Dear Friends, I am delighted to present this Annual Report for Saint Agnes Catholic School. Founded in 1873, for nearly 150 years Saint Agnes Catholic School has enriched the lives of generations in West Chester and beyond. Our School is a two-time recipient of the prestigious National Blue Ribbon awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to only 50 private schools in the country each year. Our teachers, administration, and staff are dedicated to serving our students with exceptionally enriching programs which develop every dimension of our students: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical. In a joyful, safe, and faith-based environment, our children can grow through our excellent academic curriculum, but also through their participation in many athletic, cultural, artistic and extra-curricular activities. Evidence abounds about the excellence of our academic programs. The Class of 2017 scored in the 95th percentile in the mathematics exam of the Private High School Entrance Exam. They were also recipients of more than $700,000 in scholarships. Supported by our generous parish community and an Endowment Fund, we are rightly proud of the remarkable work that is being accomplished in our school for the good of all. I invite you to read more about our wonderful Saint Agnes Catholic School in this Annual Report and to consider ways in which you can support our exceptional school in the future. Gratefully yours in the Lord Jesus, Rev. William G. Donovan, PhD, Pastor

Letter from the Principal

+Dear Friends of Saint Agnes School, For nearly 150 years, the generosity of generations of Saint Agnes School families, parishioners, alumni, and friends, have allowed us to continue to develop every student spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially. The joyful, faith-based environment inspires integrity, citizenship, leadership, and service to others in the church and in the world under the leadership of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our mission is clear and we are well-prepared to live this mission in the daily routines of the school. The school day begins and ends with prayer together over the public address system. We challenge the students to give service, to be good citizens, and to develop leadership skills. The Class of 2017 gifted the school with a beautiful school flag which now graces the front hall. The flag, Stag blue with white stars, is a reminder that we are under the patronage of Our Blessed Mother. Each month when we attend school Mass, we sing the school song, so lovingly penned by Sister St. Elizabeth, IHM, and we recall that we live “under the flag of Mary’s blue.” Sister St. Elizabeth wrote those words which we now sing each month. It is great to have parents and grandparents recall singing the song when they were in school. It is with great joy and much gratitude that I thank you for your generosity to Saint Agnes School this past year. We are truly blessed by your gifts of time, talent, and treasure.

God love and bless you,

Sister Joan Felicia, IHM

In 2007, then Monsignor Edward Deliman, Pastor of Saint Agnes Parish, continued the dream of former Pastor Monsignor Thomas P. Craven of growing an Endowment to support the good work of the school. By the Spring of 2008 the Endowment had pledges of 1.5 million dollars and it was well on the way. After a few short years, the pledges were redeemed and the current balance exceeds the original goal of 1.5 million dollars. The three main purposes of the Endowment are: tuition assistance, school programs, and teacher incentives. The Annual St. Agnes Golf Outing supports the Educational Endowment Fund. Through the years funds from the Endowment have been used for:

• Tuition Assistance • Programs Purchasing iPads for student use Math instruction for teachers through Foundation to Achieve Mathematical Excellence Math manipulative materials for classroom use Supporting the annual school show Underwriting the cost of grant writing Teacher Incentives

Two teachers were recognized annually and given a stipend Teachers were provided with the opportunity to attend a national conference on mathematics Teachers were offered support for tuition for taking advanced classes Teachers were able to attend various professional development opportunities outside of school Dr. Chris Penney of WCU provided professional development on iPads

There is a Board appointed to oversee the work of the Endowment. The Board meets several times a year. The investments are reviewed and recommendations are made for the Endowment funds.

Being named for the second time a National Blue Ribbon School in 2015 by the U.S. Department of Education, Saint Agnes Catholic School, serving pre-school to eighth grade, did not rest on its laurels. Here is what constituents have to say about the school’s Culture of Character.

Culture of Character by Michelle Blake

A St. Agnes education focuses primarily on cultivating the character of its students, helping them to “love and serve God and others.”

Maria Henshey Sixth grade teacher

St. Agnes “speaks to the spiritual growth of the child, which extends beyond the concept of ‘good citizenship’ that most schools encourage their students to embrace, and helps them build strong moral character, which guides them in making good choices.”

Liz Biebel-Stanley Parent of Will and Mia

“Character-building takes relentless hard work that doesn’t end with a final exam.”

Lauren Donohue Parent Lucy, Kevin & Benjamin

The families at St. Agnes have “committed to the cultivation of character by sending their kids to St. Agnes; it is hard work that people are willing to do.”

Kim Dudley Parent of Ella and Parker

Page 11: 2016 2017 Annual Report - Saint Agnes School · 2016 -2017 Annual Report Saint Agnes Catholic School ... Mrs. Christie Slade ... St. Agnes “speaks to the spiritual growth of the

Character is largely taught by “applying Catholic faith to life by the example of the teachers, administrators, coaches, and other students, since loving Christ is an action, not an idea.”

Jillian Graeber Fifth grade teacher

Character-formation happens when students “help prepare the school’s snacks in the morning, walk classmates to the nurse’s office, pray in each classroom for specific intentions, celebrate the Virtue of the Month at Mass, do grade-level and CYO service projects… and the list could go on.”

Mary Ann Sheridan Parent of Joe, ‘18; Mike, ‘13; Jack, ‘08, Corinne, ‘06

“The St. Agnes football coaches cultivate character by example. They take the boys to Saturday morning Mass before the games. The boys are expected to clean up and set up the field for practices and games, and they do so willingly, following the example of their coaches.”

Alissa McGrory Parent of Ella, Colin, Sean, and Brendan

CYO Director

“St. Agnes is a community of people willing to help in whatever fashion they can. That attitude becomes contagious and affects everyone in the community.”

Eric Urbanski Parent of Grace, Natalie, Erin and Henry

The students are “genuine, disciplined, and thankful for their education. Each day, the majority of my students leave my classroom and say, ‘Thank you, Mrs. Hodlofski.’ I think, ‘Wow! Middle school students, appreciative of what I have done and what they have learned! This is the Saint Agnes Student, embodied with manners, respect, and gratitude.”

1997 – Michael Bayer

I graduated from St. Agnes in 2015 and am currently a junior at Bishop Shanahan High School. In December 2014, I received some unexpected news.

An assembly was announced for all classes at

St. Agnes in Thomas Patrick Hall, but no one knew why we were having an assembly. It was not until we sat down that it was announced that a Saint Agnes student had won the Neumann Scholarship from the Connelly Foundation. I didn’t think that my name would be called, but I was still excited for the person who would be announced. I was stunned when I realized it was my name being announced. I was in a daze as the lightbulbs flashed taking my picture. I immediately called my mom and she was thrilled.

Being a Neumann Scholar is challenging as I

must maintain a 92 average or a cumulative class rank in the top 15%. It is also rewarding with many opportunities that aren’t offered to other students.

As a Neumann Scholar, I had the opportunity

to spend a week at the Freedom Foundation in Valley Forge this past summer for a Service Learning in Public Policy (SLiPP) camp. The Connelly Foundation provided scholarship funds for me to attend the camp. I participated in the Legal tract during the camp. The camp exposed me to current legal issues in the region. Our group specifically worked on a policy regarding concussions.

The Neumann Scholarship

Initiated in 1995 by the Connelly Foundation, this scholarship program identifies academically talented eighth grade students through an independently administered competitive examination and provides four year scholarships to attend one of seventeen Archdiocesan high schools. 900 eligible eighth grade students, on average, compete for this scholarship, representing 112 parochial grade schools in five counties. Each year about 35 eighth grade students who excel on the Neumann Scholars exam are awarded four-year scholarships to the Archdiocesan high school of their choice. 155 Neumann Scholars currently attend Archdiocesan high schools. The Neumann Scholars Program is respected and recognized by prestigious colleges and universities locally and nationally, and the students are actively recruited.

Next summer, I will have the opportunity to attend a summer scholars program at a college. The Connelly Foundation will be sponsoring scholarships for the full tuition at Notre Dame or Boston College or $1,000 toward a program at other colleges. I would like to explore engineering and will be looking at the program that is offered at Notre Dame and other local colleges.

In addition to schoolwork, I participate in other

extra-curricular activities at Shanahan. Currently, I am a member of the Shanahan Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team, and have been playing for Shanahan since freshman year. Freshman and sophomore year, I also played travel soccer. I am a member of several clubs, including French Club, CSC (Community Service Corps), Respect Life, Environmental Stewardship Club, and Photography Club. I was recently accepted into the National Honor Society.

Though it is challenging at times, I have been

fortunate to have won the scholarship and realize that the

Connelly Foundation has a vested interest in the success of

their scholars. I am grateful for the opportunities that have

been given to me.

The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) EITC allows Pennsylvania businesses to donate to non-profit scholarship organizations to receive a tax credit of up to 90 percent during the year in which the gift is made. It is an easy way for business owners in the state of Pennsylvania to make a tax-free contribution to Saint Agnes School. These contributions provide need-based scholarships to enrolled families who are eligible through the application process. This year, Saint Agnes School received EITC contributions totaling $109,750. Every dollar is allocated to Saint Agnes families to provide tuition assistance during the 2016-2017 school year. For both certain individual taxpayers as well as businesses, which are an S corporation, a general partnership or a limited partnership and pay taxes in Pennsylvania, ask your tax adviser if those taxes can be transferred instead to the tax payers and EITC fund. EITC is the easiest way for Pennsylvania businesses to support Pennsylva-nia schools.

To learn more about participating in EITC program which reduce your taxes while benefiting St. Agnes School, please call or email Chris Howe (610)-331-2371 or [email protected].

Thank you to these generous community organizations that distributed EITC funds to Saint Agnes School for the 2016 –2017 school year:

• Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools • Foundation for Catholic Education in Chester County • Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce • The Mascaro Company

Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS) is an independent charitable organization supported by individuals, companies, firms, and foundations of all sizes in the five-county Philadelphia region. Since 1980, BLOCS has invested in the lives of tens of thousands of children throughout the Philadelphia area, including some of the poorest neighborhoods in the City.

BLOCS is committed to giving children access to a high quality, value-based education in Philadelphia area Catholic schools. From its inception BLOCS has been supported by a diverse group of businesses and individuals.

Children who attend grade school, high school or the schools of special education in and around Philadelphia are eligible for BLOCS Scholarships. Through its scholarships, BLOCS reaches more children in more communities than almost any other private education charity in the region.

In addition to providing educational scholarships for students in the West Chester Area School District, the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce is committed to providing EITC funds to member schools. Each year at the annual Education Luncheon, the GWCCC awards the EITC funds to the school leadership. The local businesses who contributed to this program are: • DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc. • DNB First, National Association • BB&T

Foundation for Catholic Education supporting Chester County

The Foundation for Catholic Education supporting Chester County uses EITC funds to distribute to Catholic Schools in Chester County. In addition, The Foundation holds an annual Gala to earn additional funds to support the Catholic elementary and high schools in Chester County.

J.P. Mascaro & Company has been contributing to scholarship organizations through Pennsylvania’s EITC program for a decade now. Their support expands across hundreds of schools.
