community for young or new structural engineers to interact with their peers while also eliminating the gap between schooling and licensed practice, producing more confident, competent and capable engineers. Young Engineers are a growing and vital part of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations. Their enthusiasm, energy and ideas point us toward a bright future.
The benefits of a YMG for young structural engineers, and the structural industry as a whole, are numerous. They include, but are not limited to:
• A venue for young or new structural engineers to meet, advise, network, and grow together.
• A productive transition from the university setting to licensed engineer is made possible.
• Technical confidence and experience are infused among members.• Refreshing and interesting discussions and presentations for members in all
stages of their careers, either as attendees or volunteer presenters.• An avenue to get involved with their state Structural Engineers Association
as well as the national NCSEA organization.

NCSEA Committees work to further the association’s mission to constantly improve the standards of practice within the structural engineering profession throughout the United States, and to provide an identifiable resource for those needing communication with the profession.
The Basic Education Committee seeks to determine and promote the core curriculum that should be offered to, and required of, structural engineering students. Integral parts of this mission include working with the Structural Engineering Certification Board to achieve a common objective, working with educational institutions for curriculum content, and working with practitioner employers to ease students from the academic environment into the workplace.
Chairs: Kevin Dong & Paul Hopkins
Accomplishments:• Completed Practitioners Survey• Sent three BEC members to the Wood Education Symposium sponsored
ASCE/SEI.
Goals:• Practitioners Survey - interpret results, develop a possible follow up survey• Modify recommended university education curriculum based on Practitioner
Survey and define course objectives for courses within the recommended undergraduate education curriculum
• Define role and select liaison for joint activities with the AWC and ASCE/SEI/Wood Education Committee
• Develop university curriculum survey questions and contact list• Explore student competition opportunities with ASCE or AWC, or other
organizations which promote structural design/integration• Identify groups which have a common mission in regards to training and
education, such as CROSSEE, SE Apprentice, other NCSEA committees, and partner on initiatives to reach a broader audience
The Code Advisory Committees operate as six separate subcommittees, structured to work with Model Code and Standards issues and activities, such as generating and responding to code changes, preparation and codification of resource documents, trial design studies, and practical application guidelines.
